right i have a huge problem

i switch my computer on and it'll go through its main system checks, i.e detecting keyboard/ mouse/ cdr drive etc, then once finished the comp will either goto a blank scrren or "no operating system detected" will appear.
i am running windows xp and i need to sort this out any help is appreciated cheersDo you have antivirus software installed? It sounds like a virus/trojan...

Well......LOL if it starts up ...the problem can't be that huge.......
How long has it been doing this ?
How often do you do a full system scan for viruses ?
Do you have any anti spyware istalled ?
Do you have all the latest XP updates and or SERVICE packs.
Is your Norton subscription still current ?
Do you have the latest Norton updates ?
How old is your PC and when is the last TIME you opened it up and removed all the dust from inside it .....

had it for about a year and i hae cleared the dust out quite recentley as i thought this might be the problem

i have also made sure that there are no loose connections inside the computerYou might want to try running a full scandisk in dos to check for bad sectors. It the hard drive is on the way out then it could be causing your problems. As certain files are lost to bad sectors the computer might not start. If the scandisk comes BACK as 0 bad sectors found, backup and format is prob the best way to go.Also, download a registry error repair utility. You can get this from www.download.com , and other SITES like that. Your registry might have just received a few errors...
