Answer» Some web sites, like this one for example, seem to work normally. Others, like Yahoo.com (email) refuse to load at all. I get a message The connection has timed out
The server at www.yahoo.com is TAKING too long to respond.
# The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
# If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
# If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to ACCESS the Web.
Other off-line computer functions seem normal. Spybot doesn't find anything. I've cleared the cache, run Ccleaner & defragged to no avail. Same symptoms in IE & Mozilla.
Another forum suggested it might be an out-of-date Java or Adobe flash player. I was able to reload that latest Java but Adobe is one of the sites that won't load.
I've searched these forums but haven't seen something similar. If something like this has been addressed in the past I'd appreciate a point in that direction.
Thanks!

Could be worth re-posting this in the malware section of the forum. Actually this sounds more like a connection issue to me... What type of connection is this ? When's the last time you reset your router/modem ? ?
BTW you should consider adding some more RAM to that build...both you and your machine will be happier...

I thought that.. but he does say other sites are working fine.. It's AT&T DSL. Speedtest.net say 2.58 Mb/s download & .43 Mb/s upload. I don't KNOW if I've ever reset the router. Just power off and back on again? Can you give more examples of other sites that don't work for you?Well... I reset the router and that appears to have cleared up the connection issue! Guess I'll do that more often from now on. I reboot the PC pretty often but haven't been in the habit of switching off the router - guess I'll add that to the list. Thanks to all!
There is one thing that popped up when I rebooted the PC this time, an error message
"NPSWF32_FlashUtil.EXE - Entry Point Not Found The procedure entry point GetSystemWow64DirectoryA could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll"
Is that anything to be concerned with?
thanks again!
