| Answer» I am supposed to as a Comcast patron constantly be getting a new IP, for my safety and protection. However I have been stuck with the same ip address for awhile.
I called up Comcast last night to get them to change it.

 I.
 A. They had me turn off the computer, unplug the modem from the power source, and unplug the ethernet.
 B. Then to re-hook up the ethernet, re-power the moden, and turn on the computer.
 Problem was twofold:
-My IP address according whatismyip.com and other websites was still the same (24.62.84.252). I also checked on my computer (start>control panel>network connections>right click LAN>status>support) and got the same address.
-Second, Comcast had a different IP address associated with my computer.

 So then they had me
 C. start>run
 D. Type ipconfig /release
 E. Type ipconfig /renew

 Same Problem

 II
So they told me to go and get a new modem. I went and got a new one.
 A. The told me to keep my old modem...and instead use the splitter to have the phone line go into 1 modem, the ethernet into the new modem, and I should have a new IP.
 B. I installed, and the same problem.
 C. When I check my IP address on whatismyip.com
 or
 on my computer (start>control panel>network connections>right click LAN>status>support)
 I get the same address.

 III
 So I called them again..
 A. once more they walked me through a power cycle of shutting down the computer, the modem, and unhooking the ethernet.
Then re-hooking the ethernet, re-power the modem, and turning the computer on.
 Same problem as before.
-My IP address still read the same (24.62.84.252)
-It did not match what comcast has listed as mine

 B. Once again he had me go to
 - start>run
 -Type ipconfig /release
 -Type ipconfig /renew

 Same thing as before.

Finally I got on with the supervisor who told me that Comcast has as my ip address for the old modem (73.156.141.230) and for the new modem I just got (73.159.63.155).
I asked them why is it when I check both on my computer AND on internet sites I am read the 24.62.84.254 in spite of everything.
Again I was told Comcast shows your IP has been reset and is new. Ignore what the computer says OR call up your computer manufacturer (Dell) and tell them your system needs to updated to show new IP address.
That or somehow my computer is PICKING up a static IP address (which makes no sense because if you TRACE the 24.62.84.254....that address is FROM Comcast of New Bedford/Franklin, MA....even though I live 100 miles away out of state).

I don't know if this is Comcast incompetence or my stupid computer.
 My questions

 1) What IP address do you show me as having when I post this now?
 2) If it is the 24.....address why is it this when Comcast gave me a 2nd modem and has powered it on and down, and released/renewed the address?
 3) What's going on and what can I do to get a different freaking IP address. Pisses me off when they say I am supposed to get a new all the time yet it always shows me stuck with this old one!First off, none of the people that Comcast ate giving you the correct information. Neither you, your computer nor your modem can force a change your address on the Internet. From your modem to the server used by Comcast is a point-to-point protocol and the modem has no control of the address that is going to be used out on the actual Internet. Anyway, here are two links that will show you how you are known on the Internet. And you can find others, which I'm sure you have done.
Just for reference, you might check with some friends of yours that also have Internet service with Comcast and see if they ever get different IP ADDRESSES out on the network.

 http://www.whatismyip.com/
http://network-tools.com/I believe you will need to get a router to change your mac address or leave your modem off for about 4 days to get a new ip address assigned.I already have checked both those websites, no new IP address.

So what is the deal...is Comcast full of it?
Why did they tell me to get a new modem, to turn on and off the computer, type ipconfig, and then claim I have a new IP address?

They say my IP has been reset and should change frequently, it never does.
They say the IP I get does not match what they have me listed.
Then they say the problem is my PC.

 Why are they so stupid?
What do I need to do to get my IP address changed?

Call the ISP for a new IP or spoof your MAC-address.Quote from: bluecountry on February 14, 2010, 01:01:40 PM

Anyway, changing your IP is not the sure way of getting protection.
How much security do you want?
Changing the IP address once a day is not really very high security.
It would be more cos-effective to get another Service Provider rather that purchase or rent a premium security service.

But, it that is what your really want, ask for 'T1 Business Internet' service.
The phone company may have to run a new CABLE to you place of business. Expect to pay $250 a month. But you can have a very secure network.

Otherwise, just put up with Comcast.Quote from: Treval on February 14, 2010, 02:40:19 PM

Is there anything Comcast can do or anything I can do myself at my computer to configure a new IP?Quote from: Treval on February 14, 2010, 02:40:19 PM
Call the ISP for a new IP.The OP has...many times.
Oh and bluecountry, a MAC address is not the same has having a Macintosh computer.

If you look there, you will find some information.Media Access Control <3

Because a MAC address is a unique address, a computer network will not have the same MAC address assigned to more than one computer or network device.Urban legend. Change MAC, Change IP. They do not have to give you a new IP address. Spoofing the MAC would be the same, in effect, as getting a new cable modem.

You can sin up for a CHEAP dial-up service and they will assign you a IP for the duration of the session. But dial-up is so slow.

Or you can get fast internet from your Cell phone provider. Maybe. Or you can get DSL from your phone company.

Another way is to get a VPN to a proxy server. With a VPN they can not s'see' you on the internet. The proxy will asing a IP for the proxy service.
It can be pricy. But if for personal use and moderate traffic, it might be what your want.
 Personal VPN and Proxy ServiceA
About $8 to $14 per month.

How and what is spoofing my MAC-address (I do not have a MAC anyway)
This is why i suggested buying a router, It makes it easy to change your MAC address.

They say my IP has been reset and should change frequently, it never does.Comcast definition of frequent is more like monthly, not daily.
