Solve : Is msiexec.exe not a virus? Maybe not.? |
|
Answer» Is msiexec.exe not a virus? Maybe not. ... Any malware can be named anything - so you should check where the files of the running processes are located on your DISK. If a "non-Microsoft" .exe file is located in the C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 folder, then there is a high risk for a virus, spyware, trojan or worm infection! ...Virus? Is it? Is it not? Is it really msiexec? This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated. http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/msiexec.mspx?mfr=true I just cleaned a Vista Laptop that used the program to block or LIMIT Internet connection. The virus spread to my other laptop when I tired to use a network bridge to get into the infected laptop. The virus infected my XP laptop! Unfortunately I can not identify the actual virus. I have PUT this here because I don't want to mess up the virus forum with something that I can not document. The first reference above is very DATED and should not be considered authoritative. Here is a more recent article: http://www.fixfiles.net/msiexec.exe.html It is not clear if the above link has it right. It looks like a EXPLOIT of the confusion this question has created. Does anybody hee know the whole story? This isn't new news and is fairly common knowledge to be honest. ctfmon.exe, services.exe etc are other common files disguised as malware. |
