Solve : java virtual machine?

I have windows xp and when trying to ENTER a chat room on a family web SITE an error MESSAGE says my computer REQUIRES Java SCRIPT. I downloaded the software from java.sun.com and saved it to c: drive but when I try and install it on my computer it says windows installer cannot install it. Any info on this would helpsee previous reply ?
