Solve : Keyboard repair?

Answer»

I have a Compaq Presario CQ57 laptop. I was replacing my keyboard. I accidentally broke the strip piece that holds the keyboard ribbon in place. I try fixing but the ribbon won't STAY in place in the connector. What can I do to fix it? Here is the picture below

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]New connector will need to be soldered in place of damaged one. This requires appropriate surface MOUNT rework tools that most people dont have, however a computer repair shop might have this service, however most aren't skilled enough for component level repairs and instead just offer replacement boards as the easy way out and as a way to not have to have an Electronics Technician on the payroll. These small connections aren't something to be done with a hand held soldering iron. Basically a hot air iron is used to get the solder to flow and the bad connector is lifted off. Then a flux and solder wick would be sued to remove the old solder carefully without overheating the PCB in which if it gets too hot you damage the board and lift very delicate pads and traces. Once cleaned up, a small amount of solder paste is added to each of the pads ( aka contacts ) on the main board. The new connector placed where it will be mounted and legs resting in the solder paste which is a mixture of flux and solder. The air wand is then used to heat this small area of the board to the temperature in which the solder in the solder paste becomes liquid metal and the flux caused it to flow to the pad and leg evenly. Then once this is completed for all legs the connections cool and a quick inspection to make sure than no legs bridged (shorted electrical connection ) together. If all is good the remaining flex could be REMOVED with a 100% alcohol solution or the board is fine with flux residue. The ribbon now able to connect to the new connector.

I am an ET and have done these repairs years ago but dont have any of the tools now. My employer Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation is where I got to play with these neat surface mount rework tools.

If you need this computer operational in the meantime, you might be able to get it to operate with a USB keyboard, and go into BIOS and SHUT off the Keyboard Detection ERROR so that it doesnt halt at boot with keyboard FAILURE. But if you want this as a laptop again vs a desktop the board will have to be serviced or replaced.
