| Answer» From Yahoo and two or more other sources. First, it comes with ReFS (Resilient file system) to protect your data from corruption, which is especially important when you're handling large storage volumes on a server. ReFS can detect when data's screwed up on a mirrored hard drive and then use another non-corrupt backup to automatically fix the bad one, ensuring your data's always undamaged. isn't that what RAID already can do? (well, at least my NAS can)Quote from: Mark. on August 12, 2017, 07:18:44 PM isn't that what RAID already can do? (well, at least my NAS can)That was mu first take. Maybe in the days ahead Microsoft will explain why this is more that hard drive reliability. The implication is that when you have a very huge memory array, you can have strange errors that are not correctable by the tools we already have. Here is an article with more detail: http://sci.newsfactor.com/story.xhtml?story_id=023002KGZUC0 Quote Set to be released as part of Microsoft's coming Fall Creators Update, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations will come with high-end persistent memory, support for faster file sharing, and an enhanced file system for handling large volumes of data. It will also feature expanded hardware support for advanced, server-grade processors, up to four CPUs, and as much as 6 TB of memory. Notice the reference to memory over TB. As I understand it, normally, when one drive in a RAID is found to be corrupt you have to manually rebuild the Array. It sounds like ReFS includes features aimed at the File System being used with RAID redundancy that allows those sorts of tasks to be handled automatically. it also looks like it is able to keep volumes "live" when they are damaged where NTFS often makes a volume entirely inaccessible due to corruptions. Here is yet another news release. https://www.theverge.com/2017/8/10/16128072/microsoft-windows-10-pro-for-workstations-features Search for 'Windows 10 Workstations edition ' | |
