| Answer» The latest update for Windows 7 SP1 machines (KB 2852386) includes a new option in the Disk Cleanup tool called Windows Update Cleanup. (Note: Windows Update Cleanup is included in Windows 8.1.)Thanks EF - wasn't aware of the option.I reclaimed 6.6 GB; in the comments under the Lifehacker announcement some people have mentioned 12 to 13 GB. Note: people have REPORTED failure trying to access the download using Firefox (Windows Validation barfs) - this happened to me, IE10 downloaded it with no problems. It installed for me as part of the Tuesday updates. It CAME with the standard updates for me as well. I actually cancelled the download halfway through, because the article said it was one of the optional updates (which I don't often look through), but it was part of the preselected updates already. Luckily, it resumed downloading from where it was, so it didn't waste any extra time.Windows Update Cleanup: 4.16GB I've been using CCleaner & manually deleting from C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads (only 2MB in there now). Winsxs folder is 12.0GB My Win7 OS + installed apps is 40GB, HDD is 320GB. I guess that MS figured with all the space available, it's not a problem. Wonder what made them change? Maybe the proliferation of the SSD? Or someone in change asking why are we saving all this junk? It did not delete ANYTHING from C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads Winsxs is still 12.0GB after the cleanup Windows Update Cleanup: 0GB Did this cleanup actually work? I don't think so.Something happened on the next restart (the following day, today). 1st said Configuring, Don't Turn Off Computer, then said CLEANING, Don't Turn Off Computer. Be prepared for a long boot time, took 5-10 minutes, instead of the normal 1 minute. Winsxs now says 7.86GB There should have been some kind of message after the INITIAL cleanup: "Cleanup will continue after the next restart" | |
