Solve : modem issues?

Answer»

This question is probably located somewhere but as I am new to this forum, I decided it would probably be QUICKER to start a new question. Why would my daughter's modem work for about 24 hours and then quit? I have replaced the modem. The error message saya no dial tone. However, there is a dialtone when chedked with phone. It may be possible that old age has resulted in it quitting on you.

Try the following:
Check the phone cord for any issues (eg: frailed, bent)
Make SURE the cord isnt being squished and make sure it isnt in a knot anywhere
It may be the phone line in your wall. In this case, it may be a "crackly" connection. Most modems can cope with "crackly" connections, but not all will handle it extremely well.

In the event that your modem has died on you (we will determine if it has later), it may be necessary to purchase a new one. You can order one online (from a site like www.newegg.com ) or buy one from your everyday electronics provider (eg: Freddies, Costco, Wallymart, Shapples, or That Office Place Depot... I fail to want to post the store names for some reason)
They usually dont cost much. Btw: You want a V92 modem.

Also, what operating system do you have?We have checked the phone line repeatedly. The phone gets a dial tone but the modem says there isn't one. I have put a new robotics modem in this computer within the last 4 months. I also installed an Ethernet card when she thought she could get high speed (no SERVICE to her area however). She has to do dial up. In checking the hardware, it says the modem is working correctly. I just don't want her to have to pay for service if it is something simple that I could handle (I am retired media coordinator who managed the network at our school and made minor repairs---replacing video cards, installing cd roms, etc.). Your going to need to put the Installation disk in the computer, and run through it. You are most likely missing the drivers. You can also try double clicking the device in Windows under Device Manager, navagate to the Driver TAB, and UNINSTALL the driver, and then restart the computer. Also, did you try different phone jack?
