Solve : PC maxed out and a horrible mess!?

Answer»

Hello.  I had a PC built for me by a co-worker 3 yrs ago.  I play some games like Sims 3 but nothing hardcore.  I do like to have 10+ internet tabs open at a time though & sometimes I have like 7 PROGRAMS running at once.    I also use my computer to watch movies on my TV.

Specs
Windows XP Home 5.1 SP3
Asus P5WD2 Premium motherboard
XFX GeForce 8600 GT XXX 600M 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express Video Card
OCZ 2GB Kit DDR2 PC2-6400 4-4-4 Platinum Revision 2 Dual Channel (I actually have another kit that never worked I just never got around to sending it in for a replacement)
2- Maxtor 320GB(640GB total) Serial ATA/300 16MB Buffer 7200RPM
Intel Premium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz
Antec Super LanBoy Aluminum Tower W/ 550w Fatality power supply
plextor px-716a AND HP 840 lightscribe

I think that's all the important stuff, if not let me know what I missed.  I only have 16GB of space left between the 4 separate allocated hard drives & it is a complete mess of crap!  I have tried going through it but get frustrated really quickly because there seems to be multiple copies of everything between the 4 hard drives.  I want to start fresh again but have LOTS of things I do want to keep, trouble is I no longer have any kind computer literate friends to help me.  I was thinking I should buy an external DRIVE and then send all the stuff I want to keep to that then reformat the computer, sound about right?  He had Windows on it's own 127GB drive so that it would be protected if something happened with the other drives, should I do that again & is there any need to have 127GB JUST for windows (I think not)?

What should I upgrade?  Who should I have upgrade it for me?  Where/how do you find people that do computer work?  I could manage SOMETHINGS, like I replaced the power supply, I can pop cd drives in & out, memory sticks & video cards.  I have never touched motherboards, CPUs or harddrives but I am a fairly capable fast learner...if someone holds my hand.

Thank you for any help you can provide! Quote from: myswtsins on July 20, 2010, 05:47:25 PM

Maybe I'm missing something:  2 hard drives or 4?
a)  If 2 internal drives this sounds like a good idea.I have 2 physical hard drives but for some reason he separated it into 4 drives, I have a C:, F: G: & H: hardrive listed under my computer. Quote from: myswtsins on July 20, 2010, 06:46:23 PM
I have 2 physical hard drives but for some reason he separated it into 4 drives, I have a C:, F: G: & H: hardrive listed under my computer.
2 physical drives partitioned into 2 logical drives, each = 4 logical drives.
Analogy:
2 file cabinets with 2 file drawers, each = 4 file drawers

Just a way to organize files to make it easier to find them, i.e. OS on C, data on F, downloads on G, etc.Given your statement "& it is a complete mess of crap!  " i think "crap" removal ought to be high on your agenda. A relatively easy way to accomplish that task is to start-search-all files and folders-what size is it (at this point remove the zero and insert 5000 which translates to 5 MB). That is just an arbitrary file size you can make it as you wish. Then begin your search. When complete go through the resultant list and lop heads. I recently did this on one of our computers and with little effort brought it down from 1024 to 309.truenorth
