Answer» I was just wondering, does it do anything to increase speed? I've Googled it and found some pages on it but I wasn't sure if it was just product advertising or not. Has anyone done it before? Does it screw with your computer or increase/decrease speed?
Thanks. In the old days, when systems didn't use as much ram and hd & CPU speed was slower, defragging the registry might have made a minimal difference in performance. These days it rarely if ever does. If you want the best utility for optimizing the registry get NTREGOPT (it's free and PACKAGED with ERUNT, which is the best available registry backup utility - also free).
While it's unlikely that optimizing (defragmenting) the registry will cause any problems, you can be certain that NOT optimizing will not cause problems. Why mess with it if you don't have to? But if you do, use ERUNT or a disc imaging utility first.the registry is preallocated when you install most versions of XP and higher, so it only gets fragmented when it gets extremely large, in which case you have bigger problems anyway.
Yet another type of tool intended solely to PREY on the common misconceptions on the subject. For what it's worth, I have seen a speed difference after using NTREGOPT, which I do on a regular basis. Whether that's a real difference or just in my HEAD is up for debate, all I can do is report that I have seen or "felt" it.
