Solve : Scored a Lenovo Thinkpad X201 with Core i5 for free - SD Storage Fix? |
Answer» GOT a Lenovo Thinkpad X201 with Core i5 for free today with power supply. It was going to GET thrown away due to damaged sata port that became non functional. I asked if I could have it and was told its trash but mine if i want it. I knew I could add a SD Card and use it if thats all that is wrong with it. I was able to place a 32GB SD Flash card into the card slot and use my external DVD-Rom to install Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon to it and now its running off of that for the rest of its functional life. This Core i5 screams. BOOT time and load time of OS and Applications surprisingly faster than expected. So if anyone has a laptop with a blown SATA port or buried bad hard drive that they dont want to RISK killing laptop to swap out. Add a SD Card 8GB or larger and install Linux to it for a cheap fix. I already had the 32GB SD Card. Now I just need to get another SD Card for camera for like $13 Looks like the Toshiba intel atom netbook isnt going to be used much anymore that I have this now. You made a great find! Why doesn't that happen to me? For others to see: Data sheet for Lenovo Thinkpad X201 Great find, I used to have an x201 and it was great (currently using a T440s). You may want to look into the SD card you are using as you could potentially get a faster one for better performance. You may also be able to get an "industrial" SD card with proper MLC or SLC flash like an SSD which would improve performance and lifespan, I've killed regular SD cards before by running them in a raspberry pi for extended periods of time. There are also SSDs that would fit into the expresscard slot although I have no idea if the BIOS on the x201 would allow you to boot from one. Thanks for info and suggestions I didnt even think about express card slot option for SSD. Cool ... Thanks for suggesting that. If the SD Cards start to get eaten up or if i decide I want to have Windows on this laptop that will allow for Windows vs Linux only. The SD Card I have now is a 32 GB Patriot BRAND. I haven't killed one before so this will be a first if I kill this one. How long did your SD Card last before it was overworked?
