Solve : Universal Messenger?

Answer»

Hey all,

I reformatted my computer yesterday! After 1 year!!! I had had no problems for an year! Actually My teacher TOLD me to give him my pen drive so that he'd give me some illustrations for my project, when I installed them on my pc and laptop , both were infected with root kits and hack tools (SOMETHING called PUP)....I reformatted both the systems, and now I'm left without any softwares! (I did make backups but some files in them are also infected, so I'm not taking the risk again).

Anyway I want your opinions on which is the best Universal Messenger, By best I mean which uses up the least RAM, and has best features, I used to use Trillian earlier.

Would love your feedback

p.s. I hate that teacher!I'm a big fan of Trillian AstraTill now even I'm in the favour of Trillian.Ivy,
Wasn't there an issue last semester with this teacher and a pen drive ? ?
Can't remember the circumstances but i vaguely remember a problem.

Is it the same teacher ?  oops yes!

Last time it was when he asked me to bring my Comp case to school so that he could install all the important software in it, but you said it's not safe so I did not. (when I wanted to hide or lock my folders)

But then I trusted him by now! so I gave him my pen drive! I don't think it's him though, maybe he installed software's from an infected computer. Or maybe he asked someone else to install them and that person installed the RootKits and the Hack tools.See i haven't lost all my brain cells...
In future if anything is required or suggested by him whether for class or otherwise i would just get the name of the App and find it on the web...preferably at the Author's site...
It doesn't hurt to regularly scan thumb drives with your protection apps...doesn't take long/
.

seeya.Pidgin.
Works GREAT for me, definitely uses less RAM etc than others I've tried and it's GOT all the features I need.
It does lack video and voice chat support, and file transfers are slow on at least the MSN network, because Microsoft haven't released their protocol so Pidgin has to use a workaround I believe.
Pidgin has lots of plugins available to ADD features, it comes with quite a lot but I just use Guitifications for popup notifications of contacts signing on/off, messages arriving and so on. Quote

I scanned the pen drive but AVG detected nothing at all.

Once I installed the files then AVG resident shield started detecting stuff.

Thanks . Quote

I read somewhere that Pidgin uses up different RAM on different systems.
Is that true? Quote from: Ivy on August 31, 2009, 07:47:29 AM

I can't say for sure, it does depend how many plugins you enable and so on.
I've seen mine use from 10MB to 30MB, depending on how many chat windows I have open at the time. Quote

AVG...or most all Anti-Virus apps are not designed to detect rootkits...

I Use This Tool...Oh, So it depends on the plugins.

I see, thanks Calum.
