If you create an image of your drive (or at least your system partition) you will be able to recover from almost any computer crisis with little or no pain & suffering. The image(s) can be saved to off-disk media or a second hard drive (the latter being the easiest and most convenient). I create 2 or 3 IMAGES a week, keeping the two most recent. In addition to the best of breed Acronis True Image, which is not free, there are a number of excellent free Disk Imaging Software options. In my opinion there is no reason or excuse for everyone not to use one.
