Of course, Apple sells mostly hardware, Microsoft sells mostly software. But in the end, Microsoft is doing very well ans Apple has to catch up.

Consider:
400 million machines are now running Windows 10

Not counting all the other windows versions...
- just the ones called Windows 10.
A 3 % growth means 12 million copies of Windows 10 is sold every YEAR, if they keep up that 3% growth. The cost of distributing the software is very small when compared to hardware. Now if MS gets $30 for every copy sold to OEM, it is a lot of cash for a product that can be distributed for NEAR zero cost.

Do the math.

That is not news, it is two years old. So by now there could be 410million.
The windows phone is near dead, yet there are many other devices doing Windows 10. Every copy represents more cash into Microsoft.

Or do you mean Mac?
In any case Microsoft probably got a big boost using their rather unethical funneling upgrade tactics which used intentionally poor designs to "trick" users into upgrading, like having the X button on a window act as confirm.
