1.

State and derive the perfect or ideal gas equation.

Answer»

Solution :(i) When the pressure of gas is kept constant, the volume of gas is directly proportional to the temperature of the gas.
(i.e.,) `V prop T`
`V/T` = constant .
(ii) The ideal gas equation is an equation , which relates all the PROPERTIES of an ideal gas. An ideal gas obeys Boyle.s LAW, Charles. law and Avagadro.s law,
PV = constant `""....(1)`
According to Charles.s law,
`V/T` = constant `""(2)`
According to Avagadro.s law,
`V/n= "constant"....(3)`
After combining EQUATIONS (1),(2) and (3)
`(PV)/(nT) = "constant"...(4)`
The above RELATION is called combined law of gases. If you consider a gas, which contains `mu` moles of the gas , the number of atoms contained will be equal to `mu` times the Avagandro.s number , `N_A`
(i.e,) `n = muN_A`
using equation (5) equation (4) can be written as
`PV//muN_AT` = constant
The value relation is called combined law of gases. If you consider a gas, which is called as Boltzmann constant `(1.38xx10^(-23)"J K "^(-1)).` Hence , we have the following equation,
`PV//muN_A T =k_B`
`PV=muN_Ak_BT`
Here `muN_Ak_B=R`. which is termed as universal gas constant whose value is `8.31 " Jmol"^(-1)K^(-1)`
`PV = RT`
Ideal gas equation is also called as equation of sate because it gives the relation between the state variables and it is used to describe the state of any gas.
