State Newton's 3rd Law of Motion. Explain(1) Why a gun recoils back.(ii) How boat is pushed back when a man jumps from the boat ?

Answer»

Newton's third lawis: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The statement means that in every interaction, there is a pair of forces acting on the two interacting objects. The size of the forces on the first object equals the size of the force on the second object

i) Thisrecoilis the result of action-reaction force pairs. A gunpowder explosion creates hot gases that expand outward allowing therifleto push forward on the bullet. Consistent withNewton's third lawof motion, the bullet pushes backwards upon the rifle.

ii)Theman jumpsout from theboat, tojumpouthehas topushhimself upward whilepushinghimself upward hehas to exert an amount of force to lift himself up. This upward force creates an equal and opposite force in downward direction which causes the boatto move backward.
