The divine origin of the caste system was emphasized in the Dharmasastra also. The highest position in the caste system was given to Brahmins by the Dharmasutras and Dharmasastras. The untouchables were placed at the bottom of the ladder. The caste of a person was based on birth. The Brahmins did all they could to make people follow the caste system.
