What are the factors on which the drift velocity of electrons in a metal depends?

Answer»

Drift velocity is the average velocity that a particle such as electron attains in a material due to electric field.

Current is directly proportional to Drift velocity ,which in a resistive material is, in turn, proportional to the magnitude of an external electric field. So Ohm’s equation can be written as;

u=n*E

where u=Drift velocity

n=Mobility

E=Mobility

So it depends upon Mobility and Mobility.

The formula for evaluating the drift velocity of charge carriers in a material of constantcross-sectionalarea is given by

u=j/n*q

j=current density

n=Charge carrier number density

q=Charge on the charge carrier

Above given factors also affect the drift velocity.
