What do you understand by the terms 'compression' and 'rarefaction'?

Answer»

Compression:

the action of compressing or being compressed.

the reduction in volume (causing an increase in pressure) of the fuel mixture in an internal combustion engine before ignition.

Rarefaction:

Rarefaction is the reduction of an item's density, the opposite of compression. Like compression, which can travel in waves, rarefaction waves also exist in nature. A common rarefaction wave is the area of low relative pressure following a shock wave.
