What is the need for doping an intrinsic semiconductor?

Answer»

The electric conductivity of an intrinsic semiconductor is very low at room temperature; hence no electronic devices can be fabricated using them. Addition of a small amount of a suitable impurity to an intrinsic semiconductor increases its conductivity appreciably.

Hence, intrinsic semiconductors are doped with impurities.
