When the ironmaster saw the peddler at his forge during an inspection, he mistook him for an old acquaintance who had served with him in a regiment. Since it was Christmas Eve, and the ironmaster lived alone with his only daughter for company, he wanted the peddler to accompany him to his house and celebrate Christmas. He desired his company on this festive day and so insisted on the request. When the peddler appeared before the ironmaster in his house the ironmaster saw that he was not the regimental comrade that he’d thought him to be, and that he had brought home a complete stranger. This disappointed and annoyed him for the peddler had not spoken the truth and had let the ironmaster to be deceived. This changed his attitude towards the peddler.

जब मालिक लोहार ने निरीक्षण के दौरान ढलाईघर में फेरीवाले को देखा, तो उसने गलती से उसे अपनी फौजी टुकड़ी के पुराने साथी के रूप में पहचाना, क्योंकि भट्टी की धीमी रोशनी में वह उसे बहुत स्पष्ट रूप से दिखाई नहीं दिया। चूँकि वह क्रिसमस की पूर्व संध्या थी व वह (मालिक लोहार) घर में केवल अपनी पुत्री के साथ रहता था; वह चाहता था कि फेरीवाला उसके साथ उसके घर जाए व क्रिसमस मनाए। इस त्योहार के दिन वह उसका सान्निध्य चाहता था। इसी कारण उसने उससे जोर देकर आग्रह किया। जब फेरीवाला मालिक लोहार के घर में उसके समक्ष प्रस्तुत हुआ तो मालिक लोहार को यह आभास हुआ कि वह व्यक्ति पुराना परिचित फौजी टुकड़ी का साथी नहीं था जैसा कि उसे भ्रम हुआ था। वह एक पूर्ण अपरिचित को अपने घर ले आया था। इससे उसे निराशा हुई व क्रोध आया, क्योंकि फेरीवाले ने सत्य नहीं बोला था व उसे भ्रमित होने दिया था। इस तथ्य ने फेरीवाले के प्रति उसके रवैये को बदल दिया।
