Thermdynamic feasibility of the reaction alone cannot decide the rate of the reaction.Explain with the help of one example.

Answer»

Solution :THERMODYNAMIC feasibility (-Ve `DeltaG`) cannot alone decide the rate of reaction because the reaction may be FEASIBLE but its rate my be very very slow because of very high activation energy.
For examples conversion of daimond to graphite is highly feasible but this reaction is very slow because it has high activation energy.

Write short notes on (a) Amalgamation (b) Hydrometallurgy (c) Self reduction (d) Electrolytic reduction

Answer»

Solution :(a) This process is used for the extraction of noble metals like gold and silver from the native ores. The finely crushed ore is brought into contact with mercury which combines with the metal forming its amalgam. The metal is then recovered by distilling the amalgam.
(b) Hydrometallurgy is the process of bringing the metal into solution by the action of suitable chemical reagents (e.g. sodium cyanide solution or chlorine in presence of water etc.) followed by recovery of the metal by the use of a proper precipitating agent which is a more electropositive metal. For example, poor ores of silver are suspended in a dilute solution of sodium cyanide and air is blown through it when the silver present goes into solution as the argentocyanide complex. From this solution the metal is precipitated by adding zinc turnings.
`{:(4Ag + 8 NaCN + O_(2)("air") + 2H_(2)O rarr 4 Na [Ag(CN)_(2)] + 4 NaOH),(or AgCl + 2NaCN rarr Na[Ag(CN)_(2)]+NaCl),(2Na [Ag(CN)_(2)]+Zn rarr Na_(2) [Zn(CN)_(4)] + 2Ag darr):}`
(C) In some cases no extra reducing agent is required. A part of the sulphide ore is changed to oxide or sulphate which then reacts with the remaining part to give the metal and sulphur dioxide. Copper and lead are obtained by this method.
`{:(2Cu_(2)S + 3O_(2) rarr 2Cu_(2)O + 2SO_(2)),(Cu_(2)S + 2Cu_(2)O rarr 6Cu+SO_(2)),(2PbS + 3O_(2) rarr 2PbO + 2SO_(2)),(PbS + 2O_(2) rarr PbSO_(4)),(PbSO_(4) + PbS rarr 2Pb + 2SO_(2)):}`
(d) The carbon reduction methods are not applicable for the highly electropositive and chemically active metals such as alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, aluminium etc. The OXIDES of these metals are very stable and have to be heated very strongly with carbon in order to reduce them to metals. But at high temperatures these metals combine with carbon to form CARBIDES, thus creating problem. Hence, these metals are extracted by the electrolytic reduction of their fused halides. The metal is liberated at the cathode. Aluminium is however obtained by the electrolytic reduction of alumina `(Al_(2) O_(3))` dissolved in molten cryolite `(Na_(3) AIF_(6))`.

Which of the following is best suited to dry crystals of ammine salts (complexes in which NH_3 is a ligand e.g., [Ni(NH_3)_6]Br_2)

Answer»

Anhy. `CaCl_2`
Anhy. CaO
A mixture of CaO and `NH_4Cl`
None of these

Solution :A mixture of CaO and `NH_4Cl` is used to dry CRYSTALS of COMPLEXES containing `NH_3` as ligands. The water liberated by moist crystals is absorbed by CaO. This moisture helps in the chemical reaction between CaO and `NH_4Cl` to CREATE an atmosphere of `NH_3`which prevents the decomposition of highly UNSTABLE complexes i.e., AMMINE salts.

Vapour pressure of solution containing 2 mol of liquid A (P_A^@ = 80 torr) and 3 mol of liquid B (P_B^@= 100 torr) is 87 torr. We canconclude that

Answer»

there is negative deviation from RAOULT's law
boiling POINT is higher than that EXPECTED for ideal solution
molecular attractions between unlike molecules arestronger than those between like molecules
all of these statements are correct

Solution :For ideal solution vapour pressure of solution `=P_A^@x_A + P_B^@x_B`
