Which of the following is generally prepared by chain growth free-radical polymerization?

Answer»

Polyacrylonitrile
Polytetrafluoroethylene
Polytetrafluoroethyllene
High density polythene

Solution :All are examples of addition polymers but except (3) all are prepared by chain-growth (or addition) FREE radical polymerisation. For example, the free radical generated from bonzoy1 peroxide `(R^(@))` ATTACKS an ethylene molucule to generate a new radical.
Which further reacts with another ethylene molecule and so on:
Very quickly a long chain `CH_(2)` groups is built, eventually this PROCESS is terminated by the combination of two long chain radials to give the polymer called polyethylene:
where `(CH_(2) - CH_(2))` is a conveneient shorthand convention for representing unit in the polymer. The value of `n` is understood to be vary large, con the other of hundreds. Polyethylene (in which every `C` atom is `sp^(3)` hybridized) is a very stable and quite inert substance. The individual chains pack together well and so ACCOUNT for the crystalline properties is the material. Polyethylene is mainly used in films in frozen food packing and other product wrapings. A specially treated type of polyethylene called Tyve is used for home insulation. Polymers that are made from only one type of nonomer, as polythene is, are called homopolymers.
Other inportant homopolymers are Teflon, polytetrafluoroethy lene: `- (CF_(2) - CF_(2))_(n)` and polyvinyl chloride: `(-CH_(2)-underset(CI)underset(|)(CH-))_(n)`
The chemistry becomes more complex if the starting units are asymmetric:
Several structurally different polymers can result from ad addition reaction of propylenes. If the additions occur randomly, we obtain the atactic polypropylenes, which do not pact together well. These polymers are rubbery, amorphous, and realtively weak. The two other possibilities are an isotactic structure, in whichthe R-group are all on the same side of the asymmeric carbon atoms, and asyndiotactic the asymmetric carbons. Of these, the isotactic isomer has a higher melting point and greater crystallinity and is endowed with superior mechanical proterties.

What are enzymes? Write a brief note on the mechanism of enzyme catalysis.

Answer»

Solution :Enzymes are complex protein molecules with three dimensional structures. They catalyse the chemical reaction in living organism. They are often present in colloidal state and extremely specific in catalytic action. Each enzyme produced in a particular living cell can catalyse a particular reaction in the cell.
Mechanism of enzyme catalysis: Mechanism of enzyme catalysed reaction is known as lock and key mechanism.
(i) Enzymes are highly specific in their action.
(ii) These specificity is due to the PRESSURE of active sites. The shape of active site of any given enzyme is like cavity such that only a specific substrate can fit into it. In the same way a key fit into lock. The specific binding needs to the FORMATION of an enzyme substrate complex which ACCOUNTS for high specificity of enzyme catalysed reactions.
(iii) Once the proper orientation is attained the substrate molecules reacts to form the product in two steps.
(iv) Since product molecule do not have any AFFINITY for the enzyme they leave the enzyme surface making room for fresh substrate.

Step : 1 Formation of enzyme - substrate complex
`underset("(Enzyme)")(E) + underset("(Substrate)")(S) iff underset("(Complex)")(ES)`
Step 2: Dissociation of enzyme-substratecomplexto form product
`underset("(Complex)")(ES) iff underset("( Enzyme Product Association)")([EP]) to underset("Slow step reaction")( underset("(Enzyme)")(E) + underset("(Product)")(P))`
The rateof the formation of product depends upon concentration of ES .

Write the order of thermal stabillity of the hydrides of group 16 elements.

Answer»

Solution :As the size of the element increases down the GROUP, the E-H bond length increases. In other words, the E-H bond DISSOCIATION energy decreases and hence E-H bond breaks more easily. Thus, the thermal stability of the hydrides of group 16 elements decreases downthe group, i.e., `H_(2)O gt H_(2)S gt H_(2)Se gt H_(2)Te gt H_(2)Po`.
