21111.

What are non ideal solutions ? Explain non ideal solutions with positive deviation and those with negative deviation.

Answer»

Solution :When a solution does not obey Raoult.s law over the entire range of concentration, then it is called non - ideal solution.
The vapour pressure of such a solution is either higher or lower than that predicted by Raoult.s law. If it is higher, the solution exhibits positive deviation and if it is lower, it exhibits negative deviation from Raoult.s law.

In case of positive deviation from Raoult.s law, A - B interactions are weaker than those between A - A or B - B, i.e., in this case the intermolecular attractive forces between the solute - solvent molecules are weaker than those between the solute - solute and solvent - solvent molecules. This means that in such solutions, molecules of A (or B) will find it EASIER to ESCAPE than in pure state. This will increase the vapour pressure and result in positive deviation.
Example : Mixtures of ehanol and acetone.
In pure ethanol, molecules are hydrogen bonded. On adding acetone, its molecules get in between the host molecules and break some of the hydrogen BONDS between them. Due to weakening of interactions, the solution shows positive deviation from Raoult.s law. Another example : `CS_(2)` and Acetone
Negative deviation :

In case of negative deviations from Raoult.s law, the intermolecul arattractive forces between A - A and B - B are weaker than those between A - B and leads to decrease in vapour pressure resulting in negative deviations.
Example : (i) Mixture of phenol and aniline. In this case the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between phenolicproton and lone pair on nitrogen atom of aniline is stronger than the respective intermolecular hydrogen bonding between similar molecules. (ii) A mixture of chloroform and acetone forms a solution with negative deviation from Raoult.s law. This is because chloroform MOLECULE is able to form hydrogen bond with acetobne molecule as shown.

This decreases the escaping tendency of molecules for each component and consequently the vapour pressure decreases resulting in negative deviation from Raoult.s law.

What is hydrometallurgy? Explain with an example.

Answer»

Solution :The process of extraction of metals by dissolving the ore in a suitable chemical reagent and the precipitation of the metal by more electropositive metal is called hydrometallurgy. For example, concentrated argentite, Ag2S is first treated with a dilute solution of NaCN to form the soluble complex, sodium dicyanoargentate (I).
`Ag_2S + 4NaCN to underset(("Soluble"))underset("Sodium dicyano argentate (I)")(2Na[Ag(CN)_2]) + Na_2S`
The solution is decanted off and made alkaline by adding NaOH and then treated with ZINC or ALUMINIUM to precipitate silver.
`2Na[Ag(CN)_2] + Zn to underset("Silver")(2Ag) +underset("Sodium tetracyanozincate (II)")(Na_2[Zn(CN)_4])`
`Na_2[Zn(CN)_4]+ 4NaOH to Na_2ZnO_2 + 4NaCN`
Gold is ALSO precipitated from its complex salt solution in a similar way.
`2K[Au(CN)_2] + Zn to K_2[Zn(CN)_4]+ 2Au`
Metals such as Ti, Zr, Ta, etc, are also obtained by reducing their complex salts with alkali metals or Al.
`K_2TiF_6 + 4K to 6KF + Ti`
`K_2ZrF_6 + 2Al to 2AlF_3 + 2K + Zr`

21123.

What is retention and inversion of configuration ? Explain with suitable example.

Answer»

Solution :If in a CHEMICAL reaction, no bonds to the stereocentre (chiral centre) are broken, the product will have the same general configuration of the groups around the stereocentre as that of reactant. Such a reaction is said to proceed with the RETENTION of configuration. Thus, the preservation of the spatial arrangment of bonds to an asymmetric centre during a chemical reaction is called retention of configuration. Consider an example of the reaction that takes place when (-) -2-methylbutan-1-ol is heated with hydrochloric acid (conc.)
However, if in a product, the atom occupies the opposite position to the REPLACED ligand at a chiral center, it is known as inversion of configuration.

The configuration at asymmetric center in the reactant and product is same but the sign of the optical rotation has changed in the product. This is because the two different compounds with same configuration at asymmetric center may have different optical rotation. One may be DEXTROROTATORY while other may be laevorotatory.

The resistance of a conductivity cell is measured as 190 Omega using 0.1 K KCl solution (specific conductance of 0.1 M KCl is 1.3 Sm^(-1)). When the same cell is filled with 0.003 M sodium chloride solution, the measured resistance is 6.3 Omega . Both these measurement are made at a particular temperature. Calculate the specificc and molar conductance of NaCl solution.

Answer»

Solution :GIVEN that `k = 1.3 Sm^(-1)` (for 0.1M KCl solution)
`R = 190 Omega`
`(l/A) = k.R = (1.3 Sm^(-1))(190 Omega) = 247 m^(-1)`
`k_(NACL) = 1/(R_((NaCl))) (l/A) = 1/(6.3 KQ) (247 m^(-1)) "" 6.3K Omega = 6.3 xx 10^(3) Omega`
`= 39.2 xx 10^(-3) Sm^(-1)`
`Lambda_m = (k xx 10^(-3) mol^1 m^3)/(M) = (39.2 xx 10^(-3)(Sm^(-1)) xx 10^(-3)(mol^(-1)m^3))/(0.003)`
`Lambda = 13.04 xx 10^(-3) Sm^(-2) mol^(-1)` .

Which of the followig is false?

Answer»

Saline water slows down rusting
In DANIELL cel, if concentrations of the solutions are DOUBLED, the EMF of the cell is also doubled.
EMF of a cell is an intensive whereas free energy change, `DeltaG` is extensive.
Galvanised iro sheets remain protected from rusting EVEN if a crack is developed.

Solution :Saline water speeds up rusting. Hence, (a) is false.
`Zn+Cu^(2+)toZn^(2+)+Cu,E_(cell)=E_(cell)^(@)-(0.0591)/(2)"log"([Zn^(2+)])/([Cu^(2+)])`
If `[Zn^(2+)]` and `[Cu^(2+)]` are doubled, there is no effect on EMF, hence (B) is wrong.
