Solve : Dell or *censored*? |
Answer» http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_41/b3954102.htm?chan=tcTheir business model has certainly had to change as the price of computers has gone down. My newest Dell is almost 4 years old (a P4 1.7Ghz), and I have never had problems with ANY of the ones I have had roll through here, but outsourcing tech support to India (or anywhere else) is a BAD MOVE! Unfortunately both ends need to be speaking the same language, and that doesn't qualify. I have also ordered parts and spoken to these folks and it was good that one of us knew what we were talking about. Unfortunately people expect some kind of miracular service for free even on budget priced machines. It's not going to happen with any company. In the end it is a business, and it must be somewhat profitable to continue. For the high end machines, corporate customers with higher profit margins and those with a service contract, this support issue needs to be improved no doubt. Same thing for the equipment. Unfortunately you do get what you pay for. Their stuff is proprietary mostly, and upgrades are limited. Proprietary is how they cut cost so they can stay competitive. They certainly are not the only manufacturer to do this. Again, I favor the Optiplex machines (have 8 of them now) and they have all been great. They all came with standard 3 year onsite warranties. The Dimensions are cheaper. (You can interpret that anyway you want.) On the other hand, many people are very satisfied.Dell is a FABULOUS company to deal with IF you are a corporate customer on their Gold Support level. I buy these machines for a living, and Dell is our contracted supplier and service provider. If a motherboard fails on one of our machines I fill out an online form and have a replacement within 48 hours, no questions asked. On the other side of the coin, I have also had to GO through their tech support when monitors and printers have failed on us. In the process, I have experienced all of the same frustrations MENTION in this article.I have called Dell before... Waiting time was a short 10 minutes, at lunch hour at that (usually MUCH longer than 10 minutes) They could not help me, becuase I called about McAfee (can't give support for a product that is not theirs) No problems with it so FAR... You know... The best support is probably from Gateway... Although, having that support comes at a price... Gateways have more problems, but they are able to be fixed... [glb]Flame[/glb]Is Dell run by microsoft? All the computers in the school are Dell pretty good too. well they would be if the teckies stop taking the RAM out of them!!! R0SSI find that "proprietary" and "cookie cutter" is not a satisfactory combination. I prefer "home brew". Maybe thats the deal.....mike/bills pc..........to oust anybody else.......the MDSEIL pc..... Quote Maybe thats the deal.....mike/bills pc..........to oust anybody else.......the mdseil pc..... Now you've got me. I don't have a clue what you're talking about. Quote

Solve : Music Industry - Copyright Crackdown? |
Answer» Well, besides the usic inductry fighting over peer to peer networks, it LOOKS like they're making it so that you can only make 3 copies of a single CD! Read on! http://pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,121949,00.asp "If you attempt to burn 20 copies and distribute them to all of your friends, that's not APPROPRIATE." What can I say? I like to share.Come up here to Canada! Downloading is legal!Go to Canada? Well, Trailer Boys is an excellent show.. I never pay for an album and I only share via Bit Torrent. Is that illegal too? It's just zeroes and ONES. No one can claim a zero and a one. I have yet to see a CD that I can't copy. I very rarely use my METHOD and only then for maybe one or two items for a friend. I don't want the music industries trash on my computer. And I don't buy CD's.Their little plan won't work lol What people will do is make one copy of the CD, and then when they want more than three copies, just make duplicates of the copied CD... Not too hard... lol As for file types not being able to to played on IPODs, well... People will figure out a way to fix that too lol [glb]Flame[/glb]People will always beat the machines! They forget that WE created the machines lol [glb]Flame[/glb]"SONY BMG labels discs that use the technology as copy-protected. The company says that its customers find a limit of three copies to be fair." Oh, I am so sure they even asked customers. And if they did, I'm sure they said three. Solve : The gloves are off? |
Answer» http://news.com.com/Novell+Vista+will+drive+users+to+Linux/2100-7344_3-5860451.html?tag=pulse.tbWonderful... Microsoft is actually better than Linux... This could cause issues... [glb]Flame[/glb]Microsoft has always been better! R0SSMicrosoft has always upped the ante on hardware requirements for it's new and improved OS. People are too ready to fallinto that upgrade trap and buy hardware and solftware solutions that probably only 10% max will ever use. I can surf the net as well (read about as quickly) with my trusty PII-400 and a 10 gig drive and Windows 98 with a broadband CONNECTION as my newer machines. On a PIII and 256 RAM, Linux will be just as quick, and FREE, and much more secure. If I gamed or did a lot of digital imaging that might be another matter, but I don't.What Linux are you using?Slackware runs great on the PII machine currently. I prefer the Debian variety - Mepis is also very good, and easy to INSTALL. For my everyday use (not tinkering away but need to be productive) I use Linspire. I have been very satisfied with that. It is a good starting point for people trying to transition. Its a PITY that people fell for msoft......and never used linux....a mutli/cross platform o/s choice may have undermined msoft......and may have them look rather silly. If under pressure nick ideas from elsewhere/or buy them out........when a mac pc booted......it beat a msoft pc..... |

Solve : Another reason not to trust Yahoo!? |
Answer» [size=16] Yahoo 'helped jail China writer'[/size] Internet giant Yahoo has been accused of supplying information to China which led to the jailing of a journalist for "divulging state SECRETS". Reporters Without Borders said Yahoo's Hong Kong arm helped China link Shi Tao's e-mail account and computer to a message containing the information. The media watchdog accused Yahoo of becoming a "police informant" in order to further its business ambitions. A Yahoo spokeswoman, Pauline Wong, said the company had no immediate comment. Shi Tao, 37, worked for the Contemporary Business News in HUNAN province, before he was arrested and sentenced in April to 10 years in prison. According to a translation of his conviction, reproduced by Reporters Without Borders, he was found guilty of sending foreign-based websites the text of an internal Communist Party message. Reporters Without Borders said the message warned journalists of the DANGERS of social unrest resulting from the return of dissidents on the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, in June 2004. Censorship fears The media organisation accused Yahoo of providing Chinese investigating organs with information that helped link Shi Tao's personal e-mail account and the text of the message to his computer. "We already knew that Yahoo! collaborates enthusiastically with the Chinese regime in questions of censorship, and now we know it is a Chinese police informant as well," Reporters Without Borders said in a statement. Western internet companies have REGULARLY been criticised for agreeing to China's strict rules governing the internet, which Communist Party leaders fear could be a tool to spread dissent. Microsoft was criticised in June for censoring what bloggers write. The companies say they have to abide by local regulations, and point out that since China is set to be the world's biggest internet market, they cannot ignore it. Earlier this month Yahoo paid $1bn (£556m) for a stake in China's biggest e-commerce firm, Alibaba.com. source. Yahoo has never been interested in protecting your privacy!TOSSBAGS! i nver trusted them anyway lol its microsft all the way I don't trust them, nor do I trust anyone on the web for that matter. However, REALLY... You shouldn't be doing illegal tings on the web. However, as far as yahoo! goes, they should not be doing this, becuase of the privacy act... I see a courthouse in Yahoo!'s future... :-/ [glb]Flame[/glb]arent they not breaking the Data Protection Act? Quote I see a courthouse in Yahoo!'s future... That would be a Yes then lol |

Solve : Windows Vista won't like your monitor? |
Answer» Microsoft is gonna screw ya agin! Microsoft has admitted that IE7 will not be W3C compliant. In other words, it will not be compliant with industry stantards for the internet. Who cares! Mozilla Firefox! Say, Dummy, what kind of OS do you recommend? Quote The new DRM “features” of Windows Vista require that your monitor be compatible with something called Digital Content Protection. When you are TRYING to play a digital video file of any kind, Vista will CHECK to see whether or not your monitor is HDCP compliant. If it is then you’re fine and everything plays just like you would expect. So, if you own a legal copy, but an older monitor, you can not play certain files.. But if you own an illegal copy and the right monitor, you can play these files?! Quote Say, Dummy, what kind of OS do you recommend? For power users: 2k, XP, or Linux For ordinary everyday computer illiterates like me: 9x I have 98, 98se, 2k, and linux. Don't use linux much. Not enough time to play with it. Quote For ordinary everyday computer illiterates like me: 9x Then I wonder what a power user is, in your eyes.. Where can I obtain a good copy of Linux? Happen to have a 466Mhz Celeron/64MB RAM and 6.4GB HDD set up where I can't find any drivers for (Packard bell) so I may as well reformat and experiment. Does Linux work the same when it comes to drivers?Packard Bell is a proprietary machine so I don't know what will work on it and what won't. If it has a CD-rom, you can get Knoppix as an ISO image and burn to a CD. You can then boot from the CD and play around without actually installing on the HD. Knoppix will run from the CD and you can use it to access the HD, printer, etc. If you like the way it works you can then go for something a little higher up the latter. There will be a pretty good learning curve.I will look into Knoppix, then. Are there different versions or will simply typing Knoppix into http://www.google.com work? |

Solve : Microsoft steps up piracy fight? |
Answer» Microsoft has stepped up its fight against software piracy by requiring users to verify their copies of the Windows operating system. Anyone downloading updates for Windows XP will be required to check that their operating system is genuine. Security updates are exempt from this in order to prevent people spreading viruses across the internet. A third of software worldwide is fake, according to industry group, the Business Software Alliance. Losing billions Microsoft said that more than a third of its software is counterfeit, which it says costs it billions of dollars of lost income. With Windows accounting for 90% of operating systems sold worldwide, cracking down on the pirates is one of the few ways for Microsoft to expand its business. "This is another tool in our arsenal," said David Lazar, director of Genuine Windows for Microsoft. Customers who discover that their copy of Windows is pirated have two options. They can get a free version of Windows if they fill out a counterfeit report identifying the source of the software, providing proof of purchase and returning the counterfeit CD. If they are unable to provide all the information, filling out a report will entitle them to receive a copy of Windows XP Home Edition for the REDUCED price of £56 or Windows XP Professional Edition for £86. Genuine article The new policy is part of Windows Genuine Advantage, a scheme SET up by Microsoft in September to encourage people to use legitimate software. The firm has been offering incentives, in the form of freebies such as photo slide-show software, to persuade people to use the service. "We want to give customers a reason to purchase the genuine product," said Alex Hilton, anti-piracy manager for Microsoft. So FAR, 45 million copies of Windows have been verified via the system, although Microsoft has, as yet, no figures to GAUGE what proportion of these failed the test. Neither has it set a figure on the level it would like to see piracy reduced to. "Aspirationally we want to remove piracy altogether and we feel the MAJORITY of people want to use our software legitmately," said Mr Hilton. He advised anyone looking to purchase Windows XP to make sure they only do so via trusted shops and websites.aww *censored*.... Microsoft will lose Millions... BOO fuc*ing HOO Well, i gave my XP disc to a friend...is that illegal?I rarely work with Warez, but the thought of having Microsoft loose millions didn't seem like a bad thing to me! Perhaps it'll wake them up. Although the discount is nice if you are prepared to rat out a friendly fella who only tried to assist you. |

Solve : Good news for customers? |
Answer» Hey! Well, I read in the paper today that companies who make printers such as Dell, HP, Lexmark, etc. Are now going to be lowering their prices for COMPETITION reasons, so you shoudl notice a refreshing drop in prices for printers now! Now... Word has it that HP constantly comes out with the latest technology faster than the other companies... So if you want the freshest technolgy, I coudl see how HP would be your option Not sure about where you live but in the uk,its cheaper to dump a printer when the ink runs out, then buying the carts for it.... Then people should stop buying the cartridges that are not recycled. There are cartridges available that are refilled and they are often cheaper than brand new cartidges. Twenty-nine quid new printer with two carts b/w colour....with it? and another con.epson carts/hp hold less....than lexmark....the final option is....pen to paper....that old anit it: -------------------------------------------------------------------- Refills that seldom work......16quid b /w........colour 19 quid....recommended by which uk ------------------------------------------------------------------------ refill set that is messy and that is rubbish as well 10 quid b/w.... all tested on quality paper....not the cheepo stuff.......verdict buy a new printer.......so now with recycle the printer........greed and praying on people lack of KNOWLEDGE.......lets strip em////con emWe pay less for the refilled cartridges than we do for a new printer.I need a new printer, for everyday stuff like printing pictures and text. What should I get for less than £100? Well, prices in MOST places are lowering, however, a great brand is HP... Rather than playing the same game *censored* everyone ELSE and lowering their prices, HP improves their technology... Reliable... I just bought one yesterday actually About 80 dollars. Maybe less depending on where you shop... [glb]Flame[/glb] |

New features include: * 1080p Display Support Option * Catalyst™ Control Center Un-install Option 1080p Display Support Option Catalyst™ 5.7 introduces support enhancement to the display support options found in the Digital Panel Properties of the Catalyst™ Control Center. This enhancement will offer a 1080p standard format option for a displays that are reporting incomplete or incorrect capabilities in their EDID information. When a user chooses to remove the Catalyst™ Control Center, all desktop shortcuts, user defined profiles, and hotkeys will be COMPLETELY removed from the system. All custom setting will need to be recreated when the Catalyst™ Control Center is installed once again. Performance Improvements Enhancements to our driver's internal memory management bring significant BENEFITS to 64MB and 128MB framebuffer configurations in Catalyst™ 5.7. The resulting performance gains are most apparent in high resolution, everything on modes, when running applications that use a significant amount of graphics memory. Examples include: * 5-15% gains in 3DMark05 on some products * 20-60% gain in Far Cry Regulator across multiple settings * 25-60% gains in Half-Life 2 at 1600x1200 4xAA 8xAF * 40-60% gains in UT2004 at 1600x1200 6xAA 16xAF * 50-100% improvement in Comanche4 at 1600x1200 6xAA 16xAF * 50-200% gains in certain ShaderMark tests at high resolution Note: The exact magnitude of these performance benefits will vary depending on the product configuration, clock speeds and available system memory. All of the changes noted are specific to 64MB and 128MB framebuffer configurations. Performance of 256MB and 512MB boards is already very good at these settings. Solve : An interesting chart.? |
Answer» http://www.dozleng.com/updates/index.php?pg=redundant It sure makes M$oft look good.Fed ....... That's a good find . M/S Antispyware is really ONE of the better apps out there . ( In my opinion) Cheers dl65 Adaware is most likely the worst freeware spy scanner out there. It's not even in the list! * cough cough * Freeware ... It's finalized, but the owners might have given up on it... Another DOWNSIDE to freeware... Occasionally, this will happen... [glb]Flame[/glb]So far, Giant anti spyware may be the most efficient spyware scanner/preventer out there. Which is Beta, Microsoft and Freeware. Your logic is flawed, Flame. Generally, freeware... Well... It just sucks... However, it DOES depend on the developer(s).. Microsoft has money up the ying yang, but a lot of other developers such as Lavasoft, etc. are not so "RICH"... For some reason, developers that are not "heard of" SEEM to make "half assed" products... Althoguh, it does make a diference on how you are heard of... For Instance, we can say that NORTON makes good products... Good rep... Then we hear about McAfee... They are well heard of, but for the wrong reason... it just depends on the developers I suppose... [glb]Flame[/glb]And on the person using the applications.. |

Have you TESTED/verified this yourself, Fed?No, I haven't tested it, I have dialup so when I saw the download size I didn't read much further. I put it here for other people, besides, I have a small chrome engineer's hammer I USE to fix my computer with. I OFTEN KICK the case, then break something, regret it and move on. Solve : Austrialian fiber build out? |
Answer» From Fierce Telcom. NBN Co., the company set up by the Australian government to build and operate the country's high-speed National Broadband Network, has chosen Nokia Siemens Networks to light up its OPTICAL transport network.I find it hard to BELIEVE the "last mile" improvements are included in that project...I agree. $391,000,000 is a lot of money to me, but to build a fiber network for an entire country, that's not very much. I THINK the "partnerships" they briefly mention is where the last mile will COME from, at a lot more cost. |
