Solve : Microsoft To Release Test Updates to Windows 7 Beta Systems? |
Answer» http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/02/21/microsoft-to-release-test-updates-to-windows-7-beta-systems/ Microsoft plans to deliver up to 5 test updates to PCs running the Windows 7 Beta (Build 7000) via Windows Update, beginning from February 24th, 2009. These updates will not be installed automatically, and user will be notified, even though Windows Update has been configured for automatic update. It’s not CLEAR if the leaked Windows 7 Build 7022 system will get the test updates or not. In order to install these test updates, user will have to go to the Windows Update control panel and manually start installation. The updates will be clearly TITLED as a test update. According to Windows Team blog, these updates do not deliver any new features or fixes. The test updates are only used to test the Windows 7 servicing infrastructure, which is used to update Windows 7. For user who doesn’t WANT to install the updates, just right click on each update and select “Hide update” to prevent it from being shown in the LIST of available updates in Windows Update or Microsoft Update. |

Solve : NYT: Google's PowerMeter to let users track electricity usage? |
Answer» The New York Times is reporting Google will announce a free web service tomorrow called PowerMeter that'll let users track energy consumption in their homes or business, provided there's a means to upload the data. That part of the EQUATION's gonna be up to other companies to create compatible DEVICES, and while no manufacturing partners have been named, we'd suspect strange bedfellow GE will probably jump aboard pretty quickly. The service is expected to roll out in the next few months. Ready to give the boys in Mountain View even more access to your life? Link to the new Google service YouTube promotional video Link to news article so it costs money?Nope, unless I read the FAQ wrong. Quote How much does this cost? Are these smart meter things new? About how long have they been outBeen out a few YEARS. I recall my power company coming to my house last year to replace my meters with the new smart meter. Basically it allows the power company to remotely que it just by driving down the street. Saves them a lot of time since they don't need to manually walk and look at the meter. It's actually taking inventory of the contents of your basement... Darn, I'm GOING to have to rethink my whole obstacle course to the meter... All those wasted years digging that bottomless pit... |

Solve : The End of Zlob? |
Answer» Sounds good but reading the article is sort of alarming. We haven't seen the worst malware yet. The Zlob Trojan, which was the one of the most, if not the most, active Trojan displaying advertisements and installing Rogue anti-spyware programs, is no longer under development. This Trojan was responsible for promoting and installing rogue anti-spyware programs onto millions of computers. In a a message found encoded in one of their Trojans, we learn that the Zlob author is closing down shop and moving on to other malware projects such as shellcodes and rootkits. Though this is good in terms of rogue programs, it does not bode well for future malware that we will see coming from this, unfortunately, talented programmer. Talented guy. Too bad he's a crook. Solve : Hackers Hack a street sign "Zombies Ahead"? |

Answer» I love generators....... QUOTE from: evilfantasy on February 02, 2009, 07:00:22 PM Ha love it. rofl!! I wanna try this hahahathis is just as funny as making spoof Yu-Gi-Oh cards *echoing movie preview guy voice* "When Brian Griffin gets sucked into the Yu-Gi-Oh card game.....It's up to stewie to save him from total annihilation" [attachment deleted by admin]back in the day I made REALLY ridiculous pokemon card thingies hand-drawn. Most of them had hilarious attacks- I can't remember any specifically, stuff like, with one, Half golduck, have Dragonair- "Flip a coin. If heads, this attack does 10 damage. If tails, this attack does nothing. Either way, this attack does nothing. Goldanair does 500 damage to itself. Draw 5 cards. Search your deck for a card named Goldanair and put it into your hand, and shuffle five cards from your hand into your opponents deck." And flavour text like, "NOBODY knows *censored* happened to create this pokemon, but most theorize it involved alcohol." I had some hilarious ones but I can't actually remember them...I saw a photobucket account with tons of fake pokymon card templitesto bad the series has gone down hill, the originals were so great Quote from: macdad- on February 05, 2009, 06:11:18 AM to bad the series has gone down hill, the originals were so great Ahh yes- So many WASTED hours with pokemon red and blue- and what to show for it? lvl 100 Charizard, 98 Victreebel, 79 Dugtrio... and I forget the rest of them. Probably mewtwo in there too. Pretty much the same story with SILVER/Gold, except the level different is larger- Level 100 Meganium, level 70 Tyranitar. Emulation is great. Say there was a Gameboy emulator written in Visual Basic 6.0 even- runs good too.still have Gold, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, and LeafGreen i stopped after silver and gold. Answer» my DSL AVERAGE speed is about 384KBps, but thats great, since im still using the same DSL router since 2003. and its been great, but i should probably get a replacement soon, since i had Bellsouth(they were the ones that offered the DSL service) and Bellsouth was bought out by ATnT, so a replacement might be in order in a year or two.avg speed for me about 10,000 kbps- Cable.nice, im guessing one of the Motorola Cable routers? My connection now: nice, im guessing one of the Motorola Cable routers? Why, you must be psychic! Connected to my Wireless-N Router, which I connect to via my main PC with a gigabit LAN card and my laptop using it's built-in Wireless-N Wifi. Solve : Nvidia vs. ATI: Who’s the Fastest, Anyway?? |
Answer» http://www.pcworld.com/article/155555/article.html?tk=nl_cxablg A major upset took place recently in the ongoing battle for high end video card supremacy. For the past couple of years, it has mainly been a one horse race as Nvidia's 8800 series took the crown and wouldn't let go. After the June release of Nvidia's latest creation, the GTX 280, it seemed like the green guys would continue their dominance and maintain the lead in the high performance market. Oh, how times have changed. The release of ATI's midrange 4870 video card sent out shockwaves by providing blistering performance while costing hundreds less than the GTX 280. This left Nvidiain the unfamiliar position of scrambling to STAY COMPETITIVE, which it did with significant price cuts of their 200 series cards just weeks after release. The real wake-up call arrived with news that a dual GPU version of the 4870 was due to release, which brings us to where we are today. This fall, a new performance champion was crowned as ATI's 4870 X2 graphics card made its official DEBUT. The X2 easily outperforms every other card currently on the market. With two RV770 graphics processors paired together on one PCB, this monster is basically CrossFire on a single card and provides the performance you would expect from a couple of 4870 video cards in tandem. But unlike running two 4870 videocards, the X2 will run in CrossFire mode on any chipset! Each GPU sports 1GB of GDDR5 memory and makes this card a MUST have for ultra-high resolution gaming. You'll want to pair it with a large monitor to make use of all the graphics processing power (think 1920x1200 resolution and up) and at least a 650 watt power supply with both an 8-pin and 6-pin PCIe connector. The video card runs hot and the fan can get a bit noisy but these quirks come with the territory when you play with high performance gear. For what it gives you, the X2 almost makes its $500 sticker price seem like a bargain. If you want the fastest graphics card on the planet, look no further than ATI's 4870 X2. i have a 4870 myself and its huge! apply the hack and its not too hot very good cardSince Nvidia took their performance crown back with the 295, the 4870x2's price has dropped 100 dollars, down to $400(on newegg). The interesting part is, the 295 barely outperforms the 4870x2 and costs $110 more, but I guess if you must have the most powerful. ati did GREAT last year, and are even looking strong into this year. I'm interested to see if Nvidia can actually find an answer other than the 295, and what ati's 5 series will look like, rumored to release Q3 this year.Me personally,I really like the ATI 4870x2 it's a great card but i'm sure Nvidia will up the stakes again i don't really think the new 295 is up to the task, but hey thats my opinionEverybody knows Hercules Monochrome is the bestest.i think nvidia is (i dont have much exp on video cards) |

Solve : Beware of the Ideacom driver update? |
Answer» HERE I was a little surprised this morning to see Windows Vista offer me this OPTIONAL driver update via Windows Update: I don’t have a touch screen on this particular machine, so I was immediately suspicious. Sure enough, a bit of searching turns up PLENTY of reports (like this one at DSL Reports) from people who installed the driver without thinking, to then discover that their existing PS/2 mouse or notebook touchpad stopped functioning. The phantom update appears to be afflicting both XP and Vista systems. If you install this inadvertently and find yourself with a nonfunctional mouse, the obvious solution is to use System Restore to roll back to the point before the driver was installed. However, at least one report I read online says this option doesn’t work. I haven’t tested so can’t say for sure whether this is true. Another option, which reportedly does work on Vista, is the Roll Back Driver option. From Device Manager, select the defective device (probably under the Human Interface Devices category), right-click and choose Properties, click the Driver tab, and then click Roll Back Driver. As an alternative, you can uninstall the driver from Device Manager. If you have a USB mouse, plug it in and use it to navigate through Device Manager. If you don’t have a USB mouse to use, you’ll have to do all this with the keyboard, as follows: 1. Press the Windows logo key to open the Start menu and then type device. 2. Use the Down arrow key if necessary to select Device Manager from the search results list and press Enter. 3. If you see a UAC prompt, press the Left arrow key to move the focus to the Continue button, and then press Enter. 4. Press Tab to move the focus into the device list. Use the Down arrow key to move to the Human Interface Devices category, press the Right arrow key to expand that category, and then use the Down arrow key to select the IdeaCom device. 5. Press Enter to open the shortcut menu for this device (or use Shift+F10, is the universal keyboard shortcut that simulates a right-click, and then use the arrow keys to select Properties from the menu and press Enter). 6. From the Device dialog box, press Ctrl+Tab to move through the tabs until the Driver tab is visible. 7. Note that the R is underlined on the Roll Back Driver button text, indicating that it is an accelerator key. Press Alt+R to begin the driver rollback. If you actually have an IdeaCom touch screen, of course, this advice doesn’t apply.I guess the best THING to do is not to install it...I just realized, that I SAW this thing in my updates couple of days ago. I obviously skipped it, and made it hidden. |

Solve : Woman blames Dell for missing online classes? |
Answer» ABBIE Schubert paid more than $1,100 for a Dell laptop hoping to enroll in online classes at Madison Area Technical College, or MATC. But something stopped her: she bought an operating system for her computer she never heard of, Ubuntu. Link Haha, sucks for her!Alright, got one word for that woman. FAIL!Quote from: Ghost_In_The_Machine on JANUARY 16, 2009, 05:17:47 PM Alright, got one word for that woman.agreed. according to the article, the computer came with openoffice. saying "duh, I didn't know it was compatible!" is pretty much saying, "I never even knew it was on the computer and if I did I never started it, and if I EVER did that I never looked at the "Save As" Dialog. maybe NEXT time she should pay closer attention to the details of her order, especially when she paid 1,100 dollars for it. additionally- when did Ubuntu EVER look like windows? The woman is clearly not fit to own a computer. Now you might call me crazy, but when I spend money I actually look at what I'm buying. The more I spend, the closer I look. Weird, I know. Saying the whole thing stemmed from that is just ridiculous - firstly she should have been aware what she was buying, secondly she should have learned how to use it or changed to Windows if she really couldn't be bothered. Saying Dell "discouraged" her by telling her the truth is just idiotic. "Later, she discovered Ubuntu might look like Windows, but it doesn't always act like it." What? No way! I think I may have to do something ELSE before I bang my head on my desk and break it.thats why i prefer to buy at the Store instead. Dell should hire her instead of sending their Lawyers...that'll teach Her.Quote from: patio on January 17, 2009, 10:44:12 AM Dell should hire her instead of sending their Lawyers...that'll teach Her. rofl! what a stupid personThat is indeed an EPIC FAILQuote from: Helpmeh on January 22, 2009, 03:18:15 PM That is indeed an agreed |

Solve : Handheld Computer is First PC with Organic Screen? |
Answer» Forget the screen, look at the size of that thing. soon there gonna make phones the size of a ant Are you saying that the ants are getting bigger? Anyway; I can't stand people on their cell-phones. the ones that are proud of being able to send 30 barely coherent messages a second, without realizing that their "talent" has no real practical use. Typing on a full-size keyboard, on the other hand, can be used in a variety of fields, since nowadays a lot of information used by other industries is handled by computer; and people still need to punch a lot of that in. Some people actually have a use for a cell-phone; mainly those that literally need to be available 24/7 (this is applicable to a lot of people, network admins, for example, and a lot of people that work for oil companies), but I don't honestly think that all the people I see with cell-phones actually NEED them, and more to the point, wether it makes their lives any better. Instead of admiring the scenery of the backroad they had to take because of the construction on the highway, people would rather yack to their friend Mabel about how cute the guy she almost hit at the intersection was, or how she was scared the old lady had dented her bumper when she hit her, especially at the speed she was driving. Introduce typing into that mix, and you can see the potential for catastrophe. Not only do they need one hand for holding the phone, but they now need to use the other hand to peck at small membrane buttons and take their eyes off the road to do so; they end up steering with their brake-side leg and jamming the accelerator with the other, weaving in and out of traffic while they message their friend bob about how exciting it was to send the text message to Mabel, without even realizing that they caused a truck carrying nuclear waste to tip over and now the trailer has spilled it's glowing green goo all over the road. of course if they did see it, they would just HAVE to send a text message about it to somebody. bc EVERY time i see u in a post u seem too get madder and madderQuote from: tylerisdabest on January 13, 2009, 08:06:56 PM i agree with you calum i got a freking phantec matrix and its got 2 keypads a numaral and a keybord and it annoys me that the keys are soo tiny because it hurts, soon there gonna make phones the size of a antSo ... why do you have it, again, if you don't like it and it hurts you? At BC - I'm not going to respond to all of that, but I agree about text messages - I can't stand "ppl hu tlk like dis bcos its quikr". It takes them twice the time to encode the message in idiot-ese, then takes the person receiving just as long to decode it. Why not type normally? I could see the point if they were charged by the letter (maybe) but as it stands it's ridiculous. I only shorten my messages like that if I'm one character, or something like that, over the limit for one message - then, I lose those few characters somewhere so I can just send one SMS instead of two. People who talk on the phone whilst driving also scares me. Considering the fact that a DRIVER needs at least one hand for the steering, and the other to either steer, change gear, use indicators/lights etc, and a large amount of concentration on the road, I fail to see how people can use the phone with no hands and no concentration, it doesn't work."hands-free" phones in cars are a bit more understandable, since people talk to passengers a lot while driving. On the other hand- that causes a lot of accidents too. they were actually discussing making it illegal to talk on a cellphone while driving, but I cannot remember if that fell through or not. Quote from: tylerisdabest on January 13, 2009, 08:35:25 PM bc every time i see u in a post u seem too get madder and madder ahh, that's where those shipments of BC dolls went. just post'em back to me, I'll pay the shipping, k?Hands-free phones, I'm still not a fan of but can live with people using them. Here, it's illegal to use a mobile phone whilst driving, but it's not common that people are caught. Hands-free kits are acceptable though.I use MBoard quite frequently...but i wouldn't call it txtspk. That's different, I'd say that's an acceptable shortening, in the same way that I don't want to type Random Access Memory, Graphics Processing Unit, et cetera. The difference between a few contractions and an illegible message is, to me, quite clear.I'm with Calum on this, it's slick and pretty but looks pretty useless as far as functionality IMO. |

Answer» An interesting statement from their last MacWorld Expo: At Apple's FINAL keynote address to the Macworld faithful today, the company made an announcement that should change the way MUSIC is purchased from now on—roll it back to the old, better way, I mean. Apple will no LONGER put DRM code on its iTunes music files. Full StoryIt's about TIME! Solve : Can Microsoft Juggle 3 OSs?? |
Answer» So... to discover where all these rumours came from about Superfetch... I googled "superfetch sucks". why do some say 128MB for Win9x and 256 for WinXP? does that mean Windows XP is worse then WIN 9x?Very good point...with a little adjustment XP will run on 256MB, but we all know, that 512MB would be REAL minimum, 1GB preferable. XP was introduced in 2001. Around 2000 1GB of RAM was selling for almost $1,000. If at that time, SOMEONE was advising to get 1GB for XP...are you nuts?! okay... so the proper thing to have said would have been: Quote why do did people say 128MB for Win9x and 256 for WinXP? does that mean Windows XP is worse then win 9x? But come on now- I ran WinXP with 96MB! I don't recall it being painfully slow... although I wasn't exactly CONDITIONED to enjoy speed after working with a 386 prior to that, so I doubt it would have been enjoyable to anyone else. Heck- I was just happy I could use the SetLayeredWindowAttributes() Function.Quote from: Broni on January 17, 2009, 10:32:53 PM Every single Windows version USES more RAM, than the previous one. Are you SURPRISED? Wrong... Vista is said to require 2GB of RAM. Win 7 is advertised as requiring 1GB. It appears that either win7 doesn't use RAM in the same way as vista (implying superfetch isn't as good as they thought) or that there's been some serious streamlining of windows services? FBQuote Win 7 is advertised as requiring 1GBSays who? M$?I'm not sure i get your point FBhttp://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx Quote # 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor ...which is ridiculous Remember, that M$ says very same thing about Vista: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/system-requirements.aspx Quote # 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processorActually in MS's defense ( i can't believe i would ever type this in Public ) to test it i removed 1G from my new build to see how Windows 7 was...practically no noticeable difference between 1 and 2G ...so they may just have gotten it right this time...say, did I mention I ran XP with 32MB of RAM? ahh, and then the fun of running windows 3.1 on my 286 with monochrome graphics and 384K of extended memory... wow. I have not used the terms extended or conventional memory in a long time.patio I'd like to see what would you have to say after running 7 for several months, and have bunch of programs installed. I believe, a pristine Vista installation will run on 1GB just fine, too. Probably same goes for new XP installation on 256MB, or maybe even 128MB.Quote from: Broni on January 19, 2009, 06:37:09 PM 256MB, or maybe even 128MB. Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 19, 2009, 08:15:26 AM say, did I mention I ran XP with 32MB of RAM? Although- it wasn't pleasant.Although it's not a full build Broni i can see your point...however i have about 20 different apps installed on the W7 side and it's still pretty snappy on 1G. Wait let me throw AutoCad and Photoshop at it..... hmmm. I only have 1GB in this PC, and it's maxed out... It's kind of weird that my laptop is way more powerful then my desktop. It just... feels wrong. say did I mentio |

Solve : Cloaking device may make cell phone static vanish? |
Answer» A new light-bending material has brought scientists one step closer to creating a cloaking device that could hide objects from sight. Beyond possible military APPLICATIONS, it also might have a very practical use by making mobile communications clearer, they said on Thursday. LinkWould be INTERESTING if they could create some material that literally cloaks anything its applied too... Albeit, it would be annoying as well. I'll put a scenereo to play... SAY you wanted to play a harmless yet annoying prank on your friend, you walk into the store, you see this "Cloaking car cover", which "Guarantees that no one will see the junk that LITTERS your YARD!". You buy one, throw it over his/her car, this is what happen when he walks out of his house with his friend looking for his car: "Dude, where's my car?" "Wheres your car dude?" It could be played on a smaller, yet equally annoying scale. Like, if you wrapped there cell phone in such a material so that every time it rang it seemed that the sound was coming from thin air. Getting my hands on such a material would be a bad thing for the sanity of many people. |

Solve : Three million hit by Windows worm? |
Answer» Three million hit by Windows worm USB drives, BBC The worm can also spread via USB flash drives. A worm that SPREADS through low security networks, memory sticks, and PCs without the latest security updates is posing a growing threat to users. The malicious program, known as Conficker, Downadup, or Kido was first discovered in October 2008. Although Microsoft released a patch, it has gone on to infect 3.5m machines. Experts warn this figure could be far higher and say users should have up-to-date anti-virus software and install Microsoft's MS08-067 patch. Right now, we're seeing hundreds of thousands of [infected]UNIQUE IP addresses Toni Koivunen, F-Secure According to Microsoft, the worm works by searching for a Windows executable file called "services.exe" and then becomes part of that code. It then copies itself into the Windows system folder as a random file of a type known as a "dll". It gives itself a 5-8 character name, such as piftoc.dll, and then modifies the Registry, which lists key Windows settings, to run the infected dll file as a service. Once the worm is up and running, it creates an HTTP server, resets a machine's System Restore point (making it far harder to recover the infected system) and then downloads files from the hacker's web site. INFECTED IPs WORLDWIDE China 38,277 Brazil 34,814 Russia 24,526 India 16,497 Ukraine 14,767 Italy 13,115 Argentina 11,675 Korea 11,117 Romania 8,861 United States 3,958 United Kingdom 1,789 Source: F-Secure Most malware uses one of a handful of sites to download files from, making them fairly easy to locate, target, and shut down. But Conficker does things differently. Anti-virus FIRM F-Secure says that the worm uses a complicated algorithm to generate hundreds of different domain names every day, such as mphtfrxs.net, imctaef.cc, and hcweu.org. Only one of these will actually be the site used to download the hackers' files. On the face of it, tracing this one site is almost impossible. Speaking to the BBC, Kaspersky Lab's security analyst, Eddy Willems, said that a new strain of the worm was complicating matters. "There was a new variant released less than two weeks ago and that's the one causing most of the problems," said Mr Willems "The REPLICATION methods are quite good. It's using multiple mechanisms, including USB sticks, so if someone got an infection from one company and then takes his USB stick to another firm, it could infect that network too. It also downloads lots of content and creating new variants though this mechanism." "Of course, the real problem is that people haven't patched their software. If people do patch their software, they should have little to worry about," he added. Technicians have reverse engineered the worm so they can predict one of the possible domain names. This does not help them pinpoint those who created Downadup, but it does give them the ability to see how many machines are infected. "Right now, we're seeing hundreds of thousands of unique IP addresses connecting to the domains we've registered," F-Secure's Toni Kovunen said in a statement. "We can see them, but we can't disinfect them - that would be seen as unauthorised use." Microsoft says that the malware has infected computers in many different parts of the world, with machines in China, Brazil, Russia, and India having the highest number of victims. Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7832652.stm There are two things of importance here. 1) This is an example of why it is ALWAYS important to keep Automatic Updates enabled. 2) An easy way to help avoid these types of malware is to turn off all Autorun/Autoplay options in Windows. How to Disable AutorunI think our health ministry may have been hit by this one. I was just reading about it in our Computer World paper. The reckon it was bought in on a USB drive. It took them 15 days to get rid of it and had to shutdown internet connections to stop it spreading. Its name was W32.Downadup. Strange this should be posted right when I'm reading about it. Very NASTY. These are also reasons that employers, including the US Military, have started banning the use of flash drives. |

Solve : Microsoft changes ‘Windows Genuine Advantage’? |
Answer» With Windows 7, 'Genuine' is out; 'Activation' is in Microsoft will be changing to name of it’s activation and validation system from “Windows Genuine Advantage” to “Windows Activation Technologies” according to a report by Mary-Jo Foley. However, the “Genuine” brand isn’t completely disappearing. A press release states that Microsoft will continue to deliver genuine updates and notifications for XP users. The program has been criticized for its punishment tactics and false-positive results, even THOUGH Microsoft has fixed some of these problems in Vista SP1. According to Microsoft, Windows 7’s activation will be built on the same software protection platform that was part of Vista, with some minor TWEAKS made for Windows 7. “In Windows 7 we modified this PROCESS: When customers choose to activate later they will see a DIALOG box highlighting how activation helps them IDENTIFY if their copy of Windows is genuine and be allowed to proceed immediately without a 15-second delay. In Windows 7 we’ve made changes so that users will see more informative notifications messages and be able to more easily complete the tasks they need to.”, said Joe Willians, general manager, Worldwide Genuine Windows in a Q&A session. Solve : Creative Labs Charges "Maintenance Fee" For Rebate? |

Answer» Creative Labs has found a great new WAY to minimize the risk that a customer will ACTUALLY benefit from a rebate offer. In Rick's case, they sent him the rebate in the form of a $10 debit card that was SUPPOSED to be good until July 2009, but when he went to a Best Buy to USE it last month, it was denied. The reason? He'd been charged a $3 "maintenance fee" every month since January. LinkWhat happened when it was all gone? Did he owe money?Quote from: computeruler on May 14, 2009, 03:25:06 PM What happened when it was all gone? Did he owe money? No, only a BANK would do that! I continue to buy products which offer rebates, but the rebate concept has lost its allure, to me. I've passed up many products which sole inducement was a rebate savings -- it's rarely worth the hassle, anymore. He had 6 months before the monthly fee kicked in. |
