Solve : First Robot Scientist Makes Gene Discovery? |
|
Answer» He can come up with a hypothesis, plan an experiment, reason about the results, and then plan his next steps. Now ADAM is the FIRST robot—but maybe not the last—to have independently discovered new scientific information, according to SCIENTISTS who recently built themselves the mechanical colleague. Link Wow, that is incredible. Imagine how great it would be to have an onboard computer AI in your computer/laptop. "Computer, can you help me with this math problem?" "Sure, please turn the webcam towards the question" LOLQuote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on April 03, 2009, 07:16:22 AM Wow, that is incredible. If that happens, we all know Broni will hack into Computeruler's Computer somehow, so when Computeruler asks, "Can you help me with this problem" "Sure.. BZZTT. INSERT GIFT CERTIFICATES" but in all SERIOUSNESS, this is a really big step in both robotics and science in general. Have computers literally design, not just manufacture, new computers; they could probably improve all SORTS of ow silly fiobled Buses with something faster that is still backward compatible. That would be neat... and then USE those to do the same. And then make a blue robot, call him Megaman X, put him in a cap... wait- no no, don't do that. |

Solve : Leaving computers on overnight = $2.8 billion a year? |
|
Answer» I'm surprised the number of people I know TRIED this. Then they start it, and can't figure out why it isn't working properly. What do they mean? Turning Computers off overnight worldwide(?) calculated is that on a on a yearly basis?Huh?My goodness there, alexK, you're just having a tizzy over this article, aren't you? Re: the above quote, did you not read the article? It said, "An estimated $2.8 billion wasted on excess energy costs each year in the U.S. alone." Quote from: alexK on March 31, 2009, 03:10:25 PM Now the next thing on the agenda of elimination is: .....COWS. Yes cows, all they do is drool, fart and belch, ALL DAY! Not only that, they breath out CARBON DIOXIDE all day. They ruin the atmosphere all day.Silly boy! I grew up on a dairy farm. Cows (the dairy type, of course) give milk. Otherwise, there would be no reason to keep them around. If you mean cows of the breeds (Angus, Hereford, etc.) used mainly for beef production, well, you see, it's takes male and females (the cows) to keep the species going so that beef can continue to be produced. Why get rid of cows? If it were not for cows, where would milk and hamburgers that we commonly see come from? You'd have to get your own source and that takes more money and energy. Cows don't just eat and belch all day, if we could get them to pull somie machinery that generates some electricity (like kind of a wind or water turbine) maybe then it would help.....Quote If it were not for cows, where would milk and hamburgers that we commonly see come from? Ask SoyBeanLOL! that's a VERY good one, Geek-9pm I leave mine on all the time, but I put it to sleep when I don't use it.Quote I leave mine on all the time, but I put it to sleep when I don't use it. Which? -your computer or your Cow? |

Solve : Close Call? |

Answer» Conficker will be a real THREAT if it actually gets into another silo. people are going to start blaming anything they can on this worm. Thats what the media does to people, like the economy, everyone is blaming it on Madoff and AIG(not that that's not bad, but there's other reasons like people get loans that they can't even pay off) |

Solve : Windows 7 RC release date inadvertantly confirmed by MS? |
Answer» Full StoryQuoteThe public RC will apparently be coming in May 2009, and not in April as previously rumored. Ohh too bad Mr. Cleo. I'm watching every post about this issue... Just so you know....heheheI THOUGHT it was possible to upgrade from windows 7 RC to windows RTM? I would like MS to TELL us a projected release date for the RTM as well but of course you want MS to work as long as they need to be sure you guys are not going to find windows 7 hard to use and not good at all windows 7 will be a retail product, so it will NOT be free. if the release candidate is free then upgrading to the RTM version will NOT be an OPTION on account of the fact that it makes purchasing the product unnecessary.I think it was that if you had RC version, then it can be upgraded to retail version but you have to buy the retail version to get all the stuff. Nobody said the upgrade was going to be free .... So you technically don't have to reformat PC or have to install some other working OS.ahhh, you mean technically possible, not automatically- ok. I can't say myself. I do know that the windows 2000 beta... sorry, the "Cairo" beta- can be "upgraded" to the fill w2k, if I remember right.Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 29, 2009, 10:53:56 PM ahhh, you mean technically possible, not automatically- ok. That's what I'm hearing MS say. Like the beta of Windows 7 CANNOT be upgraded to RTM directly so you have to reformat your PC with the official Windows 7 installer. But in any case, I am also hearing that a reformat and new OS installation may be good idea in long run That's true, but if the RC has a time limit like the Windows 2K evaluation version them the time limit might remain after upgrading.I wouldn't think so. I heard MS saying you have to either reformat OR upgrade to RTM before the expiration date of the RC. well- yeah, but with windows 2000, if you upgraded the evaluation version to professional, it would still bluescreen after 30 days with the "END_OF_EVALUATION_PERIOD" error- even THOUGH it was supposed to be upgraded fully. I imagine they'll actually test the upgrade functionality a bit more thoroughly this time around...As an MS Beta tester i can say they have said that not everyone who has the Windows 7 Beta will not be offered the RC... They plan on pruning those numbers. Of course it will get out there though. Some Beta testers will be selectively offered the Full ver. free when it is released...at least this is how they have done it in the past. That's why i submit as many bug checks as i can..... My question is: Is windows 7 better/different/worse then Vista. I'm still a XP guy... Wish they made another version of XP I think windows 7 should be an improvement over windows 7 but you gotta get used to the new taskbar if you're jumping from XP to windows 7, and I think you can upgrade directly from XP to windows 7, BYPASSING windows vista. XP wasn't a bad system internally, just it's graphics were a little too plasticy at times and the security needed beefing up since many a hackers were targeting it. . A windows XP with vista aero interface and vista's taskbar and start menu? That would be tight but compatibility is what we would want with the programs you use most often. |

Solve : Security Zone blocks FireFox downloads? |
|
Answer» The latest ver. of FireFox DLoad is BLOCKED by IE's Security Zone settings on later versions of Vista and XP... The latest ver. of FireFox DLoad is blocked by IE's Security Zone settings on later versions of Vista and XP... I wonder if IE still does it now that version 8 is already out?Interesting this is the first I've heard of this issue as well. I did LIKE one of the comments on the post. Set your IE settings to "HIGH" so if something happens to open in IE even though you've GOT Firefox set as your default browser your pretty safe. I wonder if you can set IE tab extension in firefox as default for THINGS opening in IE only?I don't believe the IE tab extension would work for the potential vulnerability that I was considering. Some programs specify to open themselves in a specific browser. So if a program was designed to itself in IE it would do it regardless of what extensions you had in Firefox. |

Solve : Conficker Hits U.K. Parliament? |
|
Answer» http://www.crn.com/security/216401148 The Conficker worm has hit yet another high profile victim. This TIME, the networks of the U.K Houses of Parliament reportedly are the latest to be incorporated in the millions of computers infected by the botnet. According to a U.K. Parliament memo, which was leaked on political block Dizzy THINKS, the widespread Conficker worm infection slowed Parliamentary computer systems and locked out several accounts. While the issue has yet to be resolved, the U.K. Parliament memo maintained that staff were working with third party partners to eradicate the Conficker worm and were going to "act swiftly to clean computers that are infected." Employees with infected computers would be contacted and the device would either be removed or cleaned with appropriate software to prevent further attacks, the advisory said. The attack precedes an impending Conficker variant, slated to be released April 1, that will allegedly deliver a malicious, but yet unknown, payload. Some security experts have speculated that the latest version will create a new update mechanism that will allow it to randomly communicate with its command and control centers to launch attacks indiscriminately. The new version of Conficker will crank up the number of domains that it can check for updates from 250 to about 50,000, while being able to dodge interception by the security community, which has thus FAR been able to impede communication between the notorious botnet and its domains. The Conficker worm has significantly evolved since its launch in October 2008. The worm originated as the result of an attack exploiting a Microsoft vulnerability in the handling of RPC requests in the Server Service. Microsoft immediately released an emergency out-of-band patch repairing the vulnerability, but the fix did little to slow the worm from rapidly spreading once it took hold. Now Conficker Version C -- the latest variant of the malware -- has the ability to spread via peer-to-peer files as well as through USB sticks. It also added defensive measures designed to evade detection and removal by disabling Windows Automatic Updates and Windows Security Center, and has proven to block access to several security vendors' Web sites and circumvent many antivirus products. Meanwhile, until the Conficker issue is resolved, the memo asked PICT users to remove all unauthorized PCS and laptops from the network and refrain from using USB sticks or other portable devices to store or transfer information. Conficker has been all over the place ... it infected my college's main network briefly, also a school nearby had their systems knocked down for weeks due to this worm. Other schools have TIGHTENED up restrictions to avoid going the same way.You have to wonder about the mentality of the losers behind this. Are they so pathetic that they have nothing better to do? These are the same kind of people that will walk through a parking lot and drag a key across a row of cars. Except, these people aren't even brave enough to vandalize someones property in person. With all these high priority targets getting hit over the last few days I've been going through each of my network computers making sure manually each of them are fully updated. Solve : Hottest tracks to cost $1.29 at ITunes starting April 7? |
|
Answer» The world's largest music store, Apple's iTunes, plans to boost the price of many hit singles and selected classic tracks to $1.29 on April 7, breaking the psychological barrier of 99 cents in what could be he first big test of how much consumers are willing to PAY to download individual songs. Link sounds LIKE more people are going to pirate stuff nowQuote from: computeruler on March 27, 2009, 03:16:46 PM sounds like more people are going to pirate stuff nowTo pirate stuff is to acquire material (through illegal methods or not) and sell copies of it. I think you mean 'sounds like more people are going to illegally download music now." really? So only selling illegal stuff is pirating?! Thanks for clearing it upActually, I appear to be wrong. It's the same term for both situations. http://www.google.com.hk/search?hl=en&q=define%3Apirating&btnG=Google+Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=[Picture Removed] YOHO Yoho a Pirate's life for me. Why Charge more though? I dont think Itunes is hurting that much are they? All big name companies are hurting right now. Only to them hurting is not increasing sales by 3% of what they were last year. Retail is a numbers based world. When the numbers don't grow then panic reigns supreme. Doesn't matter that they will be fine in the end no matter what. It does however mean that the consumer has to pay 10% more for merchandise. Computer sales are low but music sales are up... Solve : Newfangled rootkits survive hard disk wiping? |
|
Answer» http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/03/24/persistent_bios_rootkits/ Researchers have demonstrated how to create rootkits that survive hard-disk reformatting by injecting malware into the low-level system instructions of a target computer. The researchers, from Core Security TECHNOLOGIES, used the techniques to inject rootkits into two computers, one running the OpenBSD operating system and the other Windows. Because the infection lives in the computer's BIOS, or basic input/output system, it persists even after the operating system is reinstalled or a computer's hard drive is replaced. While researchers have focused on BIOS-based rootkits for at least three years, earlier techniques generally attacked specific types of BIOSes, such as those that used ACPI, or Advanced Configuration and Power Interface. The techniques demonstrated by the Core researchers work on VIRTUALLY all types of systems, they said. Of course, injecting code into the BIOS is no easy feat. It requires physical access to the machine or an exploit that hands an attacker unfettered root access. But the research, presented at last week's CanSecWest security conference by Anibal L. Sacco and Alfredo A. Ortega, does demonstrate that INFECTIONS will only become harder to spot and remove over time.So you need to flash your bios just to get rid of it?It looks like...With a person needing physical access to the computer I'm not too concerned. also don't PC's nowadays require a jumper in a certain place to allow the flash functionality?Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 26, 2009, 12:56:33 PM also don't PC's nowadays require a jumper in a certain place to allow the flash functionality? Not sure what the stats on what do and don't but I'd ACTUALLY imagine that most would not require a jumper to be moved to flash a BIOS since many users have a hard enough time simply flashing the BIOS let alone opening the computer and moving a jumper. I'd imagine there are more motherboards that have a jumper that is used to recover the BIOS if it is flashed improperly or to recover the default values.Must have been the early flash ROMs that required a jumper- ironically enough for the very same reason that it would be of benefit here- viruses. Not sure if it's implemented this way, but an ideal solution would be a ROM based bios, which cannot be changed- and is enough to allow you to boot windows. a jumper would allow switching from this ROM bios, to the Flash BIOS and back. Of course the Flash would initially be the same as the ROM, but would be upgradable. This way- at the very least, it would be far EASIER to bring the PC back to life; rather then order a new Flash chip with a BIOS on it, the user or a tech could change the jumper and boot, then flash the BIOS with a newer version again. I believe ASUS has already implemented with their Quick Boot Linux MBoards... It drops you into a Linux shell which can do most day to day quick tasks and then there is the option for a full system boot... |

Solve : MacBook and Safari Conquered Within Seconds? |
|
Answer» http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/03/20/macbook-and-safari-conquered-within-seconds/ How long does it take to hack into a fully patched MacBook computer? The security researcher, CHARLIE Miller, has again WOOED participants in the Pwn2Own 2009 competition held in conjunction with the Tenth Annual CanSecWest Conference at Vancouver. Charlie Miller SPENT just a COUPLE of seconds to hack into the MacBook computer by exploiting a security vulnerability in Apple’s Safari browser. Charlie Miller was also last year’s champion. The success of hacking into MacBook computer won Miller $10,000 in cash and the MacBook machine hacked by Miller. In the interview with Miller, Miller has highlighted that before going to the CanSecWest security conference, he has planned to hack into the MacBook computer via the Safari browser. “It took a couple of seconds. They CLICKED on the link and I took control of the machine,” Miller said moments after his accomplishment. Apple will not release the technical details of the vulnerability until a patch is ready. Goes to show that even Macs are not fully safe. |

Solve : Crackers latch onto year-old Windows vulnerability? |
|
Answer» http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/03/18/windows_token_vuln/ Hackers have created exploits against a long-standing, unpatched WINDOWS "token kidnapping" vulnerability. The appearance of attacks FOLLOWS a YEAR after security researchers Cesar Cerrudo informed Microsoft of the problem in March 2008. Microsoft acknowledged the potential issue in April and published workarounds in an advisory. A more comprehensive fix is yet to appear. The privilege escalation flaw exposed by the vulnerability is subtle and not easily exploitable, so Microsoft can arguably be forgiven for treating the security bug as less than critical and not rushing out a fix. That rationale becomes redundant, HOWEVER, once a flaw gets used in attacking real systems, as in this case. Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, and Server 2003 and 2008 systems are all potentially vulnerable. Cerrudo followed up his initial March advisory with the publication of proof of concept code in October, a move that would normally stir the software giant into producing a patch, though not in this case. More recently hackers begun taking advantage of the vulnerability in attempts to pry open vulnerable systems. The flaw has cropped up in blended (multi-stage) attacks, the SANS Institute's Internet Storm Centre reports. ISC handler Bojan Zdrnja describes the case as an incident where web APPLICATION security, Microsoft, and the anti-virus vendors have all played a stinker. Other security watchers are more inclined to blame Redmond. "This is yet another example of a black-eye that Microsoft could have avoided. To repeat, the company had notice about this issue one year ago and despite evidence of proof-of-concept code, there is no patch for affected Windows users," writes security blogger Ryan Naraine, who doubles up as a security evangelist at Kaspersky LabI hope it doesnt happen to me. Anything I can do to prevent it?Yes. Send me some gift certificates, and I'll tel you Its not worth itOh well |

The end.My math was different I have 3600 songs at 130vbr some at 128 and it takes up 10gb. i got 40,000 songs as TAKING 108 57600 of those vbr songs could fit in 160GB. Solve : Quick Start Computers - 30 sec, or less? |

Answer» http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/26/technology/26boot.html?bl&ex=1225252800&en=93aa3abbed1ce92e&ei=5087%0A SAN FRANCISCO — It is the black hole of the digital age — the three minutes it can take for your computer to boot up, when there is nothing to do but wait, and wait, and wait some more before you can log on and begin multitasking at hyper-speed. Some people stare at their screen and fidget. Others pace or grab a cup of coffee. “Half the time, I go brush my teeth,” said Monica Loos, 40, who is starting a business selling stationery online from her home in San Francisco. Now the computer industry says it wants to give back some of those precious seconds. In coming months, the world’s major PC makers plan to introduce a new generation of quick-start computers, spotting a marketing opportunity in society’s short attention span. “It’s ridiculous to ask people to wait a couple of minutes,” said Sergei Krupenin, executive director of marketing of DeviceVM, a company that makes a quick-boot program for PC makers. “People want instant-on.” Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Lenovo are rolling out machines that give people access to basic functions like e-mail and a Web browser in 30 seconds or less. Asus, a Taiwanese company that is the world’s largest maker of the circuit boards at the center of every PC, has begun building faster-booting software into its entire product line. Even Microsoft, whose bloated Windows software is often BLAMED for sluggish start times, has pledged to do its part in the next version of the operating system, saying on a company blog that “a very good system is one that boots in under 15 seconds.” Today only 35 percent of machines running the latest version of Windows, called Vista, boot in 30 seconds or less, the blog notes. (Apple Macintoshes tend to boot more quickly than comparable Windows machines but still feel glacially slow to most users.) There is nothing new about frustration with start-up times, which can be many minutes. But the agitation seems more intense than in the pre-Internet days. Back then, people felt less urgency to log on to their solitary, unconnected machines. Now the destination is the vast world of the Web, and the computer industry says the fast-boot SYSTEMS cater to an information-addicted society that is agitated by even a moment of downtime. Yet it is a condition that the technology industry — with smartphones and other always-on gadgets — helped CREATE, said Gary Small, a professor at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at the University of California, Los Angeles. “Our brains have become impatient with the boot-up process,” Dr. Small said. “We have been spoiled by the hand-held devices.” PC makers are not merely out to ease our data anxieties with the new machines. They want to help themselves, too. The industry has grown so competitive, and profit margins so thin, that each company is looking for any advantage it can trumpet. Computer makers say the battle for boot-up bragging rights could resemble the auto industry’s race to shave tenths of a second from the time it takes a car to go from 0 to 60 miles an hour. Hewlett-Packard research shows that when boot times exceed more than a few minutes, users have an exaggerated sense of the time it takes. Four or five minutes can feel like an eternity. In June, H.P. introduced a new kind of fast-booting laptop, for $1,200, and the company says the technology is destined to spread quickly. Right now, H.P.’s goal is to offer PCs that boot in 30 to 45 seconds, said Philip McKinney, chief technology officer for the company’s personal systems group. “In 18 months, you’ve got to be 20 to 30 seconds.” Until Microsoft comes up with a way to greatly shorten the time it takes to load Windows, PC makers are speeding up boot times using programs that bypass Windows. The systems vary technically, but they all rely on a version of an operating system called Linux that gives users quick access to Web browsing and other basic functions of their computer. In some cases, Windows never boots, while in others, Windows starts in the background. DeviceVM, the maker of a fast-boot program called Splashtop, says it charges PC makers $1 to $2 a machine for its software. The company hopes to make more revenue over the long term by charging other software providers that want to include their applications in the menu of programs accessible without a full boot. Of course, some computer users try to avoid slow boot times by never turning off their machines; they simply leave them in standby mode. But PCs sometimes have a hard time waking up from standby and tend to crash the longer they run without rebooting. Leaving a machine on also wastes electricity and, for laptops, can drain the battery. Victor Dailey, 54, a computer engineer from San Diego who WORKS at NASA, has an alternative prescription for boot-up anxiety: “I’ll do the cigarettes and a cup of coffee while I wait.” But he would much rather skip the caffeine and nicotine and get his fix from his computer. “If you could just open it up immediately, just like you do with your cellphone, and text somebody or whatever and close it back up, that would be ideal,” he said.ASUS was ready to ship some boards that ran DSL (*censored* Small Linux ) with full connectivity browsing and word-processing immediately on startup while your OS of choice is crawling along to start....That was the last i heard of it. About 9 months ago. There is an interesting video on the above page. Two identical laptops, side-by-side. One with plain Vista, and the second one with Vista+Splashtop. Pretty impressive.my "new" XP machine boots in less then a minute.... I think the issue here is simply start-up program bloat. On the other hand, my OLDER machine takes almost 5 minutes to get to the logon screen with 98, (lol, most of that time is counting it's 512MB of RAM...)I've seen machines boot in around 30 seconds, but they're big RAM and solid state drives. FBIm at 36 seconds on the XP drive and about 71 on the Vista which has yet to be fine-tuned...Asus Expressgate is what you're referring to, patio. It's a version of Linux called Splashtop. Mostly positive reviews, anyway. I don't see what the fuss is about with boot times, if it takes too long go and make some coffee.Quote if it takes too long go and make some coffee. My 3 year old Shuttle ST62K boots Windows XP SP3 in around 40 seconds. What's the working definition of boot time here? The time from pressing the power button on the pc until when? The desktop is loaded? Until Windows prompts for a username and password? I require the paradigm be expressly described! Seems to be the time from hitting the power button to being able to launch an application such as a web browser. Just reading between the lines anyway and taking some hints from the first post. That's how I'd define boot time too, from hitting the power to the computer actually being usable for something you want - that's as opposed to displaying the background, log in box, or hourglass. It would be nice if one of these PC manufacturers would define "boot time" since they tell us they are working to reduce it. |

Solve : AVG newest problems...? |

Answer» AVG antivirus is causing patching headaches http://windowssecrets.com/links/$P20d/23f56eh/?url=WindowsSecrets.com%2F2008%2F10%2F30%2Fts%2F%3Fn%3Dstory7 As if we didn't have enough patching emergencies to deal with this WEEK, a recent UPDATE of AVG's antivirus software knocked out some people's Internet connection. AVG's support page indicates that after upgrading to AVG version 8.0.196, your network link may fail. If rebooting your PC doesn't fix the problem, follow the instructions on AVG's support page to download the fixfiles.zip FILE to your computer. Double-click the .zip file to open it, and then double-click fixfiles.exe in the resulting folder to run the utility. If the glitch persists, the company recommends that you run a repair installation of your AVG app. If reinstalling your antivirus software doesn't get you back online, AVG advises that you contact the company's support desk for further instructions. I became aware of the AVG update glitch when the program began to INTERFERE with the collection and distribution of e-mail on my Small Business Server 2003 test system. Is 8.0.196 a Beta version? They are only on version 8.0.175.I don't USE AVG, but this is what AVG support page says: http://www.avg.com/support#tba1 Quote In case that some components are inactive or you are experiencing blocked internet connection after the AVG 8.0.196 program update........Found it. 8.0.196 is the current Pro version. 8.0.175 is the current free version. |

Solve : Happy Birthday, Windows. Well, sorta? |
|
Answer» http://snipr.com/5dvdd Monday marked 25 years since the unveiling of Windows 1.0 -- the official beginning of the PC operating system that has come to DEFINE Microsoft's business. However, as Wired and Gizmodo note, calling it a birthday might be a bit of a stretch. Foreshadowing long development cycles to come, the company didn't release Windows 1.0 for another two years after the announcement. And true to form, the franchise didn't really start to gain traction until the release of Windows 3.0 in May 1990. At the above page, there are two videos to MARK the occasion, whatever your opinion of the significance. In first one, presumably an internal Microsoft spoof, now-CEO Steve Ballmer makes an infomercial-style sales pitch for Windows 1.0.
