Solve : YouTube: Why the Flash era isn't over?

Answer»

Google is among the biggest proponents of a collection of Web technologies that reproduce many important features of Adobe Systems' Flash, but it's not yet time for regime change at YouTube.

One of the most important parts of the upcoming HTML5 standard is support for video that can be built directly into Web page without requiring a plug-in such as Flash Player. Other open standards such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for formatting, Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), and Web Open Font Format (WOFF) for typography can mimic Flash features, but Flash's ability to deliver streaming video to multiple browsers is one of the main reasons it's got such a STRONG INCUMBENT advantage.

Solve : Microsoft by the numbers?

Answer»

You probably saw the news this WEEK that we’ve sold 150 MILLION Windows 7 licenses in 8 MONTHS. That's more than 600,000 per day. And, perhaps fittingly for a PRODUCT called Windows 7, it adds up to 7 copies every second of every day since launch.

As a communications guy, I’m generally most comfortable with WORDS. But since Microsoft is a pretty numbers-driven company, the Windows 7 milestone got me thinking about some *other* numbers, too.

Solve : Warrantless cell phone tracking?

Justice DEPT. defends warrantless cell phone tracking.
In a novel privacy case, Obama administration tells an appeals court that police should be able to learn the locations of mobile devices WITHOUT a search warrant.
More of the story:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-10453214-38.html?tag=newsLeadStoriesArea.1

Seems like to me too much abuse would come from this if they were to allow warrentless cell phone tracking.Yes, I posted this topic here because it has an impact on anybody using a mobile computer, such as an iPhone. So they could monitor not just your cell phone activity but your computer activity. There are cases where warrants would hinder law enforcement so it's a two edged sword.

Think of where tracing a cell phone brought someone home alive rather than dead. Red tape might make stories like that impossible.Excellent point !
Still 2 edges however...
There really is no good answer.Actually, they do have to get a court order, it's just not called a search warrant, so there are some protections.

Solve : Windows 8 Plans Leaked: Numerous Details Revealed?

Interesting post about where Microsoft *could* be going on Windows 8.

A big thanks to @floo1989 for the heads-up! Over the weekend, the Italian Windows site “Windowsette” got a hold of some SUPER secret SQUIRREL Microsoft presentations apparently laying around on the internet somewhere. I took a look through every single one of these, slide-by-slide, so I’m quite confident these are the REAL deal. Solve : Mozilla Removes Two Malicious Firefox Add-Ons?

Answer»

Mozilla on Friday said that it had removed two FIREFOX add-ons from its Web site because they installed malware.

"Two add-ons in the experimental section of addons.mozilla.org were found to be containing malware," Mozilla said on its security blog. "These were not originally DETECTED with the anti-malware scanning tools that we have been using. We have since increased the number of scanning tools, and will be taking ADDITIONAL steps to minimize the risk of further incidents."

Quote

The malicious add-ons have been identified as version 4.0 of Sothink Web Video Downloader and all versions of Master Filer. According to AMO's blog post, Sothink Web Video Downloader 4.0 included malware known as Win32.LdPinch.gen, while Master Filer included malware known as Win32.Bifrose.32.Bifrose Trojan.

LinkJust another take on why a few yo-yo's can spoil a good thing...
Individuals have been responsible for DEVELOPMENT of most FireFox addons and themes...
Now Mozilla has to police what was once an open community of contributors.

Quote
Last week, we disclosed two instances of suspected malware in experimental add-ons on AMO. Since that DISCLOSURE, we’ve worked with security experts and add-on developers to determine that the suspected trojan in Version 4.0 of Sothink Video Downloader was a false positive and the extension does not include malware. The same investigation also confirmed that the Master Filer extension included a valid instance of a trojan. Our estimate of 6,000 affected downloads has been revised to under 700. The Sothink Video Downloader has been re-enabled on AMO. We apologize to our users and the developers of Sothink for any inconvenience this has caused.

Solve : Microsoft SideWinder X4 keyboard takes the ghost out of gaming?

Answer»
We've seen higher-end gaming keyboards from both Logitech and Razer that claim to have solved the ghosting problem. Some more affordable keyboards even boast "selective anti-ghosting" on the WASD KEYS that many PC gamers use. Microsoft's new SideWinder X4 gaming keyboard may be the first to offer all-key anti-ghosting at an affordable price.

Ghosting, if you're unfamiliar, is the tendency for STANDARD keyboards to lose TRACK of key presses when you're already holding down another key. For gamers that PERFORM lots of keyboard finger gymnastics, ghosting can be a problem. Previous solutions from Razer and Logitech have allowed between five and ten simultaneous key presses. The TECHNOLOGY behind Microsoft's new SideWinder X4 allows you to press up to 26 keys at the same time.

Dell: 5% Margins For Consumer PC Business Is Sustainable
JUNE 24, 2010 Wall Street Journal

Hard to believe.
At FIVE per cent a lot of companies are going to DROP out.
And if that is true, what is the point of fever building your own computer? As companies quit we will see a lot of PCs stuff show up in the over stock market below the coast of the PARTS if bought individually. While 5% profit margins doesn't sound like much, my limited understanding of the grocery business is that that operate on about half that much.According to http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=204979:

"According to their retail profiles for "grocery and beverage stores"
any store in the $15-$20 million range, the gross margins are 25.6%
(net margins are 6%)."

The article about Dell is REFERRING to net margin. So, they're slightly below grocery and beverage stores.

Solve : The future of laptops!?

I think this is crazy, after hearing all the talk about the Ipad and all these new Tablet pcs coming out, I think this concept will beat them all, most likely it will be another Apple PRODUCT, but none-the-less this concept just looks great. The idea of having two touch screens that can do just about anything sounds like a fantastic gadget that even James BOND would want to have. Drop a comment and let everyone know what you think of it. Solve : Quantum Computer a Stage Closer With Silicon Breakthrough?

Answer»

Quote

The remarkable ability of an electron to exist in two places at once has been controlled in the most COMMON electronic material -- silicon -- for the first time.

"In our case we used a far-infrared, very short, high intensity pulse from the Dutch FELIX laser to put an electron orbiting within silicon into two states at once -- a so-called quantum superposition state. We then demonstrated that the superposition state could be controlled so that the electrons emit a burst of light at a well-defined time after the superposition was created. The burst of light is called a photon echo; and its observation proved we have full control over the quantum state of the atoms."

the reference to Schrodinger's cat isn't entirely accurate.

In what way?

The cat isn't dead and alive at the same time. It's status in the box is unknown. The act of opening the box changes the status of the cat.

The analogy to an electron was that when you ATTEMPT to measure an electron you alter it's state so you don't get an accurate picture of it.Call me old-fashioned if you like, but I have always supposed that the Copenhagen interpretation says that the cat exists in a superposition of states ("decayed nucleus/dead cat" and "undecayed nucleus/living cat") until an observation takes place. Then the wave function collapses into one of the two states. However Everett, who I am sure you are familar with, says that no collapse takes place. There are various other interpretations that I shall not go into here. It seems clear that there is no single "correct" interpretation of the Schrodinger thought experiment. So your rather definite STATEMENT intrigues me.

Solve : Firefox update brings protection from Flash crashes?

Answer»

Mozilla is rolling out an update of its Firefox Web browser that adds support for plugin isolation. Version 3.6.4, which INCLUDES the new feature, was officially released on Tuesday and will be deployed soon through the browser's automated update system.

It is unusual for Mozilla to DEPLOY a major new feature in a minor POINT update, but the plugin isolation CAPABILITY is a worthy exception to the RULE, since it will significantly improve the browser's stability. In the new version of Firefox, plugin components like Flash and Silverlight will run in external processes. When these plugins crash, the browser itself will not be terminated.

Solve : Samsung Surpasses HP As Biggest Tech Co.?

"Samsung said, however, that sales on a consolidated basis - which includes the performance of its overseas and domestic subsidiaries excluding financial businesses - REACHED a record 136.29 trillion won or nearly $118 billion at Friday's exchange rate.

That places Samsung slightly above Hewlett-Packard Co. ( HPQ - news - people ), which in November reported sales for fiscal year 2009 ended Oct. 31 of $114.6 billion. The Samsung Group is composed of numerous international affiliated businesses, most of them united under the Samsung brand INCLUDING Samsung Electronics, the world's largest electronics company,[5][6][7] Samsung Heavy Industries, the world's second largest shipbuilder[8] and Samsung C&T, a major global construction company.

Samsung has been the world's most popular consumer electronics brand since 2005 and is the best known South Korean brand in the world.[9] Samsung Group ACCOUNTS for more than 20% of South Korea's total exports[10] and is the leader in many domestic industries, such as the financial, chemical, retail and entertainment industries. My company is a KVM switches manufacturer. I don't know if I can post my company's press release regarding new products and applications in this FORUM ?

Thank you for your advise. No.
But if any company has something big and it hits the mainstream media it wail likely be noticed here.
Personally, I don't see how a new KM switch could make news.

May a new blue tooth KM device that lets five users use one PC all at the same time? With the new hi end QUAD core CPUS that would be a cool idea. Could reduce software licensing costs for office use.

Do you have anything LIKE that?

Do media OWNERSHIP limits make sense?
By JOELLE TESSLER, AP Technology Writer Joelle Tessler, Ap Technology Writer –June 21, 2010
WASHINGTON – Even the news industry's free fall probably will not be enough to wipe out complicated federal RULES designed to restrain the power of media companies.
For decades, the Federal Communications Commission has imposed strict limits preventing any company from controlling too many media properties in the same market. These limits were established to ensure that communities have choices of newspapers and local TV and radio stations.
Read the story
It now extends into the Internet and how we use our computers.
Full Story:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100621/ap_on_hi_te/us_fcc_media_ownership_rules
If carried to the logical extreme, it would mean the Microsoft would have to divide up its dominant position in the Desktop market with Apple and Linux.
Many years ago media ownership limits made sense. Back in the 60's most cities had three or four TV stations, and most people used antennas for reception, and one newspaper. Today almost everyone has either cable or satellite with hundreds of channels.

If newspapers are going to survive, which I hope they do (even though I seldom read them anymore), they are going to need to partner with other media to share costs.

When TV first started up, it was predicted it would kill both the radio and movie industry, both of which are alive and well today. The Internet and newspapers are a different story. News online range from CNN, MSNBC, Foxnews, and numerous fringe's sources. Classified ADS were one of newspapers most profitable sections, and with EBay and Craigslist a lot of that source of revenue is gone for newspapers.

When Apple released OS X 10.6.4 on Tuesday, the company said it addressed certain COMPATIBILITY issues with VPN connections and other things, but failed to mention anything about adding an anti-malware update.

But buried in the code is an update to the XProtect.plist file, which contains signatures of malware written to target the Mac. The signatures now detect malware dubbed "HellRTS," Graham Clulely of Sophos wrote in a blog post.

Here: Hacker puts porn clip on Moscow video billboard

Quote
Someone HACKED into a 3Stars outdoor advertising screen on the Garden Ring road in Moscow about midnight last Thursday and ran a two-minute hardcore video clip.

The showing CAUSED a massive traffic jam but city officials said the good news was that there were no traffic accidents.

3Stars commercial director Viktor Laptev said "There was a hacker attack as a result of which a commercial was replaced with an obscene video in the control computer. It is unclear whether it was an act of HOOLIGANISM or competitors' intrigues."

The Moscow city advertising committee will investigate.

Windows 7 SP1 coming this SUMMER?
Word on the street is that Microsoft is hard at WORK on Windows 7 Service Pack 1. And while that's just a rumor for now, I'd be kind of surprised if it wasn't true. After all, Microsoft has a long history of putting out service packs that bundle together all of the incremental updates for each of its operating systems. Usually a service pack also includes a few new features. Here are a a few of things that Windows 7 SP 1 might include:

* All of the Windows updates that have been released so far
* Support for USB 3.0 and other new hardware
* Umm, that's about it

I've got GOOD news and bad news for those of the misguided PERCEPTION that LINUX is somehow impervious to attack or compromise. The bad news is that it turns out a VAST collection of Linux systems may, in fact, be pwned. The good news, at least for IT ADMINISTRATORS and organizations that rely on Linux as a server or desktop operating system, is that the Trojan is in a download that should have no bearing on Linux in a business setting.

Like Windows Vista, Windows 7 allows for scheduled defragmentation JOBS. In fact, defragmentation is automatically scheduled by default, which means that most users will never have to adjust any settings in order to OPTIMIZE disk performance. WELL, assuming you don't turn off your computer at night, anyway. By default, the defragmenter is set to run at 1:00AM.

You may want to let your PC stay up late.I don't believe that's true. I have not seen anything in scheduled tasks for defrag, unless PD cancels "unschedules" it when it's installed. This would be separate from Superfetch's OPTIMIZATION.

Microsoft recommends that customers install the update as soon as possible or update to the latest version of the web browser for "improved security".

The patch - MS10-002 - was released worldwide at 1000 PST (1800 GMT).

"It ADDRESSES the vulnerability related to recent attacks against Google and small subset of corporations, as well as several other vulnerabilities," the firm said.

This morning, AROUND 8 a.m. EST, I received a notice on my computer screen that Avast had surpassed 100,000,000 users. I don't SEE this on their website yet. I PRESUME it will be announced there soon. They were having a promotional campaign. Per http://www.avast.com/eng/news.html:

"avast! Free Antivirus, the world’s most popular antivirus software, is planning a special surprise for its 100,000,000th user.

The lucky PERSON will get much more than a confirmation email after registering their copy of avast! Free Antivirus. He or she will get an all expenses-paid trip to Prague – the historic capital of the Czech Republic and home to ALWIL Software, makers of the avast! antivirus programs."

So, apparently some very recent NEW user was the lucky person to win an all expenses-paid trip to Prague. I imagine we'll be seeing more news releases on this soon.with that 100M users I just wish I am the winner hehe!
I love avast, its doing its function very well. I tend to regard e-mails saying "You have won X, congratulations!" as Spam... i sure hope the lucky sod isnt like me Do U Think its Real

Solve : Woman Sues Google over Bad Directions Update: It Was Dark?

Answer»

Search Engine Land, the news and information site that broke the story about how Lauren Rosenberg was struck by a VEHICLE and is now suing Google, has an UPDATE to the story: it was dark outside, and Google maps instructed her to walk across the street.

Search Engine Land's Danny Sullivan spoke with the lead attorney on Rosenberg's case on Tuesday. According to attorney Allen K. Young of Provo, Utah, law firm Young, Kester & Petro, "It was six in the morning. It was not a busy street [then]. She believed there was a sidewalk on the other side."

Apparently, Google Maps directed Rosenberg to cross the street, and she figured it was leading her to a sidewalk. Young says that it was dark outside, and there were no street lights, and Rosenberg had never been in the area before, so she was relying on Google to know where the sidewalks were at. She was, in fact, struck by Patrick Harwood's vehicle when she attempted to cross the street. There was no crosswalk.

Linkobviously google maps should have said "cross the road. Be sure to look both ways to ensure that you will not be struck by an oncoming vehicle. Additionally, ensure that if you need to run, that you are not holding scissors. Keep a Geiger counter handy to ensure that there isn't a deposit of radioactive materials stored in a below ground evil genius warehouse that google maps wasn't aware of."

It's utterly ridiculous. I travel almost every night when it's pitch dark through some areas that have no streetlights. First off: after a minute or so, your eyes ADJUST, even if you only have starlight. On the other hand, if your walking down the street continuously staring at a cellphone or something to try to "guide" you then your eyes never adjust. And in either case, you shouldn't be looking at some guide, you should be paying attention to were you're going. It doesn't matter how dark it is outside, unless your an ignorant fool following directions blindly your going to make some conscious observations about the surrounding environment, this includes such seemingly irrelevant things as those headlights coming TOWARDS you, as well as wether it's a crosswalk. If you're going to be so trusting of something that should supplement your own observations, not replace them, then you may as well be blind and deaf*, since you're ignoring those senses anyway.

*and possibly smell and taste as well. I hope you're happy lady. Instead if tasting a cheeseburger, pizza, ice cream, or anything, instead you should look it up and find out what it's SUPPOSED to taste like. far less effort.I guess it's a good thing that Google maps didn't tell her to jump off a cliff.

Frankly, someone should sue Lauren for being stupid. They would have more of a chance of winning that suit than she has against Google.lol, only in the free land of America where everyone can sue anything!

My favour is still this one: A criminal fell through a glass house roof which broke when trying to break into an old ladies home climbing up to the air vent. He sued the old lady and actually won the case.Quote from: Azzaboi on June 04, 2010, 04:17:02 PM

Solve : Do you know your internet connection speeds??

Answer»

From Fierce Telcom.

Quote

Do you know how fast your broadband speed is? Well, if your answer was no, you're not ALONE. According to an FCC survey, 80 percent of U.S. broadband USERS don't know how fast their connection is either.

In an effort to keep broadband PROVIDERS honest, the agency through its broadband speed initiative plans to compare the speeds consumers get against what broadband providers actually advertise.

One of the other takeaways from the survey was customer satisfaction. The survey revealed that while 91 percent of the survey respondents said they were "very" or "somewhat" satisfied with their wireline broadband service, only 71 percent were happy with their mobile broadband service.

To better understand what actual broadband speeds consumers are GETTING in their homes and wireless devices, the FCC has asked for 10,000 volunteers to participate in a scientific study to measure home broadband speeds. This study will become the foundation for the FCC's "STATE of Broadband" report later this year.

Solve : How your office copier is spying on you in an unbelievable way?

Answer»

This is an amazing, unbelievable – some would say shocking – revelation. Office copying machines CONTAIN hard disks that store an image of every page copied by the copier. The material is not encrypted, so if a burglar, corporate spy or identity theft ring gets hold of the copier’s hard disk, they can access a treasure trove of personal information about employees and clients. They can also access company financial information, trade secrets, pay checks… anything put on the copier is stored.

Quote
At issue are the hard drives embedded in most copiers and intelligent printers manufactured in the past five years.
Now it is eight years. All home printers use a watermark that is not easily seen. They say it is to fight counterfeiters but it could also identify you in other scenarios.

Quote
Yet there are no laws to stop the Secret Service from using printer codes to secretly trace the origin of non-currency documents; only the privacy policy of your printer manufacturer currently protects you (if indeed such a policy EXISTS). And no law REGULATES what sort of documents the Secret Service or any other domestic or foreign government agency is permitted to request for identification, not to mention how such a forensics tool could be developed and implemented in printers in the first place.

Full story: Is Your Printer Spying On You?I would guess that hard drives started showing up in copiers when they became combination copier and network printer.

If there was a user that was copying a big document and several other users sending jobs to the printer at the same time, it became cheaper to put in a hard drive than to add enough memory for all the jobs.

I imagine the software controlling the hard drive is either proprietary or Linux.

A simple fix would be to put a erase or delete button on the machine. As soon as I read the article, I sent an email to my principal about it. FUNNY thing, he just went to some privacy security info-thing at the school board office that day and learned about the exact same thing. Quote from: rthompson80819 on May 29, 2010, 06:11:52 PM

actually they do have that option INSTALLED but it must be accessed from the panel on the device. The sanitation renders the device unusable during the wipe process (DOD if you have requirements for the number of passes). That means if the device dies there is no way to wipe the device without removing the HDD. This will void the warranty on the printer so it is not advised. If the device has a HDD then you can more than likely get a certificate of destruction from the vendor if you are concerned about data security.

Solve : Dude uploads video to YouTube, rips it, uploads again a thous...?

Pretty fascinating. Didn't think that the compression would cause that much of an issue, even at 1,000 times.

What happens when you upload a video to YouTube, then rip it from YouTube, and repeat that process again, a thousand times. The final digitally-distilled product bears little resemblance to the original, and becomes something of its own.

My Computer Science teacher did something similar with a Visual Basic program saving and loading the same jpeg over and over.

Fun to play with... I played around with Imagemagick's command line converter, convert.exe. Two things govern the degradation: the number of conversions, and the compression (quality) setting. I found that with 80% quality even 1000 cycles didn't do much; on the other hand if I chose 1% (very severe compression) quality, the changes happen more quickly. There COMES a POINT where the image settles down and doesn't degrade much more as you can SEE...

Original

System specs Shuttle SN78SH7, 4 GB DDR2 RAM, 3.0 GHz AMD Phenom II 945 (quad core), Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, images stored on a USB 2.0 external hard drive, converted with ImageMagick 6.6.2-2, image size 401x433, 24 bit colour.

Converted 10 times at 1% quality setting (0.61 seconds)

Solve : Old computers rejuvenated with SSD upgrades?

Answer»
SSDs are usually used in expensive computers like the Ars God Box and the MacBook Air, but SSD vendor RunCore's CES display points out that they can revitalize older computers as well. SEVERAL older computers were demoed sporting shiny new SSDs and running Windows 7 like champions. And maybe, some time this decade, that upgrade strategy MIGHT become cost-effective.

LinkWow, this will be good news to those with older PCs, no more having to constantly upgrade

Well until the SSD started to peter out

Although the different technologies used with SSDs vary with Pros and Cons, For Example:
  • NAND-Based SSDs USE no capacitors they run on a circuit arragned in a Flip Flop manner where apply voltage to one input and it Sets the Output(1) or apply it to the other input and it Resets the Output(0), of course this would be constantly updated like a RAM chip.
  • Flash Based SSDs are reliable and fast as well as no constant updating. but aren't the superman of the bunch.
  • FRAM(Ferro-Electric RAM) are just recently DEVELOPED that operate like RAM(in the SPEED and simplicity) but with out the battery backup and constant updating, these also have a longer life span than Flash(the designers claim that it could never peter out). So far these are fairly expensive and can store less amount of data than a Flash chip of relative size.
