Solve : E-mail leak has Google threatening to leave China?

Answer»

Quote from: Helpmeh on January 17, 2010, 08:07:14 AM

Some sources say Google has only INDEXED about 0.03% of the Internet.

I thought they said that the sum of all engines had indexed that figure; in 2003 the head of Google estimated they had indexed about 0.004%.

This Google search (essentially, "find me any page")

or | -or +*

returns around 25 billion results.

Ryan Levering and Michal Cutler at Binghamton University estimated the average web page size at around 130 K. So we get a figure of around 130K x 25,000,000,000 = 3 petabytes (in round NUMBERS) which might hide around 1.5 or more exabytes of unindexed data.

This website gives an idea of some methods used to estimate the size of the Web.

"Hmm" is a sound many people WOULD make during moments of otherwise quite contemplation. the visual aid would often be the stroking of ones beard or moustache. In this case, Calum is saying that he finds the concept of an announcement for an announcement of a product somewhat curious. It is a very, very LARGE drive.

I'm not impressed with the device...nor the numbers.

neither am I, just saying apparently some misguided souls FEEL it useful.

Although I suspect it's more akin to the "usefulness" of an ipod- I mean, you can get any old MP3 player, but people seem to have it in their heads that the only MP3 player "worth getting" is the ipod. Although you have to hand it to apple, considering that the ipod requires custom software, only handles a few file types, and has a non-replacable battery AND still has a higher price tag then equivalent players that are better in all the useful senses of the word, the fact that they can keep the "cool" factor despite it's obvious shortcomings is nothing short of a testament to how it's not useful for it's function but rather for it's form. Much like a golden toilet.

Same is true of the iPhone, despite it's clear shortcomings and never-ending problems (the same sort of problems the early cellphone when you practically needed to drag trailer behind your car to go "mobile" that were resolved long ago by the more established and experienced cellphone companies) it's still MANAGED to become "the" cellphone to have.

it's more a testament to the marketing zeal of Apple then their ability to create a quality product. I mean, come on- the first iMac didn't even have a floppy drive. This was 1998. You pretty much needed one. people say it "was AHEAD of it's time" MAYBE. Too bad they didn't create flash drives ahead of their time, as well.

2 million of those people have bought an iPad...out of how many people that could purchase one? i am willing to bet over 10million people have the stuff to get one, they just don't want it.

Apples products seem to be based a lot on hype. The Mac vs PC adverts I found to be quite distasteful for their type.A guy in my office has an iPad and when I compared it to my iPhone I see no justification in getting the iPad unless you have really bad eyesight and need the larger screen.

This year, at Google IO, there are still battles to be fought, mainly against Apple. Gundotra proclaimed the importance of providing "a free operating system that would enable innovation at every level of the stack."

Sounds promising. I still think in the end having an open system will always win.

They mentioned the ability of Flash, I would like to see Flash demonstrated on a phone running Froyo since I've seen a few phones that are capable of running Flash but it's not same TYPE of Flash experience you get with a PC since you're good hardware acceleration (can get stuttering video or slow video) . Also would be interesting to see them demonstrate each of the things STEVE Jobs claimed about Flash, e.g. if running Flash videos would dramatically decrease the BATTERY life.Stumbled across a well done video of Flash in action. Granted it's a beta version. Looks PRETTY good but is definitely buggy.

Solve : Google dumps Microsfot??

Okay. Time for another poll. This time there is no obvious right answer. UNLESS you say so. Microsoft and Google are in another squabble and one accuses the other of doing something that's not very good. Have you heard this before? This time it's about security. Fine, all of us are interested in security.
It goes something like this. Google is going to stop using something made by Microsoft. They say it's no longer secure. Now Microsoft comes back and defends itself about the security issue. So who is more credible? If Microsoft's product is not secure, whose is? Are we to believe that Google is really going to help us all keep our computers more safe? Here are the two stories that are in the news this week.

Solve : How to foil Web browser 'tabnapping'?

Answer»

A new, incredibly sneaky identity-theft tactic SURFACED earlier this week when Mozilla's Aza Raskin, the creative lead of Firefox, unveiled what's become known as "tabnapping."

Stated simply, tabnapping -- from the combination of "tab" and "kidnapping" -- could be used by clever phishers to dupe users into giving up passwords by secretly changing already-open browser tabs. All of the MAJOR browsers on Windows and MAC OS X are vulnerable to the attack.

Because most people keep multiple tabs open, OFTEN for long periods, and because they trust that the contents and label of a tab are immutable, tabnapping could become the next big thing in identity theft.

LinkNobody is actually doing this in the wild. A proof-of-concept has been demonstrated by some Mozilla people. From TFA:

Quote

Tabnapping isn't in ACTIVE circulation at the moment

In Firefox, NoScript is believed to be an effective defence, if it ever gets widespread.

Monday night, Microsoft announced that it had removed the offending feature as it investigated the charges, and now, Microsoft has admitted that the code was indeed lifted from Plurk.

Tut tut tut...Microsoft, you need to respect intellectual property...

It isn't the first time they have been caught!

Any user of XP, check this one out.

Navigate to "C:\Windows\Help\Tours\WindowsMediaPlayer\Audio\Wav".

Located there are exactly nine WAV files, with a size between 80 and 360 Kilobytes. They serve as background sound during the Windows Media Player Tour. When you open one of these files with the notepad, (right click, open with, choose program, notepad) you at first only see scrambled letters. Of course, you think, it's a sound file, after all.

But things become interesting when you scroll down to the very bottom in notepad. Located there is a type of watermarking, which records the software that the Microsoft musician used to create the WAV files.

At the bottom, you will find something like this:
LISTB INFOICRD 2000-04-06 IENG Deepz0ne ISFT Sound Forge 4.5

At first, that sounds anything but spectacular. It seems as if the Microsoft musician or the freelance musician commissioned by Microsoft used the Sony-made software " Sound Forge " (formerly Sonic) in its 4.5 version. Sound Forge is a tool for professionals and enables users to create WAV, AIFF, MP3 and other music files priced at $400.

On its face, all that's not unusual: Microsoft uses professional software. Who would've thought? But wait a minute, who or what is "DeepzOne"?

DeepzOne is (or at least was) member of the Warez group Radium that had SPECIALIZED on cracking music software. Along with a person using the alias "Sandor," he was also co-founder of this group, which was established in 1997( see in this interview ). In addition, it was DeepzOne who started circulating the cracked 4.5 version of Sound Forge a few years ago.

I don't think MS ever released a report on this either. That's really cool. Quote
Any user of XP,

the "tours" folder doesn't exist for me. (yes, it is an XP machine, despite what my specs state (those are for my main desktop).

Anyway, what does that have to do with Microsoft? Microsoft paid a professional sound foundry to create the sounds for most of their programs, games, and so forth. I doubt they audit every single third-party and the software they use.

What about the Vista Wallpapers? Was one of those perhaps created in a pirated version of photoshop? Dear gawd! Microsoft, how could you!

First: Every national Microsoft is run in the country.... Microsoft China is run in, well, CHina, obviously.

So- who works there? Chinese people. Duh.

I originally tried that. I manually followed the path using cmd when that failed.
"The System cannot find the path specified" is the error when I try to "cd tours" while in the help folder; the tours folder simply doesn't exist.

While it may be true MS did not make the files themselves, I know a lot of people that absolutely hate piracy. They avoid it and get very upset if they know they have broken the law. (Very Christian families) If they were shown that article it would literally CAUSE them to throw their computer away.

Like I said. it was the data; the sounds they wanted A:) do you REALLY think they went spelunking at a hex dump of the sound file? and if they do that with sound files, *censored*, they should do it to all files! man, in fact, they should have people doing hex dumps on every single file they ever release on any CD, just in case some random set of characters forms a swear word! the last thing we would want is a Catholic Nun accidentally opening a clipart file in notepad, scrolling down 50 pages, taking 50 bytes from that and accidentally viewing them in a reverse endian format in a Cyrillic codeset, because it spells a dirty word.

Secondly, this doesn't prove anything. I cannot see these files and therefore the only proof they exist is this evidently biassed article. and your word; I'll admit the latter at least carries more weight then a pregnant hippo, but still

And Of Course Microsoft cares more about it's "ideas" and programs and patents, their Microsofts. I mean, what, are they supposed to now build something into hotmail to hueristically ANALYZE conversations to make sure nobody is talking about pirating Adobe programs? No... it's adobe's problem.

And the people you know who are "super-religious", well, don't tell them. you really think they are GOING to accidentally open a deeply nested Wave file by accident and happen to scroll down and somehow make the (weak, I might add, btw)

lastly: every SINGLE article I can find is so full of lies and BS it's hardly even worth reading. None of them understand the basic and quite obvious fact that

MICROSOFT

DOES

NOT

PIRATE

IT

they get somebody ELSE to make the sounds, just like they get other people/artists to create the backdrops and so forth. lastly, Who the smeg gives a *censored*, it's such a crock, I mean, do you find people opening Aiff files on the mac just to find some esoteric and possibly planted reference to some equally esoteric cracking group? I doubt it.

I have THREE installations of XP Pro, SP2 and SP3, and of them have these files. They are NOT installed by the windows XP install.

Solve : Will Apple replace Microsoft??

Answer»

Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 24, 2010, 10:02:48 PM

In my opinion, which does not COUNT for much, whatever advantage Microsoft now has in computer gaming will not last long. Large successful game companies have got it figured out how to port their software over to whatever OS is currently popular with the people. There are quite a few net books out there and there is the Apple iPad coming on strong.

I'm pretty sure that TMJ is refering to "hardcore" games- like, for example, the Call of duty game Carbon has noted, or Fallout 3, Crysis etc. games of that nature that require rather powerful machines.

Now, that isn't to say that a Mac with enough POWER can not be had, but I highly doubt the iPad will be powerful enough to run them. Besides, a large selection of games can probably be found in the Apple store for the Itouch/iphone (and I imagine iPad, as well as the upcoming iMat and iFloor).

Also, it's interesting to note that some of the "higher" games, like Fallout 3, have versions for completely different architectures (such as PS3) so it's probable that it would be a relatively simple task for them to create a version for Linux or Mac OS.

Up to now, a personal computer is either a desktop or laptop. But the point where the distinction between these types of devices and handhold devices is no longer clear. The new personal computers are going to be handhold devices or pocket-sized devices or something you can slip in your backpack or your fanny pouch.
laptop PCs have always been several years behind in terms of power and gaming capabilities, and they will always be both more expensive and harder to upgrade then equivalent desktops, which means that desktops, regardless of the OS, will be the premier choice for gaming.
Unless Microsoft comes up with a really original idea very soon, their MARKET share is going to become smaller.

Now the FCC hopes to use a dispute with the nation's largest cable TV and Internet provider to establish its legal authority to adopt such "network neutrality" regulations. That was my thought. I mean, they're doing nearly the same as virustotal.com and jotti, but just not going to all the bother of giving it to the AVS. The vendors of the scanners being used can do something to make them NOT use their software as a private "pay-for" service. But that all depends on where the Virus Checking Service is hosted. Some countries Internet laws are pretty much non-existent. Quote from: evilfantasy on January 03, 2010, 03:48:56 PM

Just one from the top of my head...came up because of those russian spambots we had recently.Plus there are rumors of North Korea's government promoting and financing computer virus production as a weapon of war against their enemies.Well there's also the hacking "war" between USA and China...The hackers in the USA don't really stand much chance against the "bred" hackers in China...aparently, the Chinese took down about 100 government websites and the Americans just stood there...like a flashbang...they couldn't do anything....and Carbon from Hong-Kong is their leader One server is in the Russian FEDERATION and the other is in the USA. Virtest.com, one of the websites mentioned is definately originally Russian. The English version is obviously a poorly translated version using some online translator. I love how in the FAQ, they talk about making sure your malicious CODE isn't picked up in websites for an extra fee (unless you BUY an Unlimited account).

Personally I think Microsoft has lost the battle in the smart phone market. Their new phone OS is slick but they're taking way too much time on it and seems to me as if they're not that concerned about all the other competitors. Also news like the below quote tell me who the top competitors are going to be in the smart phone arena: RIM, Google Android, and Apple.

Gartner is predicting the Android will surpass Apple soon as there are more handset makers using its operating system, and Android phones are already outselling the iPhone in North America. More startups are developing applications for the Android, further boosting interest among consumers.

Research group NPD said earlier this month that smartphones running on Android accounted for 28% of U.S. unit sales in the first quarter, ahead of the iPhone, but Apple questioned the figure and said it was based on a limited SAMPLE of consumers.
Microsoft is a loser! Not even mentioned in the story.

it asked what has CHANGED in the last 9 years, not what groups of GEEKS still don't understand how to program for anyone but other programmers.Frankly, in watching the video, I think the title WAY over stated the change over the last decade. I was more struck that nothing on the video was really a new innovation, but mostly just improvements on existing technology.

And there's more commentary on this in the Linux community.
Re: Linux on 7" mini netbook ARM-VT8500 ?
Linux Today - Seven-inch tablet runs AndroidNetbooks finally hit the price point they were aiming for when the concept first came out.

The concept of a $100 netbook was intended to spread computers and internet access to third world and developing countries. I haven't seen the numbers RECENTLY, but it seems like more netbooks have been sold in developed rather than undeveloped countries.

Maybe this will speed things up for undeveloped countries.

Solve : CRTC allows changes in billing.?

Answer»

I just found this article on CBC stating that the CRTC is allowing for usage based billing for ISP's.

Which is strange, because of this quote from the CRTC FAQ
Quote

Why doesn't the CRTC regulate Internet services?
In 1999, the CRTC studied the Internet and decided not to regulate it. ACCESS to Internet services was competitive, and both creativity and innovation grew in an environment without regulation. While there was some broadcasting content being offered, most Internet services at the time were text based. The CRTC CONCLUDED that the Internet was meeting the objectives of the Broadcasting Act and Telecommunications Act.
The CRTC periodically reviews its policies to ensure that the objectives CONTINUE to be met.

What can I do about offensive content on the Internet?
The CRTC doesn't regulate content on the Internet. Go to Internet for more information.
If the CRTC DECIDES to poke it's nose (or any other appendage for that matter) into some telecommunications service you can bet MONEY that the end result will disadvantage consumers.truenorth

Not sure where you got 3mb of usable files on a floppy.. mine were generally 1.44mb I have a stack of them gaining dust.
But that's me. Maybe you mean 2.88mb. or the 5- 1/4" came in 160K, 180K, 360K and 1.2MB (I think I missed one (720K?)); 3-1/2 came in 720K, 1.44MB, and later on, 2.88MB. the 2.88MB drives are rare because when they were released the floppy drive was already falling out of favour as the main way of saving files and backups, additionally, the fact that the drive used perpendicular recording made the drives themselves expensive enough to not be a commodity, which means they were included only on a few machines.

When I first read this article, I was surprised how many formats there were for floppy drives. I've used a number of different formats, but there were a lot I'd never heard of.

Solve : Firefox Users Report Problems After Updating - Norton 360 related?

Answer» http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/150736/article.html?tk=nl_cxanws

Users running Firefox along with popular Norton security programs have reported problems after updating the browser to version 3.0.1, according to messages on Symantec Corp.'s and Mozilla Corp.'s support forums.

Mozilla confirmed the accounts Thursday.

"Some of the problems seem to be related to Identity Safe, which is a feature of Norton 360 and other Norton and Symantec offerings," said Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's director for Firefox. "[But] it's not clear that all of the problems are related to that single feature."

Beltzner was responding to questions about post-update problems MENTIONED during Mozilla's weekly Firefox status meeting on Wednesday, when the Norton 360 issue was brought up.

Messages posted by Symantec customers and Firefox users pointed to a wide range of problems with both Norton titles and Firefox, but a majority of the latter said their bookmarks had gone missing, as had the back and forward buttons, after they updated to 3.0.1. Mozilla started pitching that version to users of the older Firefox 2.0.0.16 last week when it turned on an automatic update offer.

Firefox users have been reporting the problem for months -- Firefox 3.0 launched in mid-June -- but the automatic update appeared to push the issue to the forefront.

Symantec customers, meanwhile, complained about the disappearance of Identity Safe, a password manager that's bundled with NUMEROUS Symantec security products, including Norton 360 2.0 and Norton Internet Security 2008, after upgrading Firefox.

"I just installed Firefox 3 under XP and have apparently lost Identity Safe which I depend on," said a user identified as "BobinVA" on a Symantec forum in a message posted last Sunday. "How can I get it back?"

Beltzner said Mozilla and Symantec are on the case. "We're working with people from Norton to try and understand the problems better," he said. "To date, though, neither we nor Norton have been unable to reproduce the problem in our QA labs."

According to Beltzner, older installations of Norton software, most likely those that haven't been kept up-to-date with downloads from Symantec, seem to prevent Firefox from terminating properly when the browser shuts down. "When the user starts up Firefox the next time, the file that's used to store their bookmarks and history can't be read, and as a result the back and forward buttons don't work and no bookmarks are shown," he said. "This coincides with the Identity Safe feature not working as well."

Some users had reported that a reboot ended their problems, Beltzner said. Others have used a Mozilla support document titled "Configuring Norton 360" to quash the issue. "We'll keep looking into the problem, and while it's not happening for all Norton and Firefox users, we understand that for the users it is affecting, it's a SIGNIFICANT problem," Beltzner said.

For its part, Symantec urged users of Norton Internet Security 2008 to first update to version 15.5, which in turn would allow them to download and install a Firefox 3.0 compatibility update. A separate Firefox 3.0 compatibility patch is available for Norton 360. Both patches can be obtained by launching Symantec's Live Update feature from within the security applications.

This wouldn't be the first time that Symantec's Norton software has created problems for other vendors. In May, shortly after Microsoft Corp. launched Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), users blamed the Symantec programs for crippling their PCs after they updated to SP3.

Initially, Symantec said the BUG was Microsoft's fault, but it accepted some responsibility, saying the combination of a flawed Microsoft process and the SymProtect feature in its Norton software had ADDED errant entries to XP's registry. Later Symantec released a free tool that cleaned up the corrupted registry keys.Solution to problem = Get better Antivirus. Quote

Solve : Microsoft Urges Updates for Flaws?

Answer»

Windows is used in most of the world's home computers
Microsoft is urging Windows users to update their systems with the latest security patches it has released to fix three critical flaws in its software.

The flaws mostly affect Windows 2000 and INTERNET Explorer. Users with updated Windows Server 2003 and XP systems are not as much at risk.

If left unplugged, they could allow hackers and virus writers to take control of personal computers remotely.

Microsoft releases security bulletins regularly to alert people to updates.

The most serious of the flaws are awarded a "critical" status.

Open to attack

The first of the three flaws applies to Internet Explorer users. The loophole could leave a computer open to a virus or worm attack, which could then let an attacker take complete control of an affected computer.

A vulnerability was also found in the Print Spooler service and the Plug and Play (PnP) hardware detection feature in Windows, both of which could leave systems open to attack and vulnerable to remote control.

What are the threats on the net?
Users are being urged to DOWNLOAD the patches to fix the flaws. Most security updates happen automatically if the auto update function is activated in Windows software.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at net security firm Sophos, SAID that Windows users should "sit up, listen and take action."

"Although we have seen no malicious code in the wild yet which exploits these critical security holes in Microsoft's code, we have seen malicious WORMS and hackers follow these announcements very soon after the vulnerability's disclosure."

He added: "Fortunately with Windows XP SP2 it is easier to keep your computer up-to-date with security patches than ever before."

I really wouldn't worry Merlin. They are probably just random probes. When I checked my firewall log, I discovered that I'm getting packets from the China Railway Telecommunications Center in China and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number in Marina Del Ray, CA. I'm guessing that your firewall is not responding to them and hence you don't EXIST (on the net that is)

Small bugs in TeaTimer [link] 22. June 2005
Many of those who're USING our new version 1.4 have already noticed an obvious bug: on the Registry Warning dialog, the buttons are misplaced and partly hidden by the checkbox TEXT. But while every software has some bugs, this is one that shouldn't have been necessary. It comes from a bug in our development environment - Borland Delphi - that automatically rearranges graphical items on the user interface every time one works on the project, which basically means about half an hour of work correcting everything each morning before the ACTUAL work can begin. And sometimes, LIKE in this case, the errors created by Delphi EVEN sneak into final releases. We will release an updated version as soon as we've fully tested some workarounds.

Solve : Spyware and kids. (Applies to general users)?

Answer» Spyware and your KIDS
Are your kids exposing you to spyware?

Published: January 5, 2005

If your computer starts to suddenly slow down or you begin to see pop-up windows, even when you're not browsing the Internet, you may be the victim of spyware and other unwanted software. Spyware is software that is automatically downloaded to your computer without your notice, and is often attached to another file you have chosen to download or install. Spyware can also be downloaded to your computer when you click on banner ads on Web sites.

The types of unwanted software programs that kids accidentally download are usually annoying and may slow down your computer, but are typically not dangerous.

If your children regularly use your computer, they may be visiting sites or downloading files that could be exposing your computer to spyware and other unwanted software.
Types of downloads that may contain spyware

Free games downloaded from the Internet

Music, movies, and other software file-sharing programs downloaded from the Internet or from other computers

Animated characters for your desktop

Free screen savers downloaded from the Internet

Toolbars for your Internet browser

Free pop-up blockers that appear on your computer when you are online

Not all of the programs LISTED above will contain unwanted software. The key to helping prevent the installation of spyware is to download programs only from sources you trust and to read all security warnings, license or user agreements, and privacy statements associated with any software you download or install on your computer.

Encourage your kids to ask your PERMISSION before they download anything from the Internet. If you're not sure if the program they want to download contains spyware or other unwanted software, ask a knowledgeable friend or enter the name of the program into your favorite search engine and see if anyone else has reported that it contains spyware.

"Mom, Dad—I promise I didn't download anything"

Sometimes your children may accidentally infect your computer with spyware or other unwanted software without even knowing they've downloaded anything. Some popular sites for kids may try to download programs without your kids even asking for them. Your children may see a warning notifying them that a Web site wants to download a program. They may click random buttons on the window just to get it to disappear. What they click on might just be "I agree."

If you don't think your kids understand what it means to download programs only from trusted sources or if you think they probably won't read all the warnings and agreements that appear while they're surfing the Web, you may have to take a few extra precautionary measures with your home computer. Read How to help keep your kids from downloading spyware to learn more.
