Solve : Spamza - The Ultimate Spamming Weapon - Or is It? |
Answer» HERE Spamza.com is a website that recently went live, where you can enter someone’s - anyone’s - email address, and they will start getting instantly spammed by dozens of newsletters for which they did not sign up. If you’ve had a sudden increase in spam or suddenly found yourself signed up for a lot of newsletters and mailing lists that you didn’t request, Spamza may be why. You see, the Spamza site runs a script that takes their email address and then Spamza signs them up for those newsletters, without their permission. Spamza then also encourages their victims to do the same THING to someone else, by sending that target email address several emails that are the spam equivalent of “nyeah, nyeah”, taunting the victim and saying: “You got spammed! Get your revenge and spam your enemies at Code: [Select]http://www.SpamZa.com http://www.SpamZa.com http://www.SpamZa.com http://www.SpamZa.com http://www.SpamZa.com SpamZa.com will sign up any email to hundreds of newsletters anonymously” Now, clearly this is pure evil. But, is it really what it seems? Let’s think this through. The Spamza script that runs when you enter someone’s email address signs that email address up for a bunch of newsletter mailing lists. However, this only works because those mailing lists don’t use confirmed (double) opt-in, which is considered the industry standard for best email practices. This means that they add that email address to their mailing list without first confirming that the owner of the address really wants to be on the mailing list. Confirmed or double opt-in means that they first send an email to that address asking the owner of that email address to confirm that they really WANT to be on the mailing list, by clicking a link, or replying to the confirmation email. (And actually, some of those mailing lists are confirmed opt-in, and did send confirmations when we did our own testing of Spamza - good for them!) The point here is that the only reason Spamza is able to create the havoc that it does is because people run single opt-in mailing lists, where they grab any email address that comes their way, say “Oh goody! ANOTHER subscriber!”, and add it to their list, without first checking that it was a legitimate subscription. Now, we have been saying for years that running single opt-in mailing lists, even if you are pure of heart, is a wide open security hole, because anybody can sign up someone else. And the response has always been “Oh c’mon, you’re making that up - nobody would actually do that. Who would do that??” Well, here’s your answer. Spamza would do that. Which brings us to our title question: is Spamza really the ultimate spamming weapon? Or, is it the ultimate anti-spammer weapon? Was Spamza created by some whacko who just wanted to see how much spam they could proliferate on the Internet? Or was Spamza created by some ardent anti-spammer, who knew that, among other things, all those single opt-in mailing lists would get in trouble for having been duped into unwittingly proving what the email receiving and anti-spam industries have been saying all along: single opt-in is ripe for abuse? You be the judge - here is what Spamza SAYS about itself: “SpamZa.com is a website designed to promote newsletters and interesting content. WE DO NOT SEND SPAM. SpamZa will subscribe the e-mail you submit to hundreds of popular and free newsletters. You can leave these newsletter at any time. Simply speaking, you put any e-mail, you click “Spam this email!” and we do the rest. The said e-mail will be registred to hundreds of daily newsletter and receive thousands of e-mails, most of them who avoid the junk filter. The point of this website? To spend as much newsletters as possible to as much people as possible. There are very few things the owner of the e-mail can do: change his e-mail address (but you can re-submit his e-mail), manually unsubscribe hundreds of newsletters (but you can resusbcribe him… if you are really evil) or ignore all the message (it becomes impossible to execute the most basic tasks). In short, SpamZa! is a very mean way to create a lot of problems SpamZa was created with the idea that spam and newsletters were our friends, not our enemies. Think about it for a second: some people worked really really hard to write interesting newsletters and emails. The least we can do is read it! SpamZa will subscribe any email sent to hundreds and hundreds of newsletters. Furthermore, its algorithm always being under development, you can expect the e-mail owner to make a lot of friends from Nigeria who have a lot of money to give and he can expect to have your Bank of America/Citigroup/eBay/Paypal account suddenly locked with a poorly written email from [emailprotected] You know all the newsletters that say “we do not redistribute or resell your email” (but do anyway)? We do the opposite. We get your email known, and pretty well known to as many newsletters are possible. Expect any email entered in our form to receive 100-150 emails per day at the bare minimum, most being able to bypass most junk filters. To use our service, enter any email and click “Spam this email!” and get ready to get spammed. You may enter any email you want but please understand this is very, very mean to use. For maximal efficiency, enter the email every day and re-spam it, so even if the person unsubscribe, he’ll get in again the next day. SPAMZA DOES NOT SENDS SPAM. SPAMZA TAKES NO RESPONSABILITY FOR THE E-MAIL YOU CHOOSE TO SUBMIT TO OUR ALGORITHM. SPAMZA WAS CREATED TO PROMOTE POPULAR NEWSLETTERS AND NOT FOR SPAM. SpamZa is perfectly legal and respect all anti-spam policies around. SpamZa is not responsible for any consequences of using its services. SpamZa provides its services in a purely informative manner. The user is solely responsible the email he submits to our engine and algorithm. We are not responsible for any unwanted email from anyone. We do not send unwanted email and do not MAINTAIN a newsletter for ourselves. SpamZa is neither affiliated nor associated with any newsletter or website sent from using this service. SpamZa does not approve nor disapprove any email, communication letter or information sent using its service. If you received spam because someone used SpamZa on you, we do not care. If you want to *censored* because your email is unusable, we do not care, but please send us your hate mail anyway so we can laugh at it. If you are frustrated about our website, good for you. PRIVACY We never reveal the IP of the person who visits our website and submit e-mails, no matter what. We never reveal who subscribed him to SpamZa! and all those newsletters. The victim will most likely never know who subscribed him to this service, making it almost impossible to track the person who subscribed him to so much spam. To all the little shits that try to take us down by submitting complaints — it won’t work. Stop wasting your time and ours and e-mail us if you got a problem” [Ed. Note: Ironically, it appears that it did work, as as of noon EST today, the Spamza.com site is down.] it doesnt send spam but its called spamza? interesting...That's mad! i wonder how mad my dad would be if i did this to him....[warning] don't try this at home i won't be held responsible [/warning] We once did this manually... accidentally found out my friends email password and signed him up to like a thousand free sample things, best one was when some random conservatory company sent round a guy to give him a free quote on getting a conservatory installed, we lol'd FB |

Solve : Thailand bans Grand Theft Auto after taxi driver killing? |
Answer» http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080805/tc_afp/thailandcrimegamesit_080805140834 Quote BANGKOK (AFP) - Thai authorities banned the Grand Theft Auto computer game on Tuesday, after a disturbed teenager allegedly killed a taxi driver in a copycat crime.I have only one thing to say about those who ban computer/video games because of "copy-cat" crimes... It's not the game that makes a person do what he/she does... The person was probably "mentally disturbed" to begin with. Banning a video game should be the least of their worries. However...it takes someone with power and probably a college degree to come up with this sort of "brainstorm" before viewing all the facts.i have some suprising stats for you http://www.gamepolitics.com/2008/05/15/researcher-violent-video-games-do-not-lead-criminal-behavior http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN2S32258420070302There was once a case (a long time ago) where Counter Strike was banned somewhere because a teenager went to a park and shot like seven children in the head. He was later discovered to be an excessive CS player. Come on. How can you get 7 head shots without ever holding a gun? There has to be some other influence. They banned it over one KID? He must be hated.ehh whatever They still have 4chan dont they? That was a long time ago, during the first Counter Strike release. What's not mentioned in the article from AFP but was mentioned in the Bangkok Post was that the boy had admitted to committing the crime because he wanted to know what it was like to do things from GTA in real life. Violent games may not lead to criminal behavior in most children, no. Given the number of games sold (millions) and the number of "copy-cat" activities (few), that is a given without statistics or research to show it. If violent video games leads to violent behavior, there should be kids running around shooting people in the streets, running over people with cars, and blowing #### up. It doesn't mean it doesn't happen though. Give an unstable mind the right TRIGGER, and a person will do almost anything. Video games are no different than TV and MOVIES, crime novels, or even comic books. Guns, video games, movies, and comic books don't kill people. People kill people.im gonna try toget World of warcraft banned from the US by burning down random builiding and throwing ice cubes at cars and then say im a lvl 70 Ice/fire mage specced.Wefro... This one's for you: http://www.saviourpc.com/forums/index.php/topic,15.0.html LOL NiceFunny, I just came back from a shopping mall near me and they're still selling the PS2 GTA box set which has all the PS2 GTA games in one package...Quote from: Saviour on August 07, 2008, 06:57:31 AM Wefro... Lol! About using the searchbar got to UG and see how often they make jokes about the search bar.Well, I'd like to know where that researcher got his stats that violent crime among the young is down... City of Chicago Public Schools has over twenty children killed in a year... |

Solve : New QuickTime Flaw? |
Answer» HERE A security think tank says it has found a vulnerability in Apple Inc.'s QuickTime multimedia player that can be exploited remotely to compromise Windows Vista PCs upgraded to Service Pack 1, as well as those with Windows XP SP2. According to the scant details published on the GNUCitizen blog, the exploit involves a maliciously crafted media file. When a user opens the file, which can be hosted on a Web site, the vulnerability in QuickTime allows the hacker to take complete control of the machine, according to Petko D. Petkov, known to the hacking community as "pdp." Petkov doesn't think users are in danger of being attacked as of yet. "I highly doubt that anyone knows how to exploit this vulnerability," Petkov said. "I haven't shared the details with anyone, and the actual vulnerability is different enough to be RATHER challenging for even some of the most GIFTED hackers out there." In a video with a thumping techno beat, Petkov shows a QuickTime file sitting on the desktop of a PC running XP SP2. When a user opens the malicious file, Petkov is then shown to have control of the PC -- the evidence that he has control comes from the fact that the applications Paint, Calculator and Notepad are seen launching, apparently without further user intervention. The demonstration is repeated on a PC running Windows Vista inside a virtual machine. More and more hackers are TURNING to exploiting vulnerabilities in applications as a means of launching attacks, since it's becoming increasingly DIFFICULT to find problems in operating systems, Alan Paller, director of research for the SANS Institute, said last week at the Infosec conference in London. Petkov said Monday that he has notified Apple of the problem. The company did not respond to a request for comment. QuickTime has proved to be one of the more porous applications. Apple, which doesn't have a regular patching schedule like Microsoft Corp. does, patched the application for at least the sixth time earlier this month, fixing 11 vulnerabilities. |

Solve : Mystery web attack hijacks your clipboard? |
Answer» http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/08/15/webbased_clipboard_hijacking/ A new web-based ATTACK is making the rounds that tries to SPREAD poisonous links by hijacking end users' clipboards. Forum discussions here, here, here, here and elsewhere all report the same thing: the commenter surfs to a seemingly legitimate site (MSNBC.com comes up more than once) and suddenly a malicious link is copied to the clipboard. The rogue link remains EVEN after the user copies a new batch of text. The only way to remove it is to reboot the computer. The attack has been reported by Firefox users running both OS X and Windows, but we wouldn't be surprised to hear that other browsers and operating systems are ALSO vulnerable. It's unclear exactly how the attack spreads. The Spyware Sucks blog posits here that banner ads transmitting bad Adobe Flash code is responsible, and that makes sense to us. If you've ENCOUNTERED this attack, please leave a comment below detailing exactly where you encountered it. Those behind the attack appear intent on propagating a link (for the record, it's xp-vista-update.net, but we recommend staying away) that claims users' PCs are petri dishes hopelessly infected with malware unless they are immediately cleaned by a fraudulent anti-malware program. By permanently attaching the link to the clipboard, attackers are betting the user will paste it in emails, blog posts or directly into a browser's address bar. Attacks like these are another reason why running the NoScript extension on Firefox makes a lot of sense. It's not perfect, but it can insulate you from a huge amount of the attack code floating around on the web.Despite my stance on malware issues, I have to admit that this is pretty clever. |

Solve : Comcast to slow traffic for bandwidth hogs for 10 to 20 minutes? |
Answer» It looks LIKE Internet service provider Comcast is moving forward with plans to reduce connection speeds for its heaviest users. Senior vice president Mitch Bowling told Bloomberg yesterday that certain Comcast customers will see their Internet speeds slow for periods of 10 to 20 minutes. LinkThat's bad enough - but nothing like DARNED HUGHES Net - I am on satellite and any hogging over a certain amount and speeds can drop to a crawl for 24 hours!!!! Answer» What EXACTLY is Toshiba thinking? Not too long ago, the company lost the high-def BATTLE, shutting down its HD DVD business. Solve : Google will replace Gmail? |
Answer» Quote from: Salmon Trout on November 17, 2014, 12:24:28 PM Well, I have had an Inbox invite, and do you know what? There are 2 versions, one for Android and one for iOS! It's just a phone app! What was all the fuss about? If only somebody had mentioned this earlier, right? Well, Geek was fulminating about Inbox "replacing Gmail" and I suppose I just went with that (I know, I know!) GOT my invite as well. As Salmon Trout pointed out there are 2 apps, 1 each for iOS and Android. However, there is also an app for the Chrome Browser so technically there's 3 apps. Anyway, it wants to "bundle" or group different emails which I don't really care about. I'll use it a it to see if it grows on me.Quote from: patio on November 08, 2014, 08:06:48 AM Geek should read more carefully before posting nonsense...Gmail is better then hotmail and yahoo mail. I have had many PROBLEMS with both, but not one yet with gmail. Good thing, its just the app name their changing, I would hate to have to change all account emails associated with my gmail.Gmail? Inbox? Inbox by Gmail? WHATEVER you call it, many say they like it better. Some hate it. Update: Now it comes from Microsoft. What? The best Gmail app for the iPhone is now made by Microsoft Quote Gmail is the world's most popular email service, and the iPhone, as if this week didn't make it ABUNDANTLY clear, is the world's most popular smartphone. The two have been around for years and years, however the experience of using them together has never been particularly good. *censored*, let's be honest, if you're relying on Google's own email apps on the iPhone, your experience is doubleplusungood. But there are plenty of alternatives in Apple's App Store, and it just so happens that the best among them now bears the name of Microsoft Outlook. So the new Gmail is now Outlook? Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 18, 2015, 12:38:52 PM So the new Gmail is now Outlook?Gmail is an email service. You can ACCESS it using a web browser, or via a phone app, or using an email client like Outlook or Thunderbird or even good old Eudora as well as many others. |

Solve : Intel at ISSCC 2015: Reaping the Benefits of 14nm and Beyond? |
Answer» 14 nm is 14 nanometers. This is a reference to the width of a trace used in interconnection of areas of an large Integrated Chip chip design. A typical Core-2 CPU might use 65 nm traces and have some 800 million transistors. It was explained that while 10nm will have more masking steps than 14nm, and the delays that bogged down 14nm COMING LATE to market will not be present at 10nm – or at least reduced. We were told that Intel has learned that the increase in development complexity of 14nm required more internal testing stages and masking implementations was a major reason for the DELAY, as well as requiring sufficient yields to go ahead with the launch. As a result, Intel is improving the efficiency testing at each stage and expediting the transfer of wafers with their testing protocols in ORDER to avoid delays. We were quoted that 10nm should be 50% faster to market than 14nm was as a result of these adjustments. So while the additional masking steps at 10nm which ultimately increases fixed costs, Intel is still quoting that their methods results in a reducing in terms of cost per transistor without needing a completely new patterning process. EUV lithography was discussed, but Intel seems to be hoping to avoid it until it is absolutely necessary, as EUV development so far has been slower to progress than expected.About the move away from silicon: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/02/intel-forges-ahead-to-10nm-will-move-away-from-silicon-at-7nm/ Heavy reading! |

Solve : The latest news on the HyperLoop? |
Answer» Coming sooner than expected... The Hyperloop is a conceptual high-speed transportation system put forward by entrepreneur Elon Musk, incorporating reduced-pressure TUBES in which pressurized capsules ride on a cushion of air that is driven by a combination of linear induction motors and air compressors. This is a very futuristic design that will require a bunch of NEW hardware and software. Very interesting story . Thanks for posting it, Patio. Potentially this kind of thing can reduce airplane travel and reduce California's carbon OUTPUT from jet fuel. The Hyperloop would use only a fraction of fuel of a jet airplane. The test track will help engineers estimate the cost and benefit possibilities of the concept. Here is an older story that explains the concept in more detail. Hyperloop Explained: How Elon Musk's Futuristic Transit System Works. >This is a very futuristic design that will require a bunch of new hardware and software. Well there was a pressure-based tube transport in New York nearly 100 years ago. But this is at a larger scale.Good catch BC. Quote The film An American Tail: The Treasure of Manhattan Island involves the main characters Fievel Mouskewitz and Tony Toponi exploring a series of caverns directly beneath one of the abandoned terminals for the Pneumatic Transit system.Other references where made. In the Ghost busters movie there was a reference to it. Back in those days they used humans to do the calculations and got it done in a week. |

Solve : Memristor ... HP is working on a computer that will run with them? |
Answer» http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/26/tech/mci-eth-memristor/ My concern with this technology is that appears that it would be even more susceptible to solar flares and ionic interference etc. Unless extremely well shielded maybe. DaveLembke, upon reading the article there does not seem to be any mention of sensitivity to external noise. All current semiconductors can be damaged by extreme high levels of radiated energy. But that is verty rare. This Wikipedia article needs clarification, but it conveys the idea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiation_hardening Quote Most semiconductor electronic components are susceptible to radiation damage; radiation-hardened components are based on their non-hardened EQUIVALENTS, with some design and manufacturing variations that reduce the susceptibility to radiation damage. Due to the extensive DEVELOPMENT and testing required to produce a radiation-tolerant design of a microelectronic chip, radiation-hardened chips tend to lag behind the most recent developmentsOften Gamma radiation is cited as the worst case. Like a nuclear device went off nearby and zonked your computer. However, that article goes on to say... Quote Chip packaging materials were an insidious source of radiation that was found to be causing soft errors in NEW DRAM chips in the 1970s. Traces of radioactive elements in the packaging of the chips were producing alpha particles, which were then occasionally discharging some of the capacitors used to store the DRAM data bits. These EFFECTS have been reduced today by using purer packaging materials, and employing error-correcting codes to detect and often correct DRAM errors. |

Answer» Maybe they have a good idea. Punching the correct code into a computer can't verify your identity. It simply shows that someone remembered – or stole – the right combination of letters and numbers.Another method... Quote The New York Institute of Technology is working on a way to use people’s LINGUISTIC patterns as they type as a way to identify them – for instance, how person revises sentences and how long they take before CORRECTING typing mistakes, and the amount of time they pause before beginning a new sentence. So my computer will , at LAST, remember who I am? That sounds pretty amazing and very Bladerunner-ish |

Answer» The story is almost a month old. Here is one report from the Washington Post. Chinese HACKERS hijacked Forbes.com and used the site as part of an attack on the U.S. DEFENSE and financial industry, according to cybersecurity researchers at iSIGHT Partners and Invincea. Some AV programs do not find it. This is why things like Adobe Flash and Java Applets are terrible.Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 10, 2015, 12:27:46 PM This is why things like Adobe Flash and Java Applets are terrible.OK, Now would you like to elaborate? Without Java, what would we use as cross-platform tool? As for Adobe flash, Is MS Silver Light more secure?Nope...Quote Without Java, what would we use as cross-platform tool?Java Applets. Java is FINE for desktop applications. Java Applets are pretty much useless garbage. Quote As for Adobe flash, Is MS Silver Light more secure?Probably not. What I'm saying is these extensions that basically run at the browser level and are designed simply to allow more crap to run within the browser. The Adobe Flash Plugin is built and compiled to native code for each system it runs on. it runs at the same privilege level as the browser. Effectively the same with Java Applets. Browser plugins that sit on top of the browser, running within the browser process for the purpose of allowing other PROGRAMMING to EXECUTE. A security problem in Java or Adobe Flash (or silverlight)- in this case, will make any browser security considerations obsolete, because once the browser turns over execution control to the plugin it can't do anything security-wise. HTML5 thankfully makes most of these trashy plugins obsolete, and at least isolates security issues to the browser implementation. |

Solve : Nasty Flash Drive that SPIKES the USB port? |
Answer» Nasty Thumb Drive.... draws POWER from USB port and then discharges a high voltage spike to USB controller and everything down stream in the path. Ethernet standards require electrical isolation between the networked device (computer, phone, etc.) and the network cable up to 1500 V AC or 2250 V DC for 60 seconds.[143] USB has no such requirement as it was designed for peripherals closely associated with a host computer, and in fact it connects the peripheral and host grounds. This gives Ethernet a significant safety advantage over USB with peripherals such as cable and DSL modems connected to external wiring that can assume hazardous voltages under certain fault conditions.[144]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB |

Solve : Wired - PC Dying and not coming back .... agree or disagree?? |
Answer» While many people probably are opting for smaller portable devices. I have to disagree that the PC is dying. Dying generally means obsolescence in near future, but there are so many uses for a PC that a small portable tablet, iPhone, etc just can not replace. In response to a complaint we received under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 1 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read the DMCA complaint that caused the removal(s) at ChillingEffects.org.Apparently saying "PC Is Dying" violates some kind of digital rights. Using that kind of logic, it MUST not be true, because it is illegal to say that. The "PC is dying" nonsense is what article writers decide to blab about when they are about to hit a deadline and have no topic. Let's look at this article piecemeal: Quote Market research outfit IDC has revised its prediction of PC shipments in 2015 downward. It’s projecting a drop of nearly 5 percent this year, worse than its earlier forecast of a 3.3 percent decline. In all, IDC expects 293.1 million PC units to ship this year. What is a "PC shipment"? From the looks of the data, it only counts prefabs. This means the alleged decline could have a corresponding increase in people building their own systems- we'd never know, because they either do not have or do not provide that data. Furthermore, look at that prediction- they predict 293.1 million PC units to ship this year. That is a BIG number. Is it smaller than previous numbers? Allegedly. But it's still a colossal number- it would take an average human heart over 8 years to pump that many times. To suggest that this data indicates that the "PC is dying" is a last-ditch effort by an incompetent writer to come up with an article 3 hours before the deadline. Quote To put that figure in perspective, Apple sold more than 74 million iPhones during the last quarter alone. At an annualized rate, that would put iPhone sales alone above IDC’s prediction for the entire PC market. As they are saying, Q4 of 2014 saw 74 million iPhones. By multiplying it by 4, Look! That's bigger than the prediction for PC sales next year... So? First off, when you look at the other 3 quarters of 2014 instead of Q4, it becomes clear WHY they chose to just MULTIPLY that quarter's value by 4; It's much larger than the previous 3 quarters. for Q1,Q2 and Q3 respectively, Apple sold 51 million, 43.7 million, and 35.2 million iphones. That's a total of 203.9 Million iphones. Why, it's almost as if they specifically chose Q4 to multiply by 4, because the only way for their article to hold any weight is to misinterpret and fiddle with the evidence to make it consistent with your off-the-wall, click-bait title. They practically admit to this- "Apple won’t likely SUSTAIN that pace—it tends to sell more iPhones at the end of the year"... So why did they multiply the Q4 report which they KNOW to be larger than the previous 3 by 4 in order to misrepresent the results in a apples to oranges comparison? then they give us this gem. Quote And not just in terms of the number of devices moving. The PC industry is also losing money. According to IDC, the PC market shrank 0.8 percent last year to $201 billion. This year, it expects that number to balloon to 6.9 percent. By 2019, the firm expects the overall market to shrink to $175 billion, or several billion less than Apple’s 2014 revenue ($183 billion).I don't know what the "PC industry" is, or how the IDC report indicates it, since the IDC report is about PC shipments and appears to be specifically the shipments of manufactured machines. That hardly represents the "PC Industry" as a whole- are motherboard, memory, Video card, and expansion card manufacturers not part of the "PC industry"? And then the "prediction" says it is going to rise anyway- so even though it is specifically limiting the "industry" to the prebuilt manufacturers, it's still going to go up. (And why the constant comparisons to Apple? Apple's revenue includes part of the "PC Industry" revenue, given that they sell computers). It's worth noting that IDC predictions do not have a good track record for accuracy. Bear in mind they also predict that Windows Phone will overtake iOS. here is a good breakdown. Basically, these "analysts" are really just giving idiot writers something to write about when they can't come up with a decent topic. "it's 9PM and I have a midnight deadline, I need to write an article and fast- I guess I'll just blabber about the latest IDC predictions, just like I did last year." Even if they had a track record for accuracy- it's useless. They make a claim about the "PC Industry" as a whole, but the data only shows information on prebuilt PC shipments. One may as well argue that Oranges are going to be phased out of the market after the holiday season because Mandarin orange sales dropped. It's looking at a smaller portion of the industry and then trying to take data applying to that smaller portion, extrapolate to cover the entire industry, and then use THAT to predict the future. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 13, 2015, 08:10:58 PM Apparently saying "PC Is Dying" violates some kind of digital rights. Solve : Windows 10 Pirated Copies will get free upgrade too? |
Answer» Not quite sure if I understand why they would automatically make a pirated copy legal? Absolutely no way i can follow your logic this time Geek...Well.. I did say I can't understand it. The article claims that this will HELP MS wean China users away from Widows XP. Hard to understand the logic. To illustrate very badly: Let's say you are a Ford dealer in China. You notices people are driving ten-year old Fords cars, some of them stolen. So then you declare: "People driving old fords, please listen. Just bring in your old Ford, legal or not. I will give you a free new Ford that up-to-date good for no change and I not grab you to jail. Pleaz help me STOP Chevrolet selling cars in your country." The dealer will make it up on volume. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 19, 2015, 10:24:53 PM Well.. I did say I can't understand it. The article claims that this will help MS wean China users away from Widows XP. Hard to understand the logic. Given how prevalent and commonplace piracy is, providing an upgraded version at no cost makes the most sense from a market share perspective, And bringing them forward to a newer PLATFORM provides further opportunities to sell newer products, both those that can be pirated, as well as those that cannot (such as their subscription services). It can also be considered to be a move against counterfeiters and malware authors, who might make their living selling pirated software copies and inserting malware into those copies before doing so. Microsoft wants OT push their subscription-based services such as Office 365, Skype, and arguably Azure. Many of these require Windows 8 or later due to System services and capabilities they use. By effectively providing Windows 10 for free to PRACTICALLY everybody not only with a Windows 7 or 8 license but also to those using pirate copies, Microsoft is ensuring that those subscription-based services have a homogenous platform and can be used on more systems. Ok... so they are sort of going the inkjet printer direction for their OS... as an analogy where say a printer company gave away ink jet printers. In the end they make up their money in all the ink that the customer will be using etc, as well as due to success of FREE with a catch they convert many people to 10 and so they have a larger customer base to sell apps/programs to etc. This is yet another one of these stories where news outlets totally misinterpret what Microsoft actually meant in order to make the headline more appealing. Microsoft later released an update to what they meant which was that while pirated copies will get the update to Windows 10 (much like they do with other Windows updates such as Windows 8.1), it does not magically make it a genuine or legal copy - The Windows 10 copy is still going to technically be classed as pirated. The updates can be seen here: http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/03/windows-10-will-be-a-free-upgrade-for-genuine-and-non-genuine-users/. It's not like Microsoft decided "hey, we should give Windows 10 to people with pirated copies", it's because with most pirated copies, it is not possible for Microsoft to easily tell whether the activation is hacked or not. It's exactly the same as Windows updates, they don't apply to unactivated versions of Windows but if the activation has been hacked, the updater cannot tell that it is a pirated copy and will allow the updates to be installed. I do certainly see MS moving away from their current model of charging a fortune for Windows licences and instead offering it cheaper with free updates, then making money off of other things like the store and subscriptions for things like Office.Quote it's because with most pirated copies, it is not possible for Microsoft to easily tell whether the activation is hacked or not. hmm... I figured the WGA was enough to counter the hacked activations etc. But reading the wiki on this it looks like MS dropped the WGA after Vista since there is no info here about 7 or 8. I thought they were still testing validity. But not having any illegal activations of my own , I wasn't aware that it looks like they may have done away with WGA blats. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Genuine_AdvantageQuote from: DaveLembke on March 20, 2015, 09:41:44 AM
They did not drop WGA. It is however trivial to workaround. I don't let it install or run at all if I can help it, and consider it invasive spyware. |

Solve : Microsoft Update pushing Skype bloatware? |
Answer» Two updates came to me just now and one has nothing to do with SECURITY or stability. I don't have Skype installed. Windows Defender definition updates also show as optional updates...The KB article documents how it determines if Skype is installed. I'd guess that the Skype that comes installed with Windows 8 may be considered an installation unless it has been removed.Optional or not Microsoft shouldn't be pushing software (bloatware) installs through Windows Update. Doing that is worse than third party software installing adware.Microsoft does it? Bloatware. Package managers do it? Best thing since sliced bread.Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 24, 2015, 02:07:29 PM Microsoft does it? Bloatware. What planet are you on? Windows Updates are for security and stability and not to push out unnecessary software installs. The Windows Update Applet covers both Windows Update as well as Microsoft Update. Optional updates such as those for Skype, office, Lync, Windows Defender, Virtual PC, and other MS stuff typically come from Microsoft Update. That is why they are unchecked by default and appear as optional updates. Microsoft Updates appear when the software for which they are applicable is installed; I see updates for Office, Visual STUDIO, and Skype as optional updates, for example, but I don't see updates for Lync or anything else. Other optional updates include things like the x64 update listed in your screenshot, which only applies to those using JAPANESE or Korean language IME. I wasn't able to get the Skype update item to appear on any system on which I had not installed Skype for Desktop, and once I did, the update appeared (since I install a older version). I was thinking perhaps the preinstalled Skype might trigger the Microsoft Update but apparently it doesn't- I had to install Skype for Desktop before it appeared. I've not yet tried it but it may be the case that the update will still appear after I uninstall Skype as well, if the registry keys hang around. That's my point. It wasn't an update. I don't have Skype installed. It says, "Skype for Windows desktop 7.0", not "7.0 Update for Skype" (or however they would describe a Skype update).I can only see it on my systems that meet the following criteria: 1.The Desktop Version of Skype is installed or was installed previously. 2.The Windows Update Setting "Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows" was selected. I don't think it is SUPPOSED to continue to appear after it is uninstalled, but once I installed Skype 6.21, even after I uninstalled it the item continue to appear. Could be a Windows Update oddity related to the DataStore cache or something. Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 24, 2015, 06:40:35 PM Could be a Windows Update oddity related to the DataStore cache or something. That's all I can think of. Since XP I have always been pretty diligent about removing all of the 'Windows Essentials' software because I don't want it. I even disabled the Windows 8.1 OneDrive integration. So when the Skype install popped up today I was a little disappointed. |

Solve : AdBlock Plus defeats German publishers in court? |
Answer» The creator of software that stops adverts from appearing on websites has defeated two news publishers that want to prevent its tech being used on their pages. What is Adblock Plus? But am I missing something? If a web site wants ads on their own site, why not just do it in a way that does not annoy the USER? Adblock Plus doesn't force users to install their plugin in user's computer. It is on user's decision if they want to install the plugin or not.☆Fun fact: "GOOD" advertisers can pay the ABP developer to whitelist their ads. By default Adblock Plus allows certain ads (for a FEE) but you can disable the "non-intrusive" ads in the settings. It's the nonsense, DECEPTIVE and/or intrusive ads that get blocked by default. There are also multiple other ad blockers available and a few have a fairly large user base. ABP is just the oldest and most well known. On another note, playing devils advocate, you can manually whitelist and blacklist ads in ABP. Most of the internet depends on ad revenue. If your favorite website has non-intrusive ads then consider not blocking them or just blacklist those that are annoying. |

Solve : New Rasberry Pi with display is no joke.? |
Answer» New Rasberry PI with display is no joke. The popular $35 Raspberry Pi 2 is an uncased computer that is already being used in drones, ROBOTS, gadgets, tablets and even desktops. The otherwise stationary computer can be transformed into a laptop even by beginners with no hardware assembly experience. More recently, Eric Brown wrote this on Apr 14. Raspberry Pi gains an E-paper display Quote Percheron is just shy of its $15,241 Kickstarter goal and has already sold out two early bird rounds. The E-Paper HAT Display is currently available for a low of 39 UK Pounds (about $57) or 69 Pounds ($101) for a two-pack. Shipments are due in September. The links above have some nice photos. Yeah, not a replacement for your desktop. But a great idea for embedded computer with a piratical display in your next project. The e-ink screen looks cool, especially in applications where power efficiency is important when the screen needs to display for long times. I'm not overly sure about the benefit of the laptop version. It costs $300 including the Pi which is easily enough to get a much more powerful and useful, brand new regular laptop. I really don't see where this would be useful.Well... some Do-It-Yourself people want to build a laptop. However, it is hard to do, one has limited choices and the components are pricy. Now they have the raw materials with Rsdberry Pi. And it's a British product, made in Wales! God Bless the Welsh...What did a Welshman's first love say when he asked her to marry him? "Bahh."“It is possible to draw a completely new image to the PANEL or to partially redraw sections of the display, using functions from the Python Imaging Library (Pillow) and text can be placed using a variety of system fonts in various sizes,” said the developer at Percheron. |
Answer» Yeah, it is an old story. But just now there was a new spark pf PR from MS. Jan 21, 2015But look at this: Microsoft's HoloLens was the big unexpected news that will no doubt have everyone talking for a while. Basically it is a headset, that will one day, project its operating system over what you see in real, everyday life. It will supersede Google Glass and any other existing virtual eyewear already on the market. But what's really special about HoloLens is that it doesn't need to be paired with any other device in order to work. For any SKEPTICS out there, NASA will be using Microsoft's new prototype technology in order to CONTROL its Mars' Rovers, as soon as July. At the event, Microsoft gave demos to DEMONSTRATE how the HoloLens could be used in everyday life, showing a woman CREATING a drone model, shaping it using her hands and via voice commands. ... from Google.
