Answer» The full tile is: Developers also did not like the shell semantics of PowerShell, so classes were added. Also, PowerShell wasn't in Visual Studio, so Snover's team worked to integrate PowerShell Tools for Visual Studio, known as "POSHtools." He explained that POSHtools is a Visual Studio plug-in that adds Intellisense highlighting for working with PowerShell scripts. There initially were no unit tests or validation framework for PowerShell, so the team collaborated with VMware to ship Pester in WINDOWS. There was no code tooling in PowerShell, so Snover's team added SCRIPT ANALYTICS.Full Story Here Anybody using Windows Server should READ. |

Solve : Mass Media Reports 'Obama phone' fraud.? |
Answer» This is about three months old and based on stories back in 2012 & 2013. Well, to be fair, the program that the woman was referring to in the 2012 video -- which was taken outside of a Romney campaign event -- really has nothing to do with President Obama; it's been around for years (1996 to be exact).Source: Naturalnews Mainstream Media Reports Free Fone Fraud. More non-news from the Geeker. Natural News (formerly Newstarget) is a website founded and operated by Mike Adams. It is dedicated to the sale of various DIETARY supplements, promotion of alternative medicine, controversial nutrition and health claims, and various conspiracy theories, such as "chemtrails", the purported dangers of fluoride in drinking water (as well as those of monosodium glutamate and aspartame), and purported health problems caused by allegedly "toxic" ingredients in vaccines, including the now-discredited link to autism. Characterized as a "conspiracy-minded alternative medicine website", Natural News has approximately 7 million unique visitors per month. Founder Mike Adams has been accused of using sockpuppet accounts to fraudulently increase the vote count in his self-nomination for a Shorty Award. The journal Vaccine accused Adams of spreading "irresponsible health information" through Natural News. He has also been accused of using "pseudoscience to sell his lies" Adams is an AIDS DENIALIST, a 9/11 truther, a birther and endorsed conspiracy theories surrounding the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, as well as surrounding the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. According to John Banks, Adams uses "pseudoscience to sell his lies" and is "seen as generally a quack and a shill by science bloggers." One such blogger, David Gorski of ScienceBlogs, called Natural News "one of the most wretched hives of scum and quackery on the Internet," and the most "blatant purveyor of the worst kind of quackery and paranoid anti-physician and anti-medicine conspiracy theories anywhere on the Internet", and a one-stop-shop for "virtually every quackery known to humankind, all slathered with a heaping helping of unrelenting hostility to science-based medicine and science in general." Peter Bowditch of the website Ratbags, and Jeff McMahon writing for Forbes commented about the site. Steven Novella of NeuroLogica Blog called NaturalNews "a crank alt med site that promotes every sort of medical nonsense imaginable." Novella continued: "If it is unscientific, antiscientific, conspiracy-mongering, or downright silly, Mike Adams appears to be all for it – whatever sells the "natural" products he hawks on his site." Mike Adams, self-styled "Health Ranger". I think I touched on his use of them as a source here. That does not appear to have stopped him using it as a source, and I suspect even if he did we would instead merely be provided citations and sources from any number of other conspiratard websites.I'm trying to find a Forum addon or switch to prevent Geeks posts in the Computer News section...so far ...no luck.Quote from: patio on April 26, 2015, 05:25:46 PM I'm trying to find a Forum addon or switch to prevent Geeks posts in the Computer News section...so far ...no luck.May I respectfully reply. All you need to do is post some guidelines for that section. As for the title 'Mass Media Reports 'Obama phone' fraud' , yes, taht was from a website with dubious credibility. However, it was based on earlier reports from the mass media. The title below was publicized buy CBS Denver back in January 26, 2015. Other poplar media did similar stories on t the free phone program. Phone Company ‘Outraged’ By Fraud, Abuse In ‘Obamaphone’ Program http://denver.cbslocal.com/2015/01/26/phone-company-outraged-by-fraud-abuse-in-obamaphone-program/ To clarify, the term ‘Obamaphone' could be derogatory, but it has been in poplar use for some time. Perhaps you could add it to the list of popular expressions that are not allowed on Computer Hop.e Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 26, 2015, 06:01:10 PM http://denver.cbslocal.com/2015/01/26/phone-company-outraged-by-fraud-abuse-in-obamaphone-program/ For a new story, that is surprisingly poorly written. I had to re-read a few portions to understand what was being communicated. Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 26, 2015, 06:01:10 PM To clarify, the term ‘Obamaphone' could be derogatory, but it has been in poplar use for some time. Perhaps you could add it to the list of popular expressions that are not allowed on Computer Hop.e I think the strangest part is that the "Obamaphone" program, known as "lifeline" has been an fcc project since 1985., with wireless/cellphone plans being introduced in 2005. Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 26, 2015, 07:40:00 PM For a new story, that is surprisingly poorly written. I had to re-read a few portions to understand what was being communicated.Yes. The first program was for a land line and the customer paid about $7 per mont instead of the normal $15 for residential service. Meanwhile, such home phone service went up to a much higher price. Later, cell phone service was added. Byt the new wrinkle is that the new service would be fee to the customer. No contract. No taxes, No billing. Next, some began to offer free data and text. The system grew rapidly and allowed some to abuse the system. Salesmen went out into shopping malls and other public places to sign up low-income people for the program. The salesmen were paid by the phone company to give away phones. Around 2012 and later reports of fraud and abuse began to surface. Only morfe recently has the main stream media got the story. It is now much bigger that the original 'LIFE-Line' low cost land line. It has become a social program that makes money for the telecom industry. But who pays for it? That is the big question. Think about it. The phones are non-transferable, but that does not stop individuals from selling the free phones to buy a case of beer. And the salesmen are motivated to push the cell phones to people that do not really need them. My reason fro posting this was to draw attention to a program that has gone AWRY. It was never my intent to multivitamins and food supplement. I have applied for one of the new phones that come with Internet. I applied for it at a strip mall here wee I live. They did not have the phones there, but toke my name and address. Presumably they will check and see if I am who I said I am. A number of people I know have got one of these. If an individual has less than $15,00 a year income, he can qualify. My social security is way under that. Is there any political motive in this 'Obamaphone' scandal? Forum rules prevent me from stating the obvious. Still, the increase in abuse is real. IMHO a better approach would be to lower the cost of all cell service to low-income families. But not just give it away for free. Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 26, 2015, 08:53:24 PM IMHO a better approach would be to lower the cost of all cell service to low-income families. But not just give it away for free. I think this leads into an interesting point. Social services like this tend to focus on necessities. Shelter, Food, basic communication- and personally I'm not entirely convinced that a mobile device falls into that category. They have become ubiquitous nowadays of course- and everybody seems to have a smartphone, for example, but I 'm not sure that is a good reason to subsidize mobile devices in this fashion for low-income families and individuals. As I mentioned earlier, the monthly fee for a low-income Life Line was about $7 per month plus tax. So that might mean the the real cost of the land line is about $7 per month and not the $28 they now want for home phone service. The cost of a cheap TracFone is maybe about $8 per month , plus the cost of the phone. Therefore, it would be reasonable to put low-income families on a low cost cell phone rather than a wired phone. As for Internet service, that is now becoming an ISSUE the politicians want to get into. Some argue that youngsters who do not have Internet are at a disadvantage. That leads to a debate. As you know, Microsoft showed that you can give people free internet by using abandoned TV frequencies. But that is another topic. |

Solve : Microsoft Launches .Net for Linux and Mac? |
Answer» http://techcrunch.com/2015/04/29/microsoft-launches-its-net-distribution-for-linux-and-mac/ Now all they need to do is port DirectX for Linux and I'd be loving it!!! The only thing holding me back from making Linux my main platform is the lack of DirectX for gaming performance. In order to play my vast collection of games, I have to stick with Windows. I have tried running games through Linux and Wine and OpenGL and the performance of games that do run lags severely in frames per second such as a video card that would get 60+ FPS would be 8 to 15 FPS such as when playing World of Warcraft under Linux Mint through Wine and OpenGL video drivers for both AMD and nVidia cards when tested with both. If I could play all games without issues on Linux Mint with DirectX support it would be a perfect gaming ENVIRONMENT for me. Not going to hold my breath on this one though as for Microsoft is not likely to hand away DirectX to the open source community when they want to SELL Windows and for gamers that play titles that havent been ported through steam etc, it MEANS that they will retain customers of Windows for gaming. If there was only a way to wrap the DirectX to MAKE it work under Linux that would be awesome. The .NET Platform runs on top of the OS. So Roslyn and the various language compilers can be independent of the OS. DirectX is something of a different beast, since it uses Windows-only technologies (COM) in it's interface, and IMPLEMENTATION. |

Solve : Microsoft tightens Windows 10's Secure Boot screws? |
Answer» Full story: Is Microsoft not requiring manufacturers.... any OEM that decides to roll out otherwise standard architecture laptops and desktops that doesn't allow Secure Boot to be disabled is not going to be getting positive reviews once that comes out. The articles saying Microsoft is "tightening their grip" are silly click-bait titles.Wait and see. ...meanwhile, back at the ranch... Linux users alarmed over Windows 10 lockout Just for a little historical perspective: Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 09, 2014, 10:34:38 AM Right. Do even try it. Until you first ask around. It has been widely reported new laptops with Windows 8 with not let you install any other OS. Really. Thanks BC, that jogs the mind. Here are some random thoughts. Just random thoughts. • MS will give free Windows for machines with secure boot locked. • OEM will give one year warranty on machines with secure boot . • When one OEM is acquired by another, an update will lock secure boot. • A Free Anti-virus will only work if secure boot is locked on. • Software support subscriptions only for companies the use secure boot. • Big company sells ton of PCs with option advertising. Then later locks it. • Class action against MS for making OEM later lock secure boot. What else? EDIT: Forgot to mention. Secure boot can be locked off later via update. This is yet another thing being blown way out of proportion by media outlets attempting to get cheap hits.
This issue is not yet resolved. As you said, there is too little verifiable information. All companies like Microsoft have to walk a line between popular perception ans return on investment. They may have crossed the line. Credible statistics indicate there are more Linux users out there that what one might think. They are a significant, albeit small, part of the PC market. They will not be locked out, but it will be a struggle. The weeks ahead may bring more detail. Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 05, 2015, 10:30:41 AM This issue is not yet resolved. As you said, there is too little verifiable information. All companies like Microsoft have to walk a line between popular perception ans return on investment. They may have crossed the line. The fact that full information on the new OEM licenses is not available does not lend any credibility to your theories. Just to go through each one: Quote MS will give free Windows for machines with secure boot locked.I'm not entirely sure what you are referring to here. MS won't be providing Windows to consumers in this situation. The license applies to how OEM's may use Windows for pre-installation. As camerongray mentions, Windows 8 included a requirement that the device allow secure boot to be disabled for a non-mobile device. Are you suggesting that if somebody has a Windows 8 RT system (which would have secure boot forced on) that they will receive a free update to Windows 10? Well, you are right- because all versions of Windows 7 and 8 are eligible for a free upgrade. But that has nothing to do with Secure Boot. Quote OEM will give one year warranty on machines with secure boot .I am unsure what this means or what you are implicating here. Is that too short? too long? Where is this random thought coming from, exactly? Quote When one OEM is acquired by another, an update will lock secure boot.So if I understand correctly, your "random thought" is that, if, say, HP releases a laptop where they opt to allow the secure boot option to be toggled, and HP is subsequently purchased by Dell, that Dell could create an "update" that will remove the option? Because again these restrictions apply to the preinstallation environment, and what sorts of systems it can be installed on. An Update cannot revise the hardware implementation. Dell, in this case, could technically create a "firmware update" which would revise the original system firmware and remove the feature. But I'm not entirely sure where you are coming from with this suggestion. Why would an OEM do this? There would be zero reason for them to do this. You cannot merely express that because something is possible, it must be considered. That takes us into "Russell's Teapot" territory. Quote A Free Anti-virus will only work if secure boot is locked on.Nothing has ever been preventing this. Free AV programs do not need to meet Microsoft's OEM guidelines. OEM's do. Free AVs could have added a capability that prevented them from working if secure boot was not enabled. The reason Free AVs did not add this feature was not because it was a requirement that they not do so- they didn't do it because there is zero gain for doing so on their end. Companies aren't stupid. If they do something, it's because they think they can make money by doing so. An AV software spending money to have their developers work on a feature that locks their product out from over half of their customer-base is not something any company that wants to last longer would do. Again- it's possible for Free AVs to implement this- but The win10 OEM license changes don't change that scenario- it's been possible all along. Quote Software support subscriptions only for companies the use secure boot.On what planet would it be wise for a software company to only allow companies that use secure boot to pay them for support? Enterprises and companies pay Microsoft for support CONTRACTS. What logic has led you to the "random thought" that Microsoft would decide they only wanted the money from their corporate customers who had secure boot enabled? And like the previous "random thought" in what way will this situation be different given the alleged OEM license revisions? It seems like MS could have imposed this requirement with the release of Windows 8. The reason they did not is because it's basically turning down money from one of their BIGGEST revenue sources. Quote Big company sells ton of PCs with option advertising. Then later locks it.I'm not entirely sure you even know what secure boot is, does, or how it works. Like the first option- how would a company "lock it"? Secure boot is not a feature implemented in windows, it is part of the firmware created by the OEM, which you can't just change remotely. Except for lying to customers and saying "You need this firmware update" to get them to install it, you won't be able to forcibly set secure boot on. Furthermore, secure boot doesn't seem related to advertising at all. How do you imagine such a feature working, and how does disabling Secure Boot change it? Quote Class action against MS for making OEM later lock secure boot. Now you are suggesting that MS will change from requiring that Secure boot be possible to disable, to the now alleged not requiring it be possible to disable it- and then they will require that it be enabled on all systems? What evidence leads you to this conclusion? What would they gain from this approach? Furthermore, this ignores that changes to the OEM license will only affect new systems being released. changes to the OEM license will not require the OEM figure out how to make all their products using that software compatible with the new OEM license since those systems are already deployed. Quote Credible statistics indicate there are more Linux users out there that what one might think. They are a significant, albeit small, part of the PC market. They will not be locked out, but it will be a struggle. If you don't provide a source, it's not "credible". THey will not be locked out. and it will not be a struggle. many Linux distributions already support secure boot. Quote The weeks ahead may bring more detail.Anything to dispel your "random thoughts" will be a relief.I dealt with a Windows 8 locked down laptop trying to downgrade to 7. After taking methods to first of all gain access to the BIOS which was disabled to access via hot key at boot and figuring out how to use the Windows 8 OS to re-enable the BIOS hot key at post that was disabled by manufacturer & microsoft, I was then finally able to make the necessary changes to disable UEFI and install Windows 7 Home Premium to my new laptop. There are pros and cons to UEFI secure boot. For the most part, those of us wanting to run an OS other than what came with a new PC purchase generally figure out how to disable and install what we want. Although Microsoft could have been better at making it not such a pain to disable as for for Windows 8.1 the procedure changed from that of disabling UEFI on Windows 8 and so a online guide stating how to disable it gets you started but with 8.1 Microsoft intentionally changed it up some and so you have to take some extra steps off the path of the online guide for Windows 8 UEFI disable. Had this new laptop purchase for $279.99 bundled with Windows 8 been completely locked down to only Windows 8 or newer OS, I would have just unloaded the laptop close to the price I paid for it new and bought a laptop that came with 7 instead for a larger price tag new or find a refurb for equal to or lesser price. I saw a deal the other day for refurb laptops with Windows 7 for as low as $129.99 although they were just Core 2 Duo systems with small hard drives. I have been testing Windows 10 ( 32 and 64 bit ) and I like it better than Windows 8/8.1. Just not sure if I like it enough to get the free upgrade to 10 from 7 or not... I have to look into the legalities, but I am considering cloning my original windows 7 drive and upgrading the cloned drive to 10 and keeping the original on 7 and with removable hard drive bay on my desktop being able to boot the system with 7 or 10 so i have choices vs it being a 1 way upgrade. Because the drive would not be used on another computer and only used on that same computer by which it is licensed to begin with hopefully it would be as acceptable as dual boot systems in which such as back in the day you could get the upgrade edition of Windows XP and install Windows 98SE on one partition and Windows XP on the other partition and chose to boot 1 or the other, where the Upgrade version of XP was based on the original 98SE license which is still functional on another partition on the same drive in which both are not functional at the same time so it doesnt violate EULA. Just in the case of Windows 10 free upgrade from 7, its a Free upgrade vs buying the Upgrade edition if there was one.Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 05, 2015, 10:30:41 AM Camerongray, t hanks for your post. I respectfully disagree.Care to actually explain why? Solve : The Google Aprile First Joke. What?? |
Answer» Try to search on the above topic and find the truth. What was it? Is it over? Whne can I GET my computer back? HELLO, anybody there? The prank, CALLED "Mic Drop," gave users the option of sending emails through a special send button that - if the person replied - did not show the response. Users could ignore the feature, but some apparently CLICKED in error on the special button instead of the usual buttonSo what? Quote Gmail user and writer Allan Pashby said that because he unknowingly used the Mic Drop feature, he is now unemployed.Google April Fool. And even CBS news mentioned it. Google Prank Backfires. Must be a SLOW news day... Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 01, 2016, 09:23:54 PM So what? It was completely broken, and could activate not only by accident since the button was close to standard buttons but even when making a normal reply. Solve : AT&T Dodges Lawsuit for Unlimited Data Choke.? |
Answer» First reported two weeks ago... AT&T has managed to successfully tap dance around a class action lawsuit filed by customers whose "unlimited" wireless data connections were throttled without AT&T making the restrictions clear. US District Court Judge Edward Chen has told customers suing the telco for its misleading throttling PRACTICES that they can't sue as part of a class action -- because they signed a contract with AT&T locking them into binding arbitration.Similar complaints have been filed earlier for other ISP companies that use the LTE network or otherwise offer fast SPEED and unlimited data plans for smartphone users. What about your smartphone? LTE = a 4G mobile communications standard. "users of the LTE network should see data speeds that are up to 10 times faster than the current 3G network" |

Solve : Microsft wants 1 billion windows 10 things in three years.? |
Answer» FULL TITLED is: Microsoft wants Windows 10 on one billion devices in three years. Some sources call this news. PC World: HTTP://www.pcworld.com/article/2916479/microsoft-wants-windows-10-on-one-billion-devices-in-three-years.html Computer World: http://www.computerworld.com/article/2919104/windows-pcs/where-will-microsoft-find-1-billion-devices-for-windows-10.html ZDNet: http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-windows-10-will-be-on-1-billion-devices-in-two-to-three-years/ The Register (UK) http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/04/30/windows_10_1_billion_devices_good_luck_with_that/ Quote This word 'billion' cannot mean what you think it means My question is: What is the definition of one Billion? Quote My question is: What is the definition of one Billion? = 1,000,000,000 Devices ... not sure if they will reach 1 Billion or not, but giving free upgrades to it from 7 or newer they should get a bunch of people to upgrade over to it. As for myself I would need to run both 7 and 10 so I will probably clone the main drive and put 10 on the clone and be able to before BOOT SWAP drives to have choice of 7 or 10. |

Solve : Google to make Chrome less of a memory hog? |
Answer» Found this interesting. It was one of two reasons why I dont use chrome as my browser of choice was because it seemed to be needy with RAM, consuming more and more the longer its running as the browser. Quote On the desktop side, Google is currently trying to fight memory leaks: “We are profiling Chrome to IMPROVE our start-up speed and proactively fighting memory bloat and memory leaks. For EXAMPLE, this year the first gesture latency and mean input latency has decreased steadily.” http://www.kitguru.net/channel/generaltech/matthew-wilson/google-working-to-fix-chrome-high-ram-usage/Chrome will never be in my arsenal...tried 5 TIMES ...then gave up.The problem with browsers today is their cache policies seem to be trash. A browser cache should not simply bloat until you have to close the browser. It should only keep information in memory that is actually useful. When you have 3GBs of cache information for your web browser being stored in memory for "performance" on a system with 4GB of RAM you NEED to reconsider your assumptions about performance. EDIT: by way of example: I have 3 tabs open in Firefox. It is using 2 Gigabytes of Memory. Why? Because it's storing a crapload of images, text, stylesheets, etc. from PAGES I've visited this session. |

Solve : A giant leap for IBM Research. Untold story? |
Answer» This is news because it is not news. GMR A Giant Leap IBM Research - Best Computer Desk Was this story redacted? It should have been published in March. Earlier your can read this: http://budker.berkeley.edu/Physics141_2013/GMR_Matthew_Melissa.pdf It is a serious PDF with the title: Giant Magnetoresistance Matthew Melissa – Physics 141A – Spring 2013 A Noble prize was given in 2007. See above E document. Here is a story that also is now very old. This gives you the idea that by now there should have been a big breakthrough. http://www.research.ibm.com/research/gmr.html Quote Searching for a useful disk-drive sensor design that would operate at low magnetic fields, Bruce Gurney and colleagues began focusing on the simplest possible arrangement: two magnetic layers separated by a spacer layer CHOSEN to ensure that the coupling between magnetic layers was weak, unlike previously made structures. They also "pinned" in one direction the magnetic orientation of one layer by adding a fourth layer: a strong antiferromagnet. When a weak magnetic field, such as that from a bit on a hard disk, passes beneath such a structure, the magnetic orientation of the unpinned magnetic layer rotates relative to that of the pinned layer, generating a significant change in electrical resistance due to the GMR effect. This structure was named the spin valve. So, either the whole idea tanked... OR ... Is IBM is keeping a big secret? EDIT: For more, search on Gmr A Giant Leap For IBM ResearchDon't know where you got that weird link, but I do know that GMR became the dominant hard-drive-head technology round about the end of 1999, so maybe you missed the revolution? Later technologies such as TMR and PMR have come along since then. Thanks for the input The dead link was in a Google search. Yes. earlier IBM did so work or heads that became standard. But in 2007 there was a big deal about a patent for something that went beyond that technology. In 2014 a low-key video was released about an IBM fellow that was doing some really impressive stuff in the MR research. The IBM GMR means Giant magnetoresistance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_magnetoresistance Quote Giant magnetoresistance (GMR) is a quantum mechanical magnetoresistance effect observed in thin-film structures composed of alternating ferromagnetic and non-magnetic conductive layers. The 2007 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Albert Fert and Peter Grünberg for the discovery of GMR.It would appear the IBM is going to take this in a direction that we do not expect. At first it was hailed as a breakthrough in Hard Drive performance. If and when they make a new announcement, it will be a big thing for the whole industry. I was hoping somebody would give e a clue about what IBM has been doing. To see the video, search on: IBM wants to destroy the hard drive. This is the video given: http://on.aol.com/video/ibm-wants-to-kill-your-hard-drive-518389620 Listen and you hear him say that it goes way past hard drives. It will kill the hard drive forever. No, he does not use that word, but listen carefully. He talks about the potential like nothing else. I am sure I hear him say "...a million times faster than flash." That was six months ago. Time for an update. So, no news from IBM is strange. It looks like maybe it's the "Racetrack Memory" project, which is still just a gleam in the eyes of researchers. There are always such projects. Not all lead to industry-changing technology. |

No matter what OS, PC sales are kind of flat. And I wouldnt expect an OS to boost PC sales. I feel that the market is sort of saturated with systems that people have owned for 5 or 10 years and continue to work. Many people trying out Windows 8 who had a choice in the matter to continue to use their already existing Core 2 Duo with Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7, or buy a new Core i3, i5 or i7 with Windows 8 likely didnt care for 8 and decided to stick with their old computer. I support clients on the side and I have seen many people stretching the life of their desktop and laptop computers because they dont want Windows 8. I point out to them that you can still buy a new computer and get Windows 7, but that the local stores dont sell them and they need to special order them. Those who I support who have bought new systems and bought them with Windows 8 for the most part hate the OS and ask me how they can get features back that they were accustomed to for years with prior windows versions and the easiest solution although not free is for them to spend the money to buy Windows 7 to install to it. People who know that I have been playing with Windows 10 have asked me is it better than 8 or 8.1, and I have to say yes it is, BUT its not Windows 7 or XP. I feel that Windows 10 will be more widely accepted given its better GUI, but Microsoft tarnished the Windows name with 8 and 8.1 causing many to be cautious. When it comes to people getting by with old computers that I support on the side, I have one gentlemen that is very happy with his old Pentium III 1Ghz Dell running Lubuntu on a 20GB HDD. He just surfs the web and does e-mail and doesnt do any gaming beyond simple games like solitaire. I have 3 other people that are still running Pentium 4 systems that are fine with Windows XP Home and Pro SP3, and the only thing I had to do for those systems was install a newer video card and max out the RAM because they like to watch Hulu and Netflix. Many others are still on Core 2 Duo systems and Pentium E5400 type dual -core systems. 2 people have Core 2 Quad systems, and for the AMD customers that I have one older woman has an old AMD K6-2 350Mhz running Windows 98 SE and she doesnt use the internet, she just uses an old version of Microsoft Works and Lotus 123 to keep record keeping on some groups that she belongs to with Lions club, and everyone else is on the internet with Sempron and Athlons single core Athlon XP era to 3 year old Phenom 6 core systems. Everytime I see a client I ask them how its going and if their system needs and upgrades or if they feel it needs to be replaced and more than 90% of the time they are happy with what they have. The other 10% is usually the parents coming to me stating that their old computer wont run the game that their kid wants to run on it such as recently a request if I can help them get Witcher 3 to run on their home computer. When I was given the home computer model since they didnt know what it had for hardware it showed that it only had a Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz and Witcher 3 requires these minimum specs: Intel CPU Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz. AMD CPU Phenom II X4 940. Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 660. AMD GPU Radeon HD 7870. RAM 6GB. OS 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1) DirectX 11. HDD Space 40 GB. I think the only thing really driving anyone needing a new computer these days is if the software they want to run wont run on what they already have; as well as those who trade in or upgrade their computers to stay top of the line with hardware, but many who want to be top of the line build their own systems so the PC manufacturers other than the part manufacturers dont see much sales to gamers. I am going to accept the free Windows 10 upgrade on 1 or 2 of my systems, although I still like Windows XP and 7 the most.Quote I am going to accept the free Windows 10 upgrade on 1 or 2 of my systems, although I still like Windows XP and 7 the most.Me too! Microsoft may have missed an opportunity to please the old customers and upgrade the OS. Maybe they could have made a real good mini VM that would ride on the Windows 7 or 8 kernel. The updates would only be for the low-level stuff. The GUI would still be a virtual XP. Frequent updates to the GUI shell should not be needed. I believe many XP users would have paid a modest fee for a system that was made that way. Or has somebody already done that? If so, MS missed an opportunity. Run Windows XP in a VM I've only seen these, but they don't give all functionality/features back. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/make-windows-8-8-1-look-like-windows-7-xp/ I haven't tried any of these to state whether they are good or junk.Personally I don't understand the fascination with XP. It's like being nostalgic for the Program Manager.Quote from: DaveLembke on May 22, 2015, 08:56:25 AM Instead of telling them to buy machines with Win 7, why aren't you showing them that Win 8.1 is a perfectly good OS? My sister recently bought a new laptop with Win 8.1 and I showed her a few things and installed Classic Shell for her. She doesn't miss her Win 7 laptop at all. Quote from: DaveLembke on May 22, 2015, 08:56:25 AM Those who I support who have bought new systems and bought them with Windows 8 for the most part hate the OS and ask me how they can get features back that they were accustomed to for years with prior windows versions and the easiest solution although not free is for them to spend the money to buy Windows 7 to install to it.What features are missing? The Start menu? There are many replacements for the Start menu out there for those that can't function without one. Quote from: DaveLembke on May 22, 2015, 08:56:25 AM People who know that I have been playing with Windows 10 have asked me is it better than 8 or 8.1, and I have to say yes it is, BUT its not Windows 7 or XP. I feel that Windows 10 will be more widely accepted given its better GUI, but Microsoft tarnished the Windows name with 8 and 8.1 causing many to be cautious.I think Win 10 will be more widely accepted than Win 8.1 but don't really understand why. I have been using it since the FIRST technical preview and consider it to be just OK, nothing to wow me into upgrading any of my machines, Win 7 or Win 8.1. I probably won't upgrade any of my machines to Win 10 but would certainly consider Win 10 for any new builds or purchases. Hopefully, the free upgrade MS will be offering will be available as an ISO that I could do a clean install on a new machine. If it's simply an in-place upgrade via the Store then I'm not really interested. Not a nostalgic need for something old. It is about economics or entertainment. Some believe you help people by making things difficult. So those kind of experts are the ones who tell you to do unusual visual effects and people will love it. My preference is for what is easy for me. Playing with Windows 10 TR, it seems MS has made some adjustments to make the presentation move comfortable. Now I can find the control panel in ten seconds instead of 60 seconds. I like the classic shell. Maybe MS should buy it. When's the last time he was right about anything ? ? Just sayin...Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 22, 2015, 01:47:20 PM ... Playing with Windows 10 TR, it seems MS has made some adjustments to make the presentation move comfortable. Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 22, 2015, 07:48:18 PM Barbecue I could not find it.Don't understand the Barbecue reference but if you right-click on the Start button in either Win 8.1 or Win 10 you get this menu: [attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Now you tell me. I always left click the start menu. The way Gates made it to be. If I wanted to learn new click moves, I would have bought an Apple Mac. Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 22, 2015, 10:14:36 PM Now you tell me. I think the issue is that you want to make it harder. Consider your problem- you want to find the Control Panel. The issue, in terms of getting it done quickly, is that you feel you should be looking for it, and that it should be somewhere easy for you to find. But realistically, we can just tell the OS to find it for us. That is what Start->Search is for, after all. For example, when I want to start Control Panel, It is on the Apps screen. I didn't even know it was there until just now, because I open by: 1. Pressing the Windows Key 2. Typing 'Control' 3. Pressing Enter It takes less than a second for me. Really I do this for every application, I just CHANGE what I am searching for. I've done this since Vista, because it is simply demonstrably faster and more fluent. I'm actually not even entirely clear what the Start Menu in Windows 10 actually improves that makes so many Windows 8 haters flip-flop. The "Apps" screen that replaces the "All Programs" foldout is actually even worse than what Windows 7 or Vista provides, as it's something of a condensed view of the standard, full-screen "Apps" display. I was always under the impression that those who felt the Start Menu was critical were those who USED the All Programs Menu, but now I have no idea. Anybody Remember starting Programs with XP or earlier when you didn't have a desktop shortcut and you couldn't remember the company that made it? You want to start Mr. JellyWorld, but you don't remember that it's made by "Paula Bean Inc." so you have to drill down through all these different program folders and look through all of them, quite annoying!@BC_programmer - Asking people to type things in order to find something on their computer is way too complicated! On my Win 8.1 computer, I don't even need to type "control", by the time I've typed "co", it's already located it. I don't like the search function in Win 10 because it also does a web search. If I want to find the control panel in Win 10 and actually type "control", it doesn't find the control panel but instead finds "Settings". If I type "control panel", it will find control panel on the web, not on my machine. You won't find the Control Panel on a Win 10 computer using the search function. I believe this is because MS wants to eliminate the Control Panel and replace it with Settings. |

Solve : Lenovo has wants MSI's gaming notebooks.? |
Answer» Also reported from other sources. ...there is no such thing as a "high end" MSI product...Period end.I stand by my statement...regardless if Lenovo WANTS to throw money around...or not...Personally I don't think of MSi much differently from other component, PC, or Laptop manufacturers. Like other manufacturers they have "value" oriented systems which don't tend to be lauded for their awesome build quality. Lenovo- who now owns the UBIQUITOUS and generally well-regarded Thinkpad line- also has questionable-quality, value-oriented laptops, one of which I had the misfortune of tinkering with recently- software bloat, poor specifications, and overall poor performance were some of the issues with the system I used, which is no different from the sorts of complaints from MSi's value-oriented systems. Based on some reviews and videos I have seen that cover some of the gaming offerings of MSi, I think they may be a worthy competitor in that domain. In general as with any brand-name the detractors are often the loudest. This goes for laptops, Hard drives, graphics cards, and is hardly specific to computer COMPONENTS, for that matter. Personally stuff marketed for "gaming" always gives me pause. I was recently considering a Lenovo Y50 myself, but the 'edgy' gaming stuff puts me off, but that is just my own preference. Even my mouse- which is marketed as a "gaming" mouse (Logitech G502) made me want to avoid it for that very reason. Coincidentally, last Thursday I ordered a new laptop myself. I was going to mention this in the other thread (Btw, kudos to Geek-9pm for trying to separate this discussion from the other thread!), but my aims were entirely different from the OPs in the other thread so it wouldn't have added much to the discussion. (I basically maxed out a Lenovo T550 Thinkpad on their customization page).I certainly didn't want to come off as one of those blinded brand detractors....my opinion is strictly from personal experience....and many many years...including recently.Quote I certainly didn't want to come off as one of those blinded brand detractors....my opinion is strictly from personal experience....and many many years...including recently. Same here with MSI, although I haven't had to handle a MSI problem in about 7 months now, but the nature of their problems are generally instability problems which when troubleshot swapping out everything leads back to main board having some flaw which causes the hiccup or crash. I have had better luck with Biostar for example where only 1 out of maybe 40 boards had an issue and a quick RMA REPLACEMENT TOOK care of the issue. Sadly I rate MSI just barely above ECS and ASRock above MSI. ECS is the worst I have seen that's out there. Biostar I rate better than ASRock. ASUS and Gigabyte I rate as top of the line, and even the economy ( low cost ) boards and products are good. |

Solve : Blizzard tackles World of Warcraft 'cheats'? |
Answer» Thousands of World of Warcraft accounts have been shut down by Blizzard as it moves to stop people using "bots" to play the game Why penalize someone for being unlucky to be grouped with several horrible useless players? Ever since the latest Druid Nerf, I have exited the game. I left the game for 9 months after Cataclysm destroyed the game that i loved. I got lured back to the game by friends in contact with me by FACEBOOK who promoted how much fun a deathknight was. I liked the deathknight and played that character and they nerfed the deathknight. I then was pointed towards a druid being somewhat powerful in ability to play all 3 roles ( tank, heal, dps ) all on the fly switching forms and LOVED my Resto Druid, and then they decided to cripple my Resto Druid and no other character types are luring me back to the game, and most of my friends said C YA to Blizzard with WoW after also not liking the direction the game has gone in its 10 year evolution. Its been 3 months now since I have paid to play the game. I have serious doubts that I will be going back to the game because the fun has been pulled out of the game and all but 2 friends are gone from the game. I am in a sort of limbo right now with gaming. I have thousands of games I could play, but most arent what wow was. These days I have been playing short plays of steam games that I get cheap on Humble Bundle deals etc, and hearth with some friends who left wow, although hearth has me kind of angered with some of the dynamics of the game that is retarded such as if you have a card/character that your playing with 6 dmg and 7 hp and you strike an opponent card/character that is 4 dmg and 1 hp, you should not have your card/character dead along with their card, it should be that 4 dmg was detracted from your 7hp leaving you with 3hp and card/character still in play. But thats not how it works. The only good thing is that your shown a skull symbol if the move to be before finalizing the move will = death for the card/character at play, so you know that your going to lose that as a 1 for 1 no matter what hp your card has which is so so stupid! Additionally there are cards that make the game not fun such as the druid has a single card that can be played that resets both you and them to 30 health which is max health and your limited to 30 cards and so they can play that at the end of the game and now he or she is back to full health and you have no more cards to play in which you lose due to fatigue death since you need to play a card or own cards and pass to avoid fatigue damage.I always used my +30 staff of destruction against the troll wizards when they attacked my duratanium Knights. This was great to prevent them advancing through my murder hole puzzles while simultaneously providing an exceptional defense against Keebler Elf units. My only weakness is Snap-Crackle-Pop, which was added in the latest Kelogg's (tm) DLC. I also made up everything I just said and have never played WoW.Even if say you didn't ...which Kellogs product did you use ? ?...There's a bunch of them...Quote from: patio on May 17, 2015, 02:31:26 PM Even if say you didn't ...which Kellogs product did you use ? ?...There's a bunch of them... Well for a while I had Snap's Hat equipped so I could take advantage of the resistance to elf magic, but I ended up swapping it out for the Rooster Hat, which provided a +10 attack that I utilized when I bought the Mini-wheats machine gun. I tended to shoot frosted side first at foes but I found that this only worked on older enemies, and the younger enemies took more damage from the unfrosted side. There was also an embarassing period where I used the Corn Flakes Rooster Claw to give me a +10 to my Luck stat, however I found that a significant downside of the Corn Flakes Rooster Claw was that the Nutra-grain potions were only half as effective, because the Rooster Claw, while boosting my luck stat, also decreased my Healing stat. Also there was a brief period after the DLC's initial launch where it was discovered that the Toucan Sam mob in the new Froot-Loops Jungle biome dropped over a million experience if you were using the Mueslix Staff. This was incredibly aggravating as I had chosen a race which didn't have a nose, so I couldn't follow it to find Toucan Sams.I woulda used my old standby....Special K....undefeated from what i gather. http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/colon-blow/n9822 Super Colon Blow allows characters to level fast above others. |

Solve : Microsoft to stop producing Windows versions? |
Answer» Windows 10 is going to be the last major revision of the operating system. This will make it fun to support ... my guess is that there will still be some sort of indication as to at what level of patching the OS is at. Hoping they will still have service packs to create slipstreams so that you can perform an install of Windows and have a leap ahead right at the get go to a later version from the original build vs requiring say thousands of updates after clean install years from now. Can you imagine getting your new PC and the first thing you have to do is install 9000 updates. It would be ridiculous. This is pure speculation but I believe Microsoft/Windows is heading in the direction of what we see in the Chrome OS/Android and iOS. They NEED every Windows user on the newest version of Windows. They have already initiated that process by releasing Windows 10 for free just like Android and iOS updates are free. Remember APPLE originally charged a fee for each new OS until Google came along and did it for free. Microsoft has to compete with Android and Apple so future versions of Windows will now be free. If MS does it right the Windows App Store will become relevant and begin to generate real revenue. They can then compete with iTunes and Google Play. As far as future updates? They will have to identify them somehow. It will probably be similar to or in between what we see with Android or iOS.They stated the same thing after the release of Vista...remember ? ?Sort of. It's different today though with mobile sales being so dominant.Maybe for two years they will not launch new os version. |

Solve : 'Raleigh Geeks' ordered to pay $455,000? |

Answer» From North Carolina. RALEIGH (WTVD) --Good. This is why I believe that there should be some sort of certification scheme that computer repair companies turning over $x a year should be required to go through. There are far too many incompetent people out there fixing PCs - They get into the mindset of "I upgraded RAM once, therefore I can fix ANYTHING" and then fix stuff by guessing or cobbling together stuff they find online with little understanding of what they are actually doing. Not to mention the ones out there who are BLATANTLY scammers.A few states require certification for local repair firms. Sad to say, it is not yet widespread. Electrical: Yes. Electronic: No. Example: To work on the office AIR condition system, certification is required. But to install a LAN in your office, no training needed. |

Solve : Microsft to buy AMD rumors return.? |
Answer» This rumor has been around for months. But it is back again and seems to be persistent. Enough so that the AMD stock price jumped up a lot. Sunnyvale-based SEMICONDUCTOR maker Advanced Micro Devices is in serious discussions to be acquired by Microsoft, and it's also possible that Santa Clara-based Intel might enter the fray to gain control of AMD, according to a report posted Friday by Fudzilla.Link below: Posted Friday by Fudzilla. Quote In case that Microsoft does acquire AMD, as we suggested a few months back, it will control the DEVELOPMENT of the next generation console chip for its FUTURE Xbox and it would be able to create decent GPUs to promote its DirectX 12 and beyond. Of course Microsoft would have to compete with Nvidia. Linux fans of AMD GPUs would not be too happy about it, although Redmond has been getting more open source friendly lately. What would this mean for you? Maybe there may not be more new GPU chips from AMD. Microsoft wants game players to buy the Xbox. The rumors also mention Intel. Can you imagine Intel taking over AMD? Quote Can you imagine Intel taking over AMD? That would be a worse case scenario. If Intel has no competition, prices are likely to rise for what otherwise would be cheaper due to competition. With no competition Intel could set it to any price tag amount and its take it or leave it. If Microsoft were to buy AMD, that would be an interesting scenario. All the years of Microsoft and Intel working together, and now Intel is on the sidelines in the position that AMD once was. Microsoft with their ability to correct for years of poor or flawed to not perform as expected but still functional core designs. But if Microsoft plans on leaving the PC market and using AMD solely for its VIDEO game CONSOLES only, then Intel would own the PC market. Through all of this my main concern is that Intel has a competitor so that there is someone to keep prices in check vs take it or leave it type of pricing with no competition. The only good thing about if a take it or leave it situation ever happened is that for the next few years most of the people who already have systems that are somewhat new could get by without buying newer systems at higher price tags, but as those already existing systems grow old and unable to keep up with modern computing demands, eventually its inevitable that your then stuck paying the exaggerated margin price tags. Their business would be .... well we will get you now.... or we will get you later..... but we have you right where we want you in the end! |

Solve : Reddit, under Ellen Pao, launches harassment crackdown? |
Answer» Social news site Reddit has launched an anti-harassment policy that allows it to ban users who bully others. It's not like the new CEO is much better. He's said a lot of the exact same things that she did; suddenly the exact same things being said by this guy get responses of "What a reasonable person!" I think the immediate acceptance of what he is saying is because he was the CEO who helped Reddit to be what it is (or was). Ellen Pao came along and pretty much took the community in the opposite direction. She was shaping the website into her vision instead of letting the community guide the way. As for commercialization. Reddit admins can't let the community make that decision. There are shareholders/investors involved and they demand revenue growth or they take their money elsewhere. I'm sure there is a happy medium to be found but it might get a little bumpy trying to get there. |

Solve : Comcast, T-Mobile Win Ookla Fastest? |

Answer» PC Magazine says 'COMCAST, T-Mobile Win Ookla Fastest .' Ookla, the WORLD's largest operator of crowd-sourced speed tests, runs more than 5 million tests a day worldwide, and it drew from six months' worth of its database to see which is the fastest over all 50 states and more than 100 U.S. metro areas.(Disclosure: Ookla is owned by Ziff Davis. which also owns PCMag.com.) Here are two other sources: T-Mobile named ‘Fastest Mobile Network’ by Speedtest app maker Ookla Quote T-Mobile has poured money into LTE network upgrades recently, and the WORK shows. Its “wideband LTE,” which improves LTE SPEEDS without requiring new handsets, now covers 185 markets. The carrier is strongest in the urban Northeast and in Western cities. America hates Comcast but it’s the fastest nationwide ISP we have. Quote Comcast is not a well loved company in the United States. Somewhat paradoxically, however, Comcast also happens to be the ISP with the fastest OVERALL speeds of any nationwide provider in the country. SpeedTest.net this week announced its first-ever awards for ISPs in the U.S. and it found that Comcast’s Xfinity was the fastest overall service with an average download speed of just under 105Mbps and an average upload speed of 12.7Mbps.I never get that kind of speed. |

Solve : Spotify says sorry after privacy policy anger? |
Answer» Spotify chief executive Daniel Ek has apologised following anger over the MUSIC streaming service's new data privacy policy. Spotify had said in response that the changes to its privacy policy would help it "tailor improved user experience".which means that they might not be exactly looking at peoples info personally, but that there are programs that have logic that use the otherwise personal info which is just as bad as someone looking at it without permission. I havent used spotify in a while. When I first saw an ad for it on facebook a while back I checked it out and it was a neat new music site. But I found that it was somewhat lacking, so I left it. It had some music that was better quality than that of what was on youtube in some cases, but the selections of music seemed very limited such as Amaranthe they only had most popular songs of theirs and not full albums to select the lesser known or heard songs. This might be to keep people from being able to acquire a full album through them for free. But I ended up discovering Amaranthe on spotify and then went out and bought their CD at a Comic Store that has a DWINDLING NUMBER of music selections since no record stores exist anymore and Walmart doesnt carry music like Amaranthe and if they did, the slightest controversal lyric would be altered by the censorship police. I guess I am glad I left spotify now that I read this. They were linked to my Facebook account and that has a whole bunch of false information anyways so that no one could steal my identity and run with factual information. I still get a laugh each year when my birthday comes around on Facebook and family members who should know better fall into the trap of wishing me a happy birthday on my wrong birthday and it clearly shows that they are clueless about my real birthday. BTW...Happy Birthday. LOL |

Solve : Windows 10 Updates Causing Problems.? |
Answer» Full title is: For the layman, Windows Explorer is not to be confused with the Internet Explorer web browser. Windows Explorer is the core file navigation system fundamental to using Windows. Without it you’re in big trouble.A fix coming real soon. They've "Fixed" Explorer for every build for the last month or so. And yet it STILL seems to forget how to show the Start Menu. Say what one will about the Windows 8/8.1 Start Screen, but at least when I press the Start Button or Windows Key there, it will actually do something!I think they will fix everything before the actual date for upgrade.Quote from: halstead on July 28, 2015, 03:39:08 AM I think they will fix everything before the actual date for upgrade. The latest Build available to insiders is the same build that will be made available on Wednesday.Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 27, 2015, 11:34:11 PM They've "Fixed" Explorer for every build for the last month or so. And yet it still seems to forget how to show the Start Menu. Are people having problems? Quote from: Salmon Trout on July 28, 2015, 10:59:43 AM Are people having problems? Yes. occasionally on my other system (which has Win10) The start button will stop doing anything. It will blink to another COLOUR when I click it, but nothing happens. Windows key? Nothing happens. I think Windows key combinations kept working, though can't recall. Sometimes I have to reboot (with task manager) more than once to fix it, also. Charitably, at least it seems to happen less frequently than it did a few builds ago, but it still occurs. Haven't noticed a pattern in when it actually happens. As I understand it has something to do with how the Start Menu itself is a separate executable. (allegedly)On my Dell Latitude D830 laptop I am running Windows 10 Pro build 10240 (32 bit) with all updates to date and when I go tap-tap-tap on the Windows key the Start menu comes and goes as fast as I can tap with no faltering or skips, likewise with left mouse clicks on the Start button. It's a bit sluggish responding on RDP which made me think I had this problem when I read the above a few minutes ago. But using the machine directly it's as responsive as I could wish. It's a bit sluggish responding on RDP which made me think I had this problem when I read the above a few minutes ago. But using the machine directly it's as responsive as I could wish. yes that is usually how it works for me as well, it's just occasionally that the start button appears to "die", but doing it at all is still more times then I've had it happen with other Windows versions. Acceptable (since it was a Beta/preview) but if 10240 is the same build that will be pushed tomorrow then I feel there may be lingering quality considerations. Though I don't intend on upgrading either of my main systems (laptop and desktop) I have my older desktop which I already have running Mint 17 and Windows 10 which I don't plan to change, and I have a "budget build" I made a few weeks ago running Windows 8.1 that I might go ahead and upgrade as well; Though it seems I'll have to clean install since it is not showing a prompt to upgrade- may be a result of using a MSDN license for 8.1. Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 27, 2015, 11:34:11 PM Say what one will about the Windows 8/8.1 Start Screen, but at least when I press the Start Button or Windows Key there, it will actually do something! I don't have that problem but the "Say what one will about the Windows 8/8.1 Start Screen" stands out to me. I never used the Win 8.1 Start Menu and I had pretty much forgotten it even existed but now I want it back so I can forget about it again. No, I don't like the new "Start" menu. With Windows 8-8.1 I tweaked a few things and was happily on my way. Thanks for the free OS but since I'll have to work on getting rid of a few things and, hopefully, bring a few things back it doesn't feel free. I have adapted to all of the previous Windows and ended up liking them a lot. I don't have a great feeling about #10 though... I haven't even opened Microsoft Edge yet because I feel I'll just be disappointed. Is there any encouraging words on the new browser? Should I just leave it alone or go ahead and figure it out?Quote from: evilfantasy on July 31, 2015, 12:22:41 AM I don't have that problem but the "Say what one will about the Windows 8/8.1 Start Screen" stands out to me. No, I don't like the new "Start" menu. Not sure why you say this "... Win 8.1 Start Menu and I had pretty much forgotten it even existed but now I want it back so I can forget about it again." but you can configure Win 10 to use the same Start screen as Win 8, go to Settings->Personalization->Start and enable "Use Start full screen". As far as Edge, is pretty stripped down and really can't compete with any of the other browsers out there. It doesn't support any addins yet so you can't install an AD blocker or anything like that. I use FireFox on my Win 10 VMs.Quote from: evilfantasy on July 31, 2015, 12:22:41 AM I have adapted to all of the previous Windows and ended up liking them a lot. I don't have a great feeling about #10 though...That is what I find so strange about Windows 10. It is the first Windows OS that I cannot really think of much to say that is positive. Compared to Windows 8.1 it ends up with "negative points" because of all changes I find negative. Supposedly they are planning a Service Release or something next month. Maybe that will address some of the issues I've seen/had. But it is very disillusioning as I now find myself on the opposite side of the fence, so to speak. That isn't to suggest it doesn't have positive points. I mean it's certainly usable, it's free, and as far as I can tell pretty much any desktop application still runs on it, so it's more a question of whether what it provides is worth switching from your current OS. Quote I haven't even opened Microsoft Edge yet because I feel I'll just be disappointed. Is there any encouraging words on the new browser? Should I just leave it alone or go ahead and figure it out? It's OK. Probably better than IE in some respects. The main issue I have with Edge is that it's one of their "new" Universal "Apps" What this means is that it doesn't actually have an executable and runs inside explorer.exe, I'm not a fan of that whole model because it seems like it could be exploited to hide malware once malware authors figure it out. (Though perhaps you'd be more qualified in that area ). I've seen some articles about Windows 10 changing something such that browsers cannot automatically change what the default browser is. Personally I don't mind this, as I don't like how browsers constantly ask that anyway, and I had no issue switching to Firefox as the default. Quote from: strollin on July 31, 2015, 05:19:24 AM Not sure why you say this "... Win 8.1 Start Menu and I had pretty much forgotten it even existed but now I want it back so I can forget about it again." but you can configure Win 10 to use the same Start screen as Win 8, go to Settings->Personalization->Start and enable "Use Start full screen". Interestingly, This has been suggested to me repeatedly. I think the people suggesting it have either not used the setting or have not used the Windows 8 start screen much, because the full-screen Start Menu behaves quite differently from the Windows 8/8.1 Start Screen. Search Results appear on the opposite side of the screen, the power button is moved from the upper-right to the lower-left, and the profile button is moved into a foldout that appears to be effectively the left pane of the Start Menu expanded to full height. "All Apps" in Windows 8 was pretty silly, since it filled the screen with a whole bunch of applications. Windows 10 keeps those entries the same, large size, but puts them in an area with limited horizontal space, sorted by letter. I don't think this really works for those who actually used the Win7 All Programs Menu, as the reason that was likely appealing was because you could see a number of entries at a time, whereas with Win10's All Apps there is going to be far more scrolling and there is significantly more dead space. One could argue that it is a Start Screen, but it is most certainly not anything like Windows 8's beyond a surface-level comparison. On the bright side, Windows Key+ Typing usually works the same as before, if the Start Screen/Menu decides to show up. It seems that in some ways what they have done is create a sort of hybrid between the Windows 7 Start Menu and the Windows 8 Start Screen that has succeeded in, at least to some extent, finding detractors from users of both. One of the negative changes that I cannot even think of an explanation for is reducing the customization options. For a "Theme" you can select a background colour and an accent colour, and that is pretty much it- That is all I could find, anyway. It seems strange that the Windows version they have tagged "The Best Windows Ever" (again) has effectively removed so many customization options. Really this removal of options started in Windows Vista as customization options slowly started to get removed. Windows Vista removed the full "Themes" concept, for example- whereas XP had several different themes (Default, Olive, Silver) Vista had just Aero; Windows 7 only used Aero as well, and Windows 8 stripped down the "Advanced Appearance options" dialog to a few options in the personalization options. Windows 10 has removed it entirely, as far as I can tell. Arguably my biggest issue is their focus on "Universal Apps" since Windows 8, which they are now really pushing hard. A silly name, since they will only run on Windows anyway, and only newer versions. I actually investigated the feasibility of being able to create some ports of our software to work as Windows 8/Universal Apps, since some of our software is run on Windows 8 tablets and it would be nice if we didn't have to require the Pro versions to run our standard desktop programs on them. That was interesting. It seems the development model is oriented around development on Smartphones. In that context, the limitations make sense- for example, due to trust it MAKES sense that a smartphone program might not be allowed to include and use arbitrary libraries. In my case, I needed a library for accessing Postgres Databases, as well as one for interfacing directly with our server software. The odd thing is that this is all not allowed. As far as I can tell it is impossible to create a "Modern UI/Universal" style program that has similar capabilities and underlying architecture to a desktop program but presents it with the new UI; the entire thing needs to be rebuilt. Really the only external interfacing you can do is with "Web services"; so for example in order for the tablet idea to work it would be necessary to create a "Web service" that effectively creates a whole new protocol for interacting with postgres and the server protocol. Seems very strange. Makes sense for Smartphones, again- but not so much for applications intended to run on the desktop. I'll probably have to give it an honest go again this weekend, it may be a case of me not understanding it and thinking it is crap as a result, as that has certainly happened before.Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 31, 2015, 06:02:00 AM The main issue I have with Edge is that it's one of their "new" Universal "Apps" What this means is that it doesn't actually have an executable and runs inside explorer.exe, One of the first things I did was find the Edge folder to see what was in it. I was confused for a minute. It does have an .exe but it doesn't have a desktop shortcut like a normal browser. I finally just assumed that it is actually an app and that ended my curiosity. I never liked the IE, Chrome or Firefox apps so unless I somehow accidentally Open Edge I won't be opening it. I'm with you and have been saying for a while. The cross-platform single OS that MS is obviously wanting might be the hardest task ever. They aren't wanting or needing to build a cross-platform mobile environment because they also want the Windows 10 OS to be on that same platform. That will be an industry wide change and there is not enough incentive at this point for the worlds biggest software developers/distributes to change everything. It might actually be easier for MS to launch a whole new cross-platform OS for home/business users that need it but also keep developing the current desktop environment for the billions of users they already have.Oh YEA I forgot to mention I also agree about the lack of Desktop UI customization. I have looked a few times and it appears they have decided that those features aren't important. My flat screen TV is my second monitor and I can't even adjust the display setting on it so it looks bad and is hard to navigate. |

Solve : Cisco And Apple: Not-So-Strange? |
Answer» Forbes published a Post WRITTEN by John Fruehe. What this collaboration will bring is still vague, but there are clearly areas where the two companies can work together to make the experience better for the end USER. PATRICK Moorhead, principal analyst of Moor Insights & Strategy was quoted in The New York Times saying, “All this makes perfect sense to me” because, on the surface, it appears to be a win-win for both companiesThis story he refers to also found in: Apple Press Info.Info. Somebody please explain what it really is. Read into it whatever you want Geek...Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 01, 2015, 12:18:50 PM Somebody please explain what it really is. Of the top of my head I would think it means Apple has suddenly acquired a huge chunk of corporate clients for hardware sales and Cisco has suddenly acquired a huge chunk of clients for mobile/hardware sales. Win + Win = Makes perfect sense. Apple isn't known for sharing though and Cisco is well established without Apple so it may GET interesting. Google is getting aggressive in going after Microsoft in the office and CLOUD markets. Apple pretty much guaranteed that they are also a huge player simply because Cisco is already a dominate force in corporate networking. |

Solve : Battle of the Latest Streamers! Apple vs. Amazon and Roku? |
Answer» APPLE and Amazon have announced new video streaming devices and services. And what about Rouku and Nvidia Shield? This is going to be fun for the WHOLE family! Sorty source Title: Roku 4 vs. Apple TV vs. Amazon Fire TV vs. Nvidia Shield: Battle of the Latest Streamers! (October 17, 2015) Story from Day Harald. Quote The Roku 4 triumphs in the fact that it can handle 4K Ultra HD videos and support frame rates up to 60fps. This is quite an impressive feature right now. You will notice that most of the 4K TV sets can support 60fps due to the presence of an HDMI 2.0 port. Quote Nvidia Shield, on the other hand has an Nvidia Tegra X1 processor w/256-core Maxwell GPU, uses Android TV OS and comes with 3GB of memory. Output resolutions and connectivity features are same as Amazon FireIs that a type? 256 core? It's not a 256-core processor but a 256-core GPU - not really "cores" as such but that's how graphics cards are made up, they have a large amount of "cores". A typical high-end card could have 2000 or more. Thanks for the clarification. So.. this leads to the question, Why even have a CPU? Why not just let the GPUs do the work? Oops. That would be off topic. Sorry. Broadly speaking, GPUs are designed for one thing, CPUs are more general-purpose. GPUs can't run an operating system, they can be used to display graphics and to accelerate some tasks. Before you mention it - yes, GPU computing does exist, but the uses for it are quite specific, you can't just throw, SAY, an operating system, media player, or word processor at a GPU and say "process that" - it doesn't work that way. |

Solve : How to save $500 on Dell 5000 laptop? |
Answer» This is news to me. I found it during a search for good deals on Dell laptops. Extrem TECH web site has a promo code that they say will get you $500 of a new Dell 14 or 15 inch 5000 laptop. The laptop is loaded with the stuff people want. It is both a touchscreen and a keyboard thing. Here is the link to the web site. Dell Inspiron 15 5000 touchscreen laptop for $330 Quote Normally, this configuration retails for about 850 bucks, but Dell is selling it directly on its online store for $379.99 right now. Better yet, you can use COUPON code “H94WP3J8BQJ49T” in your shopping cart, and save an additional $50. And since shipping is free, you’re only paying $329.99 for this superb laptop. Moderator: If this is not news, move it somewhere. No, I do NOT work for Dell. Anybody please check this out to see if it is true or not.Quote Normally, this configuration retails for about 850 bucks, but Dell is selling it directly on its online store for $379.99 right now. Better yet, you can use coupon code “H94WP3J8BQJ49T” in your shopping cart, and save an additional $50. And since shipping is free, you’re only paying $329.99 for this superb laptop. Looks like a $50 savings vs $500 $50 is nothing special I took the hook at $500 until I saw the typo, thought maybe they were cleaning out an excess of higher end Dells at a bargain price I am sorry I posed that. I repeant for posting an link that was not updated by the author. My bad. At one time Dell did have an offer for that configuration. They the sold out. How do you sell out of something you still have? The Dell 5000 convertible laptop is still being advertised for sale. Just DIFFERENT configurations. The sale model was a i3 Intel, not the i5 or i7. Is it that had to get more i3 chips? Other deep discounts and just now dried up. This might be due to economic pressures now in Europe and Japan. The US dollar is moving ahead, so there is a disparity that favors price increases in the USA. Don't ask me to explain that, somebody else said that. Deep discounts will not come back until early 2016. Someday else said that. Again, I apologize for posting materiel that became out of date. I stumped across this while looking for deals on Dell laptops. And like you say, the current discounts are not much. Whether Dell or Acer or any other major maker. Quote Deep discounts will not come back until early 2016. Someday else said that. I always shop for over the counter computer or online order computer purchases around Black Friday ( Christmas ) sales. However the last 2 years of Black Friday tech sales weren't that impressive. Last year I picked up 4 qty of 16GB thumb drives for $4.99 each that were PNY brand that were otherwise like $8.99 at staples. The flyer brought me in there with that deal, but nothing else that they had was a bargain, and I didnt drive out of my way to get them on any special trip because its between work and home. About 3 years ago I picked up a normally $349.99 ASUS Laptop for $279.99 which I felt was worth it at that price tag, however its not a top of the line laptop as for it only has a Celeron 1000M 1.8Ghz but it ACTUALLY runs games better than the 2009 model Toshiba Satellite that I had prior with Athlon II M300 2.0Ghz due to more modern GPU. Additionally stores like BestBuy had a laptop for $199.99 and people camped outside the store over night to run in and GRAB those. I personally value my warm bed and sleep far greater than spending all night outside of a store in 20 F to walk in and try to save $100 on a low end laptop, and sleep the rest of my day away or be fatigued. The worst part was that the laptops advertised to bait and bring people in, the store only had 2 of them, so there were lots of angry people from what i was told by a guy I know who works there. People wanted rain checks on them and they were while supplies last only. While supplies last is a marketing trick to get you there, bait you with that carrot and say oops sorry we only had 2 carrots and the mob of 200 people was ..ahem.. unexpected, and since your already here why dont we sell you something else instead since you wanted one of those anyways and we have other models with far lesser savings. For what its worth. Here is a review of current top Laptops and prices: The 12 best laptops you can buy in 2015 Also for UK: Best budget tablets 2015 UK - PC Advisor Note that 1 British Pound equals 1.52 US Dollar. Quote The first thing that you need to get your head around is that for less than £200 you’re not going to get a tablet that is going to compete with the iPadSo that would be $304 on this side of the pond. |

Solve : 'Worthless' new Credit Cards with Chips.? |
Answer» Major sources s blast the new credit cards in the USA. Shopper opens her purse and removes some cards. One cord falls into a very small crack in the POS counter top. It store employees can not open the counter until later. Then when the shoppe comes back later they tell her it was not found. (The really did happen here recently to two Walmart shoppers.) But how would this situation be any different using the old approach? Again, my understanding of the current magnetic swipe Credit Card is the cardholder signs the receipt if it is over a certain dollar amount. Any "checks" here would depend on the clerk's studiousness, whether the cardholder had signed the back of the card, wether the clerk bothers to look at it, etc. The majority of the time I don't think anybody bothers. So the situation is the same. But in both scenarios, there isn't a huge issue- once you lose a card, you report it lost or stolen and you are not liable for any uses of the card that go through after that. (And usually in cases of fraud you aren't liable either). In addition the to PIN question, there are some other tings about the system. Credit card fraud is widespread. To what extent the consumer is protected has yet to be proven. Herb Weisbaum , ConsumerMan for msnbc.com contributor has some a long rank about how hackers criminals could steal a lot of cash from your ATM account and get away underacted. I will not repeat what he sad, but he claims the crooks already do it and the new chip does not stop them. This is link to his site. http://www.consumerman.com/ He says: Quote The shift to chip cards is an important step in combating fraud, but experts agree that chip cards are not going to make card fraud go away. Fraudsters will still try to make money by stealing card data, and you’ll still need to protect yourself by taking some BASIC precautions:Many consumers will still be using the PIN for some time.Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 16, 2015, 11:32:37 PM To what extent the consumer is protected has yet to be proven. The "extent the consumer is protected" is described in the documents we receive from the bank/Credit Card company. The ones that list their liability and the consumer's liability. Quote Herb Weisbaum , ConsumerMan for msnbc.com contributor has some a long rant about how hackers criminals could steal a lot of cash from your ATM account and get away underacted. And the liability would be with the credit card company, the responsible merchants, or the bank. Unless the United States has far more ridiculous contractual obligations between the bank and account holders than I thought. Yet another set of ARTICLES freaking out because something changed. We've had chip (and PIN) based cards in the UK for for over 9 years now and they are so much more secure than magnetic stripes - A magnetic stripe can be easily cloned, a chip can't be. It's a bit ridiculous that the US system won't use PINs since that is one of the great things about the chip technologiy.Quote It's a bit ridiculous that the US system won't use PINs since that is one of the great things about the chip technologiy. The only sort of pin we have to use is with online purchases where they request the 3 or 4 digit pin on the back of your card. Im really surprised that they havent gone the route of the digital electrnic authenticator keys such as those that PayPal and Blizzard use to secure account access where a 6 digit key code is always changing at timed intervals + a pin required by you which is usually the password that goes along with their use. You would need physical access to the card device to generate the authenticator code + know what the password/passcode pin is to use it. Only drawback to this is that the merchants cant sit on a number and process it later as well as they wouldnt be able to store your payment info as for the next purchase you make would also require the device to spit out the key code.Quote from: camerongray on October 17, 2015, 05:24:07 AM Yet another set of articles freaking out because something changed.God forbid they should ever adopt the metric system. I've been using my cards with chips for quite some time with no problems but I still have to enter my PIN. A card without a pin is just like cash. The US "Customary" (don't say Imperial!) units have been derived from the metric system since the 19th century. 1 yard was 3600/3937 metres from 1893 to 1959 when it was defined by international agreement as (exactly) 0.9144 metres. |

Solve : The FCC's plan to lock down WiFi routers? |
Answer» Yes, they do have such a plan. They do not want you to FLASH the firmware. The extra capabilities can sometimes be unlocked through software updates issued by the manufacturer, or by software made by third PARTIES. Lots of users INSTALL open source firmware on routers to get a better user interface and better functionality than what is provided by the vendor, and the wording of the FCC’s proposal has some worried that such software will effectively be outlawed.Comments? |
