| 1601. | Solve : Major Cyber Attack in USA? |
| Answer» Major news outlets in the USA reports a huge Cyber attack. The data flood came from tens of millions of different Internet-connected machines — including increasingly popular but HIGHLY insecure household devices such as web-connected cameras. It was an onslaught whose global shifts suggested a sophisticated attacker, though Dyn said it had neither suspect nor motive. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-cyber-idUSKCN12L1ME Quote The attacks struck Twitter, Paypal, Spotify and other customers of an infrastructure company in New Hampshire called Dyn, which acts as a SWITCHBOARD for internet traffichttps://krebsonsecurity.com/2016/10/ddos-on-dyn-impacts-twitter-spotify-reddit/ The DDoS perpetrators said this was just a test run and the real and next attack is knocking out the RUSSIAN government. Now that, if true and it likely is very SCARY for the overall internet SECURITY. | |
| 1602. | Solve : New Legal Netflix Donload? |
| Answer» Finally! NETFLIX users can now download some shows and movies to watch offline. The features is available for phones and tablets on Android 4.4.2 or higher and iOS 8 and above, by updating the Netflix app, the company said in a statement. Popular shows like "Narcos," "Stranger Things," "Breaking Bad," and "Blacklist" are available for download, as are films such as "Spotlight," "Limitless, ..Too bad portable device only for offline viewing. Not available for my laptop for example which I travel with and play offline games and downloaded podcasts etc. I've been using https://www.playon.tv/playlater for several years to download movies from Netflix, Amazon and other websites. Not perfect but gets the job done. It saves the movie as a DRM free MP4 that I can copy to my phone, laptop, server or wherever. It puts a notice into the video that says it was recorded by me (with my name) in order to identify it as something for my sole use and keep me from trying to sell the copy or upload it to Pirate Bay or somewhere like that. One-time $40 purchase price, no ongoing subscription cost (other than for Netflix, Hulu or other streaming service). From the link in my first post above- Quote The features is available for phones and tablets on Android 4.4.2 or higher and iOS 8 and above, by updating the Netflix app, the company said in a statement. Popular shows like "Narcos," "Stranger Things," "Breaking Bad," and "Blacklist" are available for download, as are films such as "Spotlight," "Limitless," and "Burn After Reading."Would it work by running Android 4.2 on an EMULATOR with Windows? Just asking. Quote Would it work by running Android 4.2 on an emulator with Windows? Might work with Andyroid emulator. Ive used andyroid to play games that only are MADE for android to play on desktop and the games play flawless. But there is a difference between a card game such as Pyramid Solitaire and a movie playing with refresh rates etc. I havent seen any pixel lag in the card game, but it might be noticeable in a media player with audio/video sync etc as well with mouths moving out of sync of sound etc if the video playback lags etc. http://www.andyroid.net/I downloaded and installed Andy from androyd.net (it's actually a VM that runs in VMWare player). I then installed Netflix from the Play store but when I TRY to play a video, it just gives me a spinning circle and NEVER starts playing the video. | |
| 1603. | Solve : Device Could Let Thieves Get In Your Car in Seconds? |
| Answer» From NBC News: The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, an auto industry ASSOCIATION, told NBC News that "protecting vehicle access and security continue to be top priorities" and that "automakers have been working on multiple fronts" to address security and enhance it.My car doesn't use a FOB! I have to use a key to open the door and turn the ignition.2016 Hyundia Elantra also still uses a key to start it. No FOB and push button start. I did drive a Nissan a few years ago that was push button start. I personally like the feel of a key turn vs push button. I was watching a video online that showed how thieves were ripping off modern cars by swapping computers. 60 Seconds to swap out the computer and drive off with someone elses vehicle using a computer from another car. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBr5G_e4av4No news here... 6 MONTHS or less when a new security feature is developed there's a crack to it... | 1604. | Solve : Windows 10 ARM to run x86 programs? |
| Answer» Microsoft reveals ARM version of Windows 10 that runs x86 software through emulation Posted 08 December 2016 18:19 CET by Jan Willem Aldershoff The announcement was made during Intel Developers Conference in Shenzhen where Microsoft today will demonstrate an x86 version of Adobe’s Photoshop running on an ARM CPU POWERED device. Running Windows 10 on ARM CPUs should make very energy efficient ARM powered laptops possible that can run longer on a single charge than currently possible with x86 based laptops The basic story had ALREADY been announced earlier, but this new INFO gave the specific details. To wit, the Windows 10 runs on a new and upcoming Qualcomm SnapDragon chip. Source: http://www.myce.com/news/microsoft-reveals-arm-version-windows-10-runs-x86-software-emulation-81054/ So, this is of no help to users who already have current ARM chips. Only QualComm chips will be able to do those features as of now... However i predict once users get to see the convienence other chip makers will line up at Ms's door...Patio, you said it! Look at this: (just 3 days ago) http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/12/07/qualcomm_centriq_sampling/ It is about a server chip that will also eat into Intel profits. Quote The mobile chip designer, based in San Diego, California, has RECRUITED engineers from AMD, Intel and Broadcom, as well as tapped its internal pool of techies, to WORK on the processor family. Qualcomm believes that by going straight to 10nm, it will motor ahead of Intel, which is right now shipping 14nm server CPUs.So, this should soon be good news for consumers. More competition, more choices. | |
| 1605. | Solve : Microsoft Windows Update Cleanup? |
| Answer» The latest update for Windows 7 SP1 machines (KB 2852386) includes a new option in the Disk Cleanup tool called Windows Update Cleanup. (Note: Windows Update Cleanup is included in Windows 8.1.)Thanks EF - wasn't aware of the option.I reclaimed 6.6 GB; in the comments under the Lifehacker announcement some people have mentioned 12 to 13 GB. Note: people have REPORTED failure trying to access the download using Firefox (Windows Validation barfs) - this happened to me, IE10 downloaded it with no problems. It installed for me as part of the Tuesday updates. It CAME with the standard updates for me as well. I actually cancelled the download halfway through, because the article said it was one of the optional updates (which I don't often look through), but it was part of the preselected updates already. Luckily, it resumed downloading from where it was, so it didn't waste any extra time.Windows Update Cleanup: 4.16GB I've been using CCleaner & manually deleting from C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads (only 2MB in there now). Winsxs folder is 12.0GB My Win7 OS + installed apps is 40GB, HDD is 320GB. I guess that MS figured with all the space available, it's not a problem. Wonder what made them change? Maybe the proliferation of the SSD? Or someone in change asking why are we saving all this junk? It did not delete ANYTHING from C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads Winsxs is still 12.0GB after the cleanup Windows Update Cleanup: 0GB Did this cleanup actually work? I don't think so.Something happened on the next restart (the following day, today). 1st said Configuring, Don't Turn Off Computer, then said CLEANING, Don't Turn Off Computer. Be prepared for a long boot time, took 5-10 minutes, instead of the normal 1 minute. Winsxs now says 7.86GB There should have been some kind of message after the INITIAL cleanup: "Cleanup will continue after the next restart" | |
| 1606. | Solve : AMD and Intel offer a bundle.? |
| Answer» For just US $449.99 you get a Core i5-6600K CPU with AMD's Polaris GPU . While this will get you a VR-ready system capable of pushing most of the games at ultra 1080p and 1440p gaming, according to AMD, you will also get a COUPLE of great games to play once you are done, the NEW Doom and CIVILIZATION VI.See this: http://www.fudzilla.com/news/42338-amd-and-intel-team-up-for-holiday-bundle It is rare to see Intel and AMD in the same story. Was hoping it was going to be an interesting motherboard of some kind with AMD GPU and Intel CPU. Which to me would be a very STRANGE build as for Intel has their Intel HD Graphics anyways so why go with AMD. Looking at the link though I see what it is now a gaming video card paired with a decent i5 CPU and a few games. Combo deal not a complete computer, so I suppose someone could take advantage of this as an upgrade or start of a new build when they round up a motherboard, RAM, and other parts. I had hopes for an interesting read of mixed AMD chipset and Intel CPU. Its been so many years since Intel and AMD shared a main board. Link here is a list of Intel CPU Boards with ATI Graphics. https://allmotherboards.info/index.php?chipsetMake=558 Maybe ATI was used because it was before AMD owned them for the boards in my link above: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATI_Technologies | |
| 1607. | Solve : Adobe Hacked? |
| Answer» Just received an email from Adobe informing me that my password has been reset, since they had recently had a SECURITY breach. Not really such a big DEAL for me since I only used it for downloading trial software BACK in like 2007, and I used some variant of a really obvious password. | |
| 1608. | Solve : What about the new AMD CPU?? |
| Answer» PC-World just published this: Even AMD fanboys have to admit that the company's CPUs haven’t been competitive with Intel’s chips in a decade. With AMD finally unveiling its official CPU brand, Ryzen, this afternoon, as well as the first chip’s base clock speed, there are signs Intel might ACTUALLY have a FIGHT on its hands. Here’s every single THING we know about AMD’s Ryzen CPU so far.It has 8 cores. So does the Intel ii7 6900K. In has a 20M cache. So does Intel It will use DDR4. DITTO Intel. Price is $1000. It's claimed to have better Instructions-Per-Clock and more efficient threading that makes it more like it has 16 cores than 8. Leaks suggest it will cost 500$. | |
| 1609. | Solve : Surface phone 2017? |
| Answer» The MS Surface phone was said to come in 2017. Or maybe 2018. Or never. | |
| 1610. | Solve : BBC says Windops 10 pops Wireless off.? |
| Answer» What makes this newsworthy is the source. BBCm yes the BBC now bad mouths Wimdows 10 for turning off your wireless connection. An update to Windows software has caused problems for personal computer users trying to connect to the internet."So loong"? One WEEK, I believe. KB3206632 fixes it, apparently. Earlier KB 3069068 June 11, 2015 fix: http://windowsreport.com/microsoft-windows-10-patch-fix-unexpected-loss-wifi-connectivity/ Today: Quote from: Salmon Trout on December 14, 2016, 01:32:06 PM "So loong"? One week, I believe. KB3206632 fixes it, apparently. What is KB3206632? Is it 1607? I just got it today. somebody just said: Quote Microsoft was tight lipped as always, but did publish a notification on the KB3201845 support page -- go figure! -- that asked users to restart the affected PC to fix the issue. Salmon Trout, It is hard for me to understand these updates as they come with very bare DOCUMENTATION. Would it be so hard to have somebody at MS write a 300 word document with each update so that we know what it is? Also, some checking shows that MS claimed to have fixed the drop out problem much earlier. Possibly the programmers at MS suffer for some kind of MEMORY loss wherein one can not remember a fix they ALREADY did. Post Script: Anther KB barely documented: Quote Microsoft pulls KB article 3201845 for Windows 10 14393.479http://www.infoworld.com/article/3149590/microsoft-windows/microsoft-pulls-kb-article-3201845-for-windows-10-14393479.html June this year. I believe I am an above average user and I am confused. KB Updates are named the same as the Knowledge Base Articles covering them. First hit from Google is the KB support page. I'm not sure how you were searching for information such that you found other links. KB3201845 was released on December 9th and introduced issues with wifi connections. It was pulled when the issues were discovered, and has been replaced with KB3206632 made available on Tuesday (13th), which fixes the problem. It is not related to the issues which were seen and fixed in 2015 via KB3069068 in the Technical Preview releases of the Operating System. BC_Programmer, thanks for the clarification. Right now one can just enter the KB number in Google and find the most recent stories. It seems this update has got a lot of attention. In addition to the wireless problem, it also goes to other issue that needed attention. Quote The new update was released to fix a problem with internet connections dropping for Windows 10 users, which Microsoft officially acknowledged in a blog post on December 8. The post has since been updated (on 12/13/’16) to reflect the new fix.http://1reddrop.com/2016/12/14/new-windows-10-update-released-cumulative-update-kb3206632-build-14393-576/ The BBC article was published before the new update. They have no put this on that page: Quote Update 14 December 2016:BBC has other earlier stories about Windows 10. | |
| 1611. | Solve : BartPE Live USB Spons Anti-Virus? |
| Answer» The full title is: “This technology was designed for those whose computer have been sabotaged by invasive malware to the point of brokenness. It these ALLOWED targeted users to reenter their device and perform virus clean out in the hope of restoring the device's functionality. Moderator: This was published a few days ago. It is news for me and maybe others.BartPE has been around for over 10 years. If it hasn't "revolutionised" anti virus technology in all that time, why should it do so now? That article is by idCloak, who sell VPN services and cloud storage. I am not doing SPAM. The point is the they claim it is legal to use Bert's PE for the stated purpose. That has been controversial. This is. for me, the fist time I read a businessman who would have a possible conflict of interest claim it is legal for a commercial company to use Bert's PE in a package. The article focus is on Windows 7, which is not ten years old. And recent virkuks and malware are getting to be more cyber chocholistic. Therefore, it would be alright for a member of CH to recommend Bert's PE to help virus victims. Actually you are... Think about it...Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 04, 2013, 02:58:41 PM The article focus is on Windows 7, which is not ten years old. It's not "Windows 7", it seems... Quote from: the article Although it is sometimes called BartPE Windows 7 USB, the freeware actually creates a Windows XP / Server 2003 environment for use with Windows 7 system. The name Bart PE Windows 7 is therefore a little misleading. Nonetheless, even in its XP form, BartPE USB is plenty capable of safeguarding the use of a number of internet programs, including a Firefox browser, and on a 32 or 64bit computer. A range of BartPE plugins allow a USER to insert programs (like Firefox) into the Live USB environment. and, oh dear! There's a little problem... Quote from: the article Windows 7 Live USB will only offer computer anti virus protection to users that do not abide by the Windows EULA, which I imagine reduces their population significantly. I wonder if the next bit is meant to be a joke? Quote from: the article But if BartPE Windows 7 can gain popularity as a preventative measure – and see users only connecting to the internet through a BartPE environment – the freeware could single-handedly put a huge dent into Windows malware infections worldwide. I must say the article has a strong flavour of being written in a hurry to fill up some space (and of BS). The article's theme is that people would be a lot less likely to get infected with malware if they only surfed the web from browsers running in "live CD" environments. The author seems rather ignorant of anything except Windows type solutions - he says "There are three systems – Windows to Go USB, Windows 7 Live USB and BarptPE Windows 7 – all of which provide a means of separating your internet use and your computer use so that internet-based malware is unable to find its way onto your hard drives." Then he proceeds to examine them: 1. Windows to Go USB: Only available to Windows 8 Enterprise users and only legal to use on a business computer in that environment. 2. Windows 7 live USB: illegal! 3. BartPE Windows 7: illegal! (and not Windows 7). So he seems to be one of those girls that promise a lot to get your attention but delivers little at the end of the date. What amazes me is that he completely ignores the dozens of Linux live CDs and USB solutions that do what he envisages absolutely legally and just throw up a GUI recognisable to Windows users and a browser that they can use just like on a Windows machine. All in all, a non-article to get people to Google in and boost their ad revenue and/or Google page ranking and/or read ads for their VPN products. Salmon Trout, You a re right. I was suckered. As for Live CDs using Linux. They work very good. And are even useful to clean a machine running the Apple OS. Here are some for Windows. Legal. Free. http://www.thewindowsclub.com/bootable-antivirus-rescue-cd-windows-free-download Thank you Salmon-Trout for sawing bits thread.I have a bootable pen drive that contains (1) a live Slax CD (ISO image) for Internet access and (2) The legal Windows 7 Repair Disk ISO I created after I installed the OS. Using Grub4DOS I can select EITHER from a menu. Thus all bases are covered. Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 04, 2013, 02:58:41 PM The point is the they claim it is legal to use Bert's PE for the stated purpose. That has been controversial. It's not controversial on respectable websites, it's simply not allowed due to licensing or lack of licensing. Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 04, 2013, 02:58:41 PM Therefore, it would be alright for a member of CH to recommend Bert's PE to help virus victims. No, it's not. You don't want MS or other copyright holders to see us as supporting warez. Windows PE, Linux Distributions, Live CD/DVDs. These are ADVANCED tools not really suitable for the majority of people seeking help in forums IMO. | |

| 1615. | Solve : Smart Device - Potential Privacy Problem? |
| Answer» IT at work passed this article globally through e-mail system today. Found it rather interesting and figured I'd share it here: Voice control is already a culprit in unwanted Amazon orders Never thought of a smart device acting like a genie that grants your wishes but hits your credit card and stuff all of a sudden shows up.... A discussion of what to have for dinner with family or speaking openly like "Boy I could really go for a Pizza right now", or I want the latest iPhone and poof the genie grants it in the mail a few days later unexpectedly. It would be funny to come home from work and have a wall of boxes blocking ENTRY to my home from Amazon, seeing that smile on every box right in view adding to how funny it would be. I dont own any devices with voice command enabled. My phone can do voice commands, but I dont have that app active. One of my friends has a device that is always listening for voice commands and every once in a while it gets a false positive and it will keep saying I DID NOT UNDERSTAND YOUR COMMAND PLEASE REPEAT... he then has to lower the TV Volume and Yell out TEMPERATURE and it will say IT IS 68 DEGREES in a womans artificial voice and is SATISFIED and then is scanning again for commands within the background NOISE of TV and chatting etc. I find that annoying when at his house and the frequency that he has to give it a valid command to shut it up because otherwise it will just keep saying SORRY I DID NOT UNDERSTAND and if you say SHUT UP it doesnt recognize that to be quiet. Just realized... Im going to SAVE my empty Amazon Boxes and save them for 4/1. And do a prank on my wife. A wall of Amazon boxes at front door for April fools when she gets home from work and put a can of soup or other stuff in them so they arent empty but seem legit. Gonna ask friends for their empty boxes too. Can show her this article and say we have a device that is placing orders based on voice in our home... Additionally I liked this link here which shares how to clean out saved voice: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201602040 [attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Hysterical...Awesome ! Haha you'd think after 'dollhouse-gate' they'd think twice about this kind of thing. Either that or they're trying to annoy people!Quote Haha you'd think after 'dollhouse-gate' they'd think twice about this kind of thing. Either that or they're trying to annoy people! Funny that there was more to dollhouse story... people watching the news about little girls story, that had this device also got dollhouse and 4 pounds of cookies ordered who had this device, which was ready to act like a genie but with endless wishes without a code required to authenticate transaction. http://www.theverge.com/2017/1/7/14200210/amazon-alexa-tech-news-anchor-order-dollhouse An MIT STUDENT has 2 of those devices arguing with each other.... | 1616. | Solve : Upcoming Windows 10 Gaming Mode.? |
| Answer» This MAY be premature. This new feature was first spotted by WalkingCat in the recently leaked BUILD 14997, and although it isn't working yet, we understand it's a feature that will be showing up for Insiders very soon, as it's something that's set to arrive with the Creators Update.Wait and see. Not gonna hold my BREATH...It is a bit frustrating to see new features like this being added when their existing featureset contains COPIOUS shortcomings, especially in the area of UI, such as the VPN/networks foldout. I've stopped looking forward to that being fixed since it was reported in the earliest insider builds as being absolutely god-awful, meanwhile they've continued to add added gilded lily nonsense. Game Mode? Blue Light reduction? The ability to interact with the setup PROGRAM via voice commands? This all sounds like stuff nobody wants, to be honest. To be even more brutally honest i don't think anyone woulda wanted 10 to begin with if they saw this "finished product"... | |
| 1617. | Solve : The somewhat dubious “Russia hacked Vermont” story? |
| Answer» The SOMEWHAT dubious “Russia hacked Vermont” story BURLINGTON, Vt. — Malicious software believed tied to a Russian hacking group associated with attempts to influence the U.S. presidential election was found Friday within a computer that belongs to Burlington Electric, one of Vermont’s electrical utilities.OR: http://mashable.com/2016/12/31/power-grid-in-vermont-was-not-infiltrated-by-russian-hackers/#NQKFMnNFW5qw Quote You may have read or seen on social media a Washington Post story published Friday which claimed that Russian hackers had hacked the U.S. power system via an electrical grid in Vermont.Take your pick. The retraction is now on the Washington Post site. Now see if you can find it. From what I read and heard, it was some guys laptop and homeland security put out a notice to have all systems scanned for a potential threat. This one lone laptop was found to be infected. The method of infection unknown. But it sounds like it was likely infected outside of the secured network when the user used the laptop on a unprotected internet connection outside of the protection of the main companies network. This story caught my attention pretty FAST because I work in White River Junction VT and live 15 miles AWAY on the NH side. The quickness to assume blame on Russia to me is kind of to me almost crazy talk unless they know for a fact that its Russia's Military that is carrying out these actions. They keep saying Russia this Russia that, but then they back down when it gets to saying with certainty that its strategic and of military nature. It could be just some hackers out there that are not associated with the Russian military. With the exact hackers unknown it should just remain that a hacker group based out of Russia, "Only if 100% sure its of Russian origin ", is to blame for infections that are going around of this kind. Being so quick to blame Russias Military and Putin is to me the crazy talk of Trump who babbles like a 5 year old that doesn't get his way, quick to put blame without knowing all the facts. God Help the USA for the term that this idiot is running the show. Would the USA Military and leadership be blamed by other countries if one lone hacker or small group was based in the USA and hacked or infected their systems. This quick to escalate to Military origin to me is the kind of crap that SENT us to Iraq and then no chemical weapons found... OOPs our bad If there was ever a war with Russia, thats it GAME OVER ... NO WINNER ... Everyone Wiped Out. We have been in a stalemate with them ever since the cold war, and that stalemate needs to remain a stalemate since the powers that be cant get along without the stalemate. Trump being the whiny 5 year old that he is, I pray that Russia looks at him as a fool that he is and never carry out any attack as a result of this mans hot headed words. Putin is smart and is hopefully laughing at Trumps stupidity. Do we really want a war with Russia caused my hot headed and quick to assume without fact idiots. The USA just needs to tighten up on information security, remove systems that are CRITICAL from any ability to backdoor and get that persons bottom into work to do whatever it is vs remotely from home etc. Additionally the most secure of communications would be to use communications that dont use the internet as a backbone to carry out communications such as a private network using custom OS that is like no other and immune to all infection types because its so drastically different. Example being if a new system was put in place and it was well protected from leaking out the OS and hardware to others it would be the most secure system out there because someone cant sandbox and play with it to make vulnerabilities and test their hacks and malware, you cant write malware for an unknown system. You cant easily hack an unknown system. Everything out there that is critical that is riding on the internet as a backbone comes down to complete laziness of making the correct system which would have isolation and be different from computers that we all use. An OS that supports a military class processor only etc, and those processors having strict control of keeping track of them to avoid them getting out into the wrong hands. The OS that wont run on any consumer or server grade processor. That is the direction they need to go vs being lazy and using the same type of computers and OS that everyone can easily get their hands on and make vulnerabilities for. The babbling 5 year old still occupies the White House...his name is Obama...not Trump...Quote The babbling 5 year old still occupies the White House...his name is Obama...not Trump... I agree with you there, I didnt care for him either, and he showed weakness in crying like he did. Trmp I feel is going to be worse than Obama though. Time will tell. The issue i have is that he is in the process of making this one of the rockiest transitions of power ...ever. What a putz.A lot of Malicious software originates from Eastern Europe, but that doesn't indicate that a system infected with it was infected as part of some sort of cyber-warfare. Quote Additionally the most secure of communications would be to use communications that dont use the internet as a backbone to carry out communications such as a private network using custom OS that is like no other and immune to all infection types because its so drastically differentSounds an awful lot like security through obscurity. On the arguably related political stuff, I've seldom heard any body say they were happy with their country's current political leadership. I'm seeing the same relatives on Facebook that called Harper a fascist posting comparisons between Hitler and Trudeau and talking about how they "always supported the government with Harper but no more!" I think in many cases that is because it's a lot easier to blame problems on poor leadership than have to take responsibility for your own prosperity.I'm locking this thread. NO POLITICAL DISCUSSIONS PLEASE | |

| 1623. | Solve : Intellwill improve CPU upgrade plan.? |
| Answer» Is this news? Well, if the really do it. it is good news from DIY users. n the meanwhile, Intel will speed up its modem development so it can transition to 5G quickly. Intel is looking to grow in the communications market, while giving a lower priority to PCs, a market that has flattened. The company was showing off its new modems at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week.Shall I hold my breath? EDIT: Above quote is from InfoWorld. http://www.infoworld.com/article/3175805/computers/intel-will-change-its-approach-to-pc-chip-upgrades.html#tk.rss_news Comments? What I read from the article is that their "CHANGES" involve having newer chips actually run faster than their predecessors, which was, interestingly, not actually a given previously. This is probably a response to the release of AMD's Ryzen pretty much completely obliterating them in pretty much every single possible way. How far "We've decided to stop gouging you for non-upgrades" will actually get Intel? well that's another question. That they've already plummeted their pricing suggests that they were intentionally pricing their product with an excessive margin merely because they could, which doesn't tend to encourage consumer goodwill, even if it is "just business".Quote Now they say the CPU upgrade path will make sense to the individual user who just wants to improve what h has without the need for a new motherboard. How you arrived at this conclusion is waay beyond me...and you should stop mis-interpreting News articles here. I seriously DOUBT a 10nm chip is gonna work in existing Gen7 MBoards... Quit doin news.Quote from: patio on March 01, 2017, 10:40:47 AM How you arrived at this conclusion is waay beyond me...and you should stop mis-interpreting News articles here.I never said a 10 nm was to go on any current mobo. Patio, my remark is based on what they said about more generations on a node. Quote Intel is changing its view on how it upgrades chips.Nodes or not your statement was total bunk... See what i quoted. Your tryin to interpret their manuf. process being simplified and equate it to the end user not having to replace a MBoard for a chip upgrade which as i stated total Bunk...and a misrepresentation of the article...Quote from: patio on March 03, 2017, 11:04:31 PM Nodes or not your statement was total bunk...I respectfully disagree. From the article, the intent of Intel is to offer more incremental upgrades to CPUs without the need to re-do the whole motherhood. This is to please markets other than DIY PC-Gamers. Intel is looking at telecoms and data centres and related IT industries for upgrading CPUs rather that buying better mother boards. Such would be attractive. Sell more CPUs, less chipsets. So the IT centre, not the computer maker, would buy more from Intel. Now if Intel really does have a new incremental and economical upgrade path to favor CPU upgrade over motherboard upgrade, it may filter down to be a plus for DIY PC hobby people. I did not mean to say Intel was wanting to target the small DIY audience. No, rather, an incremental upgrade path would benefit everybody, not just the large users in telecom and IT industries. Does that make sense? I don't see how that follows from the articles, myself. There is no mention of sticking with the same socket; the manufacturing process (14nm) being the same for the new chip doesn't necessarily mean it can be dropped into a LGA 1151 socket. | |

| 1627. | Solve : Wells Fargo Smartphone ATM.? |
| Answer» Instead of using your credit card, Wells Fargo bank is retrofitting all its ALMs to use the customers smart phone instead of a credit card to withdraw cash from the ATM. Wells Fargo earlier today announced that iPhone and Android users can now enjoy card-less access to 13,000 Wells Fargo ATMs across the country. To take advantage of the new feature, customers will need Wells Fargo’s mobile app which will GENERATE a one-time 8-digit token that, alongside the user’s PIN, can be used authenticate a given user’s identity and allow them to initiate any number of transactions. But my 10 inch tablet phone does not fit in my wallet. The article at your 2nd link says, as I would expect, "Presumably, it’s only a matter of time before other banks begin rolling out similar FUNCTIONALITY across their own ATMs." I'm sure we'll gradually see more banks adding such capability to their systems. BTW, that 2nd link you posted is not from BBC. It's a company called BGR Media, LLC. ACTUALLY, I'm glad to know about it since it looks like a good "online destination for news and commentary focused on the mobile and CONSUMER electronics markets", as stated at http://bgr.com/about-bgr/ | |

I do still prefer my Thinkpad, though The Pro 4 is great for meetings- On Wednesday we were investigating a Data Issue that appeared on one of our sites that affected customer balances- Being able to flip it around easily as we're all looking at query data and invoices to TRY to see where the issue is coming from was quite useful in that scenario, and was FASTER than it would have been to try the same with my laptop, even though my Laptop has nearly the same screen res (2880x1620) and is a touchscreen, flipping it out into a tablet isn't recommended
| 1630. | Solve : Intel & Google in the News? |
| Answer» YES, Intel just made a new advance in chip making. They now have a 10 nm wafer. But the big news is what Intel and Google are doing that will have move impact on everybody's life. Here is what I mean. Look at this: https://seekingalpha.com/article/4108155-intel-google-can-rule-autonomous-car-industry Intel And Google Can Rule The Autonomous Car Industry If you are an individual who can not drive or cannot own an automobile, this will be important to you. {My wife will not let me drive her car.} Quote After completing its $15.3 billion acquisition of Mobileye last month, Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) is wasting no time recovering its investment. CEO Krzanich used a blog post to announce that Intel is now working with Google’s (GOOG, GOOGL) self-driving car unit, Waymo. Intel and Waymo are collaborating toward producing level 4 and level 5 autonomous cars. While only announced now, this partnership actually started during the early days of Google's self-driving car efforts back in 2009.I copied the picture and added something... I want one... Now! I'm still waiting for the bloody hover board. (And No, not that 'special' one they made a couple of years ago that needs super COOLING and only works above a special track for 10 seconds)What happened to world's first Self-Driving by Uber?I'm curious into what fail safe and redundant systems are in place for these cars. If a satellite dies and GPS is dead, do they just veer off into the trees or what. Next will be automated airlines. No pilots because they can be hijacked. hmmm and the AI system cant be tricked into crashing like the Die Hard movie pops into my head with altimeter offset so it thinks its higher than it actually is. I have a hard enough time using cruise control in my car. I played with it to check it out but steering and having the car control gas and brakes to hold a constant speed to me is too lazy and i feel a lack of control in only steering or tapping brake to get it to stop accelerating towards that slow car. Im quite happy having as much control as i can, but you know what they say you have to worry about other drivers, well people are generally not suicidal and so they wont pull out in front of you. I dont like the idea that a automated car can DECIDE to just pull out in front of me to which I could be killed and the owner of the vehicle says oh well not my fault, blame the manufacturer, as they were at air port waiting for their car to pick them up because its cheaper to tell their car to drive itself home and drive back to pick them up 2 weeks later vs pay for the expensive airport parking of $12 a day for 14 days.DaveLembke, I agree with you. Many people have lost their driver's license. I am among these. So, for those who can not drive and can not hire a driver, the automated card would be the choice. Yhe alternative would be a good public transportation stem. But few cities in the USA have good public transportation. So, not being able to resolve the political issues, mean are turning toward technology. Sorry, not allowed to make cements about the political scene. Just wanted to say tact if the politics was better, we would not have to turn to technology as much. This is related: https://smartasset.com/mortgage/best-cities-for-public-transportation Quote Transit is gaining steam. The total number of transit users was up 9% from 2011 in the 136 cities in SmartAsset’s analysis. In major cities in the west and in Texas, including San Jose, Dallas, Seattle and Denver, transit use increased by more than 20%.If so, then maybe things are getting better. I mean better in transportation. .So far, while self-driving cars have been in accidents, all of them have had it discovered that the accident was caused by the driver taking over from the system. That's pretty promising on it's own. Notwithstanding the case where a Google car pulled out in front of a bus trying to drive around sandbags, but GIVEN that was after 1.3 Million miles, that's still a fairly good track record. Just being a pedestrian I've had a few encounters with cars nearly hitting me at crosswalks or intersections because the driver wasn't paying attention. Usually it's some idiot glued to their phone. I'd rather a computer system that was always paying attention than a person who almost never was. If we're at a crossroads when it comes to self-driving cars I think the ethical "trolley problem" we have is deciding between not working on and implementing self-driving cars and continue on with all the preventable deaths we have today due to car accidents, or make car travel universally safer at the cost of letting an AI make a few moral decisions. I think in some sense it's a cognitive bias. We think of things "keeping on as they were" as being normal, and therefore people dying because things remained unchanged were totally natural. It's why accidents involving self-driving cars are so newsworthy- they reaffirm our cognitive bias that nothing should change. It's the same reason that accidents involving cars rather than carriages were newsworthy around the time of their original introduction, when "high-speed chase" meant a bicycle- or accidents involved people rubber-necking one of the new horseless carriages and not paying attention, which we also see with self-driven cars which have no driver occupant. So far, 99% of the information leans in that direction when it comes to self-driving cars versus cars driven by their human occupants. I'd argue that we have all the information and acting on it to make travel safer for everybody is almost an ethical obligation to develop and make the technology available at this point. Self-driving cars cache information and can observe their surroundings. They don't rely on an Internet Connection to work. Self-flying aircraft is already a thing but I don't think it will be a thing for commercial airlines anytime soon. The advantage of self-driving cars is a reduction in accidents, injuries, and deaths, but there isn't nearly the potential to see those sort of improvements from a fully autonomous 747 for example."All of them "....i think that's innacurate at best...Quote from: patio on September 28, 2017, 02:44:05 PM "All of them "....i think that's innacurate at best... Fair enough,"Almost all of them" would probably be more accurate, though other than the car pulling out in front of a bus due to other road conditions (a mistake a human can easily make anyway) I can't find any other examples. Definitely a solid majority of articles covering autonomous vehicle crashes end up being a case of the occupant taking over and trying to blame the self-driving aspect of their vehicle. Regardless, IMO people take the responsibility of driving speeding metal death boxes on the road far too lightly. It's why places NEED to actually *legislate* that people not use smartphones while driving, which is an absolutely insane concept to me. That should never have been necessary. But it's become so passe that we accept it and then interpret the results of the resulting lack of due care and attention as being natural. Often the reaction to seeing a mom driving a heavy SUV down the highway at speed who is on their smartphone while tying their kids shoe is to roll eyes rather than anything that would be more appropriate for such an apathetic attitude towards somebodies responsibility to avoid vehicular manslaughter. A self-driving car isn't going to pull a Jeena Roberts. Honestly? I think that's enough for me.Are you stating that self driving cars cannot text while driving or tie a kids shoes ? ? If so they are worthless...Quote Are you stating that self driving cars cannot text while driving or tie a kids shoes ? ? and why does the Jetsons pop into my head reading that ... | |

| 1632. | Solve : Major Cyberware Attack World Wide? |
| Answer» Today, Friday may 12. The BBC, the New York Times, Fox news and other major media report a very big Cyber attack taht has hit some big companies and institutions. The link below says hospitals were also hit: http://www.cumbriacrack.com/2017/05/12/nhs-hospitals-hit-major-cyber-attack/ Quote Trusts and hospitals in London, Blackburn, Nottingham, CUMBRIA, Merseyside and Hertfordshire have been affected, other parts of the country are also reporting problems with their computer systems. It is said to be ransomware. For more search: Major Cyberware Attack USA Today: https://www.usatoday.com/videos/tech/2017/05/12/major-ransomware-attack-hits-thousands-systems-worldwide/101611568/ The current thinking is that it used a SMB vulnerability (MS17-010) to spread across a local network. The vulnerability was patched by Microsoft in March. This reinforces why I lose faith in people advising to just "turn off Windows update" or that it's safe to run an unsupported version of Windows because "if you have Antivirus it'll be fine". Don't think the situation was helped by the NHS apparently cancelling their support contract with Microsoft while still continuing to USE XP: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/may/26/uk-government-pcs-open-to-hackers-as-paid-windows-xp-support-ends Does make you wonder where they are getting their IT staff from if they would be remotely happy doing such a thing. At the very least apply this patch although maybe treat this as a reason why it isn't a good idea to still run a 15 year old operating system...camerongray, I have to agree with you. Yes, I still use XP. But it is insane for a large company to continue running XP. No...it's not. And the vulnerability is NOT specific to XP PC's... Look at this: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/12/world/europe/nhs-cyberattack-warnings.html?_r=0 Quote Many of the N.H.S. computers still run Windows XP, an out-of-date software that no longer gets security updates from its MAKER, Microsoft. A government contract with Microsoft to update the software for the N.H.S. expired two years ago. Many? How many is many? They should not an ANY. Quote “Historically, we’ve known that N.H.S. uses computers running old versions of Windows that Microsoft itself no longer supports and says is a security risk,” said Graham Cluley, a cybersecurity expert in Oxford, England. “And even on the newest computers, they would have needed to apply the patch released in March. Clearly that did not happen, or the malware wouldn’t have spread this fast.”Is it OK to take Aspirin that has expired a year ago? Ask your DOCTOR. Kinda what i stated above...I never said it was specific to XP. However, XP machines without an extended support contract would not have received the patch that was made available for newer versions of Windows.Au contraire'... XP still recieves important security updates...contrary to popular belief... I just got some yesterday. Don't know what they do. They are security updates...they went out to all Win machines...as i said...read more. My XP rig which is on 24/7 gets them regularly...Windows XP is out of support and no longer receives Security Updates, and hasn't received regular security updates since April 2014. Microsoft has provided a few out-of-band security updates for serious issues like this one to the public and continues to provide security updates and bulletins to corporations paying for extended support contracts. The last Security update for Windows XP was KB2965111 on May 1st, 2014, (which was also an out-of-band update). I can find no reference or information about XP updates (KB articles) issued after that date. Some users have decided that fiddling with their registry to make Windows Update identify their system as a POS Terminal system is a sufficient replacement, as those continue to receive EFT security updates. The fact that EFT security patches aren't particularly useful on consumer systems doesn't seem to affect their glee at "beating the system". Mine gets updates about every 3 weeks...and i havent spoofed it to a POS system either...Back to the broad scope of topic. | 1633. | Solve : Windows 10 ARM Runs x86 Almost Native? |
| Answer» The full title is: Earlier this year, Qualcomm announced that some of its next-generation ARM chips would actually be used for Windows 10 devices. This came as a bit of a surprise–while Qualcomm and Microsoft have worked together previously, as far back as Windows 8, but most of the devices that SHIPPED with the ill-fated Windows RT used Nvidia hardware, not Qualcomm SoCs.... Quote As for whether this poses a threat to Intel, for now, I THINK it doesn’t. Offering “near native” performance is a great buzzword, but we don’t yet know what the performance hit will be. Furthermore, tablets and smartphone-class processors aren’t REALLY the chips you want to use for a desktop or high-end mobile workstation, no matter how much you like ARM. | 1635. | Solve : Photobucket accused of blackmail? |
| Answer» Photo bucket is a popular photo sharing site. Is is a free service. Or is it? It all began last week when Photobucket announced in a short blog post that it had updated its terms of service that had begun taking effect from June 20th. Nowhere in the blog post did Photobucket highlight the most important change, which was that it will now cost uploaders $400 a year to insert their photos on another website using direct image links. What? Is this tr true? Well, for starters, these people need to pick up a dictionary. Blackmail is when you demand money from somebody in return for not revealing compromising information. For example if you demand payment from somebody to not reveal that you found out they were having an affair, or something. The closest argument could be made for extortion. But even that is a stretch. The argument would be that people like ebayers and craigslist advertisers and so forth that have been using photobucket hotlinking would have to move the images to another host and update their links. I don't think that is extortion. That's just the end-users being lazy. And at the level where there are so many instances to update that it's a lot of work, why were they using a free image upload service and RELYING on it for what is effectively a business to begin with? +1...it ain't blackmail. Just another sensationalised Geek story...I had this warning about one month ago but it hasn't affected my use of Photobucket on third party sites such as the forum but I have NOTICED that other people have been affected.I see why it's ANNOYING but to be honest I don't BLAME them - Photobucket relies on advertising on their website to generate revenue from free users. If people hotlink images on other sites, Photobucket won't GET any of this advertising revenue while still having to deal with the costs of the additional server load caused by requests to the hot-linked images. Personally I always avoid hot-linking images on websites and instead will either upload it directly to the website that the image is being used on or link to it. | |

That’s fast deployment. Myerson said a school in Colorado set up over 600 laptops in a single day using 30 of these Windows 10 S USB sticks.http://www.pcworld.com/article/3193700/windows/meet-windows-10-s-a-streamlined-simplified-windows-store-only-os-for-schools.html This can help Microsoft move ahead in the education market. Deployment in under 30 seconds. Hard to believe! Interesting find Geek ..... as per article I read states trick question with following info,.... I took it that it was like android devices where they are flashed by manufacturer with the OS, some devices by which you cant jail break them and the OS that came on them is on them for the life of the device with only updates if updates pushed down from manufacturer such as my LG smart phone running Android 4.4.2 : Quote
And your article says its wide open with ... Quote slap it on a USB key that can be used to installed that customized version of Windows 10 S on any PC in under 30 seconds. If able to install through USB stick to devices, this kind of changes things as per.... if only for devices that come with it, is there code that tests the hardware preinstallation to make sure that its being installed on a Microsoft Approved device etc. Maybe the key is nested in the BIOS like UEFI on Windows 8 and newer computers to protect it from installation on non-microsoft approved devices. To me it seems as one of these articles has wrong facts ... This was a detail I missed. Quote Software support’s a key part of educational computers as well. Microsoft’s TOSSING in a free one-year subscription to Minecraft: Education Edition with Windows 10 S laptops, and making Office 365 for Education free to schools. In addition, any current Windows 10 Pro PC being used by a school can be flashed to Windows 10 S for free. Microsoft’s also adding classroom-focused capabilities to Microsoft Teams. From this, imagine a school that already has a lot of cheap notebook PCs running Windows 10 and they want to go with windows 10 S. In other words, from 10 to 10 S is a STEP up for the school. The 10 S would be a more structured, controlled and managed thing. The sort of thing badly needed in schools. Unfortunately, it would DEPRIVE the students of learning about all the goo and bad things your can do with a computer. But most students need to learn the good first, and do the bad later. So it was not a full deployment of Windows 10 on a blank computer. But, like you said, it follows the Android model. There is already a core OS and the update just adds to what is already three. Still, that is an improvement. Going from Windows 7 to Windows 10 can TAKE over an hour. Microsoft now claims the going from 10 to 10 S should only be a few seconds. Makes sense.
| 1640. | Solve : Microsoft builds a power user Windows 10? |
| Answer» From Yahoo and two or more other sources. First, it comes with ReFS (Resilient file system) to protect your data from corruption, which is especially important when you're handling large storage volumes on a server. ReFS can detect when data's screwed up on a mirrored hard drive and then use another non-corrupt backup to automatically fix the bad one, ensuring your data's always undamaged. isn't that what RAID already can do? (well, at least my NAS can)Quote from: Mark. on August 12, 2017, 07:18:44 PM isn't that what RAID already can do? (well, at least my NAS can)That was mu first take. Maybe in the days ahead Microsoft will explain why this is more that hard drive reliability. The implication is that when you have a very huge memory array, you can have strange errors that are not correctable by the tools we already have. Here is an article with more detail: http://sci.newsfactor.com/story.xhtml?story_id=023002KGZUC0 Quote Set to be released as part of Microsoft's coming Fall Creators Update, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations will come with high-end persistent memory, support for faster file sharing, and an enhanced file system for handling large volumes of data. It will also feature expanded hardware support for advanced, server-grade processors, up to four CPUs, and as much as 6 TB of memory. Notice the reference to memory over TB. As I understand it, normally, when one drive in a RAID is found to be corrupt you have to manually rebuild the Array. It sounds like ReFS includes features aimed at the File System being used with RAID redundancy that allows those sorts of tasks to be handled automatically. it also looks like it is able to keep volumes "live" when they are damaged where NTFS often makes a volume entirely inaccessible due to corruptions. Here is yet another news release. https://www.theverge.com/2017/8/10/16128072/microsoft-windows-10-pro-for-workstations-features Search for 'Windows 10 Workstations edition ' | |

| Answer» Specification for INTEL's new Compute Cards are out. It shows consumers and manufacturers will have options up to 7th-generation Core i5 processors, and 128GB of PCI Express storage. Here is one of a number of reports: https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2017/5/30/15713394/intel-compute-card-pocket-pc-computex-2017-lg-dell-lenovo Watch a video: https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/intel-compute-card-kaby-lake/ What it is: It is a tiny PC in a FAT credit card with no keyboard or DISPLAY. It has to be inside of something else to do its job. In theory, you could pull it out of your DESKTOP and put in into you tablet at go for a trip. While inside your card you could plug in into a slot where the radio used to be and you would use your car's display. Then when you get to the hotel, you can plug it into the TV set and use it as if lit were your home PC. But not yet... They say in August. I will not hold by breath that long.. My opinion: Too LITTLE too late. It should have some kind of emergency display, keyboard and a battery. Otherwise it is just a hunk of metal in your pocket if you ever get lost in the woods. Better to carry a cell phone. I think it will fail. | |
| 1642. | Solve : New Security Patch for Windows Vista and XP? |
| Answer» Microsoft has released a security patch for Windows Vista and XP. Last MONTH Microsoft made the decision to issue a "highly UNUSUAL" patch for Windows XP. Despite the fact the operating system has not been supported for some time, the patch was released in an attempt to thwart the WannaCrypt ransomware attacks. Thanks Microsoft! Not earth- shattering...been gettin monthly updates on my XP rig for a YEAR...maybe longer...PATIO, I am not the one saying this is earth shaking. The Earth is still firm. I would say that it is striding up troubled waters. Many media sites are saying this is more than the usual thing. A number of media sites say the inclusion of XP and Visa are notable. Why would they say that? Here is a report that suggests the new updates are because of "government" sponsored cyber attacks on all Windows OS. http://www.outlookindia.com/newsscroll/microsoft-releases-new-updates-citing-elevated-cyber-attack-risk/1075161 Quote New York [U.S.A.], June 14 : In wake of the increasing risks of cyber attack across the globe, microsoft has released several critical security updates to provide protection against widespread hacking, citing an "elevated risk of cyber attacks." Here is most recent thing from CNN about the Microsoft updates. http://money.cnn.com/2017/06/13/technology/microsoft-cyber-attacks-windows-wannacry-updates/index.html Quote Tuesday's security update includes patches to its Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Server 2003 products, which are unsupported but still widely-used. These patches must be installed manually.Glad I got it. | |
| 1643. | Solve : CPUs will be revealed during American eclipse.? |
| Answer» The coming great American eclipse will expose ... Intel’s response to AMD’s disruptive Ryzen processors is soon to get its time in the sun. Well, sort of. On Tuesday, Intel announced plans to livestream the launch of its 8th-generation “Coffee Lake” processors on August 21 Quote We’ve heard rumors of six-core chips and quad-core Core i3 chips finally cracking into Intel’s mainstream lineup,Thanks for sharing that.... I found this other part that is LINKED within that also interesting: http://www.pcworld.com/article/3197184/components-processors/amd-ryzen-threadripper-prices-specs-release-date-and-more.htmlYeah, Intel is plaything catch me if you can with AMD The new AMD chip, already in the market place, comes in three models The 16 core, the 12 core and a 8 core. All have the name Threadripper . The Ryzen Threadripper 1900X will feature 8 cores with SMT for 16 threads of compute POWER, similar to the Ryzen 7 1800X but slotting into more capable X399 motherboards. The 1900X's base clock speed is 3.8GHz with a 4GHz boost speed. Some other odd details: Memory: Quad-channel DDR4 Can’t be “delided” easily as it uses a solder thermal interface material. Alienware has the worldwide exclusive on Threadripper systems Threadripper will not ship with an included liquid-cooled cooled. I don't understand. Who needs this? If it will not fit in my shirt pocket. Quote from: Geek-9pm on August 10, 2017, 02:39:26 PM I don't understand. Who needs this? If it will not fit in my shirt pocket. Is this part of your ongoing "Desktop PCs are dead" thing? Anyway ThreadRipper is their highest end Ryzen offering. Alongside the i9 this is going to be the chip "to have" for vain gamers and system builders alike as well as people into Cryptocurrency MLMs. It likely also has uses in compute, both because of it's CPU performance as well as the added PCI-E capabilities, which allow many more GPUs to be connected at full speed for more compute power for rendering, scientific applications, and so forth. Intel has finally gotten some real competition for high-end performance again which they hadn't seen since the Athlon destroyed the Pentium 4. It's great because, either way- consumers win. We get access to cheaper, faster chips, as well as more choice. A few years ago, if somebody was building a new high-end PC, it was basically a choice between Intel chips. Now AMDs new offerings add additional value propositions and Intel chip prices have slashes as well.Right. I can not imagine a 16 core thing on a Desktop PC. Once upon a time they made 12sylinder automobiles. Never ought on. Cryptocurrency MLMs. On my! Is that even legal? So if I am the first in my neighborhood to get a 16 core CPU and I spend a few days trading Cryptocurrency will I become rich overnight? Tell me more. Otherwise, stock trading can be done on almost any common desktop CPU. The average user, and even the above average user, does not a conceivable need for the kind of horsepower AMD and Intel now offer. If I even could imagine such power would improve my life, I would wait in line to get one. But I just don't believe it could benefit me in any way. A desktop PC with four to eight video cards? How work that work "Cryptocurrency MLM" was my half-joking way of describing bitcoin, etherium, litecoin, and any number of other cryptocurrencies. I consider them MLMs because the earlier you get into them, the more money you get out of it and you do so at the expense of later investors. It's not a perfect analogy to, say, Amway, but it's close enough IMO to avoid it. it is not related to stock trading. You get cryptocurrency by "Mining". This is effectively performing hash calculations on a larger blockchain, which takes computing power and time. But faster GPUs and CPUs means less time to mine and you mine faster, so you get more of the cryptocurrency. Thus dedicated miners create massive rigs with ridiculous amounts of computing power specifically to perform pointless computations in order to get more of various cryptocurrencies, known as "mining rigs". Crypto Mining is surprisingly large market- There have been graphics cards shortages on new releases because Crypto miners have pretty much bought them all. And then even more issues because they get sold on the used market and end up as a factory warranty return because the stress of being used as a compute unit 24/7 with borderline cooling causes it to fail to work properly as a graphics card. Quote The average user, and even the above average user, does not a conceivable need for the kind of horsepower AMD and Intel now offer. There is a sizable market of consumers who aren't interested in purchasing merely what they need. Average and most above average users don't need an i7 or a GTX 1080, either. Nobody needs to buy or play PC Games or the hardware to play them. I don't think "Needs" are really applicable as a barometer to judge high-end chips designed for that marketplace. It's sort of like criticizing a new brand of Caviar by saying "nobody needs to eat caviar" because it ignores that it's hardly aimed at some general market. Intel i7's and even high-end Nvidia 1080ti's practically fly off shelves, as have Ryzen chips, Vega GPUs, and as will Threadripper. it is a market of "Wants dictate" more than "needs dictate".Quote it is a market of "Wants dictate" more than "needs dictate". I so agree with this... I'd love to have the best out there system as a WANT, but I know that what I have is plenty for my NEEDS. I think the fact that I dont like to waste money because Im far from rich also comes into play as well as I can be a penny pincher and as long as a system plays games ok even if all cores are running 95-100% utilization there is no need to spend money on newer hardware! Additionally if your not a gamer, you can get by with a Pentium 4 still with a video card upgrade for video content to play well with streaming movies and other online video content. My daughter for example I gave the choice of an upgrade from her Celeron D 335J 2.8Ghz single-core which has a 8x AGP GeForce 6200 256MB video card, 2GB RAM, and 160GB IDE HDD running Windows XP SP3 fully patched to a newer Quadcore Intel Q6600 2.4Ghz computer. And she said... she was happy with the computer she had and she doesnt feel she needs an upgrade. It plays her internet games just fine and the older game SPORE with no problems. I said are you sure, its way more powerful than the computer your currently using and she said she doesnt see any problem with this computer. It plays games that she likes to play and it plays streaming video from youtube and hulu and netflix with no problems onto her 17" flatscreen. A long time ago ( almost 25 years ago ) this one guy who was 20 years older than me and had been working with computers since the early 1970s warned me about speed. Speed comes at a price and speed can be addicting! He was talking from experience that if you dont expose yourself to TOP of the line computers then you will probably be satisfied with what you already have. You wont have a reference to compare to that suddenly makes your computer that you were satisfied with feel like your in a Model T Ford on the autobahn with everyone else passing you like your standing still in which then your very likely to suddenly have impulse urges to buy a newer faster computer. So if your happy on the back roads with the Model T then stay on them, as for once you turn onto the autobahn and see everyone else zooming by, then you will likely be hooked on speed to have to be like them and as fast as them or faster. He gave me his 386 SX 40Mhz computer and bought a Pentium 60Mhz around 1993. I said cool thanks for the 386 and so what games are you playing that the Pentium 60Mhz will be needed? He paused and said well.... I dont play any games, but I am addicted to fast computers because at work I work with fast computers as a programmer. So to me that 386 is slow. But to you it will be fast since your now able to get away from your slow 286 12Mhz and use this much better 386sx40Mhz. It lit up a light bulb in my head right there ..... " Perception of Speed " ... wow if I had this 286 all my life and never saw any faster computer, Id probably be happy with it because it does what I want and need. But when exposed to faster and more realistic graphics, suddenly the computers and games of years past start to feel old not as fun and I feel a need to play on a faster computer with quicker load times and better graphics. Well for some people like my friend Steve the programmer this can snowball to where the minute you see something better in a computer magazine with all the advertising speed brag hype you have an urge to replace what you have, that you were happy with until exposed to faster and newer either in advertising or hands on in demo or at work as was Steves situation. Prior to that realization I didnt care much about speed.... 286 10Mhz, 12Mhz, and 386 16Mhz, 25Mhz, 33Mhz and 40Mhz clocked CPUs, the games I played felt like they ran the same when same graphics card was used. It was all just will this system run the games I want to play such as Wolfensten 3D, and if it ran them I was happy if it didnt run them I was looking for cheap or free upgrades from those who were bitten by the speed bug who would unload their prior system or pieces and parts inexpensively or free etc. Today I still have this behavior of using old computers as well as taking parts donations from people who no longer have a need for parts after upgraded etc, and I still use my older computer even when I have newer available. Some of it is, why run the newer computer when the older runs whatever I am doing just fine and the other part of it is that I feel that run hours on a computer are like an odometer in a car which eventually leads to failure, so might as well use the older system still while it hasnt fallen way behind the times for what its still currently plenty of processing power for and keep the usage/operating time mileage off of the better newer computer. BUT.... If I need a ton of processing power for a game that needs it, or a program i wrote that is crunching numbers and I want the end result sooner vs later, and I want that 4.0Ghz clock, I can turn on the heavier AMD FX-8350 8-core 4Ghz system and use that as needed. Lastly the older system I have runs on less electricity than the current gaming/crunching computer so I save on my electric bill by using the older system as well. So I guess I am running my older computers until hardware failure or obsolescence of my needs in which they get retired. These days I rarely turn on a computer lesser than a Dual-Core CPU system. As time goes by eventually the older Quadcore systems will follow to where its not economical to run them and never will be needed on a daily basis mainly as the internet or games I run become more complex and they eventually lag out, but I guess I am not in any rush to have the latest and greatest because to me it would be costly. Its cheaper for me to stick with buying reduced cost hardware when better becomes available and I buy a few generations behind the times and able to build what would have been a $1000 computer when parts came out 2 years later for around $300 or $400. Sort of the same as not buying that brand new car for $30,000 but buy the one that is discounted because its old stock and needs to go so I am able to get it at a heavy discount at say $19,000 for a 1 year old but brand new car that just wasnt bought up because more cars made then the demand, so wait to buy up the excess inventory item at much lower than retail new. And with computer hardware there is always excess inventory at bargain prices as say they created 300,000 of a CPU and only sold 289,000 and the remainder 11,000 of them are sold at ever increasing discounts until all is sold or they get destroyed and recycled Why do we want more? Maybe this article will explain this better. Why Employees At Apple And Google Are More Productive https://www.fastcompany.com/3068771/how-employees-at-apple-and-google-are-more-productive Quote Companies like Apple, Netflix, Google, and Dell are 40% more productive than the average company, according to research f Quote “They get more done by 10 a.m. Thursday morning than the others do in a week, but they don’t stop working,” says Mankins. “This difference compounds every year; over a decade, they can produce 30 times more than the rest, with the same number of employees.” So, are the people more productive? Is this relevant?Look up Bain & Company...the team that did the research... You are an inch away from being blocked with NEWS posts... Consider the title of this Post.Patio, it was Intel that decided to use the upcoming astronomical event to draw attention to an effort to eclipse AMD. Pun intended. I had nothing do with it. They never consulted me at all. Many industry watches see this as a major event and speculate Intel must fell there is a threat of losing market share to AMD. As we all know, AMD and Intel designs are NOT pin compatible. Not even close. So it matters to system builders which company to follow. Most likely a small number of people w ill buy such a system for playing games. But those people may also be the IT people who make decisions about what brand of computers to put into the company servers. The server Industry pays a lot of money for up-to-date computer systems. And that is where the speed can make a difference. Here is a recent article from the The Motley Fool: https://www.fool.com/investing/2017/06/21/intel-tries-to-one-up-amd-in-the-cpu-battle.aspx Quote Intel is feeling the heatIntel might hole their big market share. Maybe not. People buying hardware for Games is something I think you've vastly underestimated by effectively dismissing it as a tiny niche of the market. PC Gaming was worth over 36 Billion USD in 2016. Just this past January, Sales research showed that in 2016, the Hardware market exclusively for gaming hardware- including high-end CPUs and GPUs- was worth over 30 billion dollars.; which is a significant chunk of the entire PC hardware industry. People who buy gaming Graphics cards and CPUs are not really statistical outliers anymore, and are themselves a core business. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 10, 2017, 10:22:06 PM People buying hardware for Games is something I think you've vastly underestimated by effectively dismissing it as a tiny niche of the market.I had no idea. Of 160 countries of the world, the top 60 have a GDP over $30 billion. That means about 100 countries have a GDP under $30 billion. So the games buying high power PCs have more money that what about 100 countries have individually. So when I dismiss The game PC market s, it is like as if I would dismiss Ecuador 24.5 billion $ Kazakhstan 24.4 billion $ Slovakia 23.7 billion $ Syria 22.1 billion $ Dominican R. 21.8 billion $ My bad. Just to add some more info on the new chips being released by both sides. It seems that perhaps information was leaked or Intel released the info early as it is being reported on. Found here As you mentioned, Geek-9pm, both are using different sockets. The new Intel CPUs use Socket 2066. The AMD CPU's use a socket called TR4. Intel's Highest-end upcoming chip is the i9 7980XE, using the new Socket 2066. It has 18 cores and 36 threads (!), a standard clock frequency of 2.6Ghz that can turbo boost as high as 4.4Ghz, a 24MB Cache, support for DDR4 Quad Channel RAM, 44 PCI-E Lanes, and a Power consumption rated for 165 Watts. For all this power you need to lay down $1999 USD. That's right- 2 thousand Dollars for JUST the CPU! AMD's highest end offering is the ThreadRipper 1950X. It has 16 Cores and 32 threads, a 3.4Ghz Stock speed that can boost to 4.0Ghz under load with adequate cooling, a 40MB Cache, support for DDR4 Quad Channel RAM, 64 PCI-E Lanes, and a 180 Watt power consumption rating. This one retails for $999. IMO these are ridiculous CPUs; Far overpowered for anything anybody will ever need, pretty much what Geek-9pm was saying. But they are marketed towards vain gamer types; the sort that think that what CPU they have or how many flashy Rainbow LEDs they have in their Case is some kind of Status symbol. Basically, the same type of people who they marketed their special Gaming Edition CPUs to previously, with perhaps a bit of workstation types going for them as well. To me, it's the lower chips that I think are more sensible. I'd also expect Intel to have i5 and i3 chips as well, which I expect to have much more budget-friendly price points. For an interesting perspective, from what I can find Intel's Pentium 4 Extreme Edition CPUs at the top end were sold for about $935 USD in 2003, which adjusting for inflation is equivalent to the buying power of $1,234 USD today. | Answer» No, I did not make up that title and it is not a joke. Rival competitors in the technology sector rarely collaborate. Companies traditionally focus on their own products and services in hopes of gaining so much market share that the other becomes irrelevant or ripe for acquisition. PC-WORLD The Inquirer The say the same thing. Intel and AMD will team up to have a CPU with high performance graphics all on the one chip. Why am I skeptical? For more information, do a Bing search on: Intel and AMD team up Or, try Hëll has frozen over. The AMD Story is number ten. There is also an article on Intel's website. Now if they can just get along to standardize a socket that works for both AMD and INTEL like back in the days 20 or so years ago. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_7 They branched off each in their own socket directions after socket 7. It would be nice to have motherboards that could take either AMD or INTEL CPU's like years ago, however maybe they are so apples to oranges in design that its not possible. May just keep AMD from being irrelevant...AMD and Intel separated in terms of the physical CONNECTION because the technologies diverged such that the AMD processors ran on a different Bus architecture, thus requiring different supporting chips and different things to be supported by the chipset, differences which have only widened up to today. Take note of this: Quote The H-Series CPU will is the first consumer product to take advantage of Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge (EMIB) in order to allow Intel and AMD's components work together, and is also the first mobile processor to use High Bandwith Memory 2 (HBM2). This consumes much less power and takes up less space compared to traditional discrete graphics-based designs using dedicated graphics memory. You can also find more about this on http://www.tomshardware.com/news/intel-emib-interconnect-fpga-chiplet,35316.html If thesis for real, it opens up a new world of interconnection improvements for motherboards with multiple CPU and GPU stuff. | Answer» Apparently free speech does not include the right to prove your are right by using Enginering methods. The Statre of Oriegon laid a fine on a man for presetnly a electrical enginerring issue to the state without permission. After his wife got a ticket based on a red light camera in Beaverton, Oregon, Mats Järlström, a Swedish-born electronics engineer, studied the calculations used to determine the length of the yellow light cycle. He concluded it was too short, because it failed to account for the longer time a driver needed to turn a corner, rather than go straight through the intersection. So he published his research, believing he had the right to do so. Boy was he wrong about being right. Quote "By providing the public with his traffic engineering calculations," the board said, "Järlström engaged in the practice of engineering." And since he didn't have a license issued by the state, he was violating the law, it said. So, EVEN if you know your are right, and your can prove it, you SHALL not speak unless the government grants you a professional licnse to speak. If you liive in Oregon. "I was fined simply for speaking out and was told that I can't truthfully call myself an engineer. What that connection is and what, if any, active role Kaspersky (The company) has is another question. It may be that the FSB has to workaround the Kaspersky Security software and that is why there is an associated Unit Number. | |

I don't need something like photoshop for what I do and even the MS Paint 3D app is more than I need. Glad it's going to stick around even though in the future looks like I'll have to manually install it from the Store instead of it being automatically included. It's sort of interesting that all the sites SAY MS Paint is from 1985, as MS Paint was first introduced in 1995 and replaced Windows Paintbrush. It will be available as a DLoad...I use it myself for screenshots and very basic cutting right angle objects out of screenshots etc. One feature I wish they added to MS Paint was the ability to hold left-click and cut a custom area vs a box or rectangle only. But I guess thats why professionals use the better products out there from adobe etc for that sort of thing. Years ago when wanting to add a friends picture to a custom background I had to GO in and zoom at the pixel level and try to integrate him therewith rounded features that are jagged blocks when zoomed in, but at normal view almost invisible as a retirement card picture to give him when I didnt have access to any better software. He was a Trekkie and was the grounds keeper for the business and so we had him with his riding lawnmower on a Star Trek alien planet with the original Star Trek crew. He got a kick out of it, but it wasnt the best quality graphic editing. INTERESTING I can see some info good as far as crash reporting which they have had for years to make products better to not crash etc... which was optional... which might no longer be optional, but to track software/app activity to me to see peoples behavior even if not tracking specific info but still somewhat anonymous for statistical marketing purposes, that still is discomforting that I am being used for marketing. Its like Market Research, but they dont pay the people for the info they gather from them. Google already does this, but its nice that Google and me have a separation at the browser exit, so when the browser is exited or Google not used, everything else I do is unknown and private. The product they offer is free at the price that they gather info on whats trending in search criteria etc and make money selling this info as well as directing people to paid for top of the search list websites first etc. Years ago I use to get paid money for Marketing Research and it was fun... try new products, rate it, and answer questions to a panel of marketing professionals and get $50 for trying the new flavor of Bubble Gum and giving honest opinions. To me I have 2 issues I guess ... #1 is that its not optional from looking for ways to get around it, and #2 I'm not getting paid for providing them with info that helps them make more money. http://www.express.co.uk/life-style/science-technology/617168/Windows-10-Tracking-Keylogger-Not-Stopped Sighs Nothing to really hide, but another reason why me and Windows 7 and Linux Distros are likely my future more so then Windows 10. I have a brand new Core i3 Dell Laptop that came with it and I havent used it yet. It was one of those deals that was too good to pass up at $279.99 on black friday. I'm still using my ASUS laptop with Celeron M1000 1.8Ghz Dual-Core with Windows 7 when the Dell Core i3 2.1Ghz is a better CPU but Windows 8.x, and Windows 10 feels like nails on a chalk board every time I work with it. Plus to FIND this out makes that sound on the chalk board louder to stay away from it You can disable it all, with a little work. Some stuff doesn't work afterwards however it is all stuff that was never present in Win7 anyway. Personally, I have the diagnostics/telemetry turned off and also have Windows Update set to fully manual on my main desktop and laptop, for example. I'm not sure actually if it tracks stuff OUTSIDE of UWP. It looks like the "over 100 million users" is from CNN, not from Microsoft. So it might be based on some other information source than tracking or anything like that. Now regardless I fully understand their desire for telemetry information- Heck I added telemetry information/logging to the stuff we make- but like you mention Dave that only tracked information regarding our Applications, and we use it for tracking what features/components actually get used, how often, and also can look at it when things go poorly by matching up timestamps with error info. I don't like that I have to strongly assert that I don't want to have information traced, logged, and fired off to their servers, though I can see why as the harder and more technologically inclined a user needs to be the more information they are going to receive about how their software is used. On the desktop and laptop I use primarily, I disabled the Diagnostics and Telemetry services/capability via group policy editor as well as by disabling a few services, along with adjustments like making Windows Update 100% manually handled (I have to start it myself). That article you linked is sensationalist drivel, though; it's from 2 years ago and is very inaccurate. For example it refers to the tracking of questions you type into Cortana as a keylogger and says it applies systemwide. They did not do any research or investigation; that feature can be turned off in the privacy settings and only applied to certain Cortana interaction components.

| 1650. | Solve : Latest Apple iPhone update sparks lawsuit.? |
| Answer» The re is a new class action lawsuit because of a new Apple update that slows down older models of the iPhone. They say it was deliberate. The multi-national company says it was trying to help preserve battery life and avoid PHONES crashing, but some customers say it's a ploy to sell more phones.Comments?A lot of people are blaming apple for this. I BLAME their users and their loyal fanbase, who, predictably, complain each cycle about something like this, and there is often a lawsuit. Whether it be that instance where the phones could be bent or this one where an update is trying to preserve the battery life that they've been using hard for 3 years. They'll complain, some of them allegedly swear off apple but by and large you see them next time around, having gone right ahead and bought the PRODUCT they swore off. If Apple is doing this to get people to move to their latest phones, I don't blame them, because it seems to work. People by and large buy iPhones for the status, and that applies double when it's the "latest and greatest" model- they aren't a product that tends to get used beyond it's sell-by date because when the next one comes out it's no longer cool to have. Mind you- Throttling performance to preserve battery life with aged batteries seems like the sort of design-oriented decision Apple might make anyway. | |
