Solve : Pirate Bay sold, to be based on give-and-take models?

Answer» http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090718/ap_on_re_eu/eu_tec_sweden_pirate_bay

Quote
STOCKHOLM – One of the world's largest filesharing Web sites, The Pirate Bay, is going legal through a series of give-and-take payment models that in some cases may even earn its users a bundle of cash, the new owners said Saturday.

"The more you give, the more you get," said Hans Pandeya, chief executive of Swedish software firm Global Gaming Factory X, which announced last month it was buying the site and would start paying both content providers and copyright holders.

The change in ownership was met with skepticism by the filesharing community who feared that, by taking The Pirate Bay legal, its new operators would start charging them for downloading content such as films, music and computer games, which they had previously accessed for free.

In April, four men connected with the site were sentenced to one-year prison terms for abetting violations of copyright law, and ordered to pay a fine totaling 30 million kronor ($3.8 million). At LEAST THREE of the men claim they haven't owned the site for years.

Pandeya said his company bought the site from a foreign company through lawyers and he doesn't know who the current owners are, but that none of the prosecuted men seemed to be involved.

When the deal was announced, Pirate Bay spokesman and one of defendants, Peter Sunde, said however that he and his associates were pleased with GGF's plans for the site since they felt they couldn't take it any further — lacking both money and resources to do so. Sunde could not be reached for comment Saturday.

Pandeya said The Pirate Bay, whose domain name and related Web sites were bought by Global Gaming Factory X for 60 million kronor, will not become like pure pay sites, such as ITunes Store and Napster.

"For the great majority it will be free of charge, for a minority it will actually make them money, and for a small portion it will cost them," he said.

Pandeya said plans are under way to introduce a monthly fee to be able to use The Pirate Bay, but he said the fee could be worked off by, for example, sharing downloaded content or lending storage capacity to others on their PC's in exchange.

"We know that unless we're able to create REVENUES for the filesharers they'll just move on to the next free, site," he said. "Filesharers are our best friends."

Pandeya also said other give-and-take packages were in the works, but declined to elaborate, saying more details would REVEALED in the next few weeks.

The site, under its new management, is expected to be launched in about a month's time. It will also raise money through advertising and by making network data traffic cheaper and more efficient for internet service providers. This would be done by making the filesharing more local, allowing users in the same city to be interconnected as opposed to swapping data across multiple borders.

GGF claims the site will fully address the legal issues that troubled it before because income will be distributed between filesharers, copyright holders and others involved.

Pandeya said that although no deals have been struck yet, his company is currently in negotiations with some of "the world's largest players" within the music industry. "It's been positive," he said, declining to name the companies involved in the talks.

UPDATE

AMSTERDAM -

The would-be buyer of file-sharing Web site The Pirate Bay has backpedaled in a Dutch court Tuesday, saying that it is uncertain whether the purchase will ever be completed.

Lawyer Ricardo van Doorn says Sweden's Global Gaming Factory X will only buy Pirate Bay if it can turn it into a "legitimate business."

GGF said last month it planned to buy the Pirate Bay domain name and related Web sites for 60 million kronor ($7.8 million), with the deal closing in August.

Van Doorn said Tuesday that it's now conditioned on whether "those assets can be used in a legal manner."

The Dutch court is hearing a civil case brought against The Pirate Bay by a pro-copyright organization.

So this is their "epic win?"

Added an update to the original post.So does this make it legal? I dont think sois piratebay somehow going to be earning some revenue that goes to be paying the royalties?Quote from: computeruler on July 24, 2009, 04:07:31 PM

What's illegal about sharing files?the Pirate Bay

Umm, you may not have noticed, but they have legal files for sharing there.

Judging the book by the majority of files.... you can find a few open source torrents. you just have to wade through the other 99% of files like SUPER COMPACT WINDOZE CD.EXE (40KB) and "Harry Potter DIVX FIRST MOVIE
so many attention diverters... I always wondered about that, don't all naked animals have fur?
Or are they like the grizzly in John Candy's movie? There are some legal torrents on there, but not many. Some Linux distributions use torrents as a secondary DOWNLOAD link or as a main download link to take the load off the servers. I'd personally prefer to download the good old ISO and mount it in VirtualBox

Solve : Microsoft kills Windows 7E, puts IE back in upcoming OS?

Answer» I really WISH, Europe will screw M$ well for this....

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9136168/Microsoft_kills_Windows_7E_puts_IE_back_in_upcoming_OS

Betting that European antitrust regulators will okay its proposal for a "ballot screen" and facing opposition from COMPUTER makers and corporate customers, Microsoft late Friday abandoned plans to ship Windows 7 WITHOUT Internet Explorer (IE).

At the same time, a company executive said Microsoft wasn't happy with having to give equal time to rival browsers. "As you might imagine, it was not easy for Microsoft to accept the idea that we would essentially promote directly competing software from within our flagship product, Windows," said Dave Heiner, Microsoft's deputy general counsel and a company vice president.

Even though officials from the European Commission haven't signed off on Microsoft's proposal to offer customers a CHOICE of rival browsers when they first run Windows 7, the company said it is dropping the special edition once destined for Europe, dubbed Windows 7E.

Microsoft first proposed the Europe-only versions nearly two months ago, one of several major concessions it's made this year to Brussels-based regulators.

"In the wake of last week's developments, as well as continuing feedback on Windows 7 E that we have received from computer manufacturers and other business partners, I'm pleased to report that we will ship the same version of Windows 7 in Europe in October that we will ship in the rest of the world," Heiner said on a company blog Friday night.

Heiner's reference to last week was to Microsoft's proposal, announced July 24, that it would provide a ballot screen in Windows 7, and later on Windows XP and Vista, when Internet Explorer (IE) is set as the default browser. EU antitrust officials had been pushing for such a screen -- which will provide download and informational links to rivals such as Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome and others -- since it filed charges against Microsoft in January. Until last week, Microsoft had resisted adding a ballot to Windows.

"The Commission welcomes this proposal, and will now investigate its practical effectiveness in terms of ensuring genuine consumer choice," said the EU's antitrust agency in a statement July 24.

Microsoft's obviously taken the "welcomes this proposal" to heart, or it knows more than it's telling about progress with the commission toward a final deal. Heiner hinted at the former. "We ... feel encouraged in making this decision by the positive reaction from so many quarters to our ballot screen proposal last week," he said.

Opera Software, the Norwegian browser maker whose December 2007 complaint to the commission sparked the latter's charges that Microsoft was violating the LAW by bundling IE with Windows, had responded favorably to the ballot screen idea. Even so, the company had expressed concerns, as well as the long-shot hope that Microsoft would expand the ballot concept worldwide.

Heiner also admitted that computers makers were unhappy with Windows 7E.At least the EU is willing to do what the United States wouldn't.It is being shipped with IE fully integrated...not stripped out as many were led to believe.
All it takes to be functional is a switch ...That seems to be a nice compromise. Quote

That's right, when sales decline and customers start using other products such as Firefox, simply force your product to be bundled with Windows. Why oh why Microsoft?

Personally, I think Microsoft are getting desperate. They screwed up so badly on IE8 that they are giving out prizes to people who use it. (The thread is on Reddit, somewhere).

Solve : Pirates manage to crack Windows 7 activation?

Answer» http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9136086/Pirates_manage_to_crack_Windows_7_activation

Pirates have cracked Windows 7's product activation just a week after the operating system made RTM and a week before it's slated to reach users, Microsoft confirmed today.

The product key posted on the Web purportedly comes from Lenovo, one of Microsoft's major OEM partners, and allows users to activate downloaded copies of Windows 7 Ultimate RTM (release to MANUFACTURING), which leaked to the Internet last week, shortly after Microsoft announced it had finished the operating system.

According to Windows enthusiast site Neowin, one of the first to report the crack, a Lenovo disk image of Windows 7 leaked to a Chinese Web site, then moved to English-language domains. Pirates proceeded to retrieve the master OEM key and the OEM activation certificate from the .iso file. Microsoft lets major computer makers like Lenovo, Dell and Hewlett-Packard pre-activate new PCs at the factory to save customers the hassle, and provides OEM master keys for that purpose.

Windows 7 uses an updated activation scheme, dubbed OEM Activation 2.1, which is an updated version of the activation software that first appeared in Windows Vista. The technology, ironically, has been the focus of a Microsoft lawsuit filed last January against a former employee charged with stealing company documents related to the anti-piracy software that computer makers use to lock Windows to their PCs.

The crack is not for the faint of heart, as it also requires a hack of the PC's BIOS; Activation 2.1 demands a BIOS that supports the new technology. In fact, forums on SITES such as My Digital Life were full of questions from users unfamiliar with hacking a BIOS.

But scores of users on My Digital Life's forum have reported that the leaked key -- and the process that others laid out to use it -- activated their pirated copies of Windows 7 Ultimate. "Activated 3 computers with SLIC 2.1 (DELL) modified BIOS + DELL certificate for Vista + this key," said a user identified only as "thavmym."

This isn't the first time that Microsoft's copy protection technology has been cracked. Vista's activation has been hacked several times, and in volume sufficient to prompt Microsoft to issue updates that busted the most popular cracks. When it delivered Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), for example, it cracked down on a pair of cracks that pirates had been using to activate downloaded copies of the OS.

Microsoft acknowledged the crack today, but its reaction was in line with past takes on the topic. "We are aware of reports of activation exploits that attempt to circumvent activation and validation in Windows 7," said a company spokeswoman in an e-mail. "[But] Microsoft strongly advises customers not to download Windows 7 from unauthorized sources," she added, then reminded users that "peer-to-peer Web sites exposes users to increased risks, such as viruses, Trojans, and other malware and malicious code."

In May, a leaked copy of Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) posted on file-sharing sites turned out to be infected with a Trojan horse.

Windows 7 is slated for public release Oct. 22, but subscribers to the for-pay TechNet and MSDN services will be able to download the final code, along with legitimate product activation keys, starting next Thursday. With the deals available, why the *censored* would you do this?

If you can afford internet you can afford the update.Microsoft May Block and Blacklist 22TKD OEM-SLP Product Key for Windows 7 Crack

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/08/01/microsoft-may-block-and-blacklist-22tkd-oem-slp-product-key-for-windows-7-crack/

The just-leaked Windows 7 Ultimate SLP-OEM product key, i.e. 22TKD-F8XX6-YG69F-9M66D-PMJBM, may goes down in history to have the same fate with famous Windows XP corporate volume license product key, FCKGW-RHQQ2-YXRKT-8TG6W-2B7Q8, which was also leaked in warez no Windows XP activation VL copy by devils0wn 35 days before official retail release of Windows XP on August 28, 2001.

The FCKGW serial key is now obsolete and has been blacklisted by Microsoft since August 2004 with the INTRODUCTION of Windows GENUINE Advantage (WGA) validation program. The 22TKD SLP-OEM product key, which been retrieved from a leaked Lenovo Windows 7 OEM preactivated DVD image, will be blacklisted and blocked, probably via WGA validation process (now together with Windows Product Activation or WPA is known as Windows Activation Technologies or WAT), according to Genuine Windows blog.

The key is for use with Windows 7 Ultimate RTM product that is meant to be pre-installed by the OEM on new PCs to be shipped later this year. As such, the use of this key requires having a PC from the manufacturer it was issued to. We’ve worked with that manufacturer so that customers who purchase genuine copies of Windows 7 from this manufacturer will experience no issues validating their copy of Windows 7. At the same time we will seek to alert customers who are using the leaked key that they are running a non-genuine copy of Windows. It’s important to note that no PCs will be sold that will use this key.

The now famous 22TKD OEM-SLP product key has been the first known Windows 7 RTM activation crack that done properly, unlike the previous undesirable cracks that make use of frankenbuild style Windows 7 RC or even Windows Vista license files to replace original Windows 7 version, and uses the corresponding product key to activate Windows 7 RTM as Windows 7 RC or Windows Vista. The OEM-SLP product key, when paired with proper SLIC table in BIOS and OEM certificate, will activate Windows 7 offline instantly without going online to contact any activation server, just like any genuine copy of Windows pre-installed on any OEM PC.

It’s interesting what will happen when the product key is blacklisted via WGA. Technically, a SLP-OEM product key cannot be blocked without modification on Windows 7 validation code, unlikely as Windows 7 already been RTMed, and any change may affect other SLP-OEM keys for other computer manufacturers too. As such, WGA validation may detect a system that uses 22TKD for activation, and prompt that the system is not genuine, but the system will keep activated. Instead, WAT may look for a hack or activation exploit to present before blacklisting the key.

Windows 7 already includes an improved ability to detect hacks, also known as activation exploits, and alert customers who are using a pirated copy. There is a hack that is said to enable, when paired with the leaked key, a system to install and use a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate. Both the hack and the key are indications that a copy of Windows may not be genuine. The Windows Activation Technologies included in Windows 7 are designed to handle situations such as this one, and customers using these tools and methods should expect Windows to detect them.

Anyway, even if the leaked 22TKD OEM product key is blacklisted, ultimately a unblockable OEM-SLP product keys for Windows 7 that delivers with computer machine will be leaked when the goods are shipped in OCTOBER.

Solve : Twitter shut down by denial of service attack?

Answer»

from: http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2009/08/twitter-apparently-down/

Quote

Twitter was shut down for hours Thursday morning by what it described as an “ongoing” denial-of-service attack, silencing millions of Tweeters. It was the first major outage the service has suffered in months and possibly the first ever due to sabotage. The outage appeared to begin mid-morning, EST, and affected users around the world. After about three hours, the service was coming back online in fits and starts (updated).

The first official word about the outage came in a terse statement on Twitter’s status blog: “Site is down — We are determining the cause and will provide an update shortly.” That was followed by a more relaxed post on the main Twitter blog by co-founder Biz Stone, which nevertheless gave no indication of how the defense was going — or how long the service might be down.

“On this otherwise happy Thursday morning, Twitter is the target of a denial of service attack,” wrote Stone. “Attacks such as this are malicious efforts orchestrated to DISRUPT and make unavailable services such as online banks, credit card payment gateways, and in this case, Twitter for intended customers or users. We are defending against this attack now and will continue to update our status blog as we continue to defend and later investigate.”

In a denial-of-service attack, a malicious party barrages a server with so many requests that it can’t keep up, or causes it to reset. As a result, legitimate users can only access the server very slowly — or not at all, as appears to be the case here.

Not only was the site down, but client applications that depend on the Twitter API could also not connect to the service, creating a complete Twitter blackout. According to June ComScore numbers Twitter has more than 44 MILLION registered users and its user base has been GROWING rapidly for months as it becomes better known in the mainstream.

Solve : WiFi Hotspots, Move Over -- LED (Light Emitting Diode) Hotspots On The Horizon!?

Answer» http://www.insidetech.com/news/3266-researchers-want-led-hot-spots-to-replace-wi-fi?referral=IT_nlet

Quote
Jason Mick / Daily Tech

October 08, 2008

Solid-state lighting is one of the hottest topics in the tech industry, and with good reason. The Department of Energy is sponsoring a $20M USD “L Prize” for advances in LED lighting, a type of light which uses solid-state components (diodes). The research is a big deal as lighting currently consumes 22 percent of the electricity in the U.S. If the DOE accomplishes its goals of reducing lighting energy use by 50 percent, it would save billions of dollars and reduce environmental impact.

New research from Boston University’s College of Engineering, funded by a National Science Foundation grant, indicates that LEDs may be not only the integral lighting COMPONENT of the future, but may also form the BACKBONE of future wireless networks.

BU Engineering Professor Thomas Little describes the new research, stating, “Imagine if your computer, iPhone, TV, radio and thermostat could all communicate with you when you walked in a room just by flipping the wall light switch and without the usual cluster of wires. This could be done with an LED-based communications network that also provides light – all over existing power lines with low power consumption, high reliability and no electromagnetic interference. Ultimately, the system is expected to be applicable from existing illumination devices, like swapping light bulbs for LEDs.”

The primary goal of the research is to develop LEDs that do exactly that—transmit information wirelessly via controlled blinking.

Little continues, “This is a unique opportunity to create a transcendent technology that not only enables energy efficient lighting, but also creates the next generation of secure wireless communications. As we switch from incandescent and compact florescent lighting to LEDs in the coming years, we can simultaneously build a faster and more secure communications infrastructure at a modest cost along with new and unexpected applications.”

Professor Little and his colleagues imagine LED lighting in the room being hooked up to computer circuitry, which uses existing lighting to implement a wireless network which provides data to computers, personal digital assistants, television and radio reception, telephone connections and thermostat temperature control. Prototypes of the new network design, according to Professor Little, should start at around 1 to 10 Mbps. Better yet, bandwidth would be GREATER than in existing radio frequency (RF)-driven networks.

In the new network, each LED light bulb would act as an access point. Another perk of the new design is beefed up security. Unlike RF networks, the new signal would not pass through walls or other opaque objects. This would help prevent snooping and connection theft. The new system would also use much less power than RF, as solid state lighting is energetically cheaper to the strong radio signals needed for wireless internet.

The flickering which drove the network would be performed so fast the human eye could not see it. The network would ideally be able to operate outdoors as well as indoors. The FIRST test deployment may be outdoors, with a likely candidate being car interiors. Professor Little continues, “This technology has many implications for automobile safety. Brake lights already use LEDs, so it’s not a stretch to outfit an automobile with a sensor that detects the brake lights of the car in front of it and either alerts an inattentive driver or actively slows the car.”

While the technology seems very promising, one quandary is how to make the communication bidirectional. Professor Little and his team have not elaborate on this tricky point yet in the initial press. In order to send data requests, you would need a means of receiving light from devices such as cell phones or laptops, however, you ideally would want to avoid having to have a bright blinking transmitter on your device walls covered in sensors.
Very interesting.....

That's what I would like to know.I remember a time when it seemed like 28.8 kb/sec. was the fastest transmission on a phone line. I'd have to dig up the exact solution, but an engineer at Bell Labs came up with a solution that pushed dial-up out to the 56 k limit.

From what I read a lot of this is possible because it's being done a lot in the new HTML 5, most of which only the latest browsers support, so they're really developing this with all the latest code.

Solve : Best Buy lists well-equipped Acer laptop for $299?

Answer»

Best Buy has listed a 15-inch Acer laptop with relatively robust specifications for $299. But try GETTING your hands on one.

Though listed among the "new arrivals" on Best Buy's Web site, it is currently not available at stores or online. But there is anecdotal evidence of its existence. Very-recent user comments indicate that people have purchased the laptop and other stores, such as Wal-Mart Stores and Amazon (which shows it in stock), list it at a higher price.

Quote

And the specifications? An AMD Athlon 64 processor, 15.6-inch WXGA display, 2GB DDR2 memory, DVD-RW drive, 160GB hard disk drive, ATI Radeon Xpress 1200 graphics, 802.11b/g wireless, 10/100 Ethernet LAN, and Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic Edition. Pretty close to mainstream-laptop hardware with the exception of the low-end AMD-ATI silicon and the older "g" wireless.

LinkBest Buy has a very good "Rain Check" policy. Solve : Mozilla delivers first preview of Firefox 3.6?

Answer» http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9136404/Mozilla_delivers_first_preview_of_Firefox_3.6

Mozilla released Firefox 3.6 Alpha 1 on Friday, the first public preview of what the company says will be a minor browser upgrade currently slated to ship this November.

Codenamed "Namoroka" -- the name taken from a national park on the island of Madagascar -- Firefox 3.6 is set to wrap in the next few months as an interim step toward Firefox 3.7, a more substantial update tentatively scheduled for 2010.

As it regularly has in the past, Mozilla warned off most users from trying the alpha. "Please note that this release is intended for developers and testers only," Mozilla said in announcing 3.6's availability.

Firefox 3.6 is based on Gecko 1.9.2, the in-DEVELOPMENT upgrade to Mozilla's rendering engine.

According to Mozilla, Firefox 3.6 Alpha 1 includes speed improvements to the TraceMonkey JavaScript engine, startup speed tweaks and several under-the-hood changes.

In an interview last month, Mike Beltzner, the director of Firefox, said Mozilla's internal and VOLUNTEER developers were trying to decide whether the follow-on to Firefox 3.5 would be a smaller-sized release that would simply "make 3.5 better," or if it would become a more ambitious upgrade, similar to 3.5's improvements over 2008's Firefox 3.0.

"We're seeing a lot of the competition doing [the former]," Beltzner said, referring to rivals such as Google, which has been aggressively updating Chrome.

Some have criticized Mozilla for falling behind rivals like Chrome and Apple's Safari in speed tests, or playing catch-up to other competitors, such as Internet EXPLORER, in areas like private browsing, or to Chrome in its ability to "sandbox" each tab.

The debate between making Firefox 3.6 a major upgrade that would involve "wholesale technology change" and "take a fairly long time," said Beltzner, and a minor update that would involve fewer changes and result in a shorter development cycle ended with Mozilla going for the latter. "Namoroka is to be an incremental release, building upon the success of Firefox 3.5," Mozilla said in its Firefox 3.6 public roadmap, which was revised as recently as Saturday.

The schedule that Mozilla has laid out for Firefox 3.6 has the first beta shipping in early September and a second later that month, then a release candidate would available by mid-to-late October. "Aiming at final release for November 2009," Mozilla said in its roadmap.

Among the goals for the upgrade are major performance improvements to browser startup and several common tasks, such as opening new tabs and loading bookmarked pages. Mozilla also wants to customize browser behavior based on the user's past history, add the ability to search for an EXISTING tab and enhance the browser's built-in download manager to support chores like deleting and moving downloaded files.

The Windows version of Firefox 3.6 will also support some Windows 7 features, INCLUDING "Aero Peek," a new addition to the operating system that lets users look behind any open window to see the desktop.

Firefox 3.6 Alpha 1 can be downloaded for Windows, Mac and Linux from Mozilla's developer center. I downloaded Firefox 3.6 nightly a couple days ago from the Mozilla FTP. Did a youtube vid about it. It seems like there will be some cool features, like convert a website to application. That is already an addon for FF 3, though

Solve : F-Secure Advice To Stop Using Adobe Reader Due to Security Vulnerability?

Answer» http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/07/27/f-secure-advice-to-stop-using-adobe-reader-due-to-security-vulnerability/

The increase of the PDF format’s popularity has simultaneously increased the demand for the free Adobe Reader by the famous Adobe software. The high demand of Adobe Reader program has triggered attention from hackers. The CHIEF research officer of the famous Finnish security expert F-Secure, Mikko Hypponen, has highlighted in the recent RSA Conference 2009 in San Francisco that Adobe Reader has replaced Microsoft Word to become the popular TARGET attack by hackers. Mikko Hypponen has recommended that users should consider using other alternative programs instead to read and view PDF files.

According to Mikko Hypponen, of the targeted attacks so far this year, more than 47 percent of them exploit holes in Acrobat Reader while six vulnerabilities have been discovered that target the program. This is a critical figure indicating serious security problem in this program. Mikko Hypponen also ADDED that in 2008, the favored targeted attack vector was Microsoft Word, which had 15 known vulnerabilities (COMPARED to Acrobat Reader’s 19) and which represented 34.5 percent of the attacks (compared to 28.6 percent for Acrobat Reader).

Adobe Reader is amongst the popular and favorite tools used by many users which include businessmen, POLITICIANS and also many high-ranking individuals. The vulnerable security of the program will cause substantial damages if it is not managed and overcome immediately. Hackers might make use of the vulnerabilities and access high ranking individuals’ systems to steal important documents or spy on their PCs.

Users are advised to update their Adobe Reader from time to time to make sure important security updates have been installed to their version. Hypponen did not recommend a PDF reader, but said Acrobat Reader alternatives are listed on the PDFReaders.org Web site. Readers can refer to our earlier post highlighting on some alternatives to Adobe Reader (http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/06/22/alternatives-to-adobe-acrobat-reader/) which they can also consider.

Solve : Microsoft Admits Linux OS (particularly Ubuntu & Red Hat) is Competition?

Answer»

Linux has been cutting into Microsoft's market share for some time now, but up until recently, it was difficult to get Microsoft to admit as much. But in a recent filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Microsoft for the first time named a pair of Linux distributors -- Red Hat and Canonical -- as COMPETITORS to its Windows CLIENT business.

"Client faces strong competition from well-established companies with differing approaches to the PC market," Microsoft said in the filing. "Competing commercial software products, including variants of Unix, are supplied by competitors such as Apple, Canonical, and Red Hat."

Microsoft went on to reference netbooks, noting that Linux has gained "some acceptance," noting that "competitive pressures lead OEMs to reduce costs and new, lower-price PC form-factors gain adoption."

Canonical makes the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution, known for its ease of use and often RECOMMENDED to users new to open source OSes.
......................................
Article from Maximum PCThe newer versions and how much easier they are to use compared to a true Linux OS is a big selling point. It doesn't make much sense to get an alternate OS and then SPEND millions on training your employees how to use it. The more "Windows like" they become the more casual users they will gain and that EVENTUALLY spills over into the business industry.

Security vendors Symantec and McAfee will be shelling out a combined $750,000, while creating more transparency about consumer subscription terms and renewal policies as part of a settlement agreement authorized by New York's attorney general.

The $750,000 penalty was issued as part of a combined settlement after Symantec and McAfee were found to have renewed consumers' software subscriptions WITHOUT their knowledge or authorization. Under the terms of the settlement, both Symantec and McAfee will have to make detailed disclosures to consumers about subscription terms and RENEWALS, and each will be required to pay $375,000 in PENALTIES and costs.

Solve : Microsoft to rush out emergency IE patch?

Answer» http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9135904/Microsoft_to_rush_out_emergency_IE_patch

Microsoft is taking the unusual step of rushing out TWO emergency security patches ahead of its regularly scheduled updates on Aug. 11.

The patches will include a critical fix for Internet Explorer as well as a related Visual Studio patch rated "moderate" urgency by Microsoft.

"The Internet Explorer BULLETIN will provide defense-in-depth changes to Internet Explorer to help provide additional PROTECTIONS for the issues addressed by the Visual Studio bulletin," Microsoft said in a blog posting late Friday.

The patches are set to be released on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. West coast time.

Microsoft didn't say exactly what it was fixing. The company typically doesn't rush out these "out-of-band" emergency updates unless the bug is being exploited by cyber criminals; however, in this case the flaws being patched are not being leveraged in attacks, according to Microsoft.

The problem appears to lie in a widely used Windows component called the Active Template Library (ATL). According to security researcher Halvar Flake, this flaw is also to blame for an ACTIVEX bug that Microsoft identified earlier this month. Microsoft issued a kill-bit patch for the problem on July 14, but after looking into the bug, Flake determined that the patch didn't fix the underlying vulnerability, so new attacks are possible.

Whatever the issue, the new patch should be a top priority for IT staff next week. "When Microsoft GOES to an out-of-band patch, I think it's sensible for people to apply it," said Roger Thompson, chief research officer with AVG Technologies.

Microsoft didn't give a reason for the rushed update but it may be trying to stay ahead of any public disclosure at next week's Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas. The emergency updates are set to be released the day before the Black Hat Briefings, where researchers Mark Dowd, Ryan Smith and David Dewey will talk about browser security issues.

According to security experts, thousands of Web sites have been used to launch on-line attacks that exploit the ActiveX vulnerability patched in July. The flaw was first reported to Microsoft more than a year ago. Thanks Broni.

HONESTLY really surprised he hasn't sold it yet, maybe he has bigger plans set for it.I cannot think of much more he could possibly integrate that wouldnt make users sick of it, I can see it (hope im wrong) to be covered with pointless WEB adds.I doubt you'll see it "covered with pointless web adds". Hopefully, the volume of ads won't have to become much greater than now. Some advertising is unavoidable unless they go to a fee-based subscription approach, like classmates.com, which is something I doubt very much will happen. Solve : What Google Chrome will mean for cyber-security?

Answer» http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20327176.700-what-google-chrome-will-mean-for-cybersecurity.htmlGoogle is making a LOT of promises on this OS. Personally I'm with what a lot of other people are saying on the INTERNET, an OS is no simple feat, even for a company like Google. Even if it is virus free I don't see a lot of people even considering converting over for 5+ years.

People saying that Google OS is the Microsoft killer IMO don't know the history of operating systems. Getting good driver support alone is going to take years.I have to agree. An OS change is a bit more to ask people then changing search engines or changing browsers- it changes the way they do everything on their PC. And it RAISES the question, of wether this new OS will deliver on anything but internet features. Windows, as we all know, as well as most other OS's out there, were "born" before the net and were made to work with the net. I think that Google is taking a bold step in building a OS around the concept of the net, and really it makes you wonder if they were paying attention when SUN Failed to re-introduce the "whole Server->Dumb terminal" topology that permeates around the time of the VAX-VMS; while we can't deny that it is an intriguing concept to build an OS around internet connectivity and features, it stands to reason that that connection will not always be there and in such times the OS would need to "cope"- other OS's simply work properly without the ability to connect. But what will google chrome do? Will it require a connection?

And as was said the only reason windows got driver support was because it became popular; people started asking for the drivers, and asking when the companies would have them; the question is, will the comparatively small NUMBER of google OS users be a loud enough voice to get the big peripheral vendors and motherboard manufacturs, such as Nvidia, ATI, ASUS, etc, to spend their money on drivers for Google Chrome; this is, of course, assuming that google chrome even supports the concent of drivers...My uncle was telling me about this, and he said that microsoft is scared. But after reading that, I dont think they should be. Its based on the web, so it doesnt sound like it will be the best for gaming. I think I will stick with windows until I see otherwise. Agreed with nathan and bc.

Solve : Adobe doles out bug-filled PDF Reader to users?

Answer» http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9135687/Adobe_doles_out_bug_filled_PDF_Reader_to_users

It still offers Reader 9.1 for download; users at risk without critical updates, says Secunia

Adobe delivers an out-of-date version of Reader to users who download the popular application from its Web site, a security company warned today.

The edition Adobe currently offers includes at least 14 security vulnerabilities that have been patched by the company in the last two months.

Danish vulnerability tracking vendor Secunia first noticed that Adobe was offering an outdated Reader when users of its Personal Software Inspector (PSI) utility -- which SCANS Windows PCs for unpatched applications -- started complaining when the tool said they were running a vulnerable version, even though they had just downloaded the PDF viewer.

"There was some confusion about Adobe Reader," said Mikkel Winther, the manager of the PSI PARTNER program. "Users had downloaded the latest Reader, but still PSI was telling them that it was vulnerable."

At first, Secunia suspected that PSI was throwing off a "false positive," but that wasn't the case. "Adobe.com ships software with known vulnerabilities," Winther said.

The version now hosted on Adobe's Web site, said Winther, is Reader 9.1, an edition that was released March 10 to plug several holes, including one that had been actively exploited by hackers since at least Jan. 9, 2009.

Adobe has issued two security updates since then. The first, released May 12, patched another "zero-day" bug in Reader, while the second, issued June 9, fixed at least 13 critical flaws reported by outside researchers and secretly patched an unspecified number of bugs found by Adobe's own security team.

Computerworld confirmed that Adobe's Web site offers Reader 9.1 to users who download the application.

According to Adobe, that's normal practice. "Adobe Reader 9.1 for Windows is the most recent full installer of the PRODUCT," said a company spokesman. "Adobe Reader 9.1.1 and 9.1.2 for Windows are patches that require Adobe Reader 9.1 to be present. This is the reason users are offered Adobe Reader 9.1 via the 'Get Adobe Reader' page on Adobe.com."

"Adobe does have the Adobe Updater, which will eventually update Reader to the patched versions," said Winther, "but sometimes it takes days or weeks for the updater to come up." By default Adobe's updater pings the company server once a week.

Adobe's practice leaves users vulnerable to hackers who rely on malformed PDF documents to hijack PCs, said Winther. If a user RECEIVES a PDF -- likely as an attachment to an e-mail message -- but doesn't have Reader installed, then downloads and installs Reader 9.1 from the company's site, he can be successfully attacked by exploits fixed in Version 9.1.1 and 9.1.2.

"PC users need to patch all their vulnerable programs and they need to do so as FAST as possible after the patch has been issued from the vendor," said Winther. "Failing to do so is playing Russian Roulette.... It is only a question of time, and luck, when your system will be compromised."

Winther urged users who have recently downloaded and installed Reader to manually update the application by selecting "Check for Updates" from the "Help" menu. Alternately, they can download and run Secunia's PSI tool to locate any outdated software.

Solve : Linux booted in one second?

Answer»
Boot times have shortened to around 30 seconds with Windows 7, but now there's some Linux jockeys who have figured out how to cold boot a computer from nothing to operational status in one second. Yes, it's a tech demo, and they're booting an embedded system with minimal drivers, so it's not a full Windows-like environment. But this proves that short boot times are indeed possible.

but of course! DOS 3.11 boots ALMOST instantly, too.DOS 3.11....or Windows ? ?both

although DOS 3.11 boots faster. on a 386 it really flies!30 seconds? I'm running windows Xp service pack 2 and it boots in about 10 - 15 seconds BeOS is pretty quick too. it can boot a 1ghz/512mb pc in less than 20 seconds, depending on how long post takes.
My vista box takes about 20 seconds to boot after post. Post takes about 1 1/2 minutes. I think somethings screwed up in my bios. Good to see ya BACK Wefro...Quote from: michaewlewis on July 16, 2009, 12:35:07 PM

This sounds like it could be a dying hard drive, you have alot of bios addons, for instance a RAID PCI card or similar, or you have quick boot turned off in the BIOS. If you have quick boot turned off, it will test the RAM more slowly, several times at POST.Quote from: Kurtiskain on July 20, 2009, 05:02:48 AM

Ya, I've looked at just about everything in the bios and haven't found anything glaring. I don't think I have any bios addons. I've honestly never heard of them. I hadn't thought about it being a hard drive, though, because I've got a raid 1 array and an extra drive for BACKUPS. I guess I could yank the cables from the drives and see how long it takes to post..... thanks for the tips.I don't CARE until they can do this 'typically', that means repeated and with full functionality.

I can TALK to aliens with linux, who cares though....

Solve : Cash machines hacked.....?

Answer» http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20227135.700-cash-machines-hacked-to-spew-out-card-details.htmlWhat would this world be if these people put their talents to good use???
Excellent article.Yeah...imagine the good that would come from them exchanging hats.I always wondered about something like this. I've always known they were running Windows on the ATMs here, but I'm surprised they build ATMs off something as vulnerable as Windows. You'd EXPECT banks would have the sense to use something a little more proprietary and secure.Quote

l1nux r00lz! I was THINKING more of a UNIX core.

Many years ago, I STOPPED for cash at a local GAS station. The owners told me that a tech had just been there, and the ATM was still out of service. I looked, anyway, a there was a maintenance menu! A menu! I am not a haxxor, but don't present me with a menu if you don't want me to mess with your stuff.

I messed with it. I'd like to report that the ATM became a slot machine and began spewing cash, but no -- it went out of maintenance mode, and the screen went dark. I was about to LEAVE, thinking I'd really futzed it, when it came back on line in normal mode, and I was able to properly get cash.

So much for my crime spree. Quote from: Aegis on June 20, 2009, 11:01:03 AM

Funny you mention that. More than once I've seen an ATM here where the ATM software had crashed and it was sitting at the Windows desktop. I know they have a keyboard and mouse inside the machine for the techs, but I have yet to encounter one with a touchscreen that was at the desktop... oh the fun I could have.heh, I can see, if it was spewing out cash- the attendants would look at you quizzically-

and you could just say- "just making a little withdrawal" I was in a mall once, and I saw an ATM machine with a "critical system error"...it was pretty funny.Warning! Cash Overflow!

No, normally they say, "I love the taste of plastic in the morning" and keep your card. There was an atm with a bsod lolhah yeah I saw that! silly windows 95

If you base your CONCLUSION solely on population, then obviously they would have more INTERNET users. But, the fact is they have had fewer than in the U.S., as the article says. And, China is just now nearing the point where they will surpass the U.S.; it's projected to happen later this year.

And, I might add, common sense would not lead to the conclusion that China would have had more Internet users all along. Why? Here's the answer, which, in my opinion, is OBVIOUS: Standard of living in the People's Republic of China.

Oh...That was the projected internet users of China China blocked the Internet completely in a certain provence a few days ago after the riots there. They blocked Twitter all over the country.Quote from: kpac on July 08, 2009, 08:21:02 AM

Solve : Java JRE 6 Update 16 is out?

Answer» http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jspHmm, I just got Update 15 yesterday (Win XP) and today (Win Vista) via Java updates. The lag time in their automatic updates is a bit puzzling.I don't run Java Updater at all. Simply another worthless startup.
Since you use computer every day, all these forums are your Updater Actually, my delayed updating appears to be due to the setting in my Java Control Panel; it was set to only check monthly for updates. It can be set to weekly or daily.

But, YES, disabling it would be one less program that starts during Windows startup. However, I know some people find http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp confusing. For that reason, I'd be reluctant to advise people to disable the automatic update. I can tell you right away from working a lot with infected computers, that 90% of those people, who have Java update running as a startup, their Java is out of date Java.com still has Java 6 Update 15 as the LATEST version. [Link]
I wonder why Java's own SITE is out of date but Sun's site is not. There was only one issue fixed with Update 16, and it concerns only DEVELOPERS.

Solve : Who's hacking your PC??

Answer»
Watch a Hollywood film and it'll depict hackers as fast-talking American kids – pale faced, COKE swilling, super-smart and capable of doing the impossible. This is, of COURSE, a fiction.

If you were a career computer criminal, would you choose to base yourself in a country with mature computer crime laws and strong-arm enforcers? No. You'd want to be somewhere comparatively lawless. If you're looking for hackers, look east – towards China and Russia – and you'll be barking up the right tree.

I saw a special on TV last week about how the US SELLS old computers from North America to China, Ghana and India by the ship load. They are SUPPOSED to be destroyed HERE due to the sensitive data on them but the cost of doing it in an environmental friendly manner are very high. In the right hands these old computers are an identity thief's dream.
US security details found dumped in Ghana

I'd like to think that Megan Fox is hacking my computer......and putting all her sensitive data into the com -- oh, NEVER mind!

I'm pretty sure that it would be me putting the sensitive data into the com.... you're right, never mind...

You'd have to be some kind of monk to observe those rules.
...or mental...So now heat can do that too? WeirdI'm surprised one of the rules doesn't simply say, "AVOID having too much fun, it can cause chemical inbalances. if you think your having too much fun and/or may be in a pleasant mood, make sure to drink a BC cheese drink."
Please.....no cheese drinks!!Quote

Oh, please -- those rules aren't all that excessive.

I think a person who is reasonably active, in reasonable good health, and with a decent diet probably has less worry, but why is it nonsense?

The briefs vs. boxers has been around for years -- again, probably doesn't affect most people, but it makes a difference for some men.I like to just let it hang loose.

Good for you.
