| Answer» Anybody using the very popular Google READER Notifier extension for Firefox should probably remove it immediately, as it is now tracking your browsing and displaying ads in your status bar without your consent. Despicable. Link Google MUST be stuck for money, like everyone else these days.I haven't seen that in mine yet but this is bad and I SURE hope he will feel a big backlash from this. I THINK it's important to mention that is's not Google doing this. | 1752. | Solve : Microsoft admits new ActiveX zero-day bug? |
| Answer» http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9135471/Microsoft_admits_new_ActiveX_zero_day_bug For the second time in a week, Microsoft is warning users that hackers are exploiting an unpatched, critical bug in a company-made ActiveX control, putting people running INTERNET Explorer (IE) at risk. The company has been busy lately acknowledging "zero-day" VULNERABILITIES. Today's admission was the third in the last two MONTHS, and the fifth since February. According to the security advisory Microsoft released early Monday, the vulnerability is in Office Web Components, a set of ActiveX controls for publishing Office content to the Web, and for displaying that content in IE. The bug is in the ActiveX control that displays Excel spreadsheets within IE, Microsoft said. The timing of the disclosure was particularly awkward for Microsoft. Top executives spent much of Monday morning touting the new Office 2010, which will release simultaneously next year with Office Web, scaled-down online versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Users running Office XP, Office 2003, Internet Security and Acceleration Server (ISA) 2004, ISA 2006 and Office Small Business Accounting 2006 are at risk from attack through IE, Microsoft said. It classified the bug as a "critical" threat. "This vulnerability could be used for remote code execution in a 'browse and get owned' scenario," said Fermin Serna of the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) in a blog entry today. Hackers are now exploiting the bug in the wild, Microsoft admitted. As in its warning of last week, Microsoft again said the most likely attack scenario would involve a malicious Web site hosting the exploit. U.K.-based Sophos echoed that with some specifics today, saying that it has found several sites, "mostly hosted in China that serve the exploit as a part of a Web exploit kit." People running non-Microsoft browsers, such as Mozilla's Firefox or Google's Chrome, are not at risk, as they don't support ActiveX. Users with Office 2007 are not vulnerable to attack, at least by default, although they may be if they have manually downloaded and installed Office Web Components 11, the version normally bundled with Office 2003. "[We're] working to develop a security update," confirmed Dave Forstrom, an MSRC spokesman. He did not offer up a release date, however. "This update will be released once it reaches an appropriate level of quality for broad distribution," Forstrom said in a entry on the MSRC blog. In lieu of a patch, users can protect themselves by setting two "kill bits" to block Office Web Components from running in IE. Since setting ActiveX kill bits can be dangerous -- it requires editing the Windows registry -- Microsoft has again created an automated tool to do the heavy LIFTING. The so-called "Fix it" tool can be downloaded from Microsoft's support site. Microsoft's next regularly-scheduled security updates are due tomorrow, when it expects to roll out a half-dozen bulletins. The company has already promised to PUSH a kill bit update for last week's ActiveX bug, but was unsure Monday whether it would be able to do the same for the newest vulnerability. All the more reason to use Firefox. All computers here were updated with an ActiveX update and other updates last night.Microsoft patches 9 bugs, leaves one open for hackers http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9135517/Microsoft_patches_9_bugs_leaves_one_open_for_hackersHmm well that's unfortunate. Well as Kpac mentioned, yet another good reason to be running Firefox. | |

| 1757. | Solve : McAfee false-positive glitch fells PCs worldwide? |
| Answer» http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/07/03/mcafee_false_positive_glitch/ IT admins across the globe are letting out a collective groan after servers and PCs running McAfee VirusScan were brought down when the anti-virus program attacked their core system files. In some cases, this caused the machines to display the dreaded blue screen of death. Details are still coming in, but forums here and here show that it's affecting McAfee customers in Germany, Italy, and elsewhere. A UK-based REG reader, who asked to remain anonymous because he was not authorized by his employer to speak to the press, said the glitch simultaneously leveled half of a customer's 140 machines after they updated to the latest virus signature file. "Literally half of the machines were down with this McAfee anti-virus message IDing valid programs as having this trojan," the IT consultant said. "Literally half the office switched off their PCs and were just twiddling their thumbs." When the consultant returned to his office he was relieved that his own laptop, which also uses VirusScan, was working normally. Then, suddenly, when it installed the latest McAfee DAT file, his computer was also smitten. The anti-virus program identified winvnc.exe and several other legitimate files as malware and ATTEMPTED to quarantine them. With several core system files out of commission, the MACHINE was rendered an expensive paperweight. A McAfee representative in the US didn't immediately respond to PHONE calls seeking comment. Friday is a HOLIDAY for many US employees in observance of Saturday's Independence Day. Based on anecdotes, the glitch appears to be caused when older VirusScan engines install DAT 5664, which McAfee seems to have pushed out in the past 24 hours. Affected systems then begin identifying a wide variety of legitimate - and frequently crucial - system files as malware. Files belonging to Microsoft Internet Explorer, drivers for Compaq computers, and even the McAfee-associated McScript.exe were being identified as a trojan called PWS!hv.aq, according to the posts and interviews. We're still trying to determine how widespread this false-positive glitch is being felt and whether people have found any reliable fixes. If you have insight, please leave a comment below. ® lol good thing I only use mcafee for a firewall I have all the other features turned off. You should stay away from McAfee altogether. | |

| 1761. | Solve : Hackers exploit second DirectShow zero-day using thousands of hijacked sites? |
| Answer» http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9135210/Hackers_exploit_second_DirectShow_zero_day_using_thousands_of_hijacked_sites Thousands of legitimate Web sites hacked over the weekend are launching drive-by attacks using an exploit of a second critical unpatched vulnerability in Windows' DirectShow component, a Danish security company said today. According to CSIS Security Group, the bug is in an ActiveX control, the "msvidctl.dll" file, that streams video content. "CSIS has captured more systematic drive-by attacks exploiting a vulnerability in Microsoft DirectShow," the company warned on its Web site. "Thousands of Web sites have been compromised over the weekend and malicious script has been INSERT[ed]," it added (Google TRANSLATE translation). The script re-routes users to a malicious site, which in turn downloads and launches a multi-exploit hacker toolkit that includes the DirectShow attack code. DirectShow is a part of Windows' DirectX graphics infrastructure. Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003 are all vulnerable to attack, CSIS said. Another Danish security firm, Copenhagen-based Secunia, ranked the vulnerability as "Extremely critical," its highest threat rating. Secunia had no additional information about the bug, however. This newly-exploited vulnerability is the second unpatched DirectShow bug to surface in the last five weeks. In late May, Microsoft issued a security advisory that reported hackers were exploiting a different DirectShow bug, this one in its QuickTime media parser. A WEEK ago, Symantec said that attack code for the QuickTime parser vulnerability had been added to a multi-exploit toolkit, and that users should expect more attacks. Hackers have been using the QuickTime parser bug since May, Microsoft has acknowledged. Today, a Microsoft spokesman said that company security researchers would be posting information about the newest vulnerability soon. Patches are not available for either vulnerability, ALTHOUGH Microsoft has suggested that users disable QuickTime parsing on Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003 machines. To expedite that, Microsoft has POSTED a tool that automates the process. CSIS recommended that users protect themselves against the newest bug by setting the "kill bit" of the ActiveX control. Microsoft's next regularly-scheduled security updates are due July 14. While most researches have said they expect the company to patch the DirectShow bug then, it's unclear whether Microsoft will fix the video streaming vulnerability at the same time.Link to the Fix is found on below link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971778Ah, nice | |

| Answer» http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9135273/Newest_IE_bug_could_be_next_Conficker_says_researcher The critical bug that Microsoft confirmed Monday but has yet to patch is a prime candidate for another Conficker-scale attack, a security researcher said. "It's better than [the VULNERABILITY used by] Conficker," Roger Thompson, chief research officer at AVG Technologies, said yesterday. "It exposes the whole world, and can be exploited through the firewall. That's better than Conficker, which mostly did its DAMAGE once it got inside a network." Conficker, the worm that exploded into prominence last January when it infected millions of machines, exploited an already-patched bug in Windows that Microsoft had thought dire enough to fix OUTSIDE its usual update schedule. The worm hijacked a large number of PCs -- ESTIMATES ranged as high as 12 million at one point -- and then assembled them into a massive botnet able to spread malware, plant fake antivirus software or distribute huge amounts of spam. "I have no doubt that the really bad guys are bustling to get this [new vulnerability] into their exploit toolkits," said Thompson. "For the Conficker people, this could be the next thing. They waited until they had a really GOOD exploit, then combined that with some smart strategies. So I wouldn't be surprised if they picked up on this." The vulnerability Thompson's worried about is in the Microsoft Video Controller ActiveX Library, or the "msvidctl.dll" file, an ActiveX control that can be accessed using Internet Explorer (IE). Although the bug has been used by hackers since at least June 9, it only made it into the public eye this week, when several security companies, including firms in both China and Denmark, reported that thousands of compromised sites were serving up exploits. On Monday, Microsoft acknowledged the vulnerability in a security advisory, said it would produce a patch and provided an automated tool to disable the ActiveX control by setting nearly three-dozen "kill bits" in the Windows registry. "This is a good exploit with a big lump of infectable people," said Thompson. One reason why the bug is an excellent choice for hackers is that it hasn't been patched. When Conficker first appeared, the flaw it exploited had already been patched by Microsoft. It turned out, however, that there were plenty of PCs that had not been updated with the fix. Thompson wouldn't hazard a guess as to whether Microsoft would be able to craft a fix in time to add it to the patches slated for delivery next Tuesday, July's regularly-scheduled update day. "But I'm fairly confident that they're trying very hard," he said. Attack code is readily available, Thompson said, meaning that attackers not yet abusing the bug don't have to figure out an exploit of their own. "If the people who infect banner ads use this before there's a patch, then watch out," he warned. Today, Microsoft admitted that researchers at IBM's ISS X-Force had reported the vulnerability in 2008, but did not name the date. The X-Force researchers had uncovered the flaw in late 2007, and had reserved a CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) number in December of that year. One of the researchers, Alex Wheeler, who is now the manager of 3Com's TippingPoint DVLabs, declined to name the date ISS reported the bug to Microsoft, citing a non-disclosure agreement he'd signed with his former employee. Microsoft didn't directly answer a question about why it had not patched the ActiveX vulnerability when it has known about the bug for at least six months and possibly as many as 18. "When we were alerted in 2008, we immediately started an investigation," a company spokesman said today in an e-mail. "As we wanted to be thorough, this took extra time to fully evaluate." The "extra time" Microsoft needed may strike some as odd, since the ActiveX control -- the "msvidctl.dll" file -- is the company's own code. And that's unusual, said Thompson. "This is the first issue with a Microsoft .dll for, really, a long while," Thompson said. "Maybe since the ANI bug in April 2007. Usually, it's a Chinese .dll or something from Adobe." The vulnerability in Windows' animated cursor -- found in the "user32.dll" file -- was patched more than 100 days after Microsoft was alerted by Alexander Sotirov, a vulnerability researcher at Determina. Microsoft issued an "out-of-band" patch for the ANI bug, breaking from its regular monthly schedule. "It's not the end of the world or anything," said Thompson. "But I won't be surprised to see Version 2.0 of Conficker with this. It seems custom-made for them." Systems running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 are vulnerable to current attacks through IE6 and IE7. Windows Vista and Windows 7 are not at risk; nor are users running IE8 or other browsers, such as Mozilla's Firefox and Google's Chrome. | |

| 1768. | Solve : Introducing the Google Chrome OS? |
| Answer» It's been an exciting nine months since we launched the Google Chrome browser. Already, over 30 million people use it regularly. We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we're announcing a new project that's a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be. Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. LATER this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone UNDERSTANDS what we are TRYING to achieve. It seems, now, that they are...Quote from: AEGIS on July 02, 2009, 08:46:13 PM I know the Linux world continues to shoot itself in it's own proverbial collective foot, but I've wondered for a long time why Microsoft just didn't lower prices on their operating systems to make them even more attractive...Well, they are temporarily. The special prices explained in the article last for a limited time and then the prices will be about the same as for Vista. As the article says, "Special offers aside, prices for Windows 7 will be largely in line with those for Vista. Microsoft has set the upgrade and full PRICE for Windows 7 Home Premium at $120 and $200, respectively; $200 and $300 for Windows 7 Professional; or $220 and $320 for Windows 7 Ultimate. That saves you $10 and $40 compared to the upgrade and full editions of Vista Home Premium, but prices remain the same for the latter two."Seems pretty crazy that Microsoft wouldn't also be giving some type of discount to the ultimate users. Personally if I was a company such as Microsoft I'd be giving them a discount before anyone else since they're paying that much to begin with. Related article... Microsoft promised that by purchasing the pricey Ultimate edition of Vista users would get all kinds of extras. However, for many, those extras turned out to be little more than a few screensavers and a poker game, prompting some significant grousing. Now, that frustration has turned to anger after Microsoft offered its pre-order program for Windows 7. Through July 11, Microsoft is offering a steep discount for those moving to cheaper versions of Windows 7, but nothing for those who want to stay on Ultimate. Under the terms of Microsoft's discount pre-order program, users can BUY an upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional at roughly half the list price, but the Ultimate version is offered at the full $219 price. Link There is ABSOLUTELY nothin worthwhile available under the Vista Ultimate package... Fortunately i don't feel cheated because it cost me zero... However had i paid i would've been pretty peeved about the whole mess. | |

They can't make less than minimum wage (before tax). That's why its a minimum. Yes they can...check the Law.in the U.S maybe... but Canada's Labor laws are fairly clear. In England it's about £5.80ph and under no circumstances can you be paid less than that. No ifs, buts or may be's. Depending on your age of course. £5.73 per hour for workers AGED 22 years and older Changed to or changing to £5.80 2009. A development rate of £4.77 per hour for workers aged 18-21 inclusive £3.53 per hour for all workers under the age of 18, who are no longer of compulsory school age When I started work 13yrs ago as an apprentice I was paid £55 a week for 2yrs. so that's about $89 - $90 per week. The rate would of been different back then obviously. The minimum wage was a great thing in my book. | |

| 1780. | Solve : The Pirate Bay rolls out streaming video website? |
| Answer» http://www.revolutionmagazine.com/news/916532/Pirate-Bay-rolls-streaming-video-website/ LONDON - Despite an unfavourable court ruling, resulting in a £3m bill in damages and year long prison sentence, The Pirate Bay is thumbing its nose at copyright holders once more, this time gunning for YouTube with the launch of a free streaming online video service. The project, called Video Bay (http://thevideobay.org/), which has been under wraps for two years, was rolled out in an 'extreme beta' version, with a warning on the home page stating 'Don't expect anything to work at all'. Regardless, the web buzzing with speculation about just what Video Bay will be capable of when it's ready to go live and what kind of precedent it sets for the world of online video. In theory, the site will allow unrestricted, free ACCESS to streaming video content in blatant violation of copyright law. Video Bay will be user driven, much like YouTube, but will be based on HTML5, the next platform in html coding that will likely replace the need for third-party plug-ins like Adobe Flash. To use Video Bay, users must have an HTML5 compatible browser, which include Firefox 3.5, Opera 9.52, Google Chrome 3 or Safari 4 (sorry IE users). The site was initially rolled out to the public a couple of weeks ago, who have been busy uploading video and audio content. Users can sign up for the service and browse through the content already uploaded, which feature music videos, and episodes from television shows like The Simpsons and Scrubs. It's expected that full LENGTH pirated films will soon make their way to the website, despite The Pirate Bay's current legal mess with its flagship BitTorrent website. At present, the website's functionality is spotty, at best. The Pirate Bay said it was launched as a work in progress, and would be complete "a year or five". On the website, an introduction reads: "This site will be an experimental playground and as such subjected to both live and drunk (en)coding, so please don't bug us too much if the site ain't working properly." The four founders of The Pirate Bay were RECENTLY denied a retrial bid in their copyright case against a number of companies in the film and recording industry. The website connects BitTorrent networks, which allows users to download films, albums and television shows without having to host any of the copyrighted content. In April the group was sentenced to spend a year in prison and required to PAY £3m in damages. After the ruling, the company filed for appeal, citing that the judge in the case was biased.one problem I see is that they target one of the biggest torrent sites, but do not target other torrent sites which are essentially doing the same things offered by thepiratebay. I don't get it. No restrictions? Uh oh!I have no idea what they're thinking....They need to stop. They are MAKING this WAY more confuzzling than it has to be! | |
| 1781. | Solve : Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson, Malware Distribution? |
| Answer» Lavasoft - Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson, Malware Distribution Quote The trend of exploiting current news events to deliver malware continues to push the boundaries of decency. Its not very often we are taken aback by malware distribution methods, but the recent vulture-like exploitation of the Air FRANCE disaster and deaths of Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett really is plumbing the depths of social engineering techniques. One wonders if the propogation of malware, etc. should be a capital offense? It sure should, and so should spam and trolling. I'm not JOKING in the slightest. So would it be a good idea to add "streamviewer.exe" to the hijackthis log tool as malware?Looks like it's part of the Trojan.Zlob family so it likely will be a RANDOM file name with streamviewer somewhere in it. http://www.prevx.com/filenames/X802495650581730065-X1/STREAMVIEWER.40014%5Bn%5D.EXE.html Not very many scanners are detecting it (yet) streamviewer.45048.exe - http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/69ba169d715bb726dcad878de94fe3d6d956bb911672d9b48cbf4d21d5c7d826-1244581451 streamviewer.40030.exe - http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/236930a2bbadb50b8cc29db8658fdc45062d8e67071be541368b02a999b37995-1244492331 It's definitely a modified rouge. | 1785. | Solve : Microsoft makes gains with bing? |
| Answer» http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/technology/microsoft-makes-gains-with-bing/article1187094/Got a 500 server error on the article, so ironically I went to Google news to SEARCH for a similar article. Will Bing bury Microsoft? Microsoft still suffers from Google envy: Steve Ballmer appears ready to make a bet of up to $11 billion that Microsoft's new search engine Bing can OVERTAKE its Internet competitor. At best, the bet is a long shot, and throwing away that amount of money could well do Microsoft IRREPARABLE harm. Link After reading this article I was able to open your article and was also an interesting read. Especially: Quote Microsoft (MSFT-Q23.28-0.79-3.28%) grabbed 12.1 per cent of U.S. Internet searches for the work week June 8-12, ACCORDING to data released by INDUSTRY tracker comScore earlier on Wednesday. Pretty good statistics, although they've been marking it really good. Seen lots of advertisements on TV and on the Internet, so will be interesting to see if it can keep the increase going. Good for "US Today" title: "US curiosity level reaches 12.1%" I guess MS simply cannot accept that they don't have the premier technology in every field.it's kind of hard not to use bing, since the microsoft.com and all of it's subdomains use it for internal searches. Our installer hall of shame is #2 on Bing.... I'm gonna remove it then Why did microsoft make bing? They just finished making windows 7! But I do love the commercials... Quote from: paudashlake on June 25, 2009, 09:02:03 PM Why did microsoft make bing? They just finished making windows 7! But I do love the commercials... I'd highly doubt they'd be filtering out searches, it'd REALLY not be worth the time and effort. How about Why is Microsoft Office expensive? Windows sucks Internet Explorer sucks ... list could go on forever .. This may be a shocker but Bing is not Google it's going to have different METHODS of sorting and handling searches. | |
| 1787. | Solve : Windows 7 to ship minus IE in the UK? |
| Answer» StoryThey say this ... but there was Windows XP "N" edition, which was XP MINUS WMP. I NEVER saw that for sale anywhere ... not at retailers, not on prebuilt systems, nowhere. Whether this will actually happen this time remains to be seen.If they do that how are you SUPPOSED to download something like firefox?Either grab it on a USB drive/floppy/whatever, or use FTP.that SOUNDS pointless! why wouldn't they add it?Quote from: paudashlake on JUNE 25, 2009, 09:05:52 PM that sounds pointless! why wouldn't they add it?Did you read the article? It's antitrust legislation, to do with Microsoft using its monopoly on the OS market to force other software, like IE, on users. I've argued for a while that Windows should be made more modular so not everybody has to install everything, but at the end of the day if you don't like IE, it's not difficult (even for my grandma) to switch to an alternative. If a user is really dissatisfied with software they'll find an alternative, the people staying with IE "because it comes with Windows" are in no way being forced to use it. | |

| 1796. | Solve : 'Most dangerous' celebs to search for online? |
| Answer» http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/08/24/celebrity.computer.virus.biel/index.htmlHmm I call media scare tactics again. Did a search for Jessica Biel on Google, WOT links didn't show one bad link on the FIRST 18 pages (page 19 did have a WOT warning page for a download WALLPAPER of her). Now I'm sure if you attached a keyword that related to adult related searches you'd get plenty of bad sites filled with malware but that's true with many actresses. Guess it could also just be a good way for McAfee to scare people into buying their products. Article didn't even mention any other security protection METHODS. E.g. how about suggestion WOT for safer browsing. Nathan, I think this was McAfee's marketing response to Norton's list of 100 Most Dangerous websites that was PUBLISHED 5 days earlier. http://safeweb.norton.com/dirtysites I didn't post that article for fear of swamping the malware forum.......so remove this post if you feel it will cause problems.Yeah you're probably right Karnac and I have no problems with these being posted on the forum, just my observation of why I believe they were posted. | |
