http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,41883,00.asp Name: Are TWO CPUs Better Than One?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I hate to point out the obvious, but this article is from 2001! A lot has changed in both hardware and software in the last four years. Johnwill.... I see your point, but I think that you missed the reson on WHY I posted about that topic... "Kubrick" wanted some information... Now, as long as my information answered his/her question, then I think that they have helped... HEY, an Encyclopedia from 1997 can STILL be useful to us today... Articles are not that different... [glb]Flame[/glb]ATTORNEY'S ADVICE -- NO CHARGE Read this and make a copy for your files in case you need to refer to it someday. Maybe we should all take some of his advice!

A corporate attorney SENT the following out to the employees in his company.

1. The next time you ORDER checks have only your initials (instead of first name) and last name put on them. If someone TAKES your checkbook, they will not
know if you sign your checks with just your initials or your first name, but your bank will know how you sign your checks.

2. Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put "PHOTO ID REQUIRED".

3. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the "For" line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it.

4. Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO Box, use your work address. Never have your SS# printed on your checks. (DUH!) You can add it if it is necessary. But if you have it printed, anyone can get it.

5. Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and
all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopy in a safe place. I also carry a photocopy of my passport when I travel
either here or abroad. We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed on us in stealing a name, address, Social Security number, credit cards.

Unfortunately, I, an attorney, have firsthand knowledge because my wallet was stolen last month. Within a week, the thieve(s) ordered an expensive monthly
cell phone package, applied for a VISA credit card, had a credit line approved to buy a Gateway computer, received a PIN number from DMV to change my driving record information online, and more. But here's some critical information to limit the damage in case this happens to you or someone you know:

1. We have been told we should cancel our credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them.

2. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc., were stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one).

But here's what is perhaps most important of all : (I never even thought to do this.)

3. Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and Social Security number. I had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell me an application for credit was made over the Internet in my name. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.

By the time I was advised to do this, almost two weeks after the theft, all the damage had been done. There are records of all the credit checks initiated by the thieves' purchases, none of which I knew about before placing the alert. Since then, no additional damage has been done, and the thieves threw my wallet away This weekend (someone turned it in). It seems to have stopped them dead in their tracks.

Now, here are the numbers you always need to contact about your wallet, etc., has been stolen:

1.) Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
2.) Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742
3.) Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289
4.) Social Security Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271

We PASS along jokes on the Internet; we pass along just about everything. But if you are willing to pass this information along, it could really help someone that you care about.

Solve : Err, Flame...?

Answer»

No offence or anything, but have you thought much about rationing the amount of posts in here? Perhaps a weekly round-up of what's happened in IT?

You do a good job, but the useful stuff is buried under a heap of the lesser stuff.

I'm a bit of a music fan, and when pay day comes there is normally a massive list of stuff I want. When I GO into the store, I have a look, and pick up a tiny fraction of that. And then I put some of it back, despite the FACT I can still afford it. It means I'm getting all the music I HAVE to get, as opposed to just good music . Quality, not quantity is the moral of the story.

I'm not the ADMIN or a moderator or anything like that, and it's not some sort of order. Feel free to carry on as you are, I'll still find the good stuff. So you are saying that I should listen to more music? lol Actually, I was going to start doing that on Sunday, because I'm starting to run out of articles to post on... lol

[glb]Flame[/glb]Flame - could you please post some recent articles concerning dual processor systems? hyper threading technology too culd be great. Solve : Did Microsft bet against Intel and lose??

This is from an article in the Verge.
It is another EPISODE in the INTEL VS. AMD debate.

Microsoft bet against Intel with its new Surfaces — and lost
The chipmaking king keeps its crown, for now
Link:
https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2019/11/7/20954044/microsoft-amd-qualcomm-intel-processors-arm-surface-laptop-3-pro-x-future-computers
They go on to say:
Quote
The focus on non-Intel chips was a big part of Microsoft’s 2019 Surface announcement. The company went out of its way to highlight the new, co-engineered Ryzen Surface Edition processor for the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3, which was optimized specifically for Microsoft’s design.
What went wrong?
The article claims that the new Surface Pro machines did not perform as well as expected. My question is How could they make such a big mistake?
Please help me understand this. The AMD stuff was said to be the best ever, but Intell is still better. How is that possible?
I wouldn't think anybody should have expected the addition of the new CPU options to dominate OVERNIGHT. What is a "big deal" is how these options are all getting their "surface" treatment- they aren't here to "steal the show" from the other available devices that use Intel chips.

Quote
The article claims that the new Surface Pro machines did not perform as well as expected. My question is How could they make such a big mistake?
Please help me understand this. The AMD stuff was said to be the best ever, but Intell is still better. How is that possible?

The article doesn't seem to mention how the AMD Chips that were used are a generation older than the Intel chip in the Intel Surface 3 they compared it to. It also fails to mention how the AMD-based Surface's have unparalleled battery life/performance for their size and capability, Something which is repeated in a number of the reviews the article mentions. They don't seem to provide any SOLID numbers, but from the article, we have this:

Quote
But as my colleague Dan Seifert noted in his review, the AMD chipset still struggled with most games and even basic 4K video playback.

What games? How did it struggle? How were they playing 4K Video? They kind of gloss over this information but it seems rather central to their review. It sounds to me like they expected the new AMD chip to make it some sort of gaming powerhouse, which is pretty ridiculous.

Solve : News about the 727 Max Software Update.?

As you know, the Boeing 737 Max has being grounded because of flaw that the company says can be fixed in software.
Just now they say a new aircraft, the 738 Max 10, will have new software.

Boeing said earlier this month that it hopes to get the green light from regulators before the end of the year ...

The story is also on the CNBC web site.

We hope they got it right this time. Broadly speaking, if it's Boeing (Max), I ain't going.
I hate flying to begin with and nothing can make me get into a 737 Max even after they fix the glitch.

My last business trip in August to go 1900 miles I drove and got there in 3 days and it was an awesome road trip. So low stress and no travel anxiety that flying brings with the insanity of the airport, TSA, and airlines.

I cant wait to drive again and have it paid for by my employer. They give me the cost of the plane ticket + airport parking + luggage fee as cash to drive and my CAR was getting 38 MPG and I was able to get there and back and have extra money left over to keep.

But it worked out to me paid 8 hours for first day of travel and driving on my 2 days off to then be back to work on the start of my WEEK right away to avoid burning vacation hours in the process each way and I was driving 10 hours a day for the 3 days each way. I was out there for a month so it didn't feel like I just got there and was going home right away.

I was able to avoid the nasty hotel food at times as well as I took some road trips on the weekends to TEXAS and stuff like that from Norman, Oklahoma were I was out for 4 weeks of System Training for automation machinery that I support/repair.Everybody: "It's safer to fly than it is to drive"

Boeing: "And it's about time somebody did something about that"Quote

Solve : Bad news - no fix for 737 Softwsare.?

You have already heard about the trouble Boeing has with the 737 Max airplane. But just now SOMETHING has come up that was not entirely unexpected.

This just came out.

Some media outlets now t reports the 737 max airplane will not get the NEEDED software fix anytime soon. Boeing is in big trouble.

You can FIND detail son ABC, CNN and USA today.

Here is a story from the Wall Street Journal:

Southwest airlines is very angry with Boeing.

As a European, and an Airbus fan (they make the wings for some MODELS in my HOME town), you might think I would be rubbing my hands together that Boeing is in such bad trouble, but I'm not because I think competition is a good thing and leads to progress.

Solve : Magnetic Tape Storage - IEEE Article?

Answer»

Found this interesting this morning to read. I had thought that they moved on from magnetic tape onto other things LIKE holographic storage which was mentioned a few years ago as the future for massive amounts of DATA stored densly into a small area etc. I guess magnetic tape due to its low cost and data density is still going strong!

At the tail end of my IT Career with my prior employer we were storing data on multiple RAID 5 drives in multiple locations and at timed intervals about once every 15 minutes, data was updated between the 7 locations to mirror each other over T1 connections at 6 of 7 locations and a private DSL bridge to 1 remote location with Copperlink 2.4mbps/2.4mbps Modems. In addition to this we had shadow copy enabled so that if someone accidentally overwrote something important it was able to be recovered of its prior form. The data we had was large like 300GB of our 1TB storage capacity, but the most critical of data ( accounting data and e-mail ) was less than 8GB so we were using an old tape drive for daily backups which was in a rotation that the following weeks data was overwriting the prior weeks data, and a monthly backup was stored offsite for 7 years at 12 tapes per year sent to safe storage offsite.

I thought that tapes were trailing in storage capacity to that of drives, but to my surprise far more data can be stored on a modern tape than todays drives. I didnt think that the data density of tapes was matched to that of drives and the simple fact that tapes have more storage surface area than platters would make them that much better for mass data storage.

https://spectrum.ieee.org/computing/hardware/why-the-future-of-data-storage-is-still-magnetic-tapethe only problem with mag tapes has always been their sequential access, about from that - they pretty much rock.
but like you, I thought they were all but dead.
certainly would be surprised if new mainframe sites where still using them.Yeah, I've seen quite a few tape drives kicking around in a datacenter that I'm sometimes in, including brand new ones being installed. They are still a pretty good option for storing backups due to the capacity of modern tapes (up to 12tb uncompressed for modern LTO-8 tapes). Performance pretty slow, especially random performance (if you want any sort of random access, forget about tape) but they work out pretty well for long term backups where you would be restoring a large amount of data in one big chunk rather than pulling off individual files.

The tapes tend to work out a FAIR bit cheaper than hard drives of the same capacity. The drives are generally quite expensive so for small amounts of data you'd probably find hard drives to be cheaper but they can work great for things like offsite/daily backups onto a stack of tapes or, for really large capacity, a tape library can be used to automatically feed tapes into a drive. Compared to using a large RAID array to hold backups, you also get the advantage of lower power consumption (you are just powering the tape drive when you are writing to it instead of having to power an entire RAID array 24/7) and don't have to worry about drives failing in an array - if your tape drive fails, you won't LOSE the data stored on the tapes and the tapes themselves are incredibly reliable. It's also not a bad idea to have backups stored on a pile of tapes that are completely offline rather than storing them on a backup server connected to the network - it's going to be pretty hard to accidentally (or maliciously) wipe out backups if they are stored on tapes sitting on a shelf in a secure location! Some of the larger ones nowadays go to 12TB. I had a Tape Drive in a 386 Server Tower which I never used and never had drivers for so I don't actually know what it was. I suspect it was a Travan.

Some other advantages:

-The mechanism is a bit simpler so they are often more reliable, especially direct drive models. (The Tapes themselves are of course susceptible to magnetic interference like a standard magnetic disk)

-capacity wise, for removable media, there simply is no competition. And this is an advantage not only for backups but for a lot of other purposes. If you need to move a lot of data across the country for example, you may find it is faster to just back up to the tape, drive there, and restore it, rather than try to copy the data over the Internet.Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 01, 2018, 04:39:51 PM

Yep - "Never underestimate the bandwidth of a STATION wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway." - Andrew S. Tanenbaum.

Amazon even provide pretty much this as a service for migrating data in and out of AWS. They have their "Snowball" service (https://aws.amazon.com/snowball/) where they ship you what is essentially a very powerful, rugged, 50 or 80tb NAS which you can load your data onto and then ship back to them to have it ingested into AWS S3 storage. They even offer "AWS Snowmobile" where they literally deliver a truck full of storage to a client's datacenter to be filled with data which is then taken away and loaded into AWS - https://aws.amazon.com/snowmobile/Amazing!

In 2015, the Information Storage Industry Consortium, an organization that includes HP Enterprise, IBM, Oracle, and Quantum, along with a slew of academic research groups, released what it called the “International Magnetic Tape Storage Roadmap.” That forecast predicted that the areal density of tape storage would reach 91 Gb per square inch by 2025. Extrapolating the trend suggests that it will surpass 200 Gb per square inch by 2028.
i did heard about something called Holographic Memory, first announced in 1970. they said size of a sugar cube can store 1TB data still havent seen one. lets see what happens to "3D magnetic storage"

A quick Google search shows us the new specs for future data storage.

Solve : UK Govt Warns Not To Access Online Banking on Windows 7?

Answer»

The NCSC, the government body for cybersecurity, is encouraging people to upgrade from Windows 7 as soon as possible, DUE to Microsoft's 2019 decision to stop providing technical support for the SOFTWARE. "The NCSC WOULD encourage people to upgrade devices currently running Windows 7, allowing them to continue receiving software updates which help protect their devices," the NCSC spokesperson said. "We would urge those using the software after the deadline to replace unsupported devices as soon as possible, to move sensitive data to a supported device and not to use them for tasks LIKE accessing bank and other sensitive accounts. They should also consider accessing email from a DIFFERENT device."

The coronavirus would not be computer NEWS if it would just go away.

BBC reports Microsoft and other major tech firms are going to lose earnings.

Microsoft is the latest major company to warn of a disruption as China grapples with the coronavirus outbreak.
The tech giant said because its Chinese suppliers were shutdown, MANUFACTURING operations have been affected.
This delay could hit sales of its personal computing business including Surface tablets, Microsoft warned.
Microsoft said factories are re-opening across China, but this is happening slower than expected.
The Microsoft announcement highlights a growing problem for tech firms that RELY on a complex network of suppliers in China for real-time deliveries of crucial PARTS.

Solve : Yet another chip flaw in Wi-Fi security?

Answer»

Again? Wasn't that fixed two years ago? Or ,maybe last year?

Here we are in 2020 and now another chip flaw has been found in widely used wireless chips.
Two sources:
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-8048431/A-flaw-chips-powering-Wi-Fi-routers-left-ONE-BILLION-devices-open-hacked.html

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/02/flaw-in-billions-of-wi-fi-devices-left-communications-open-to-eavesdroppng/

Another says:
The flaw, discovered by the cybersecurity firm ESET, effectively disarms the encryption used by a password-protected Wi-Fi network. This could let hackers watch the activity on the network as if it were wide open. But while this could mean victims are vulnerable to eavesdropping, software UPDATES and other layers of security will likely prevent this attack from having catastrophic results.

Will they REALLY fix it? Much better description:

Many devices already have patches.
Isn't this basically SAYING that the "discrete" hackers would have access to your devices?

I'm going to do this post from memory because I am not SURE which unit I have the associated files on because I haven't been over in that section of Microsoft for a year or so; since my cancer was discovered.

I was involved in the early research for Windows 10 and I remember back in the very beginning that they were stating Windows 10 was the last version with a numerical DESIGNATION —— no more like the 7 — 8 (the disaster) — 8.1 and so on.

So what I remember — roughly — was that new variations of just 10 would be rolled out over the years and so these press releases aren't really a surprise at this work station.

Funny thing, though, I seem to remember last year a rumor going around that some hotshot at some executive desk was actually sending out signals that maybe the company would change its mind about that last numerical designation decision. I honestly cannot remember who gave me that information, but I am rather sure it was an INDIVIDUAL and not a news report or a post on one of the many sites I visit.

Unfortunately, I have the double whammy of age, which definitely can cause memory lapses; and the medicine stuff the doc folks have me doing. But I keep notes on everything, so I can always go back and find stuff. Probably that rumor came to me through an informal email exchange and quite likely from one of our Google Team folks.

Which brings up another point a lot of folks don't realize; there is a lot more co-operation between Microsoft and Google (Alphabet) than people realize.

Solve : Intenet is having issues right now.?

Answer» The is not a real headline, but some media are reporting this LAST week there has been some slow down due to heavy internet traffic.

https://www.wxii12.com/article/triad-home-internet-speeds-slow-down-during-covid-19-pandemic/31932453

https://fresnobserver.com/the-internet-is-very-slow-nowadays-due-to-heavy-traffic/4132/

https://slate.com/technology/2020/03/what-will-coronavirus-do-to-the-internet.html

https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/how-coronavirus-affects-internet-usage-and-what-you-can-do-to-make-your-wi-fi-faster/2332117/

There is more. It's probably just a way to fill copy. The "news" is basically that more people are using the Internet which isn't a surprise. But as far as being stressed or slowed down, that doesn't seem to be the CASE. According the data gathered by speedtest.net, It appears the only impact so far is on Internet performance at large is for Mobile networks, and SEEMS to have primary affected CHINESE Infrastructure.

Interestingly, my Internet Speed is faster than usual. around 320mbps for my 300mbps tier but I usually get 250mbps. They also removed the ridiculous 1TB monthly Data cap they used to have.

It's also possible that other countries have not had the pandemic reach a stage where it affects infrastructure to that degree.

Dictation.
What BC just said is true. The links I provided do not have any real data to share with us, it is just based on antidotal evidence they found.
Today I heard a commercial on a local radio station from T-Mobile. They say they have increased the size of their network to accommodate the needs of the people.
So then, this is good news. Apparently the Internet is being used more than before and it is working with a LITTLE bit of giggle and struggle, but it really is working.
Whenever I use speed test, I get numbers that are consistent with the data plan I have in place.
That is all I'm going to say.

End of dictation.Geek... humbly speaking you should take a break from doing News stories...

Solve : What is a Power Dhell Attack??

Answer»

Malware is still a problem.
Symantec, a computer security firm, has released a 2019 report on malware. I noticed a short bit about Power Shell in the report. This does not mean you have to stop using power Shell and other nice tools but it is a warning that the bad GUYS are GETTING cleaver.
https://www.symantec.com/security-center/threat-report
Click on the link above and scroll down half a page and see a short video.
They say "Hiding in plain sight: malicious PowerShell scripts up 1000%"
But it is not yet a big thing. The greater threat is from the same old stuff that goes around.

That report looks ridiculous. Why can't they just present INFORMATION without making it look like a TERRIBLE sales brochure?

Anyway, it's talking about malicious powershell scripts. That's really all it is. The Melissa Virus from the 90's was "Living off the Land" malware too.

It's unsurprising that a report created by an AV vendor says anything like this. They want to sell you their product.Above comment was Copy-pasted from this two year old reddit comment.PowerShell is a powerful scripting language that provides unprecedented access to a MACHINE's inner core, including unrestricted access to Windows APIs. ... Using PowerShell in a fileless malware attack completely blurs the line between compromising a single machine and compromising the entire enterpriseThat is word for word what is written on a 3 year old "Cyberreason" blog post. It's just more security circus bullcrap, in this case they are talking up the "danger" in order to sell their crappy security product. Are you a spammer too?

From the blog post in question:
Quote

Traditional approaches to security are rendered useless in the face of these attacks because PowerShell is highly reputable, has a trusted signature, is loaded directly through system memory (which cannot be scanned using heuristics) and has unrestricted access to the OS because it’s an integral part of Windows.

What a load of garbage. "loaded through system memory"? What is that supposed to mean? What applications aren't loaded through "system memory"? Do they mean that Power shell is in the Windows System folders? If so, do they not know the difference between Memory and Storage? and if that is the case why should they be trusted for anything computer-related?. It's like going to an electrician only to find out they don't know the difference between static electricity and current electricity.

They also leave out that this still requires access to the machine.... the attack still has to run powershell to begin with. It's talking up the danger in order to sell their crap, just like every security endpoint vendor. "Buy our product to protect yourself from internet boogeymen". Of course not, I searched a little bit online and i got this.

Solve : New CPU chip flaw found. Rwally??

Answer»

The flaw is an error in the read-only memory (ROM) of Intel microprocessors, according to researchers at Positive Technologies, who disclosed it on Thursday. It could allow SOMEONE with physical access to a PC to extract its chipset key, essentially a master password that could unlock the rest of the system.

A serious design flaw and security vulnerability has been discovered in Intel's CPUs that will require an update at the operating system level to fix, reports The Register. All modern computers with Intel chips from the last 10 years appear to be affected, including those running Windows, Linux, and macOS.
https://www.macrumors.com/2018/01/02/intel-chip-design-flaw/
Note that it was earlier reported in January of 2018. I am not sure if it is the same story. not do I sewe why it is being pecked up again.
Do you understand this?
The new flaw is with the Intel Management Engine which is it's own "mini computer" that runs on the motherboard, and is part of the chipset. As I understand, IME can still be connected to and worked with even when there is no CPU installed.

The issue is Arbitrary Code Execution at the IME level, which is hilarious because that's exactly the sort of problem that makes IME (And AMDs PSP) so questionable.

In order to "exploit" this flaw, you need unsupervised physical access, specialized tools, and a good amount of time. Realistically, I don't think most end-users are affected- The main cases that it will affect are PCs used in more secure environments using things like the "Trusted Platform Module" to try to prevent tampering with the system and which use things like full-disk encryption in concert with that tamper protection. Thanks BC.
This is hard to understand. One would thank that Intel would have been more remorseful in FINDING the rare flaws. They could stand to lose more a a few chips. It is said that the flaw is in all of its chips. Either the CPU or the chip set.

ZD Net is still talking about this. But ZD Net is not the vest source.
Check You Tube:
Flaw In Intel Chips Is Very Big
Use the above in a search.

What is confusing is somersetting like that was reported earlier.

Researchers have warned thatr Intel hardware may have another major security vulnerability, potentially putting millions of devices around the world at risk.

The security team at Bitdefender claim that "every machine" that uses an Intel processor and that runs Windows, Linux or FreeBSD is impacted by the vulnerability, which comes just months after the hugely damaging Spectre and Meltdown scares.
https://www.techradar.com/news/intel-chip-security-flawA lot of it is part of what I'd call the security circus. Vague on details, but hard on the generalizations. Keep people confused, but try to scare them and they'll happily purchase whatever security bull you say solves the problem.

"The security team at Bitdefender". Bitdefender's entire business is related to security software, firewalls, etc. This is ANALOGOUS to a research team at Hershey saying that people need Chocolate to live. "security teams" are always uncovering things that would promote their product. They are always careful not to explain the vulnerabilities, just talk about how they are dangerous.

What you explained in your prior post for it to be manupilated is not an easy task at all...

Positive Technologies: Unfixable vulnerability in Intel chipsets threatens users and content rightsholders
Link goes on to quote a researcher:
One of the researchers, Mark Ermolov, Lead Specialist of OS and Hardware Security at Positive Technologies, explained: "The vulnerability resembles an error recently identified in the BootROM of Apple mobile platforms, but affects only Intel systems. Both vulnerabilities allow extracting users' encrypted data. Here, attackers can obtain the key in many different ways. For example, they can extract it from a lost or stolen laptop in order to decrypt confidential data. Unscrupulous suppliers, contractors, or even employees with physical access to the computer can get hold of the key. In some cases, attackers can intercept the key remotely, provided they have gained local access to a target PC as part of a multistage attack, or if the manufacturer allows remote firmware updates of INTERNAL devices, such as Intel Integrated Sensor Hub."

Still I admit confusion. The Apple things was last year.

Microsoft on Thursday took the wraps off an ongoing campaign impacting popular web browsers that stealthily injects malware-infested ads into search results to earn money via affiliate advertising.

"Adrozek," as it's called by the Microsoft 365 Defender Research Team, employs an "expansive, dynamic attacker infrastructure" consisting of 159 unique domains, each of which hosts an average of 17,300 unique URLs, which in turn host more than 15,300 unique malware samples.

The campaign — which impacts Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Yandex Browser, and Mozilla Firefox browsers on WINDOWS — aims to insert additional, unauthorized ads on TOP of LEGITIMATE ads DISPLAYED on search engine results pages, LEADING users to click on these ads inadvertently.
