Solve : FCC names software firem as a high risk. Huh??

Answer»

I found this on a popular source:

FCC WARNS That KASPER sky Poses National Security Risk

Link:
https://www.techrepublic.com/article/fcc-adds-kaspersky-chinese-companies-to-list-of-potential-threats-to-national-security/
There are other sources. I find this hard to believe.

Please tell me it is not true. I find it very EASY to believe. Many governments have banned the use of Kaspersky on government computers (Lithuania, for example) . Other's don't have it listed in any sort of OFFICIAL policy but do not use it (Canada).

in 2017, US and BRITISH Intelligence alleged that Kaspersky had colluded with Russian Intelligence agencies to facilitate espionage and data theft initiatives.

Directives banned it from some parts of the U.S Government in 2017.

Solve : Installers Hall of Shame?

Answer»

Quote from: PATIO on November 05, 2010, 10:25:23 AM

The step by step guide for the Flash updates are Mozilla webpages...

The Mcaffee Opt-Out page is not. That is on Adobe.

there's also this...

Quote
4. Follow the on-screen prompts until you reach our goal: a browser running an up-to-date version of Flash

Adobe and Mozilla both need to make this process easier for users. In summary, this is how it went:

* Windows: 9 steps, 2 unnecessary software downloads from Adobe
* Mac: 15 steps
* Linux: 6 steps, high likelihood of failure or conflict with package manager

Safe to say that there are many ways we can improve this process:

* Show specific warnings about which plugins are out of date
* Don’t have an intermediate step on the plugin checker
* Do not have the McAfee opt-out on the Flash download page
* Do not force people to download the XPI (Firefox could use an external installer + hash check like it does with PFS)
* Eliminate any steps you can — get it down to a one-click experience if possible

A while ago I posted saying Avast! anti-virus has bundled Google chrome, yet the check boxes were not pre-ticked, I am saddened to say that I have done some FRESH installs on some new clients machines and now not only is the "Install Google Chrome" box ticked but also "Make Google Chrome my default browser" is also ticked.HP Advisor Dock - Changes your search engine to yahoo on startup. The Internet Explorer 4 installer is the worst. It took over Windows 95 and NT4 systems and made them very slow by replacing stable system files with slower and unstable ones, even if you don't choose the enhanced desktop. I have a old 95 system (really old now, don't use it MUCH) and it is really slow with IE4 JUNK.

Above: This is what happens to the desktop (not my screenshot). It becomes from a clean desktop (http://bit.ly/hjfFkL) to a very cluttered one invaded by Internet Explorer

I found one very interesting website at http://toastytech.com/evil/ieisevilstory.html explaining more detail about this^Nonsense.^

*that is only what you get if you check off EVERYTHING in the installer. Otherwise Active Desktop will not be enabled. In fact, come to think of it, I don't think I got any checkboxes at all the check off. the only result was that I had an IE icon on the desktop. The horror! That looks more like an OEM customized version of Windows 95 OSR2.

I have an "old" Windows 98 System and it didn't run slow with IE4 junk, it doesn't run slow with "IE5 junk" either. Well, not slower then I would expect, it being 133Mhz and all. It didn't run noticably faster without either, anyway.

One cure-all solution in the windows 95 case is to simply not install IE of you don't want such "annoyances" as the quick-launch bar, sane Explorer windows, or a desktop that let's you have a background that isn't simply centered or tiled but also allows for stretch. (I think it allows you to use JPG and GIF as wallpaper; by default you can only use BMP and RLE.)

The site you linked, I've seen it before. Some idiot trying to live in the past. You can tell because the page itself is designed using barebones HTML. Additionally he seems to enjoy weaving conspiracy theories:

Quote
Microsoft began bundling or requiring Internet Explorer as a non-optional component of their software products. They even "convinced" many other software vendors to bundle Internet Explorer as well.
It was "non-optional" because the rendering engine was starting to be used more prevalently. Also, many features (such as the Rebar control, ListView, and Treeview controls) used functionality from IE (well, actually, no... what they did was the Common controls were part of IE4 but they were not redistributable; so vendors who used the controls had to check to see if IE4 was installed. his implication that Microsoft strong-armed vendors into doing this is nonsense, since they could have simply written their own controls and not installed IE4, but apparently they found it easier to do it that way. Their choice- not Microsoft's.

Quote
And as if forcing IE on all Windows users wasn't bad enough, Microsoft forced Apple to bundle IE for Mac as their default browser instead of Netscape. If Apple refused, Microsoft would discontinue MS-Office for Mac.
That is simply dead-wrong. Microsoft didn't force apple to do squat. In fact, If Microsoft had offered that ultimatum, Apple would have gladly declined, since one of the competitors to Office for the Mac was Appleworks as well as a few other Apple supported applications. Office for the mac was hardly the only choice people had- in fact it was not even a very popular one at the time. The two companies entered into a partnership. What reasons would apple have to choose the lesser of the two browsers (netscape)? It had already suffered several years up through 1997.

Many pages on the site are lies from what I seen (he said MS will take over the world but nobody can), but I should have looked at different web pages also. He should invest in a mac computer if he hates IE so much.

Anyway, the IE4 installer is still invasive. On 98 it includes IE4 with sidebar and enhanced explorer.

Also, the old 95 system I have would have been slow anyways, but IE4 makes it slower.Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 17, 2011, 09:10:33 AM

That is an OEM customized version of Windows 95, but as he said - It isn't his computer. I have a 95 system, I tried ths out and the same thing occured, you DO get the active desktop enabled. It was a custom built 95 system and NOT a OEM install.

Quote from: immental1200 on June 07, 2011, 02:25:42 PM
you DO get the active desktop enabled. It was a custom built 95 system and NOT a OEM install.

Before IE4 install:

After IE4:

OMG! it replaced the Internet Icon with a Internet Explorer ICON! IT'S SO INVASIVE! MICROSOFT IS EVIL! Now, to be absolutely fair, it did have that channel bar (which I don't remember it having last time, perhaps I merely misremembered). But it's not like pressing the X on that was difficult. "Do you want the channel bar to start up again on next boot" "No" problem solved.

Also, no Active Desktop; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\ {AEB6717E-7E19-11d0-97EE-00C04FD91972}\InProcserver32 was still set to URL.DLL.

As for the IE4 installer being invasive: from that experience, where all it did was install IE4, I'm not seeing where that comes from. Clearly the installer I got doesn't include the Desktop Update; the ones that do, it's optional.

Which is still funny. People are constantly complaining, and were even then, that Microsoft is "forcing" people to upgrade their version of windows. And yet, then they release a desktop update for windows 95 to make it's shell more like windows 98 (translation: Not a P.O.S) and all people can do is complain and weave conspiracy theories. Did it take more resources? Of course it did; you were basically transmuting Windows 95 into Windows 98, just like the NT 3.51 Desktop update took more resources than using program manager. Windows XP Luna themes took more processing and graphics power than Windows 98 or 2000's, and Windows Vista and 7's Aero glass take even more. The only people that make a big deal out of this are chicken littles who insist the sky is falling because they can run the latest version of IE or Windows on their 486, or that installing the desktop update to a windows 95 computer makes it slower, as if that isn't to be expected for the features and abilities you get (like the aforementioned ability to actually use some sort of non-crap bitmap compression for your wallpapers). What makes it even better in this instance is all their "problems" could be averted by merely unchecking the box. Or not checking it to begin with (although presumably it defaults to checked). And, it can be uninstalled, so even if somebody claiming to be a careful PC user manages to install it by accident they could simply remove it.

Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 07, 2011, 03:39:12 PM
that channel bar

Ah, I remember that. I didn't like it because it didn't really fit in with the rest of the interface so I REMOVED it. The closest thing MS has done since then was the Desktop Bar or whatever it was called that came with Vista. I removed that too.Is there any point in even updating this list? Lately I haven't seen a single installer without some kind of toolbar or extra software that they try trick you into installing.

It's ridiculous how crafty they are allowed to be. Recently I was installing something and I chose "Express Install" rather than custom because I was in a hurry - and the *censored* thing installed a toolbar into my browser. Apparently you have to choose "Custom" in order to deselect the stupid add-ons that come with the software.

I know way too many people who fall victim to these and have no clue how or why.Quote from: drmsucks on September 20, 2008, 12:36:55 PM
Very nice, Broni

Solve : WARNING - CHILDREN AND COMPUTERS?

Answer»

Hello everyone! This is a public service announcement.... It seems like kids and computers do not mix too well... Over the past few months, I have seen WAY TOO MANY instances where PARENTS have let their CHILDREN (very young kids) use the computer UNATTENDED.... Now, USUALLY, this results in Windows files suddenly "missing".... Partents, if your kids are going to use the computer, but do not know their way around, PLEASE find a way to make sure that they can not delete any important files! For your own sake, just do it! Now, I'm not cutting down on anyone who has let this happen to them before, bu rather, I am trying to prevent future trouble... Thanks for listening everyone!

[glb]Flame[/glb]The accidental deletion of files is a best case scenario if they SURF the net. As I'm sure many of you are aware, typing something as innocuous as "dog" into Google will result in - well, quite...

If you let your kids use the PC, make sure they're supervised, especially if it's hooked to the net.

Don't go overboard though. Let them delve into the innards. How do you think I learned all about this computing malarky? If you have backed up that win.ini file, why not let them SEE what happens if it DISAPPEARS?

You'll thank me when your little one has a high paid job in IT consulting. I'll be wanting a cut of their wages, by the way...

Edit: Decided that I should actually type in "dog" into Google. Just for research purposes, you understand. At least the first 50 pages of results is non-pornographic, which tells me that very few people have the common-sense to own cats...

Solve : NV40 benchmarks?

Answer»

some benchmarks for the nV40 have been released, look...

-38K marks in 3DMark 2001SE

-Halo ( no AA, 8x AF ) 1600x1200 51.1fps

-Far Cry ( no AA, no AF ) 1600x1200 53.4fps

-UT2004 ( 4xAA, 4xAF ) 1600x1200 71.9fps - 1280x960 82.9fps ( both botmach )

-Star Wars Kotor ( 4xAA, 8xAF ) 1600x1200 49.3fps

and these are with non final drivers.

also another quote..

"Even if the R420 is a 12-piped card, it would have to be CLOCKED at 633Mhz to have the same fillrate as that."

And that isnt going to happen.
So it looks like nvidia is going to be ontop again (yay).

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14827

http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10946

Thanks for the LINKS MM, I love looking at the latest technologies, even though I won't be buying a leading-edge video card any time soon. I can't wait for the pci express standard to come out. The mountain of USED AGP cards on ebay will be good bargain hunting. After all, yesterdays tech is good enough for me! I'll always be an ATI grrl! Far as I'm concerned they can't be beat.Nvidia isnt going to make the same mistake twice. Im betting the NV40 is going to be very good. Its totally different from the FXs (hence why they have dropped the FX from the name, i.e. Geforce 6800).I'm betting that those 3DMark scores are due more to driver hacks than to the merits of the NV40. I highly doubt that ATi and nVidia's new GPUs are going to vary massively in performance. As it is now, the 9800XT and GFFX5950 are fairly close in performance in DX8.1 and lower games (with the NV card being slightly faster), and the ATi cards offer as much as a 50% better framerate in DX9 games utilizing pixel shader 2.0. I suspect this next generation will be the same where one company's card will be good at one thing and the other company's at SOMETHING else. Preliminary reports of NV40 scoring 12k in 3DMark03 are most likely not accurate, or are due to nV's infamous driver hacking. Never in the history of video cards has the next generation offered a 100% raw performance increase over the previuos generation. I say 100% increase because with non-dodgy drivers, the GFFX 5950 gets around 6k-6.5k in 3DMark03. A score of 12k would imply a near 100% increase. Even a default score of 10k in 3DMark03 is a bit hard to swallow. 8-9k seems more probable. 38K in 3DMark01 seems very unlikely as well.Well the NV40 NDA has been lifted, and there are no 38K default 3DMark01 benches. I was half surprised to see 12k scores in 3DM03, but I'll wait until a reputable review site analyzes nV's drivers- remember the NV30/35 was able to pull 8K default benches using cheat drivers. Several of the reviews have already noticed low IQ anomalies in certain games (UT2004, Far Cry), and it wouldn't be surprising if something flaky was going on in pre-set benchmarks like Aquamark and 3DMark. Really, 3DM03 and Call of Duty are the only apps where the NV40 has a near 100% lead at default. Otherwise, it takes very HIGH resolutions for the NV40 to pull way ahead, which is good for futureproofing. The card looks good, but not the price. I think anyone would be foolish to outright buy this card now when we'll be able to see how it compares to ATi's offering in a month. There are now some comparisons between the X800 series cards and 6800s. It seems that the two top end models of the cards (X800 XT Platinum and 6800 Ultra Extreme) are more or less identical in terms of performance and the image quality is also very similar. There are a couple of things to note about he cards tho.

1. 6800s support PS3.0, X800s only support 2.0 with a couple of other features like displacement mapping.

2. the ATI card is clocked much higher than the geforce equivilent indicating the nvidia archtecture is more efficient. The highest clock speed they can get out of either card is 600Mhz due to the 16nm manufactureing process. This gives the Geforce more headroom for overclocking and also later card revisions.

3. The ATI drivers are more mature than the Geforce ones meaning the geforce is more likley to get performance gains due to newer/better drivers.

Solve : Adaware SE - Professional, Plus and Personal?

Answer»

Åsarp, Monday, August 9, 2004

Lavasoft announces the launch of Ad-Aware SE
- a new generation of Anti Spyware solution

Lavasoft currently distributes its anti Spyware application Ad-Aware to over 80 million home and corporate users worldwide including 3000 partners in over 120 countries.

Lavasoft started distributing Ad-Aware in 1999. 1825 days have passed since Lavasoft released its first anti Spyware application which has precipitated a wave of liberation that our users and customers have, and continue to, enjoy.

Ad-Aware has since been developed into a state of the art application that can keep pace with the increasingly sophisticated threats we face.

In the ensuing debate, users welcomed the advances made by Lavasoft during the past years in their further development of Ad-Aware. The stark and disturbing evidence has only shown us to well how system owners are suffering because of intrusive Spyware, with too many instances of users being subjected to extreme content and denied the control over their own systems or networks.

Lavasoft has supported the PRIVACY community from the very beginning and will continue to lead the way in taking the steps necessary to keep PCs and workstations safe and secure.

There is a category of Ad-Aware users that will always demand even more performance. We share their passion, so we created Ad-Aware SE, an innovative new approach – The New Generation.

Lavasoft, with its Ad-Aware technology, is widely known for delivering comprehensive and secure performance. Together with several newly developed techniques and our newly developed scanning technology Ad-Aware SE delivers heretofore unseen performance on both PCs and workstations. Just like in the past, where Lavasoft was one of the first to offer a comprehensive anti Spyware solution, we're proud to be the first again to offer a new generation, ground-breaking anti Spyware solution.

We would like to expand further on that statement and have therefore highlighted the key areas we have worked on during the past year to again further improve and ensure the protection of end-user desktops all the way up to the corporate and enterprise environment.

With Ad-Aware SE we show how to achieve modern, comprehensive anti Spyware protection.

NEW features in Ad-Aware SE Professional edition

- New command line parameters that allow for silent and automated operation of Ad-Aware

- UNC support for remote storage of Preferences, definitions, and log files

However, considering the state of the current Windows search that is called 'Messenger search' or something dubious like that, I think it is going to be a big laugh.

Perhaps something to think about when you buy shares?

I know a lot of people are going to take the search results Windows will provide them with for granted.. EVEN if they only link to ASSOCIATED partners.nothing will overrule goole i LOVE that search engine I think on Friday it was at 134.

Solve : Spyware, Viruses and Mad Aussies?

Three new stories for you all. Now don't say I'm not good to you...

Microsoft sets sights on spyware

Windows users could soon be paying Microsoft to keep PCs free of spyware.

Following the takeover of anti-spyware firm Giant, Microsoft said it would soon release a toolkit that strips machines of the irritating programs.

Although initially free, Microsoft has not ruled out charging people who want to keep this toolkit up to date.

Surveys show that almost every Windows PC is infested with spyware programs that do everything from bombard users with adverts to STEAL login data.

Microsoft said that a beta version of the toolkit to clean up Windows machines should be available within 30 days.

Virus poses as Christmas e-mail

Security firms are warning about a Windows virus disguising itself as an electronic Christmas card.

The Zafi.D virus translates the Christmas greeting on its subject line into the language of the person receiving infected e-mail.

Anti-virus firms speculate that this multilingual ability is helping the MALICIOUS program spread widely online.

Anti-virus firm Sophos said that 10% of the e-mail currently on the net was infected with the Zafi virus.

A 22-year-old gamer has spent $26,500 (£13,700) on an island that exists only in a COMPUTER role-playing game (RPG).

The Australian gamer, known only by his gaming moniker Deathifier, bought the island in an online auction.

The land exists within the game Project Entropia, an RPG which allows thousands of players to interact with each other.

Entropia allows gamers to buy and sell virtual items using real cash, while fans of other titles often use auction site eBay to sell their virtual WARES.

Earlier this year economists calculated that these massively multi-player online role-playing games (MMORPGs) have a gross economic impact equivalent to the GDP of the African nation of Namibia.

No, actually. The main reason Linux is so popular is because it is free. The Kernal (the heart of the OS, if you like) was coded by Linus Torvalds while he was at University because he couldn't find an OS to suit his needs or his budget. He released this onto the net and allowed people to modify it all they LIKED, so long as they posted their modifications to be downloaded and used freely.

It still goes on today.

Solve : New browser wins over surfers?

Answer»

Quote

The PROPORTION of surfers using Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) has dropped to below 90%, say web analysts.

Net traffic monitor, OneStat.com, has reported that the open-source BROWSER Firefox 1.0, released on 9 November, seems to be drawing users away from IE.

While IE's market share has dropped 5% since May to 88.9%, Mozilla browsers - INCLUDING Firefox - have grown by 5%.

Firefox is made by the Mozilla Foundation which was set up by former browser maker Netscape in 1998.

Although there have been other preview versions of Firefox, version 1.0 was the FIRST COMPLETE official program.

"It seems that people are switching from Microsoft's Internet Explorer to Mozilla's new Firefox browser," said Niels Brinkman, co-founder of Amsterdam-based OneStat.com.

Solve : Anti-Spam screensaver announced... then scrapped?

Answer»

Quote

A contentious campaign to bump up the bandwidth bills of spammers by flooding their SITES with data has been dropped.

Lycos Europe's Make Love, Not Spam campaign began in late November but its tactics proved controversial.

Lycos has shut down the campaign saying it had been started to STIMULATE debate about anti-spam measures and had now achieved this aim.

The anti-spammer screensaver came under fire for encouraging vigilante activity and skirting the edge of the law.

Source: BBC News - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4073547.stm

It appears the system went a bit overboard with the amount of data it was sending out and the whole thing went belly up. But I think the best bit is the timing of it all:

"Screensaver tackles spam websites" - 29 Nov 04
"Anti-spam plan OVERWHELMS sites" - 02 Dec 04
"Freeze on anti-spam campaign" - 03 Dec 04
Anti-spam screensaver scrapped - 06 Dec 04

From release to death in a single week.I've had YOGURTS stay fresh longer than that.Yoghurt stays proper for quite a while.

I wonder if that's ethical.. Spamming spammers?Don't spam, lest ye be spammed. There is virus circulating that arrives in an email and claims to install this screen saver. It installs a key logger and sends the results to a site in Indonesia. Hope nobody FALLS for it, especially since Lycos has pulled the plug on it.

Solve : Browser wars?

Answer»

Has anyone heard of Mozillla and Firefox vs. Internet Explorer? I've recently switched to Mozilla, because it is supposed to be a more secure browser than Internet Explorer. There is also an alternative to Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird. They are free downloads, and very user friendly. A lot of people don't even know they have a choice.
It never hurts to shop around for a better deal. Do some RESEARCH and check out Mozilla. Look up browser reviews and browser wars, or go to Mozilla/Firefox WEB site and see for yourself, what they have to offer, and where Internet Explorer is lacking in security. Just an FYI. I have used Mozilla Firefox since version 0.7, if I recall correctly.IE is actually as secure as the rest of them - the only difference is that you need to do a lot of tinkering to get it that way, as opposed to the Mozilla browsers (www.mozilla.org) and Opera (www.opera.com), which ship with REASONABLY sane defaults.

I've actually used Opera since v5 - it's an excellent browser that I think even beats Firefox for features, but does have an advert at the top of the page. Even then, I don't find them all that INTRUSIVE...And the one internet explorer was supposed to be the advant browser>http://www.download.com/3000-2356_4-10150342.html

Solve : I really hate Windows Updates?

Answer»

I do, because it didn't happen for the first time.

Last Tuesday Windows Updates on my Vista. Everything went smooth, things were working fine, until I decided to install some program, and Comodo's regular security pop-ups were taking ages to show up during installation.
What the heck?
Tried to re-download, same thing.
Downloaded another program. Same extreme slowness.
Only after few days, I realized, that all this started just after Tuesday.

I started checking things, and surely enough, I found first culprit.
One of updates TURNED on Windows Defender service, which I don't use, and I had disabled.
I fixed this, but it helped only a little.
Why Micro$oft does want to decide what is running on my computer?

Finally (hinted by someone else problem on this board), I uninstalled, and reinstalled Comodo, and things are back to normal.
I was going nuts...

P. S. I still need to check XP installation, if it's having same problem.

Dunno, but I had FF as my default browser, and when I ran WU my default browser was Microsnot Internet Exploiter. I have my computer set to notify me about Windows updates but not to install them automatically. I have a red SHIELD and the implied warning that if I don't let them install it automatically, SOMETHING dire will happen to my computer. I don't want them to install GMA which they try to sneak by frequently. My last Windows Update forced me to reformat my laptop. It screwed up my computer so much there was nothing I could do...I have mine set to download automatically, but not install. I don't know why they keep re-releasing that stupid malware removal thing. Doesn't it just check for the same thing every month? ..... And screw GMA....I have notify only set to on.
I generally wait a good 2 weeks after updates and check my FORUMS for problems with them before i even consider installing them...

Solve : Comcast punches up Net access, but it comes at a price?

Answer»
Comcast, the No. 1 residential broadband service provider, Thursday will give residents of Minneapolis and St. Paul the first opportunity to check out a speedy INTERNET service that CEO Brian Roberts calls "cable's next big thing.".

Quote
The speed comes with a steep price: nearly $150 a month for residential users and $200 for business customers, who get additional software and services.

Quote
Customers will be able to DOWNLOAD Internet data at a rate of up to 50 megabits per second and upload at 5 Mbps. That contrasts with Verizon's cablelike FiOS service: In six states, it offers a top speed of 50 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up for $140 a month. Comcast will BOOST its download speed to 100 Mbps over the next two years and plans a subsequent jump to 160 Mbps.

Solve : Vista, MacBook Out--Only Linux Left in Hacking Contest?

Answer»
The MACBOOK Air went first; a tiny Fujitsu laptop running Vista was hacked on the last day of the contest; but it was Linux, running on a Sony Vaio, that remained undefeated as conference organizers ended a three-way computer hacking challenge Friday at the CanSecWest conference.

LinkWait a minute, I thought Macs were supposed to be the most secure operating system!
That's what mac fans claim anyways.
I wonder what Socrates has to say about that? Yeah, but check it out -- he hacked the Mac via the Safari browser. Vista held up for two days because that cracker didn't expect to be attacking Service Pack 1. Java lent itself to security problems. The Linux code had bugs, but no one wanted to devote the time necessary to writing code to defeat it. Yeah, I read the article. But still, the notion that macs are more secure than windows is totally blown out of the water. If anything, they are equal because a hole in the os itself was not found.
Actually, it could be ARGUED that they only found a hole in the linux os because they were actually aloud to see the source of the os. It's not limited to just trial and error to find a vulnerability. I wonder how many more holes could be found in mac and vista if we could view their source code. They might have been knocked out on the first day! The only thing that has ever made OS X secure is the fact that hardly anyone use it.
Malware writers have had little incentive to create something that attacks Macs since their market share has been so low.
But as Macs and OS X are increasing in popularity, I think all the Mac fan boys are in for a rude awakening when they realize exactly how ill prepared OS X and Apple are for highly professional malware writers.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/03/31/apple_security_response_pants/Good points!

Maybe there is something to be said for proprietary code...

I wasn't exactly defending Apple -- kinda ironic that the hack went thru the browser...

Solve : Has Safari Suddenly Appeared on Your Windows XP or Windows Vista Machine??

Answer» HERE

Have you suddenly found Safari automatically downloaded and installed on your Windows Vista or Windows XP machine? If so, you’re not alone. Apple started pushing the Safari for Windows download and installation through their iTunes for Windows update this week, and reports are starting to come in that Windows users who never intended to have Safari for Windows downloaded onto their machines are suddenly finding Safari there, automatically downloaded and installed.

It is almost unheard of for a company to use a product update system as a conduit for pushing a completely different product, and Apple is taking their lumps for it now.

“What Apple is doing now with their Apple Software Update on Windows is wrong. It undermines the trust relationship great companies have with their CUSTOMERS, and that’s bad — not just for Apple, but for the security of the whole Web,” blasted none other than John Lilly, CEO of Mozilla, whose own products include Firefox.

Now, to be fair, one can easily uncheck the box to download Safari when it was presented in the iTunes for Windows update screen.

But, to be equally fair, one has come to trust these updates - to trust that what comes through the update mechanism are, well, updates - maybe even important updates - not wholly new software. So that it isn’t completely unreasonable for users to simply accept all of the updates pushed from Apple without looking too closely

Until now.

It also wasn’t altogether a surprise that Apple slipped Safari into their iTunes for Windows updates - at least not for Apple WATCHERS. Last summer, when Apple announced Safari for Windows, Jobs even foreshadowed the move, by asking, rhetorically, “But how are we going to distribute this? We don’t really talk to these [Windows] customers, do we? What are we gonna do?” He then went on to answer his own question, “Well, it turns out there are one million downloads of iTunes a day. Turns out there’s been over half a billion downloads of iTunes to Windows.”

Still, for many Windows users, it’s been a big surprise.

One user summed up what many are feeling when he said that he was “Feeling tricked by Apple… Safari browser installed on my Vista machine that I didn’t ask for.”This is not without precedent: I've had Google and Yahoo toolbars presented to me as companion installs to out-of-box software, as well as downloaded software.

Still, this doesn't make it right -- I think it tarnishes Apple's image when they adopt the poor business practices of other companies.Apple is far from being a saint - QuickTime, and iTunes are perfect examples of troublesome products.Quote from: Broni on March 24, 2008, 07:27:22 PM

Agreed.

Ditto.
I installed iTunes when I bought my iPod and it asked me if it I would like itunes to organize my music collection. I answered yes thinking it would create links to my music and organize the links inside itunes. But no, it completely screwed up my music organization on my hard drive and now, instead of having 75-100 folders of personally ORGANIZED music, I have around 250 folders and I don't know where anything is unless I use iTunes. Apples really pisses me off.
I forgot about QuickTime and iTunes... I think Apple is going to really get burned by this decision. If someone hasn't already I think it would be funny for someone to create an ad that mimics the hi I'm a mac and I'm a PC commercial with something along the premises of:

PC guy: Just sitting doing something..
Apple guy: Hi PC I noticed your iTunes is out of date would you like me to give you a new update?
PC guy: Ohh thanks Apple guy.
Apple guy: Here you go.

PC guy: Hey wait a second, what -- what, are you doing I didn't want that.

End commercial.
Here's my rant about iTunes.

** BEGIN RANT **

iTunes is the most pathetic load of cow manure I've ever used. It is slow, buggy and hogs up your entire hard drive. How can 40-60MB of music turn into 200-300MB so fast? I never asked for my music to be converted to AAC, but it did that automatically without me noticing.

** END RANT **Wow! I had iTunes for a while, but never had that many songs, so when I lost a drive, and they told me they had NO record of any of my transactions, I said, "Golly gee, shucky darn" and I haven't been BACK...

I didn't realize it was such a resource hog.

I don't even have an iPod or mp3 player at the moment, so it's not a big deal to me...eventually, I'll get something...i remember awhile ago i went to download quicktime, and it automatically installed itunes. there was no check box, there was no "click here to download quicktime or click here to download quicktime and itunes," there was just quicktime with itunes. i was ticked off and immediately UNINSTALLED itunes and started swearing to apple under my breath. i recently downloaded quicktime again, and this time there was a link to download just quicktime, mind you there was another link for quicktime and itunes. i dont want itunes and i never plan on downloading it. if i ever purchase an ipod, im going to use third party software.

Solve : Microsoft or Apple - Who Is the Faster Patcher??

"And the answer is... Microsoft. Researchers from the Swiss Federal INSTITUTE of Technology analyzed 658 high-risk and medium-risk vulnerabilities affecting Microsoft products and 738 affecting Apple. They measured how many times over the past SIX years the two vendors were able to have a patch available on the day a vulnerability became publicly known, which they call the 0-day patch rate. What they found: 'Apple was below 20 [unpatched vulnerabilities at disclosure] consistently before 2005,' said Stefan Frei, ONE of the researchers involved in the study. 'Since then, they are very OFTEN above. So if you have Apple and COMPARE it to Microsoft, the number of unpatched vulnerabilities are higher at Apple.'"

Solve : eBay to Ban negative reviews?

EBay to ban negative seller views
EBay sign
The feedback system is central to eBay's online auction experience
Online auction site eBay has said it plans to overhaul its feedback system and will ban sellers from leaving negative comments about buyers.

EBay said problems were occurring, and slowing down trade, when buyers left negative comments about sellers who then retaliated with their own views.

From May, those selling on eBay will not be able to leave unfavourable or neutral messages about buyers.

The move, which will affect users worldwide, has angered many sellers.

Full StoryI think the ideal situation would have been some way for buyers who received negative reviews by sellers retaliating for a negative review posted by a buyer to get a hearing by eBay and then eBay reviewing the seller's feedback and taking appropriate disciplinary measures. But, such a system would probably be too costly to administer. Thus, this decision.

I can relate to this. In my limited use of ebay, I've experienced a situation where I decided to withhold negative feedback on a seller for fear of retaliation. Still, I WONDER whether the new system will have it's problems, also. Will some buyers post unwarranted/frivolous negative feedback for sellers? Time will tell. Those are very valid points SOYBEAN...
Especially the observation on reviewing/arbitrating negative reviews...not economically feasible at all on their part.
However even with it being an unpoliced format til now it's probably better than what they plan on moving to...kinda like saying " oh ...it's on eBay it must be good ! !"...If somebody had space and wanted to set up a forum, then charge sellers a very minimal fee - $5 a year - then all eBay would have to do is let the sellers post a link to their thread.

I'd have to think about it some more... would the thing to do be to let the buyers respond for free?

Anyway - you could let 'em duke it out! Flame fest!!

Good for eBay, as they no longer have to deal with it.
Good for buyers and sellers, because they are no longer limited to a COUPLE very short exchanges. They can fully describe their gripes.

As far as potential buyers or sellers, good for them too, if they can stomach wading through some of the threads that would develop. They could get a better sense of what really happened.

Build it up for a couple years, then sell it to Microsoft for $44 billion.

I agree with ebay. If a buyer pays for the item within the time frame. What else can the buyer do? People who don't PAY should get some kind of "record" so other sellers would be aware of that business. I hate those notes that say "I'll leave feedback AFTER you leave yours" Sounds a lot like blackmail to me.

Nice to see you back Carbon... think about the energy saving possibilities. if every warehouse and/or street lamp in north america went from HID bulbs to these, the amount of energy saved would be enormous.
