Solve : Microsoft: Next Version Of Windows Due In 2010?

Answer»

i wish microsoft would take the windows vista GUI and security, and add to it XP's speed and memory usage. That would be a good BASIC OS. But there's gotta be some extra new features too.

But why can't Microsoft make two beta releases? Keep those private group of IT's that are tinkering away at actual Microsoft beta software/OS's.

And open up a forum or suggestions page to the MILLIONS and millions of regular windows users and regularly unsatisfied windows users or former windows users so we can ask microsoft to incorporate what we'd like to see in the next windows...

After all, if microsoft is attempting to monopolize the OS world, why not make it a successful MONOPOLY by allowing us to help them make us happy?

Solve : new ipod?

Answer»

The new iPod is out now. It looks pretty cool and kinda makes me wish I would have waited a couple months before I bought mine.
The iPod nano can now play video and has a bigger screen. Classic ipod looks the same but you can now get even more STORAGE for the same price.
But the iPod Touch..... That looks awesome. basically an iPhone without the phone. you can surf the web via Wi-Fi on its larger screen.

http://www.apple.com/ipod/

Comments....I still think that an iPod is a waste of money.
There are much cheaper MP4 players that are at least as good as the iPod.
I know much of you won't agree with me but I would advice everyone to look for MP4 players before buying an iPod.

You read my mind . . . an iPod is the last thing I'd buy.Yea I agree. I borrow alot my mates iPods and they do my head in!
Though, I do like the navigation thingy and the headphones

ChrisI have not had time to look at this but have heard about it and all the positives but, do these new ones still have a hard drive or did they throw flash memory in there?

I am a sandisk 4 gig owner I swear by them, I like flash drives better

What is that piece of

You're supposed to use that to listen to music, not to watch videos on a 5cm screen.

I have a 4GB MP3 that is probably more practical than that thing.

I prefer flash drive over HD but when it comes to mass storage (10GB+) I like Hard Drives.Yh im not to keen in i-pods , i use my nokia E61 for music , i-pods confuse me ........Yea, I'm gonna sound like a sucker here*
I swear by the flash drive units but come on! Nothing is sexier than the Ipod! I bought 2 30 gig units for my kids last xmas and man, they are cool looking...I keep hearing from my older peers that they want wifi with their units ? Once someone makes the classy decision to not make you use a subscription (which I doubt) service to UTILIZE the new wireless stuff, it will be a number 1# seller ! jmo
well, iPODS look cool, but that's the only plus it gets.

If Apple COULD license out iPOD technology to authorized designers / makers, then that would be awesome. Make the iPOD more user-friendly and whatnot.

Like, say, apple gets paid every time a device with the iPOD technology gets sold... Bump of the Week...yeah, i agreed to said that ipod would be the stupid ever thing i buyed.
Even i'm using it now, while replying every CH forum.LOL!I-pod = government spying technology If someone would buy me an iPod, the government can spy on me as much as they want.how about the ipod rip offs that you can find in any tourist area? ive seen a couple places around that advertise mp4 players and then when you see it, its ALMOST exactly like an ipod but for 80 dollars. whats the deal with these, are these CRAP?Yes.

Solve : Google Earth now has flight simulator?

Answer»

Author: Joe Martin
Published: 3rd Sep 2007

The new version of Google Earth comes with a fun flight simulator EASTER egg included.

The new version of Google Earth comes with a fun flight simulator easter egg included.
Google is like the Tesco of the internet; slowly expanding into every market and edging closer to total world domination with every second. Short of all the geeks in the world collectively deciding to go outside and do something constructive (NEVER happen), there is no real way that the God of Search Engines can be stopped - it's reached critical mass now.

Ok, maybe I exaggerate, but it still stands that Google has just expanded once more, devouring yet more of our free time.

In a new update to Google Earth, a free 3D map of the entire planet, several new features have been added. While the Google Sky add-on is nice enough, it's the Google Flight Simulator which is the most interesting addition.

Marco Gallotta first uncovered the hidden feature, which is activated thusly according to Marco himself;

"Once you've started it all up, explored Google Sky a bit, then all you have to do is hit Ctrl+Alt+A (if you're running OS X it's Command+Option+A; some people have reported that Ctrl+A or Ctrl+Windows+A work when the standard Ctrl+Alt+A does not)."

A dialog box will then pop which offers the choice between two planes; an F16 Fighter or a SR22 four-seater. The hidden simulator even comes with full joystick support and a save option which remembers your last position. Eager pilots can choose any RUNWAY in any airport to take off from and start smashing their planes into the ground needlessly. That's all flight simulators are good for, right?

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2007/09/03/google_earth_now_has_flight_simulator/1Nice find.
I may check that out at some point.Does this mean i get the Shuttle Endeavor if i use Google Space ? ? ?*censored*. I don't know ? i didn't actually read my POST ? Yeah, it's a PRETTY neat flight sim.that looks neat, i love google and flight sim!

Solve : AMD Plans to Slash Pricing of Dual-Core Chips Shortly?

Answer»

Advanced Micro Devices has notified its partners that starting from next Monday, the 8TH of October, it plans to decrease the pricing of some of its dual-core AMD Athlon 64 X2 chips. The price corrections will allow the world’s second largest maker of x86 microprocessors to get better positioned for holiday season. “As we begin a new quarter and PREPARE for the busiest time of the year, selected AMD dual-core desktop processors will have a reduction in suggested prices effective next Monday, October 8. This will be a great opportunity to upgrade customers to dual-core, as the AMD Athlon X2 5000+, 5200+, 5600+, 6000+ and 6400+ processors all will FEATURE new pricing,” a statement by AMD sent to partners published by AMDZone web-site reads.

The new exact new prices for the higher-end AMD dual-core microprocessors are unclear, but GIVEN that the fastest chip from the company is currently sold for $251, it is HIGHLY likely that the price corrections will not be substantial and will be generally meant to align pricing of AMD Athlon 64 X2 processors with mainboards based on AMD chipsets so that to attract attention of system integrators to AMD’s platforms.

http://www.neowin.net/index.php?act=view&id=42958I've seen some Intel Quad Core processors for around that price...

I really don't think it'll boost sales...or make the holiday shoppers jump for joy...I also agree that the reduction will probably be negligible...

I guess it'll be a wait and see...

Solve : Geek House Call Services: Expensive, Wrong And Could Be Steal...?

Answer»

As less tech savvy FOLKS start having computer problems, if they don't have in-house tech support (i.e., kids living at home) they tend to call or visit one of the growing number of computer fixit services -- many of which advertise the fact that they'll come to your home and FIX your computer. The problem, though, is that they're pretty expensive, have little training and quite often completely screw up the diagnosis. On top of that, they may snoop around your computer or even DOWNLOAD your hard drive. Many people probably suspected this, but when a Canadian TV station PUT ten such companies to the TEST with an easy-to-diagnose computer problem only three out of the ten accurately diagnosed the problem -- and then all three charged huge markups on the replacement part to fix it.

Solve : IBM and Second Life to build 3D internet ??

Answer»
IBM and Second Life creator Linden Lab have teamed up to further advance digital 3D worlds.

The partnership seeks to accelerate the development of open standards to promote the CREATION of more digital 3D environments.

The project will look at secure transactions and ways to increase the stability and quality of service of 3D platforms. The companies will also seek to introduce interoperability by creating universal avatars.

Most 3D platforms currently lack interoperability. A Second Life player, for example, cannot stroll around in a Google Maps projection.

Such interoperability would allow 3D worlds to rapidly increase their appeal, argued Collin Parris, vice president for digital convergence at IBM.

"As the 3D internet becomes more integrated with the current web, users will demand more from these environments and WANT virtual worlds that are fit for BUSINESS," he said.

3D applications are believed to offer a better user experience than traditional 2D environments.

Beyond games and social playgrounds such as Second Life, EXAMPLES of applications that incorporate a third dimension into the interface include Google Earth and Microsoft's Virtual Earth.

IBM kicked off a research initiative last year to further explore 3D internet applications as part of a larger project.

Sun Microsystems is eyeing the 3D internet as a way to enable employee collaboration.

The firm released an open SOURCE project earlier this year called Wonderland which offers a 3D platform similar to Second Life's.

Solve : T-Shirt Helps Find Hotspots?

Answer»

Nothing says GEEK shirt like this! Love it.

With at least one municipal Wi-Fi project being proposed or abandoned seemingly every day, and big carriers such as BT Group PLC turning to their subscribers' Wi-Fi routers to make Wi-Fi available, it's hard to know exactly where you can GET online these days. But a T-shirt going on sale late this month could solve that problem for you and everyone around you.

he Wi-Fi Detector Shirt, which the online store ThinkGeek Inc. will sell for US$29.99, has glowing bars on the front that LIGHT up in waves when there's an IEEE 802.11b or 802.11g network in range. As with a network strength indicator on a cell phone or PC, more bars light up as the signal gets stronger. A cartoon of a CLASSIC radio tower and the simple expression "802.11" say it all for people who are looking for this kind of thing. ThinkGeek employee Ty Liotta developed the shirt, which is only available in black.

Solve : Microsoft Confirms Stealth Updating Mucks Up XP Restore?

Answer»

Microsoft Corp. FRIDAY confirmed that Windows XP users who repair the operating system cannot update their PCs with the LATEST PATCHES because of a file INCLUDED with the stealth update pushed out to machines this summer.

LinkAmazing...

We've had a lot of posts here from users unable to update...

I guess this gets filed in Microsft's "Ooopppsss!" file...

Nice find, Nathan...Stories like these only reinforce my decision to transition from Windows to Linux as my primary desktop OS. With Linux, the OS is yours to do with as you please. With Windows, you basically rent the OS from Microsoft. Microsoft licenses you "to use" THEIR operating system.

I also like using my PC knowing that with Linux, I am virtually immune from all the malware that is available via the Internet. By keeping my Linux up-to-date, not logging in as root, and using a firewall, I don't even bother to install any antivirus application.

This is crazy!!!Yeah does seem a little crazy. But as much as I'd hate to say it she was knowingly breaking the law by sharing copyrighted music.I only ever download music with the author's permission (hey, if there's a download link on the songwriter's site, it's OK). However, I still understand this is ludicrous. The woman needs a reprimand-ish fine, not a "debt for the rest of your life" fine! FIRST of all, half of todays entertainers should be
paying the audience.

Well,I come from an earlier time, being an old man.
We recorded songs off the radio instead of buying
them back then and no one cared.

So,is it illegal today to record songs off the radio?

Besides,if everyone turned their back on the music
industry for 1 year those people would back off fast.

End of Rant!!! Excuse the interruption of your regular

Should be... but regardless of what you think of the law, she did break that law, and should be punished for it.

She did?

I know it SAYS, "...after a jury decided she illegally shared music online." , but the rest of the article seems to indicate that she was not charged with anything. In other words, this was a civil suit.

Therein lies a BIG difference. With crimes, one is considered innocent until proven guilty, beyond a reasonable doubt. If I recall correctly, in civil matters, the measure is a preponderance of evidence, which is a heck of a lot less.

I can't imagine how a good lawyer could not get a defendant off on one of these cases though. I didn't see anything about the details of how they proved she did anything. That, to me, would seem to be very, very difficult.

It is a bit scary at times.

Solve : ASUS Motherboard Ships With Embedded Linux, Web Browser?

Answer»
The good folks over at ASUS have sent over the P5E3 Deluxe, which is based upon Intel's new X38 Chipset and continues in the usual ASUS fashion of pushing new (and often unexpected) innovations onto the motherboard. Without spoiling the review of this motherboard that will be published shortly, the ASUS P5E3 Deluxe is one of the most innovative motherboards we have SEEN to date and it packs one very exciting and unusual feature. Embedded onto the P5E3 Deluxe is a Linux environment that features a Firefox-rebranded web browser and the Skype VoIP client! WITHIN five seconds of turning on this $360 USD gaming/enthusiast motherboard, you can be USING Linux and surfing the Internet. On this motherboard the feature is known as ASUS Express Gate, which is powered by something called SplashTop. SplashTop is an instant-on Linux desktop being created by DeviceVM. SplashTop isn't even launching for a few more days (October 10), but in this article we have more details on this embedded Linux environment as well as screenshots and our thoughts with what will hopefully come next for this Linux environment.

Link

Video on YouTube of Express gateNice. I wish intel would add that feature to their motherboards. I want one! One day, all motherboards will be like this. I see it is advertised in the UK for £200 UKP (well £199.48 inc VAT). If it was half that price I would definitely say it'll be my next motherboard.

Quote
it would be very nice if SplashTop would support mounting connected storage devices WHETHER it be USB or SATA, which would make this environment especially handy for backup purposes as well as system recovery.

Well, having just run Norton Ghost 8 under Windows XP MiniPE off a 1 GB pendrive to restore a Ghost image (stored on my USB external HDD) of my XP install I can say "aye" to that, it would be handy to have the functionality built-in. handy but not essential I suppose. BIG shout goin' out to Norton Ghost there... (I tried the XP SP3 beta build 3205 that's floating around - my advice - DON'T!)

Solve : Trojan attacks jump 500 per cent?

Answer» http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2201815/trojan-attacks-jump-500-per

There has been a sharp hike in the volume of cyber-crime attacks designed to steal personal information, new research reveals.

Microsoft's most recent Security Intelligence REPORT shows that attackers are increasingly targeting personal information to make a profit. The report found that during the first half of 2007, 31.6 million phishing scams were detected, an increase of more than 150 per cent over the previous SIX months.

The study also shows a 500 per cent increase in Trojan downloaders and droppers, malicious code used to install files such as Trojans, password stealers, keyboard loggers and other malware on users' systems. Two notable families of Trojans detected are specifically targeted at stealing data and banking information.

The Redmond company also released findings from a recent survey of more than 3,600 security, privacy and marketing executives across a VARIETY of industries in the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany, including financial services, healthcare, technology and government. Conducted by the Ponemon Institute LLC, the study found that as security threats increasingly TARGET personal information, more collaboration among security and privacy officers is critical to avoid costly compromises or breaches of personal information.

The study for the Microsoft Trustworthy Computing Group, titled Microsoft Study on Data Protection and Role Collaboration Within Organisations, found that organisations with poor collaboration were more than twice as likely as organisations with good collaboration to have suffered a data breach in the past two years.

Scott Charney, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing Group, said: "As a company committed to providing privacy and security solutions for our customers, we will continue to evolve our products, practices and processes as security and privacy become increasingly interdependent and as threats evolve.

"There is no one-size-fits-all solution for organisations looking to effectively collaborate and protect data, but we hope this research will be a good resource for companies thinking about how to approach this."
As usual Redmond is about 10 months behind the curve.Quote

Solve : SpeedFan 4.28?

Answer» http://www.download.com/SpeedFan/3000-2094_4-10067444.html?tag=nl.e415

Publisher's description of SpeedFan

From Almico Software:

SpeedFan monitors voltages, fan speeds, and temperatures in computers with hardware monitor chips. It can even access SMART information for hard disks that support this feature, and show hard-disk temperatures if that's supported. SpeedFan fully supports SCSI disks and can even change the FSB on some hardware (but this should be considered a bonus feature). At the lowest LEVEL, SpeedFan is a hardware monitor software that can access temperature sensors, but MAINLY it can control fan speeds (depending on the capabilities of your sensor chip and your hardware) according to the temperatures inside your PC, thus reducing noise and power consumption.

Editor's review of SpeedFan

This free program offers some useful system details to those savvy enough to understand its results. SpeedFan's tabbed interface isn't hard to navigate, but most run-of-the-mill users won't be able to make head or tail of the data this utility provides. The program's system-tray icon tells you the temperature of your PC's hard drive, and you can receive information on voltage and fan speeds. The utility can display SMART data and includes a TOOL for resetting motherboard clocks. Basically, if this review makes no sense to you, SpeedFan is above your head and won't be worth downloading. However, PC technicians and those who like to do their own system maintenance might as well take a look at this application, particularly since it costs nothing.

On my VISTA, it did read only one core temp, but anyway, it doesn't say, it supports Vista.4.28? That's a seriously old version! I've been using Speedfan on my Shuttle XPC for 3 years now, I'm on version 4.32, the latest stable version is 4.33, which is said to support Vista.

I would not bother with OUTDATED versions from Download.com when I can get the latest one from the actual Speedfan website

Solve : First message sent on the Internet?

Answer»

Since this date is approaching and I just finished writing this document I thought this would be worth mentioning and putting up on the calender.

Quote

On Friday OCTOBER 29, 1969 the first Internet MESSAGE was sent from computer science Professor Leonard KleinRock's laboratory at UCLA after the second piece of network equipment was INSTALLED at SLI. This connection not only enabled the first transmission to be made but is also considered to be the first Internet backbone.

The first message to be distributed was: "LO", which was an attempt at "LOGIN" by Charley S. Kline to log into the SLI computer from UCLA. However, the message was UNABLE to be completed because the SLI system crashed. Shortly after the crash the issue was resolved and he was able to log into the computer.

It should have been "Watson COME here"...

Solve : 3-Way SLI here in November??

Answer» Now this is somewhat ridiculous !

When the concept of bonding multiple GPUs to boost performance first emerged years ago, it was looked at with a bit of awe. Due to power and cost issues, it didn't quite take off – the 3DFX Voodoo 5 is a classic example of this. When round two came into play and Nvidia offered a relatively low-cost way to double up on video cards, people loved it.

Even today, though vendor support for SLI is less than stellar, it has taken off and remains one of the most popular ways to deck out newer systems. Of course, if you can add two cards to a system it'll only be a matter of time before people want to add three.

Thus, it's no big surprise at all to see Nvidia getting ready to make three-way SLI possible. In about a month from now, Nvdia will likely be launching their refresh to SLI with the ability to put up to three cards in such a configuration. There are a few caveats: It requires new drivers, a particular chipset and particular cards:

However, to get 3-way SLI up and running, there are a few requirements. Firstly you need a 3-way SLI drivers. Secondly, you need either a 680i SLI or the upcoming 780a/780i SLI board with at least 3 PCIe x16 SLOTS. Thirdly, you need either GeForce 8800 ULTRA or GeForce 8800 GTX cards as these cards have 2 SLI connectors on each card. Even the upcoming G92 cards will not support since it has only 1 SLI connector. Fourthly, you would need a 3-way SLI bridge card.
All of that sounds very expensive, but sometimes extreme performance comes at a cost. Still, even if it costs an arm and a leg, it's impressive to think of and even nicer to look at. Just make sure you have a 1500W PSU ready to handle the load of your new space heater.

http://www.techspot.com/news/27425-3way-sli-here-in-november.html

HEH. that's pretty crazy. I wish instead of adding more cards to increase performance they would just work on new ways to increase the performance of a single card. Maybe something like adding multiple cores to the GPU? I'm sure it's easier said than done, but a 1500W PSU and three separate cards is going to cost an arm and a leg and SEEMS excessive.10-4 Nathan, I am quite satisfied and just plain happy with my own (1) 8800 gts

I guess I am not hardcore enuff! I've got a system here running dual 7900 GTX in SLI mode. But if I were to want to upgrade my video card I'd have to upgrade two instead of just one. Two is bad enough, I'd hate having to even consider upgrading three video cards. Maybe this is a way for video card manufacturers to suck some more money out of customers. Think of how MUCH money you're saving on the heat bill though...

Solve : Blazingly fast Internet2 just got 10 times faster?

Answer»

The ultrahigh-speed Internet2 network just got 10 times faster, partly in anticipation of rising demand for capacity after the world's largest particle COLLIDER opens near Geneva next year.

Until recently, the Internet2 had a theoretical LIMIT of 10 gigabits per second, which is thousands of times faster than standard home broadband connections. By sending DATA using 10 different colors, or wavelengths, of light over a SINGLE cable, operators are boosting the network's capacity to 100 Gbps.

That means a high-quality version of the movie "The MATRIX" could be sent in a few seconds rather than half a minute over the old Internet2 and several hours over a typical home broadband line.

Solve : Windows XP SP3 ~ to Include Some Vista Features?

Answer»

A Web site that leaked details of Windows XP Service Pack 3 over the weekend claimed that the update INCLUDES several new features, including some borrowed from Windows Vista.

According to NeoSmart Technologies, Windows XP SP3 build 3205, which was released to beta testers on Sunday, includes four new features among the 1,000-plus individual hot fixes and patches that have been issued since XP2's debut three years ago.

Features backported from Vista, said NeoSmart, include Network Access Protection (NAP), an enterprise policy enforcement technology that inspects client PCs before they access a corporate network, then updates the machines if necessary or blocks them if they don't meet specified security criteria.

Other additions range from a kernel module containing several encryption algorithms that can be accessed by third-party developers, to a new Windows activation model that doesn't require users to enter a product key
.

Microsoft had previously announced SP3 support for NAP, which is part of Windows Vista and will be included in the not-yet-finalized Windows Server 2008.

Windows XP SP3, which Microsoft has said will be released early in 2008, will be one more move by the developer to extend the lifespan of the six-year-old operating system. Last month, for example, Microsoft gave Windows XP a five-month reprieve by pushing back the end of retail sales and sales of XP-powered PCs by large resellers to June 30, 2008.

And last week, Microsoft debuted a new "get-legal" program that lets companies purchase large quantities of Windows XP Professional licenses through their usual resellers.

Microsoft was not immediately available for comment on the leak, or the new features touted by NeoSmart.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,138251/article.htmlIt makes no sense from a business perspective for Microsoft to release XP SP3 while also trying to motivate people to migrate to Vista. XP SP3 is going to increase XP's lifespan for another two or three years (if it is nearly as successfuly as SP2).

SP1 for Vista is due out within the next few months, but so many users are already so furious with Vista that it might not help improve Vista's tarnished reputation. It looks like Vista is just a repeat of Windows ME. Too many problems for the amount of hype. Looking forward to Windows 2010. (Is there a name for it yet?)
Seems like every other version of windows is the winner. Windows 3.1 (ok?), 95 (bad), 98SE (good), ME (bad), XP (good), Vista (bad), next? What this shows is the lack of foresight / hands on approach to marketing his business,,,, like the STOCK of his company... Bill failed miserably! Gates turned out to be a born again LIB and his company sucks since 2--- *

Don't get me wrong... I still like and use XP professional but... will never touch Vista ... too much hardware/ driver concerns on my part.... Solve : Comcast cuts Internet service to bandwidth hogs?

Answer»
Shutting down big downloaders

By Kim Hart
The Washington Post
Updated: 2:11 a.m. ET Sept 7, 2007

The rapid growth of online videos, music and games has created a NEW Internet SIN: using it too much.

Comcast has punished some transgressors by cutting off their Internet service, arguing that excessive downloaders hog Internet capacity and slow down the network for other customers. The company declines to reveal its download limits.

"You have no way of knowing how much is too much," said Sandra Spalletta of Rockville, whose Internet service was suspended in March after Comcast sent her a letter warning that she and her teenage son were using too much bandwidth. They cut back on downloads but were still disconnected. She said the company would not tell her how to monitor their bandwidth use in order to comply with the limits.

"You want to think you can rely on your home Internet service and not wake up one morning to find it turned off," said Spalletta, who filed a complaint with the Montgomery County Office of Cable and Communication Services. "I thought it was unlimited service."

As Internet service providers try to keep up with the demand for increasingly sophisticated online entertainment such as high-definition movies, streaming TV shows and interactive games, such caps could become more common, some analysts said.

How many have been cut off?
It's unclear how many customers have lost Internet service because of overuse. So far, only Comcast customers have reported being affected. Comcast said only a small fraction of its customers use enough bandwidth to warrant pulling the plug on their service.

Cable companies are facing tough competition from telephone giants like AT&T and Verizon, which are installing new cables capable of carrying more Internet traffic.

The cable companies collectively spent about $90 billion in the past decade to improve their networks. And on cable networks, several hundred subscribers often share an Internet connection, so one high-traffic user could slow the rest of a neighborhood's connections. Phone lines are run directly to each home, so a single bandwidth hog will not slow other connections.

As Internet users make more demands of the network, cable companies in particular could soon end up with a critically short supply of bandwidth, according to a report released this month by ABI Research, a New York market-research firm. This could lead to a BIGGER crackdown on heavy bandwidth users, said the report's author, Stan Schatt.

"These new applications require huge amounts of bandwidth," he said. Cable "used to have the upper hand because they basically enjoyed monopolies, but there are more competitive pressures now."

To trigger a disconnection warning, customers would be downloading the equivalent of 1,000 songs or four full-length movies every day. Comcast spokesman Charlie Douglas declined to reveal specific bandwidth limits.

"It's our responsibility to make sure everyone has the best service POSSIBLE," he said, "so we have to address abusive activities so they won't damage the experience for other customers. "

Companies have argued that if strict limits were disclosed, customers would use as much capacity as possible without tipping the scale, causing networks to slow to a crawl.

Some aware, some not
Some customers are unaware they are using so much capacity, sometimes because neighbors are covertly connecting through unsecured wireless routers. When they are told of that possibility, many curb their use after an initial warning, Douglas said. Others, however, may be running bandwidth-hungry servers intended for small businesses from their homes, which can bog down a network serving a neighborhood. Comcast said it gives customers a month to fix problems or upgrade to business accounts before shutting off their Internet service.

Joe Nova of North Attleboro, Mass., lost Internet service after Comcast told him that he was using too much bandwidth to watch YouTube videos, listen to Internet radio stations and chat using a Web camera. He and other customers who complained of being shut off said they were not running servers from their homes.

"Sure, I'm online a lot, but there's no way I could have been consuming that much capacity," Nova said.

Other Internet service providers, including Time Warner Cable, Verizon and AT&T, say they reserve the right to manage their networks, but have not yet suspended service to subscribers. Smaller Internet service providers RCN in Herndon, Leros Technologies in Fairfax and OpenBand in Dulles said they do not cap bandwidth use.

Some AT&T customers use disproportionately high amounts of Internet capacity, "but we figure that's why they buy the service," said Michael Coe, a spokesman for the company.

Cox Communications, which provides Internet and cable services to parts of Northern Virginia and Maryland, said the bandwidth demand on its network has doubled every year for the past six years. It has boosted its speeds twice in the past 18 months to keep up and offers tiered service plans for heavier users, spokesman Alex Horwitz said.

"We don't spend a lot of time enforcing [bandwidth] caps, but we contact customers when their usage is egregious enough for it to impact the network," he said. "Instances are few and far between."

'Unfair and arbitrary'
When Comcast canceled service to Frank Carreiro, who lives in a Salt Lake City suburb, he started a blog about the experience. His wife and six children then relied on sluggish dial-up Internet access until a phone company offered DSL service in his neighborhood.

"For a lot of people, it's Comcast or it's nothing," he said.

Bob Williams, director of HearUsNow.org, a consumer Web site run by Consumers Union, said the vagueness of Comcast's rules is "unfair and arbitrary."

"They're cutting service off to the people who want to use it the most," he said.

Schatt, the ABI Research analyst, said he expects cable companies to spend about $80 billion over the next five years to increase network capacity. In addition, they may acquire airwaves at an upcoming federal auction and could lay fiber-optic lines over their existing cables. Switching to digital-only programming could also help conserve capacity.

Comcast, Cox and Time Warner say they have more than enough capacity to meet demand and are adding new technologies to strengthen signals. Bruce McGregor, senior analyst at Current Analysis, a research firm in Sterling, said the bandwidth bottleneck is not yet a crisis for cable companies, but it could intensify with competition from phone companies.

Companies like Comcast "need to address people who are major drains on the network" without angering consumers, he said. "They're not the only game in town anymore."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20633771/Shocking.... Sue them I think it's disgusting how ISPs do this without telling them the limits.
Over here we get companies advertising unlimited bandwidth with a hidden fair use policy in the small print . . . then they come out of the woodwork one day and cut you off for using too much bandwidth.
It's not unlimited if you can use too much . . . or am I the only one who thinks that limited isn't unlimited?Quote from: Calum on September 07, 2007, 09:14:03 AM

It is semantics.
It is unlimited, in that it is on 24/7. It is limited, apparently, in how much data you can move during that time.
Basically, it is a rotten deal.

I can understand the cable companies' point, but it doesn't matter .... they should have told these people what the deal was before they signed up - not lured them in, then cut them off.

Where it really stinks is when they won't tell the customer what the limit is.
The customer is perfectly just in that case of claiming there is no limit.... else the company would tell them. There must be no limit then.
This will wind up in court eventually.
That doesn't mean that the result will be fair though. Strange things that defy common sense happen all the time.

The onus to find the real solution is on the cable companies', and that means SPENDING time and money, which of course they don't want to do.
Suppose they had means to throttle a customer. When they detect what they publish as being too much in a given period of time, they could flip a switch and throttle that customer down.
That would solve their problem, without completely cutting off the customer.
Of course, the customer would still be aggravated, but would have less of a
case.

Another interesting article about Comcast cutting some Internet traffic.

Solve : In millions of Windows, the perfect Storm is gathering?

Answer» http://observer.guardian.co.uk/business/story/0,,2195730,00.html

Quote
A spectre is haunting the net but, outside of techie circles, nobody seems to be talking about it. The threat it represents to our security and wellbeing may be less dramatic than anything posed by global terrorism, but it has the potential to wreak much more havoc. And so far, nobody has come up with a good idea on how to counter it.

It's called the Storm worm. It first appeared at the beginning of the year, hidden in email attachments with the subject line: '230 dead as storm batters Europe'. The PC of anyone who opened the attachment became infected and was secretly ENROLLED in an ever-growing network of compromised machines called a 'botnet'. The term 'bot' is a derivation of 'software robot', which is another way of saying that an infected machine effectively becomes the obedient slave of its - illicit - owner. If your PC is compromised in this way then, while you may own the machine, someone else controls it. And they can use it to send spam, to participate in distributed denial-of-service attacks on banks, e-commerce or government websites, or for other even more sinister purposes.

Storm has been spreading steadily since last January, gradually constructing a huge botnet. It affects only computers running Microsoft Windows, but that means that more than 90 per cent of the world's PCs are vulnerable. Nobody knows how big the Storm botnet has become, but reputable security professionals cite estimates of between one million and 50 million computers worldwide. To date, the botnet has been used only intermittently, which is disquieting: what it means is that someone, somewhere, is quietly building a doomsday machine that can be rented out to the highest bidder, or used for purposes that we cannot yet predict.

Of course, computer worms are an old story, which may explain why the mainstream media has paid relatively little attention to what's been happening. Old-style worms - the ones with names like Sasser and Slammer - were written by vandals or hackers and designed to spread as quickly as possible. Slammer, for example, infected 75,000 computers in 10 minutes, and therefore attracted a lot of attention. The vigour of the onslaught made it easier for anti-virus firms to detect the attack and come up with countermeasures. In that sense, old-style worms were like measles - an infectious disease that shows immediate symptoms.

Storm is different. It spreads quietly, without drawing attention to itself. Symptoms don't appear immediately, and an infected computer can lie dormant for a long time. 'If it were a disease,' says one expert, Bruce Schneier, 'it would be more like syphilis, whose symptoms may be mild or disappear altogether, but which will come back years later and eat your brain.'

Schneier thinks Storm represents 'the future of malware' because of the technical virtuosity of its design. For example, it works rather like an ant colony, with separation of duties. Only a small fraction of infected hosts spread the worm. A much smaller fraction are command-and-control servers; the rest stand by to receive orders. By only allowing a small number of hosts to propagate the virus and act as command-and-control servers, Storm is resilient against attack because even if those hosts shut down, the network remains largely intact and other hosts can take over their duties.

More fiendishly, Storm doesn't have any noticeable PERFORMANCE impact on its hosts. Like a parasite, it needs the host to be intact and healthy for its own survival. This MAKES it harder to detect, because users and network administrators won't notice any abnormal behaviour most of the time.

And instead of having all hosts communicate with a central server or set of servers, Storm uses a peer-to-peer networking protocol for its command-and-control servers. This makes the botnet much harder to disable because there's no centralised control point to be identified and shut down.

It gets worse. Storm's delivery mechanism changes regularly. It BEGAN as PDF spam, then morphed into e-cards and YouTube invites. It then started posting blog-comment spam, again trying to trick viewers into clicking infected links. Similarly, the Storm email changes all the time, with new, topical subject lines and text. And last month Storm began attacking anti-spam sites focused on identifying it. It has also attacked the personal website of a malware expert who published an analysis of how it worked.

At the moment, nobody knows who's behind this. Is it a Russian mafia operation? An al-Qaeda scheme? The really creepy thing is that, to date, the controllers of Storm have used it for such relatively trivial purposes. The suspicion has to be that they are biding their time, waiting for the moment when, say, 100 million naive Windows users have CLICKED on an infected link and unwittingly added their machines to the botnet.

Only then will we know what a perfect storm in cyberspace is like.

[emailprotected]

Quote
Today, Enright said that Storm is about one-tenth of its former size. His most recent data counts 20,000 infected PCs available at any one time, out of a total network of about 160,000 computers. "The size of the network has been falling pretty rapidly and pretty consistently," he said.

Solve : WGA removed from Internet Explorer 7 update?

Answer»

October 4, 2007, 3:37 PM EST

Microsoft has released an updated version of its Internet Explorer 7 Web browser that does not require Windows Genuine Advantage validation to check whether users are running “genuine” Windows before allowing them to download. Program Manager Steve Reynolds made the announcement today on Microsoft’s IE Team blog:

“Because Microsoft takes its commitment to help protect the entire Windows ecosystem seriously, we’re updating the IE7 installation EXPERIENCE to make it available as broadly as possible to all Windows users. With today’s ‘Installation and Availability Update,’ Internet Explorer 7 installation will no LONGER require Windows Genuine Advantage validation and will be available to all Windows XP users.”
Of course, the move could also be seen as a strike against Firefox. The popular open source browser has been eating into IE’s market share, with some surveys putting Firefox usage anywhere between 10 and 40 percent of the total browser market, depending on the region. This move will basically allow IE7 to grow its install base to as many systems possible, INCLUDING those running pirated copies of XP.

Changes found in this refreshed version of IE 7 include a new overview for first time users, the menu bar is now visible by default, and a new MSI installer for enterprises and larger organizations that simplifies deployment for IT administrators.

Solve : MySpace to debut casual-game site in January < probably will suck ??

Answer»

By Caroline McCarthy – October 23, 2007, 4:51 AM PDT

News Corp.-owned social-networking site MYSPACE.com announced on Tuesday that it has PARTNERED with casual-game maker Oberon Games, part of Oberon Media, to create a "channel" of social games.

Slated to launch in January, MySpace Games will allow users of the service to play games against other MySpace members and embed game WIDGETS in their profiles.

Additionally--as it seems that there just can't be a social-networking ANNOUNCEMENT without talk of the "D" word--developers will be able to submit ideas for new games, and Oberon will be providing a developer toolkit when the game site launches.

Currently, the games.myspace.com subdomain encourages users to "STAY tuned for updates." It offers them an array of video game-related videos instead of actual games.

http://www.webware.com/8301-1_109-9802447-2.html?tag=cnetfd.mtI think they're trying to copy some of the features found on Facebook that's making it so popular in hopes to compete. However, I believe they need A LOT more than just simple widgets and games that are only going to help clutter the MySpace pages even more in order to not get overtaken by Facebook.

Solve : Flock 1.0 beta?

Answer»

Is this something interesting to any MEMBERS ?

Editor's review of Flock < cnet

There's a lot to like in this beta release of Flock 1.0, if you're into social networking. Built on Firefox, it's designed to make interfacing with social networking sites extremely easy.

The browser loads pages well, but the Quick Search dialog box doesn't like it when you switch search engines, it just opens them in a new browser. Most, but not all, regular Firefox EXTENSIONS work, too.

Flock's social network savvy sidebar is the reason to get this browser. Nine buttons at the top of the collapsible sidebar make accessing any of your social networking or frequently used Web sites easier than Twittering what you had for breakfast. Each button either helps you get your message out FASTER, like dragging-and-dropping photos into Flickr, or helps you read your friends' messages quicker, like the integrated RSS feed reader.

The People button turns the sidebar into a nifty way to track all your social networking ACCOUNTS. Your avatar is displayed on the left, while the right contains links for new messages and new comments. The bottom holds the links to upload new media when applicable and a hot link to open or close your media stream.

There are also hot links to most major blogging sites, and if you CHOOSE to configure it for your own self-published blog, Flock guides you through the process. Even though it's resource-heavy, Flock is the way to go if Twittering, Facebooking, or YouTubing is how you spend most of your online time.

http://www.download.com/Flock/3000-2356_4-10568239.html?tag=nl.e415&pid=10759001Huh. Seems like a pretty interesting program and the uses and editor review seems pretty positive. I'm not really that involved in Social Networking though to make me want to switch from Firefox to it.

Heh, yeah not something you'd expect or really even want to hear in the description of a product relating to computer gaming. I can't IMAGINE too many players who'd want something like this. Although being able to ACTUALLY FEEL the direction in which bullets are being shot at you could give you an added advantage.

I could see the Army wanting to use these too. Good way to train the soldiers especially if getting shot REALLY hurts.
