Solve : Google to purchase Motorola Mobile?

Answer» Full StoryYes and the Google offer is a 63% premium over the last closing price of Motorola--oh to have been a shareholder. How come no one ever calls me BEFORE on these things? truenorthYou didn't get my e-mail ? ?...

Shame.I GOT it. Thanks Patio.

Anytime.... Motorola Mobility was a spinoff of Motorola (now known as Motorola Solutions) in Jan. 2011.  Their stock has been going down for years.  In 2006, it was 160, now 40.  Spinning it off was a way to make it attractive for sale.  LOOKS like it worked.  Even if you were a shareholder of MSI, you'd still be at a loss with the sale of MM.  For every 8 shares of MSI, you got 1 share of MM.  Still wish you were a shareholder?CC good on you to finesse my post --as one that normally pays very close attention to detail (the devil is in the details). I of course meant the MM stock --the one that WOULD have made me rich.truenorthGoogle has now been downgraded by S&P:  HTTP://news.yahoo.com/p-says-sell-googles-shares-motorola-deal-204116780.html

Solve : HP may be calling it quits...?

Answer» Full Story...Think i may have found out why...

They are making a huge mistake in my mind..That plus the fact that they don't seem to be able to clearly define their objectives and STAY with them. I think they lack vision as to where they want to go. truenorthHP CEO is former CEO of SAP AG
Their software solutions are about the worst I have ever encountered.
I think one of the problems is that HP got their start by making high end, very expensive test equipment (and they still do).  One of the running jokes was that HP stood for high priced.  It was a low volume manufacturing process with very high profit margins.  Then they got into the PC business which is a high volume manufacturing process with low profit margins.  I'm not sure they ever completely adjusted to the difference.Over on Slashdot there's a thread about how HP    are   were liquidating their Touchpad stocks today at fire sale prices - $99 for the 16 GB and $149 for the 32 GB model. PEOPLE are reporting their local Best Buy stores sold out by noon and the OP of the Slashdot thread got laughed at because he said he went out last (Friday) night and bought one at Best Buy for $400 "to beat the rush", planning to use Price Match to get the difference refunded. This caused great merriment from people posting, quoting clauses in the Price Match terms that would appear to EXCLUDE his purchase...

Solve : Are Internet Explorer users dumb??

Answer»

Quote

Are Internet Explorer users dumb?
July 29, 2011|By Doug Gross, CNN

A survey used tests offered through Web searches or in online ads to measure the IQ of browser users.

Are users of other Web browsers smarter than the people who use Microsoft's Internet Explorer?

A new survey doesn't quite say so. But it sure as heck suggests it.

The survey by AptiQuant, a Vancouver-based Web CONSULTING company, gave more than 100,000 participants an IQ test, while monitoring which browser they used to take the test.

The result? Internet Explorer users scored lower than average, while Chrome, Firefox and Safari users were slightly above average.
No comment from me.  Internet Explorer is the best browser for downloading a better browser. LOLdoes using a browser that runs on the IE kernel count as using IE? They're not dumb, many of them just don't realise other browsers exist because it's the only browser which came preinstalled of machines in the past. I'd imagine Browser Choice is making a difference to that.Per the article:
Quote
Users of Opera, the Norway-based browser, scored the highest at well over 120. (What AptiQuant called its complete results included a bar graph showing the scores, but didn't appear to have text giving the EXACT numbers.)
Guess what I'm using?   No.

The only reason that Firefox, Opera, and Chrome are getting popular is because their main feature is BASICALLY:

-not Internet Explorer!

People have started to- for whatever reason- associate Internet Explorer with "bad security" even though FF, Chrome, and Opera have just as many shortcomings in that area, if not more. The Browsers are functionally equivalent, and come down to preference. People like to assume "oh, they just don't KNOW about other browsers" as if there simply being an alternative browser is somehow justification for a switch. It isn't.

Having to of course google for the source, Since geek-pm likes to completely ignore the fact that sources ought to be quoted for easy reference, it seems they only tested IE6 users, and from what I can tell, completely ignored users of IE7,8 and 9. This is called a "bias" and after revealing that there is one, the motives of the "study" become quite clear. It's a bunch of people using other browsers that want to make themselves look smart.

IE isn't part of the 'browser cabal'. The W3C only has two real implementers: IE, and everybody else. Everybody else, when they're confused about a spec, will look at whichever browser (other than IE) has already implemented it and copy it. Sometimes literally copy the code. The fact that IE has an independent implementation is a GOOD thing, and I don't see how anybody can claim otherwise.

What (for example) Chrome should do when confused about an aspect of the spec is go to the W3C and force them to make an official decision on the behavior required and update the spec. They don't do this; instead they just look at what Firefox did and copy it exactly. They also make no effort to get Firefox's behavior codified by the W3C and updated in the spec. Thus: the spec remains vague. Thus: it's fully possible for IE to implement the spec word-for-word and yet show a different result, or fail the "acid test" because the acid test isn't actually testing the standard but RATHER how close the implementation is to "everybody else". Thus: web developers *censored* at IE being different because they have the gall to actually implement based on the spec, when all the other browsers are not.

The reason "web developers", at least the whiny ones, are frustrated with IE are:
1) Most of them have the Slashdot-esque generic Microsoft hatred, where Microsoft is a scapegoat for everything wrong with computers ever
2) Most of them are lazy, and (not realizing how easy the task is compared to most) don't want to have to QA their products in more than one browser
3) Most of them value some abstract academic bullcrap like  "style separate from content" "semantical purity" "HTML needs to be XML-compatible" over getting their job done.

Anybody griping about IE being "behind" other browsers simply hasn't used IE. The real fact of the matter is:
-The 'standards' often do things in the most illogical, confusing way possible (getComputedStyle vs. currentStyle, textContent vs. innerText)
-The IE developers frequently (and rightly, IMO) call these confusing standards out and make their own version as well, which makes 50 times more sense
-The fact that the W3C ignores IE's innovations (99% of the time; there's always xmlHttpRequest) is a crime against all web developers everywhere. Note: Microsoft is a member/sponsor of the W3C, and they get TREATED like crap by them.

Oh, and look at the W3C standard for figuring which mouse button was pressed on a mouse event. It's so retarded, your brain will explode out your ears-- nobody at the W3C ever heard of holding down TWO mouse buttons simultaneously? IE, once again, implements it in a easy, rational fashion.

Which makes more sense:

Code: [Select]element.innerText="hi I am text in an element";
or this:

Code: [Select]document.getElementById('element').firstChild.data = "hi I am text in an element";

The former is only possible in IE. the latter is what the W3C recommends in place of innerText.

Compare IE's currentStyle property with the W3C's retardly inefficient "getComputedStyle" function-- what is a 12-character property in IE becomes 40 characters and two function calls in "everybody else". (IE supports the standard way, as well, I think, but the "standard way" is stupid and the fact that the IE-specific implementation is so much cleaner is a failing on the part of the standards body. They should be choosing the most obvious, simplest approach, not forcing web developers to use a 40 character properly and two function calls for no reason at all. Another, more conspiratorial theory is that the W3C ignores things like "innerText" and "currentStyle" specifically to spite Microsoft. And, Lastly:

BBC: Internet Explorer story was bogus

Think this story would have made a perfect April fools joke  , when I first read it I thought it as to be a jokeThe results of the iq test make sence to me. People who use computers more often in their daily lives are usually smarter than people who dont. They probably dont have as much street smarts but iq tests dont test that aspect of knowlege. The people that have to use computers more often find the need for a quality browser while the peoplewho dont just live with what is preinstalled. I am sure you would see a difference inresults if windows didnt ship with a web browser.

No they aren't. THat is one of the most ignorant statements I have ever heard.

Quote

Again, this is only a valid statement if you assume that Internet Explorer isn't a quality browser. It is. There is no significant difference between IE and the other browsers, aside from what I stated above, that they are the only ones who try to implement the spec independently.

Quote
I am sure you would see a difference inresults if windows didnt ship with a web browser.
Again, the "results" were fabricated so they were only made to further a specific agenda.

Solve : New malware secretly uninstalls your Antivirus and then takes its place?

Answer»

The following is a direct cut and paste of a post by Grinler, the owner and admin of Bleeping Computer. I think it's important enough to reproduce here:

Security researcher Xylitol recently wrote an article   about a new malware that performs some tricks to make you think your   computer is running normally, when it is in fact infected with a variety   of malware. Typically when a brand new computer infection is released,   your antivirus program is hard-pressed to update its malware database   fast enough to protect you from it. Even if the malware is installed   before your antivirus can detect it, the hopes are that once the malware   is added to the security software's virus database, it will then be   detected and removed.
What is a malware to do then to protect   itself from this tactic? Most malware  will terminate known antivirus   programs and other security programs when they are started. This,   though, can quickly become suspicious when various programs you try to   run are immediately terminated. This new malware offers a sneakier   solution; simply uninstall the antivirus software installed on the   computer and then run a malware that pretends to be it. This is exactly   what Xylitol found when researching a new Trojan that has been labeled   Trojan.FakeAV.LVT.
Xylitol reports that the Trojan.FakeAV.LVT arrives on the system as the filename flash-player.exe.   The file is probably named this way to trick people into thinking it is   related to Adobe Flash. Once run, it will perform a network test by   connecting to a variety of sites such as youtube.com, wikipedia.org, etc   to see if you have a Internet connection. It will then download further   files and the will search your computer for specific antivirus programs   that may be installed. If it detects a antivirus program it will then   reboot your computer into safe mode where it uninstalls your CURRENT the   antivirus program. When it is done uninstalling your antivirus software   it will reboot back into normal Windows mode and display alerts that   appear to be from your security software so that you think it is STILL   installed and working properly.
Xylitol reports that it currently detects and uninstalls the following antivirus programs:
Agava FirewallAvastMicrosoft Security EssentialsKaspersky Internet Security 7Kaspersky Internet Security 2009Kaspersky Internet Security 2010Kaspersky Internet Security 2011Kaspersky Anti-virus 7Kaspersky Anti-virus 2009Kaspersky Anti-virus 2010Kaspersky Anti-virus 2011AVG Anti-VirusAnvira AntiVirComodoMcAfeeMicrosoft DefenderESET NOD32 AntivirusESET Smart SecurityDr. WebNorton AntivirusOutpost FirewallPanda Antivirus      When I was testing a sample of this malware,   I installed a copy of Microsoft Security Essentials and then ran the   computer infection. Once the malware started, it quickly displayed an   alert with the message "System error! Access denied.",   which it is assumed was meant to trick the computer user into thinking   that there was a problem running the flash-player.exe program.
After some time, the computer was rebooted   and started in Windows Safe Mode. While in safe mode it proceeded to   uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials and then rebooted back normal   mode. Once the computer was rebooted and I was logged in, it displayed   an icon ()   in the Windows taskbar that was the same, if not similar, to the icon   for the antivirus software that was previously installed. When I clicked   on the icon it displayed the following image and text:
  Microsoft Security Essentials
      Enhanced Protection Mode

      Attention!
Microsoft Security Essentials operates under enhanced protection   mode. This is a temporary measure necessary for immediate response to   the threat from virus.
No action is required from you.  To further trick you into thinking   that your antivirus program is running normally, it will also randomly   display fake update messages stating that your program was updated. The   text of this message will be similar to:  Microsoft Security Essentials
Release date of the anti-virus databases:
    03/08/11 1:11:29PM
Your system is protected. When examining the files that this malware installed I see that it installed three different legitimate Bitcoin Miners called Phoenix, RPC, and UFA.   Bitcoins are an online currency that currently has a monetary value of   13 USD per Bitcoin. Though these programs are legitimate, they are being   used by the malware developer to generate, or mine, Bitcoins for the   developer while using your computer's CPU processing power. The program   that pretends to be your antivirus software was installed as C:\WINDOWS\update.tray-14-0\svchost.exe,   though this path may change per installation. This program also   downloads a variety of other malware such as the ZeroAccess rootkit.   Last, but not least, the downloader also generates a variety of files in   the C:\Windows folder that include:

  • Various malware files - Named sysdriver32_.exe, sysdriver32.exe, and l1rezerv.exe. It also generated hidden folders named C:\Windows\update. that contain more malware
  • unrar.exe - A legitimate unrar program for extracting the Bitcoin miners.
  • phoenix.rar - A legitimate Bitcoing miner.
  • ufa.rar - A legitimate Bitcoing miner.
  • rpcminer.rar - A legitimate Bitcoing miner.
  • geoiplist - A list that can be used to determine an infected computers geographic location based on its IP address.
  • proc_list1.log - A list of processes running on their computer and their associated process IDs.
  • iplist.txt   - Xylitol states that this is a list of IP addresses for other infected   computers. There were 766 IP addresses listed in this text file.
Without a doubt this malware is a  nasty   piece of work, but does INTRODUCE some interesting methods of income   generation and protection routines used by the malware developer and   their software. The infection itself, and its downloads, are by   themselves not very difficult to remove. Unfortunately, though, it   appears to be bundling the ZeroAccess rootkit, which is much harder to   remove. Running TDSSKiller   may remove the driver portion of the rootkit, but not all of the   infection, and thus you may be left with a MACHINE that is partially   cleaned.
Therefore, it is recommend that if you are infected with this malware to ask for help   in our Virus Removal forum to receive free one-on-one help in cleaning   your machine. Furthermore, I have seen many virus removal blogs stating   that all you need to do is run various programs such as Spyware Doctor,   MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Hitman Pro, etc to clean your computer   of this infection. Though these programs are all legitimate, the   instructions given will not work, so please do not purchase anything in   the hopes of a one-shot fix to remove this infection and the ZeroAccess   rootkit. It is for this reasons that we are not writing a removal guide   for this infection as there is no easy and simple method to remove it   all.
Thanks to Xylitol for the great writeup at his blog!I'm so glad I use Firefox with NosScript.
Thank's for the heads up Allan. For the moment i am not using any of the products mentioned.truenorthMy laptop has Microsoft Security Essentials (primary), SUPERAntiSpyware (backup - secondary), and Malwarebytes (backup - tertiary). Plus Untangle (firewall) within our network.

Never know when I might need it.  I have DOS 6.22, the last retail version, on 3.5 INCH diskettes and a DOS 6 "manual" that came with a Packard Bell computer.  Knowing some DOS commands was helpful when I was working at a Defense agency where I had some access to a UNIX system which involved working from a command prompt, or whatever it was called in UNIX.  For example, the ls command in UNIX listed the files in a directory like the dir command in DOS.  I too knew DOS fairly well and when my job required me to work on some UNIX machines knowing DOS made the transition to UNIX very easy.  And when I took FORTRAN I USED punch cards rather than paper tape.  I'm glad we don't have to do that anymore.

Yeah, it is an ARM with Linux embedded.

The trend to shrink the already miniaturized continues with the DreamPlug — a PC that is crammed inside of a plug that's even smaller than the tiny four-inch Xi3.
Globalscale Technologies claims their DreamPlug PC can save up to 96% on energy costs alone thanks to its five watts of power draw.
For $150, what do you get? A 1.2GHz Marvell Sheeva ARM processor, 512MB of DDR-2-800MHz RAM, 1GB of microSD storage for system files, two gigabit ethernet ports, two USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA 2.0 port, SD card slot, Wi-Fi b/g, Bluetooth and a headphone jack.
You might be satisfied with those specs, but just one thing: where is the GPU? The DreamPlug doesn't have one. Globalscale Technologies suggests the best use of the DreamPlug is for cloud computing, high end audio systems, home automation, network storage/monitoring and security/surveillance. So it looks like, unless your computing needs fall under a similar category, the DreamPlug is really just a dream PC.

Here is yet another dubious Linux related gadget.

TI, Texas Instruments, has a new chip called OMAP 4 and it has been certified for HD video use. The recent announcement SAYS the thing will work on Linux-based Android devices.

According to PC Mag, and many other sources, the surprise is that Netflix is going to get involved. Here is the quote:
Quote
    July 5, 2011 02:36pm EST
Netflix and Texas Instruments said Tuesday that Netflix has granted TI's OMAP 4 platform Netflix HD certification, meaning that OMAP 4-based phones will ship with the capability to stream high-definition Netflix movies.

Those phones should INCLUDE the LG Thrill 4G, and LG Optimus 3D; the upcoming Droid 3 supposedly includes an OMAP 4 chip, although that has yet to be confirmed. (The original Motorola Droid included an OMAP 3 chip, meaning that Motorola and TI have already forged a relationship.)

Officially, TI would say only that "devices with the OMAP 4 processor-driven Netflix application pre-installed will be launched in the near future." The OMAP 4 platform supports up to Android 2.3 "Gingerbread" today.

How is a device "dubious"? Unreliable? In what way? Some very early Wall-wart machines were known to have heat dissipation problems, but those issues have since been worked out. If you mean of dubious value, well, you might not think they are useful, but clearly some people do, otherwise there would be no market for them.

Yes, dubious value is more correct. I do not doubt that it works. I doubt is value.

Solve : RAM that holds memory without power.?

Answer»

NEC develops memory that stores data without using power

Full Story...If this is economical, and can be mass produced Then:
1. Flash memory will bite the dust.
2. The Hard Drive makers will go crazy
3. You may never reboot your computer again.
4. Everything with change all over again.

This is big news. Others are picking it up.

That's what i posted....EXCEPT yours is a Forum link...clik mine for the article.Sorry, I had a DNS problem I revised my post.
That was a really great find, Patio. No problem...Wow! In addition to all the other great advantages this innovation would bring. For me personally it would allow me to once again leave a computer running all the time without concern for "time of day" hydro charges being a consideration. Since it was introduced in my Province my wife and i have dramatically altered our computer usage to conform to economic considerations. Hopefully it can be accomplished with a retrofit or add-on. truenorthThis development is a big change.
Years ago persistent memory was possible, but rather expensive. I recall playing with some RTC chips unmade by EPSON. The chip was a clock that was powered by ccells that mounted on top of the chip package. Int contains a 4000 byte memory that you could use. It could keep data for a couple of years just on the c little batteries. But it was static memory, not dynamic RAM. It was very expensive to make large megabyte arrays with static RAM. The idea never WENT beyond just a small am mount of CMOS memory.

The article in Patios link is about a type of memory that does not need any power to hold data values. Hard to grasp the concept. No power at all. Just power we you use it.

Time will tell if this new development can be WIDELY used. It will bring in a new way of using computers. When you are done, just turn off your computer. Or in will turn off by itself in you wait ten seconds. Maybe less. You will double the battery time of a laptop. If we still have laptops then.

Wow!!! *whispers* Lets go steal RAM out of computers.
Seriously? so i just take RAM out of someone's PC, then put it into my PC, then i have access to his bank account? Better with computers with more than one stick of RAM! Patio, You did a great search. That is good. Thanks. This is not RAM, it is CAM.

Random Access Memory

VS

Content Addressable Memory

Just had to add that...Well it is RAM, really. NEC just decided to call it something else.My old Itronix has persistent RAM, 16MB.  It will hold contents for days with no power. TAM modules are proprietary.  It was a $6000 laptop in 1994, bought it used for $40.  Chassis (case) is magnesium.interesting. seems this technology would be more useful in flash drives and SSDs though. thanks for the link. Quote from: Linux711 on August 04, 2011, 08:57:21 AM

Maybe... but if u put data on a flash drive and plug it in two years later you still want it to be there...

Another thing, with CAM how does it choose what to " retian " or does it keep it all ? Problems SOLVED by clearing RAM by power-cycling may not be fixed with CAM instead of RAM. Quote from: immental1200 on August 05, 2011, 04:32:48 PM

Aside from the fact that any machine designed to use it in the same manner as DRAM will be designed to either clear it on startup or at the very least there will be a method of clearing it, much akin to the ability to open CD drives with a paper clip and "reset" phones and MP3 players.

Solve : June: 83 % mo' Phish!?

Answer» Spam in June: Phishing Attacks on FACEBOOK and Habbo Intensify
Business News:
Kaspersky Lab presents its spam report for June 2011.
Quote
The volume of spam in mail traffic increased slightly compared to May and averaged 83.3%. The most popular TOPICS were Osama bin Laden’s death, the last Harry Potter movie the anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death.
New phishing targets

The amount of phishing emails remained unchanged and accounted for 0.02% of all mail traffic. However, there was a considerable increase in the amount of phishing attacks on social networks Habbo and Facebook, increasing by 6.25 and 4.07 percentage points respectively, pushing the sites up to third and fourth places in the list of organizations attacked most. The experts at Kaspersky Lab also predict a surge in spam linked to Google+ after recent signs that spammers have begun exploiting the growing interest in the new social NETWORK.

It is not clear what ht 83% is., Maybe a typo.

Seems quite clear to me. From what you quoted: "The volume of spam in mail traffic increased slightly compared to May and averaged 83.3%"

It means that in May, spam email traffic was to all email traffic as 83.3 is to 100. Expressing the relation of a part to the whole in this way is called giving it as a "percentage", from the Latin per centum. It is a convenient method of expressing a fraction in a quickly (I thought) understandable way. The formula is (part/whole) x 100. That symbol like a slash with two little circles is called a "percent" sign or symbol.

If s is spam traffic and m is all mail traffic (s/m) times 100 = 83.3.

The figure seems to be in the right ballpark:

Quote
For some time now, spam has been accounting for upwards of 90 percent of all email messages.

(Threat Weekly, Kapersky Feb 2010)

Quote
With a share of 96.4 percent of the total email volume, however, spam remains at record levels. The top spam originators in July 2010 were the US, followed by Brazil and India. Germany dropped to seventh place.

(Web Host Industry Review, August 2010)

Quote
Spam – 72.9% in June (a decrease of 2.9 percentage points since May 2011

(Symantec Intelligence Report: June 2011)

...in fact it seems to have gone down a bit over the last year or so, but I guess concluding that depends on using comparable measurements.

Thank you for the explanation. I miss-understood.

So then, for every 10 n Emails that are sent to me, that majority, about 8 out of ten, will be some kind of unsolicited mail that is that is trying to get me to into something that I don't really want. That's a lot.

But does that not put a burden on the internet traffic system?

The portion of all email traffic between servers world wide added together which is spam is reckoned to be around 80 per cent but most of it is filtered out before it reaches your inbox by various methods which I would find too laborious to describe here. How much of your own email, whether you mean all that is sent, or what you actually end up with, is spam is impossible to say.

So who pays for this? It must cost something to have unwanted traffic on the system. Right? And there is nothing we can do  - Right?

I guess the servers have to be bigger and more numerous than they would otherwise need to be, and more bandwidth need be provided than would otherwise be needed, or rather, increases in these things, necessary because of total internet traffic increases, are used up more quickly than forecast. It's hard to put a price on it although I daresay some people will try, and sellers of anti-spam solutions will probably make it seem bigger.

In January 2009 Ferris Research said...

Quote
Worldwide, spam will cost us all $130 billion; in the U.S. alone, $42 billion. That’s a 30% increase over our 2007 estimates, which themselves were a 100% increase over our 2005 figures.

and

Quote
The contribution of each cost component to the total is roughly:

User productivity cost (deleting spam, looking for false positives, etc.): 85%

Help DESK cost (IT helping end users deal with spam): 10%

Spam control software/hardware/service (licensing fees, amortized capital costs, etc.): 5%

It depends how much you believe that when people are not coping with spam they are doing productive work, and how these things are measured...

The people/companies sending spam PAY for the ability to do so. It's not like they can just plug in a phone line and start sending out millions of e-mails.

It's nice to see that they aren't just picking on Microsoft. Google has been getting a free PASS on a lot more stuff than Microsoft did for the longest time, and I think it all boils down to it's stupid slogan. This has less to do with Google's prevalence as a web search engine and more to do with it's "tendrils" reaching out and guiding users towards it.

FIREFOX defaults to using google. This is not because it's most popular- it's because Google sponsored mozilla.

So, if MS defaults to Bing and so forth for searching, they get flak, but it's alright for Google to pay Mozilla to do the same thing with Firefox? And I don't even think chrome even gives you an option, it just sends you straight to google as your home page.

A lot of people use google. But, it is no longer the "best" search engine. Sometimes google searches turn up squat, so I break down and use bing and find something right away; sometimes it's the other way around. I don't feel it has the lead in search ability as much as it originally did, and the fact is very few people use bing, or any search engine other than google, google's dominance in search has to do with them having an early advantage and becoming so popular to the point of becoming a verb that there is absolutely no mind-share left for any other search engine.

Read this again...then consider your observation.Coincidentally today i received notifications for both an Opera update (my default browser) and Avira (free). Did both simultaneously. Now my Avira says i am "Guard=active however the webguard=unknown". Which i believe is NO protection currently exists for web scanning. Also my web pages are displaying differently in that CH for instance is behaving erratically when scrolling a page. Turning the mouse wheel even a little can cause the scroll to go through half or more of the page.My speed dial loads extremely slowly now. The newest version of Opera is 11.50. How much of this is due to Avira and how much to Opera (or the combination) i do not know. I gather from the post above that IF i can eventually get the "webguard" installed i am going to be obliged to accept a another toolbar (Ask) which i have always declined from other sources in the past. It looks like Avast may be in the offing soon for this computer.truenorth Quote

Just got this similar problem on my Win 7 system. The umbrella icon shows(fold) Avira Personal guard is off but under Control center and notification, the guard is active. Under Task manager, avgnt.exe is visible. Have removed internet connection for the meantime as to look for possibly reinstalling Avira again and see what comes up then. Did full scan with MBAM, no threats or infections. Checked on Windows defender and is disabled. jason, What you may find is the FOLLOWING. After a complete shutdown of the computer on the next start (this one) a box pops up in the lower right of the screen offering an enhancement to your browsing experience with Avira. If you accept it goes through a process uf installing the components for "Webguard" . Then your umbrella will open with all components active. As to the "Ask" toolbar in Opera 11.50 it is available (along with 16 others) in a drop down menu (but not visible otherwise). My scroll in Opera is as stated now on steroids. But i suspect that is not Avira related. So i GUESS i will stick with Avira for now. truenorthI was really waiting for some issues regarding the Avira/Ask toolbar effect. I was hesitant to install and took a pause for any findings presently. It seems you are running some trouble(?) on your Opera browser. Jason, Don't know your browser so the effect of the Avira "webguard" installation could be different on the "Ask" toolbar. But no issues with Opera re that. My default is Google and it is still displayed as previous and is NOT in the drop down as is Ask. Prior to the update (today) with the Opera upgrade a small rotation of the mouse wheel would move me up say one item on a CH forum view. Now it will go at least 3 -4 on the slightest wheel rotation. Somewhat annoying as i generally overshoot where i want to go to. I may have to see about a slow down on the scroll wheel function if i cannot adjust to this new phenomenon.truenorth Quote from: truenorth on June 29, 2011, 11:22:19 AM

truenorth, does that happen regardless of what website you're viewing?  Since web pages vary in length and, therefore, the length of the slider on the SCROLLBAR varies, do you see any difference in the scroll speed when viewing pages of different lengths?

Edit to correct wording in first sentence.soybean, It is a bit early to determine the scroll relevance to other web sites. However on the ones i have visited since the 2 updates it seems to occur on all of them all.truenorth
P.S. If memory serves me correctly i believe you also use Opera. Have you done the update to 11.50? Do you notice a similar phenomenon?Indeed, I am using Opera but I'm still using version 11.11.  I'll submit another post here when I make the update to version 11.50.

I can tell you my Opera scrolls more aggressively than Firefox (3.6.17).   In other words, for a given web page, I need to turn my mouse wheel more with Firefox than with Opera to scroll the page the same distance.  Quote
Jason, Don't know your browser so the effect of the Avira "webguard" installation could be different on the "Ask" toolbar

AT&T to buy T-Mobile USA for $39 billion (AP)
Quote

AP - AT&T Inc. said Sunday it will buy T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom AG in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $39 billion that would make it the largest cellphone company in the U.S.
sources:
AP, CNN, CBS, NY Times
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2011-03-20-att-deal_N.htmI can't say this is good news; it could be a negative event for consumers.  From the article:

"Consumer advocates, though, urged federal antitrust officials to block the deal. They warn that AT&T and Verizon could create a wireless duopoly, resulting in higher prices and fewer choices for customers." Quote

Just returned from an extended stay in the U.S. and i was amused to see the tv adds still running depicting T-Mobile touting their service over A.T.&T. This takeover had been declared (but not yet APPROVED) before i ever got there.truenorthThe AT&t takeover of T-Mobile is not a done deal by any means and I think T-Mobile is operating on the assumption that the deal will be blocked on anti-trust grounds.  Either that or they know they are going to lose their jobs anyway if the merger goes through.I think it should be blocked, but I can't remember the last time the FCC blocked a telecomm merger...And to think that there was a time when AT&T was deemed too big and ordered to breakup. Can we be HEADED that way again? truenorthI am not going to say "History repeats itself."
Oops, I just did.  The sale will go thru... Quote from: patio on April 24, 2011, 08:18:38 PM
The sale will go thru...

It probably will.

When AT&T was broken up if you wanted a telephone in North America you almost always had to deal with an AT&T company.  There were other smaller phone companies like General and Continental, and a hundred very little ma and pa companies serving small towns, but all them combined were a fraction of AT&T's size.  Almost all long distance traffic was carried over AT&T long lines, even to companies like General.

Now in most major markets you have a choice of at least two land line companies, generally with a cable company being the second, and all kinds of cell phone companies.  The conditions that caused the AT&T break up are very different now. After I posted this I got to thinking about the statement about telephone service in North America, and I should have qualified that a bit.  Mexico has always required that any telecommunications company, telephone, TV or cable be 100% Mexican owned, so AT&T never had any ownership interest in phone service in Mexico.Recent article says it is good for some rural areas in USA

AT&T to buy T-Mobile

Could mean rural broadband access for Mississippi
By JB Clark
News Reporter
Published: Friday, June 17, 2011 11:09 AM CDT
The latest talk in telecommunications centers around the purchase of T-Mobile USA by AT&T, a merger that could mean STATEWIDE mobile broadband access for Mississippians.

The purchase of T-Mobile USA is a result of a looming spectrum crunch in which mobile broadband USE in America exceeds the capacity of mobile broadband providers' networks.

The spectrum is the range of airwave frequencies that enable everything from broadcast television to cell phones and mobile broadband.

Since the introduction of the smart phone, AT&T's mobile data use grew by 8,000 percent and it is expected to be eight times higher by 2015.

*
"What if traffic on I-55 went up 8,000 percent?" Mayo Flynt, AT&T Mississippi president, asked. "How would the transportation department deal with that. That's what we're trying to do right now."

The Federal Communications Commission expects that crunch to happen by 2013.

AT&T has a plan to provide 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) to 80 percent of Mississippi and with the increased amount of spectrum provided by the T-Mobile merger, the company is now planning to provide the mobile broadband access to 97 percent of the state.

Solve : Opera 11.10 Gets Better Turbo and Speed Dial?

Answer» Opera 11.10 GETS Better Turbo and Speed Dial.  I found the video at the lower part of the article entertaining.

I just installed this update to Opera, so really haven't given it much of a TEST drive.  But, my immediate impression: it's fast.  I also like the changes to the Speed Dial page.

A brief summary of changes: http://www.opera.com/portal/upgrade/Opera Turbo is brilliant, I'm using it at the moment because Ive been transferred to 1mb/s connection and the Turbo really does work. One downside though - It does this through compression of the images and content on the site, it also runs them through its servers. This can mean you get logged out of certain sites like facebook, gmail, etc. I run with it turned off whenever I use facebook. One nice feature would be so you could have it enabled on some pages, and not some others. Because at the moment its EITHER on for everything or off for everything. I have also noticed that the auto mode isn't very quick to pick up when it needs to be turned on.I am using the latest Opera version and i particularly like the improvements to the speed dial. If I'm not mistaken the speed dial  entry selections are now unlimited. However the more you have the smaller they BECOME--so eventually a magnifying glass may become necessary to view them. By the way soybean i notice your reference to version "11.10" the latest is actually 11.11 truenorthIn other words...it's not actually faster...

Solve : Microsoft buys Skype for $8.5 billion?

Yep, they did.  Get the full scoop at http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2011/05/microsoft-buys-skype-for-85-billion-.htmlLuckily I don't use Skype, so I don't have to worry about what HORRIFYING things Microsoft are going to do with it :]How much of that 8.5 Billion is needed for salary, benefits, and pensions?
Would any of that go to outstanding corporate debts as well?

I don't KNOW much about accounting or business.Since MS owns Skype now they assume all debts and obligations that Skype had.  I'd be surprised if Skype had any pension plans.  I know all about iron workers pension plans and that's just not common in internet companies.  They want stock options more than pension plans.

I've read several articles about MSs plans for Skype and a common theme in the articles was MS bought it so Google couldn't have it. Quote from: rthompson80819 on May 27, 2011, 04:43:21 PM

That's a strange way to do business, there must be something else....MS wants to integrate Skype into Windows live messinger which makes sense.  Skype already has a customer base for voice service.  Overall it makes sense, but I think MS overpaid for it to keep any other company from getting it.this link was in one of my newsletters about a month ago.

Why is Microsoft buying Skype.A spammer recently posted the question, who was the previous owner of Skype, which was an interesting question, but it was definitely spam.

Skype's history from Wikipedia.

Nope. Purchase is still up for review. MS doesn't own Skype just yet.

Needless to say, FOSS advocates all over the net are all over this latest bit of issues, claiming that "skype had 100% uptime before MS purchased it!" despite the fact that skype didn't have 100% uptime nor has the deal been finalized- MS has no CONTROL over skype yet, they couldn't shut it down if they wanted to, and even if they could, why would they? Wouldn't that kind of defeat the purpose of purchasing a company for 8.5 billion dollars? No doubt they plan to somehow integrate skype- or skype tech- into Live messenger, X-Box kinect, Windows Phone 7.

There are also claims that MS will make the Linux port crap.

Well, here's some news- the Linux port is ALREADY crap. The contract TERMS are pretty clear that MS has to "continue to respect the multi-platform nature of skype" which basically translates to "Make sure the iPhone/iPod/iPad/Android port are top notch and let the linux port continue to blow goats". There is a very good reason for that but that would be ancillary to the TOPIC at hand.

Solve : Feds Should OK HDD Mergers?

Storage Bytes
Why Government Regulators Should Approve Hard Disk Drive Company Consolidation
May. 31 2011 - 3:33 pm | 857 views
By TOM COUGHLIN

The author makes a case why upcoming HDD company mergers are important to maintain the health of the HDD companies that remain as well as to continue to deliver the enormous value that HDDs have given their customers.  Furthermore, HDDs face intense competition from solid state storage devices and new investments in R&D and capital equipment will be needed to maintain the cost per byte advantage of HDDs and thus ensure their continued unit shipment and storage capacity growth.  More stable and even somewhat higher HDD prices, resulting from the Western Digital/Hitachi GST and Seagate/Samsung mergers will assist in this technology transition and enable even greater storage values for customers in years to come.....

Full Story...In my opinion this following statement is at best presumptuous and lacks evidence ."Fewer companies in this industry will RESULT in better CONTROL over their inventory and lessened market uncertainty and competition will allow the remaining three HDD companies to be able to make the technology and capital investments that this industry requires." In most cases (and i see no reason to suspect this is any different) competition is a product motivator in all its parts.Price/quality/innovation/etc. Less competition can result in the opposite of the improvements that competition brings. When the state of monopoly arrives then the worst of the absence of competition arises. I think the declining sales of traditional HDD are ATTRIBUTABLE to many factors. Such as the availability of alternatives IE: portable usb flash drives/increased storage capacity of bigger and bigger HDDs/ new technologies/etc. Had i any influence with the parties who will ultimately ponder on this i would advise the opposite of the quoted author. truenorthThe only businesses that are ever threatened by improved technologies are those that need to be left BEHIND. Sorry if that was not clear. Linux users complain that they can not use SilverLight because it is tied to Windows. So Ubuntu users have to make a VM Box and put XP in it just to watch Netflix while inside Ubuntu. Some  Linux users refuse to reboot and work inside of Windows.
Netflix is going after the mobile market. The image quality on mobile device is lower and the bandwidth is often higher. So a high performance native code thing like SilverLight is not needed. Apparently.
The Android system works on phones and tablets. So far the Netflix does not yet do tablets, but does some things like Xbox and Wii.  Now if Netflix were to build a portable player that works as well as SilverLight, they just might drop Silverlight so that they wold have one player that would adapt to any platform. But that is the question. Would they want to do that?  Am I barking at the wrong tree? Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 16, 2011, 07:41:36 PM

More precisely, it's not POSSIBLE. I mean, it possible, but it's not feasible, simply because an Android device could use any number of instruction sets. On the other hand, whether the result is in a sort of "native code" or not is irrelevant since SilverLight isn't; It's Managed code.

Silverlight isn't a "Player" it's what Netflix is currently using for their player; that is, Silverlight is no more a Video Player then, say, OpenGL or Direct3D are to a 3-D game.Application jealousy is something that everyone suffers from at some point or another.

well, the thing is, they have been storing that type of stuff for years anyway, not sure why everything changes because it stores some of the information on a computer.  The only circumstances where I can think that somebody having access to where your phone has been might be bad are all rather contrived, so it seems more like it's "much ado about nothing" really. +1I agree with Allan and BC, that's it's much ado about nothing.

My guess, and it's just a guess, is that when Apple decided to do GPS they used some piece of hardware or software that was made for stand alone GPS units, rather than try to reinvent the wheel.  All stand alone GPS units track where you have been so when you are lost in the woods, you can find your way home again. Went back and read the article. FOUND some side-splitters:

Quote
privacy-conscious smartphone users
HAHAHA... Now  there's an oxymoron. Of course, when somebody is "privacy-conscious" it just means they are "paranoid out of their skull".

See, apparently the fact that this data is digital somehow ups the ante. But really, there are plenty of other low-tech and other high-tech ways to learn about people, but if you are concerned about any of them, then you should either have a *censored* good reason to be, or you are simply a paranoid delusional. A good reason, by the way, would be if a shadowy figure in a large purple hat is everywhere you go, stalking your every move. Watching you eat your meatloaf from the bushes across the street, and  when you get suspicious and look all you see is the menacing glitter on the oversized purple stovepipe hat. And the rain of newspapers as the paperboy trips over mr purple-hat's oversized shoes, he get's a deep cut and needs to use your phone... but HARK! the paperboy was nothing more then an accomplice for Mr.Purplehat's evil stalking plan! he IGNORED your home insurance POLICY. he went right past your house title deed and social T4 General Tax returns that you were like just about to send in the next day- he went straight for your iphone.

He knows how to strike where it hurts! Now he can see everywhere your phone has been in the last year! Of course if you aren't a kinky weirdo, I'm not sure how tracking information could really be something all that "private".

Some have stated that, say, burglars could identify when you are or are not home, and a pattern of your movements.

But they could find out whether you were or weren't home by looking at your house. Being able to take the data from a stolen or lost iphone in this manner will tell them where you live, but that's pretty much it.

Also, some have stated, or implied that this is some sort of on-purpose thing done by Apple; Why? What the *censored* would that information do for them? I'm sure they could do something with it, but one should never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity, or, in this case, simple mistakes.

Recieved this in an e-mail this AM....
I noticed the live links in the body were red flagged by WOT.

After further digging i found out it is a phishing scam to retrieve data....

DO NOT clik the links  and get rid of the message from your Inbox....

Pass this along.
Thanx
patio,
Thanks for the heads up!Good catch.  Thanks! Thanks. Everybody should have WOT.
http://www.mywot.com/en/downloadPHISHERS have California confused with Canada.  There is a Canadian office, but Adobe is headquartered in California.I only ever run a PROGRAM update from within the program, I figure it's safer that way.

Thanks for the info though MAN, will definitely alert my friends.Adobe itself is constantly (seems almost daily) coming out with updates for either flash player and/or reader. Now we have phishers getting into the act. truenorth

Solve : Avast False Positive Issue with Virus Defs 110411-1 (April 11 2011)?

Answer» From the avast! Blog

Quote
Virus definition UPDATE 110411-1 contained an error that resulted in a  good number of innocent sites being flagged as infected. Generally, all  sites with a script in a specific format were affected.
Our virus lab staff discovered the PROBLEM quickly after releasing  the bogus update and immediately started working on a fix. The fix was  released about 45 minutes after the problematic update and has version  number 110411-2. Anyone who still has this problem is kindly asked to  manually update the definitions to the latest version, e.g. by  right-clicking the avast taskbar icon (the orange (a) BALL), and  selecting Update -> Engine and Virus Definitions.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. As this typically only  affected REMOTE sites (and not local files), simply updating to the  latest definitions should completely solve the issue (no local files  have been quarantined).

For those who can't understand computer tech lingo or language, open avast and CLICK "Update Program" under the Maintenance tab to fix the issue.

Solve : Twitter Worm Uses Google URL Shortener to Spread Scareware?

Answer» Twitter Worm Uses Google URL Shortener to Spread Scareware
by RYAN Naraine

Quote
A fast-moving Twitter worm is in circulation, using Google's goo.gl redirection service to push unsuspecting users to a notorious scareware (fake anti-virus) MALWARE campaign.

At 8:45 a.m EST today, this Twitter search shows thousands of Twitter messages continuing to spread the worm.

According to malware hunters tracking the threat, the worm's redirection chain pushes users to a Web page serving up the “Security Shield” Rogue AV. The page is using obfuscation techniques that include an implementation of RSA cryptography in JavaScript to obfuscate the page code.

Kaspersky Lab malware researcher Nicolas Brulez said the original "goo.gl" links in the Twitter messages are redirecting users to DIFFERENT domains with a “m28sx.html” page. That page then redirects to a static domain with a Ukrainian top level address.

As if it was not enough, this domain redirects the user to another IP address which has been linked in the past to fake anti-virus distributions. "This IP address will then do the final redirection job, which leads to the actual Fake AV site," Brulez explained.

Once a user's browser session is redirected to the malicious site, a warning message claims the COMPUTER is running suspicious applications and the user is encouraged to run a scan. As usual, the result is that the machine is infected with malicious threats and the scam is to TRICK the user into downloading a fake disinfection tool.

I'm not so sure, Citigroup operates financial services in 140 COUNTRIES. Barclays is based in the UK and ALSO operates worldwide.  Depends on how and where their email data is stored. It's just a standard phishing scam... the FACT that they managed to acquire information that allowed them to have a more likely bank for their targets doesn't change the fact that those victims shouldn't be FOLLOWING links in e-mails anyway.

Solve : AVAST Software Releases Updated Free Antivirus?

Answer»

Article can be read at http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2380782,00.asp

This is VERSION 6.0.  They've added a new feature called WebRep.  You can elect not to ENABLE it during installation; it can be INSTALLED later if so desired.  The purpose of WebRep is, as I understand it, similar to the website Web of Trust.  Also, on Windows 7 systems, the new version of avast! PUTS a gadget on the desktop.  Of course, this can easily be removed if not wanted. I just manually updated a WIN7 64-bit machine to version 6.0.1000 from version 5.1.889 through the GUI, no apparent problems.

Be advised: this update requires a machine restart. This new version also features a built-in sandbox.

I just noticed that a few minutes ago. Still wonder why it's so much larger. I want to say maybe the smaller ones are web installers. Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 22, 2011, 10:46:28 AM

Yeah, that may be true.  I found this download page from Microsoft, which confirms a 2GB file: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=c3202ce6-4056-4059-8a1b-3a9b77cdfddathe ISO probably is the "offline" type installer; whereas the smaller ones are web installers that will reach out to the web to get some of the hotfixes/updates. This is because the "web" installers are more or less designed for computers that are already running windows 7 and have been running it for a while, since they will likely already have a good portion of the updates the offline ISO has, thanks to windows update. (And if they don't then it reaches out and grabs them)I downloaded from both the site in the link above AND directly from MS - both are 1.9 Gb. The MS is an .img file (just change the name to .iso and burn)

BTW, the one file contains sp's for 32 AND 64 bit OS'sThe smaller versions (the executable installers) are architecture specific (one for x86 and one for x64); the ISO will have both architectures, so that is ~1.8GB.Installation took about 30 minutes on the first desktop SYSTEM. After burning the .iso to dvd, you will run the installer from within the OS. Quote from: michaewlewis on February 22, 2011, 10:29:28 AM

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/default.aspx

I just re-read the title of this thread and noticed that it says windows 7 and thought how off topic my post must seem. But SP1 was also released for server 08 r2 today. I've been following that release more than the win7 release. The SP1 download file at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=c3202ce6-4056-4059-8a1b-3a9b77cdfdda#Overview is for both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008.  Perhaps that's a factor is it being such large file. It has appeared in Windows Updates. I am going to do an image backup and then wait a day or two to see if there are going to be anything that will impact my current set up. I have memories of XP Service Packs 1 2 & 3.
