Solve : Microsoft puts out Police Link on messenger *? |
Answer» PREMISE > "wonderful" Reality > big-brother/destroyed lives / opening up can of woop-a your thoughts? http://technology.guardian.co.uk/news/story/0,,1855921,00.html Quote This is a landmark step by Microsoft. They could have got £20,000 in ad revenue for the space they have given up to ensure a higher level of user safety and we hope others will follow them. What rot. £20k worth of advertising revenue to a COMPANY that earns more than that every 20 seconds? Yes, that's right folks, by the time you finish reading this rant, generous-hearted ol' MS will already have recouped its losses from passing up this wonderful opportunity to advertise... It's mere coincidence that they get lots of good (and free) publicity from this manoeuvere. Of course, no one will use this new "report a paedophile" button to falsely CLAIM that all their friends are dodgy... Pointless. But I hope some good comes of it!Bill Gates " see we are doing something good. We are PROTECTING the younth and future windows users.." thats funny how they praise MS for the "huge" money lose, but like ROB said by the time that was written they made that money back plus some.. |

Solve : Finally !! "fun" news in a crappy world* #1 PC's? |
Answer» Hope this article is fun for you to read, Have a great day! A good representation, and I remember virtually all of them. Suspiciously missing was the Dell Optiplex GX1, a cornerstone of business around the world for years and still very functional and relevant, a claim some of those do not have! Hey G-MAN, could you not sense the anger from all the perceived OMISSIONS from "their" list. I do remember the Atari 600 << that was a huge seller! There sure were a lot of apples in the list*. The Commodore 64. NOT in the Top 25 ? Puh-leeze. I screwed up above! I really MEANT to say the 64, YOUR RIGHT* everyone & their brother interested at the time bought that puter. Here is a good read for Apple enthusiasts: http://www.geeks.com/techtips/2006/techtips-10aug06.htmCould the AMIGA be considered a personal computer?Yes.THEN WHY ISN'T IT IN THE LIST.There were a LOT of models not in the top 25 on that list. No harm, no foul. Quote There were a LOT of models not in the top 25 on that list. No harm, no foul. Including the Commodore 64!!! (Oops, I mentioned that already, didn't I?) Where is the BBC Micro? The IMSAI? The Spectrum/Timex? the Compaq 286? That list is biased. And so am I. Quote That list is biased. And so am I. At least you're honest about it. i learned something today thats cool |

Solve : it's Official: Dell goes with AMD? |
Answer» This is a couple days old, sorry.... I found the comment section on the bottom to be kinda educational- "for me only I guess" hope its pertinent* Do the AMD's run a lot hotter ?I don't know if this holds true with the latest processors from AMD, but at least some of the major series of AMD processors such as Athlons and Athlon XPs supposedly ran hotter. However, I think it's really not a big issue to most users; actually, I would say it's generally a non-issue. Now, if you build systems using AMD processors, you had to be sure to properly apply thermal compound to the processor before mounting the heatsink, and be absolutely sure the fan is working when you first power on because AMD processors could quickly overheat and be damaged. Intel processors, on the other hand, would just throttle back and run slower if getting too hot. So, as a practical matter, a properly installed AMD processor presents no heat concerns to the user. I bought a computer in Sept 2002 with an AMD Duron processor. I later replaced the motherboard and replaced the processor with an AMD Athlon XP 2200, which I'm currently using. I can tell from temperature readings that my processor runs fairly cool, ususally not higher than 45 degrees Centigrade, and often lower. Also, a 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon can run as fast as a 3.0 GHz Intel, if not better. Quote Also, a 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon can run as fast as a 3.0 GHz Intel, if not better. really?? may i ask for some evidence to support that claim?I'm curious about that claim, too. The Athlon XP 2200 has a clock speed of 1.8GHz. I believe the general rule in comparing AMD processors to Intel is that the number, such as 2200, indicates an approximate equivalency to Intel ACTUAL clock speeds. In other words, an Athlon XP 2200 is about equal to a 2.2GHz Pentium. I don't usually quote Wikipedia, but you guys seem to trust it, so: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PR_ratingInteresting article there. And, here's a web page which confirms what I was saying about my Athlon XP 2200: AMD Desktop CPUs. Here's an excerpt: "So is the 2200 + (Thoroughbred Revision A) faster than the newest Pentium 4s? No it isn't. AMD benchmarks the 2200 against Intel's Pentium 4 at 2.2 GHz that has a 400 MHz bus and uses DDR RAM. It performs 4-10 % better than the Intel Pentium 4 2.2 GHz. However, it is doubtful that this difference would exist if RDRAM was used with the Pentium 4. For all practical purposes the AMD Athlon XP 2200+ should be considered to be evenly matched with the Pentium 4 2.2 GHz."i still like amd for gamingDon't forget the Athlon 2200 is probably much cheaper than Pentium 2.2GHztrue Quote <snip>Do the AMD's run a lot hotter ?<snip> Actually...no, they don't. AMD chip do more clocks per cycle (this MEANS they do more work with less power). Because of this they require less raw power to do the same amount of work (when comparing to an Intel chip). Because these chips require less power they do not produce the same amount of heat (again, when comparin to Intel chips), they produce less. This is one of the main reasons why people that overclock like using AMD's, because they can get them higher while still being at a safe temperature. My $0.02...if any of this is wrong please correct me. |

Solve : Hacks Vista With Rootkit Technology? |
Answer» Black Hat Attendee Hacks Vista With Rootkit Technology Black Hat Attendee Hacks Vista With Rootkit Technology Panting slowly, "I wonder if she is single" ? More yellow.... :-/ patio. 8-)Do these people have lives?!?! I mean come on, they have a meeting to find new ways of hacking into things, GET A LIFE LOSERS! Can someone please explain to me why they do this?! Also what kind of kicks do they get out of screwing over other peoples machines?!?! ChrisActually I would think the hackers provide a service to the software publishers as to where the weaknesses are in their software. In a perfect world, the publishers would use this information to tighten up their code to everyone's benefit. On the other hand not everything is what it appears. Check out Blue Pill for another opinion. 8-)Yes but if there wernt any hackers then there wouldnt be any NEED to tighten up security would there?! Chris Quote Do these people have lives?!?! I mean come on, they have a meeting to find new ways of hacking into things, GET A LIFE LOSERS! Can someone please explain to me why they do this?! Also what kind of kicks do they get out of screwing over other peoples machines?!?!This person attended the BlackHat meeting that night for a reason; to bring forth the issue, and help solve it. The Black Hat convention prevents stuff like this. They are the top security specialists.Oh right, then they are doing this for good?!?! I thought they were just a bunch of nerds who got together to try and hack into things. Ok ill rephrase my question. Why do OTHER hackers do it, you know the ones that design viruses and stuff. Why do they bother?! Chris Quote Oh right, then they are doing this for good?!?! I thought they were just a bunch of nerds who got together to try and hack into things. Ok ill rephrase my question. Why do OTHER hackers do it, you know the ones that design viruses and stuff. Why do they bother?!Many simply to make money! (what happened to my avatar?) Anyways: Yes, to make money. Many viruses take PERSONAL information, eg: credit card numbers, bank accounts, etc... This can be used for fraud to make some doe. And many do it to show they can. Some do it for fun. The fact that there are less nerdier ways of enjoying yourself, but if thats how some people enjoy themselves then fine. Is it a PRACTICALY risk free way of earning money. I.E is there much chance your going to get caught?! But the kind of people im talking about are the ones who like you say do it for fun and/or to show they can, some people may get kicks out of it and that is their desicion but personaly i think its pretty sad! Thanks for reply tho! Chrisi am sorry to say that with prices of software soaring, piracy is also going to soar. with piracy soaring, companies are going to have to hire security specialist. heres the math... companies hiring security specialists = company spending more money = prices of their software goes up = piracy goes up = companies hiring security specialists.......... it a visious circle. we have software piracy to thank for our high software costs. i believe we are going to see many more software security companies emerge in the near future. Quote i am sorry to say that with prices of software soaring, piracy is also going to soar. with piracy soaring, companies are going to have to hire security specialist. heres the math...Year 2029 Microsoft Windows 29 Price: 100,000 for one home license And has to be activated by their orbiting satellite. Whenever I'm on my computer I wear my foil hat, you just can't be too careful.rofl yeah i do the same. and when i lan with all my mates we all wear our foil hats together. its a really attractive look actually. |

Solve : USER: MAC vs. PC DEbate? |
Answer» "What drives the purchase of an Apple machine isn't the OS itself -- it's the packaging, the cabinet design, the quality of the graphics. I don't question that Mac OS is an easier operating system, but I don't think that alone drives Apple's sales anymore. A Mac is almost an appliance like a home entertainment center or a big-screen TV," said Charles Tatum II. Mac guy: Name one thing your PC can do that my Macintosh can't! Just one! ROFLMAO! YES, i know the feeling. i have to use macs in my computer graphics class i am in, they are powerfull (even for 700mhz with 512 ram, it IS very powerfull). but power is ALL they have. they have few programs to utilize it... although, i would buy an old mac just to have the audio editing program Garageband, and for photoediting, basic crap that i can free my windows PC of. but, there is NO WAYi would switch entirely from windows to mac. Right. Just like the fact that I like what I have seen of Linux so far, but I'm unwilling to sacrafice my games to remove WinXP. My Macintosh fails to open music, open photos in a good photo-viewer, run my games, run any good Mac type games, did I say OPEN MUSIC?!?!!? I had to download Microsoft's Windows Media Player and even when I did that, my Mac would not associate .mp3 with it. Its just like "I don't understand this file " They do right click, but you have to press CTRL+TheOneMouseButton to do it. Its useless. And all the stupid commands. You kno... I'm disturbing the animals.... They removed the right click because they thought it was too complicated for the average Joe... and of course CRTL + left click is less complicated! PC guy: Name one thing an Acorn can do that a PC can't. Just one. Acorn guy: Middle click!btw the "ctrl click" contextual menus were introduced with Mac OS 8.0 Quote btw the "ctrl click" contextual menus were introduced with Mac OS 8.0My first Mac from my Bro had OS 8.1... so how would older macs right click? TIM! (Not you Dilbert. I am just thinking of people that JKPJ13's avatar looks like) SEAN! His Brother!dude looks like he could be related to harry potter... EDIT: i know somthing a mac cannot currently do, read or write blu-ray discs, owned. Quote They removed the right click because they thought it was too complicated for the average Joe... and of course CRTL + left click is less complicated! Um... Neil? I can middle-click. Maybe it has limited functionality, but I can, as well as anyone with a wheel on their mouse. Quote QuoteThats called the "Scroll Wheel"... older mouses did actually have three buttons, but the middle button was not a scroll wheel. The middle button was for other tasks, and it was compatible with Windows PC's.They removed the right click because they thought it was too complicated for the average Joe... and of course CRTL + left click is less complicated! BTW: Anyone seen Apples new lieing commercial? http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/ A magnetic power cord is only going to cause problems, and possible damage to the user and their computer! MICROSOFT: BUY THE APPLE COMPANY WITH YOUR SOME-ODD 80 BILLION DOLLARS AND BURN IT TO THE GROUND!!! I generated each of my clients (and mine) disks the same way, c: for the OS, d: for their local data, and e: for software. They already have a SCRIPT that backs up the full system on Thursdays and does an INCREMENTAL backup on the other weekdays. The script also sends me a email detailing the success or failure of the backup. It should be easy enough to create a standalone backup of the local data disk on Thursdays and send the file off to Gmail. The backups run unattended at night using the task scheduler, so the extra time factor should not be a problem as everyone has a cable connection. Famous last words: this shouldn't be too hard to implement Thanks, honvetops Edit: my mistake, unlovedwarrior was the OPI still use Ye-Old MS-DOS 6.22 MSBACKUP command on my laptop! And a program that COPIES my files in time intervals on my 98' desktop.whats WRONG with buying 2 SATA drives and making a RAID array? does the same thing and you dont have to buy any software . Quote whats wrong with buying 2 SATA drives and making a RAID array? does the same thing and you dont have to buy any software .Well, that would work until one disk was damaged. Data damage will spread, but disk damage will be limited. It would work fine as long as you ran Scandisk and Defragmenter frequently.if one disk was damaged you would still have the other disk. that is the sole purpose of a RAID 1 array. Quote if one disk was damaged you would still have the other disk. that is the sole purpose of a RAID 1 array. You mean it copies each individual disk WRITE to both drives?that is correct. one hard drive mirrors the other. the RAID array you were thinking of is a RAID 0 array. the RAID 0 array "splits" the information among the 2 drives, thereby increasing the performance of the harddrives reading/writing speeds. Quote that is correct. one hard drive mirrors the other. the RAID array you were thinking of is a RAID 0 array. the RAID 0 array "splits" the information among the 2 drives, thereby increasing the performance of the harddrives reading/writing speeds.Interesting. What does the drive do when it gets an error? Does it self correct as well?I was under the impression the article concerned itself with offsite backup copies. Having duplicate data (RAID array) or a backup inches from the PC would not make you very safe from a fire or a broken water pipe. Mailing the data to a remote server or storing your backup with a friend would increase your odds of a complete recovery. Just an opinion. 8-) |

"surf the WEB and cook supper at the same time with the mac book pro!" Older laptops had these little paws that you could flap out so the laptop wouldn't touch the surface it was standing on. Solve : Microsoft Taking Security Risks (With Vista)? |
Answer» Microsoft 'taking security risks' Microsoft is taking security risks with its forthcoming Vista operating system, says software firm McAfee. The security specialist has taken out a full-page advert in the Financial Times to alert readers to its concerns. It feels the tech giant is increasing risks of hacks and viruses by locking out third-party software firms from its in-built security system for Vista. The row also involves the European Union, which is watching Vista's release for signs of monopoly abuse. "With its upcoming Vista operating system, Microsoft is embracing the flawed logic that computers will be more secure if it stops co-operating with the independent security firms," wrote George Samenuk, McAfee's chairman and chief executive in the advert. 'Preventing releases' McAfee says Microsoft is stopping security firms from accessing the core of the operating system, called the kernel, and is therefore preventing them from releasing third-party security add-ons. If Microsoft wants to make Vista more secure, it should provide equal access to the platform Symantec weblog Attacks on the kernel of an operating system - such as malicious drivers for peripherals and rootkit hacks - have become commonplace among users of Microsoft's Windows XP. Microsoft is locking security firms - and other software developers - out of the core in an effort to prevent kernel attacks on Vista. "Microsoft seems to envision a world in which one giant company not only controls the systems that drive most computers around the world but also the security that protects those computers from viruses and other online threats," the advert SAID. "Only one approach protecting us all: when it fails, it fails for 97% of the world's desktops." 'Constructive dialogue' A Microsoft spokesman said: "Our goal is to deliver a fully innovative, secure version of Windows Vista that is compliant with EU law. We have an ongoing and constructive dialogue with the European Commission on these issues." The European Commission is involved in the debate after it fined Microsoft 497m euros (£335m) in 2004 for anti-competitive behaviour. Security firms such as McAfee and Symantec believe Microsoft's actions around security for Vista amounts to a similar anti-competitive stance. Last month the European Union competition commissioner, Neelie Kroes, accused Microsoft of orchestrating a "co-ordinated campaign" to discredit her. McAfee and Symantec have both stated that the core security systems for Vista have already been breached by hackers. "These new technologies, along with Microsoft's unwillingness to make compromises in this area have serious implications for the security industry as a whole," Symantec said on its security weblog. It added: "If Microsoft wants to make Vista more secure, it should provide equal access to the platform that its own developers have to ensure that security vendors can continue to innovate on the platform, and to ensure that consumers and manufacturers can continue to choose the best security solutions for the platform." Quote "Only one approach protecting us all: when it fails, it fails for 97% of the world's desktops." They have a good point there. However it's Mcafee and Norton talking... G-Man and others had it right awhile ago, don't even bother with vista till they work out the FLAWS, 6 months / 1 year ? The latest tech news say don't contemplate one of those puters that say they are vista-upgradable. It will be better to buy a puter with the OS installed then to try it yourself. Too many driver issues with pre-installed (older) hardware- "issues" !! f..y..i...yet another good reason not to trust windowsWell... if third party software is blocked, wouldent viruses be blocked as well? Anyways... McAfee is just whineing... Actually the CRACKS the Hackers used on VISTA will work against ALL OS's running an Intel or AMD x386 Based Processor. So when you here them SLAMMING vista because it was broken in to , remember it was a Hard ware flaw that allowed it. I think Microsoft's Idea to Secure Vista with in house only Code is a Good one. if you goback and read the artical that i think honvetops posted youll see how they cracked it.i wish i was smart enough to make STUFF like that (for my knowlegde not to screw ppl over except a friend or too)someone will just find a way to get past it... Quote someone will just find a way to get past it... Agreed. Some one will find a way...just give it time.Third party software has posed far fewer security risks than MS's OS. Their selection of defaults and their desire to "backdoor" their own software is the major security problem. Third party software usually corrects these issues and MS doesn't like that. MS is dead wrong in this matter. There simply MUST be more than one option when it comes to security. |

Solve : Can You upgrade to Vista ? an experts view? |
Answer» Expert View: Can You Upgrade to Vista? One question I hear a LOT these days is "Can I upgrade to Vista when the time comes?" Joel Santo Domingo - PC Magazine Oct. 2 - One question I hear a lot these days is "Can I upgrade to Vista when the time comes?" Depending on your current setup, you may be able to get your system ready for the brave new world of Vista. Or you may decide that you're better off just getting a new Vista-ready system instead. Here's what you need to consider. Memory Do you have at least 512MB? One gigabyte of system memory is a more comfortable amount, and 2GB is just about perfect for all iterations of Vista, though you may want 4GB to 8GB if you're a hardcore gamer or a multimedia maven. Graphics If you have integrated graphics or a DX9-capable graphics card, it is likely that you can use Vista in its basic form, without all the fancy Aero effects. If your graphics card has at least 256MB of dedicated graphics memory, Aero will work fine for you. Users of PCs with PCIe X16 slots will be able to upgrade to the new DX10 graphics cards when they're available later this year. DX10 will be a Vista-optimized graphics standard. Hard drive While you can install Vista on any machine that has at least 15GB free, you may want to upgrade to at least 250GB if your current system has less than 80GB. You'll need the room if you upgrade to any new Vista-optimized programs. Processor Upgrading a processor is intimidating. If your processor is too slow for Vista (Intel Celeron Via C3, or AMD Sempron processors that are slower than 800 MHz), buy a new PC. Cut and run If your system came with Windows 95, 98, or ME originally, buy a new system—even if you have the wherewithal to upgrade, it will likely be up to only the minimum Vista requirements. If your system came with Windows 2000, it will probably be able to handle the hardware upgrades needed to run Vista Business or Home Basic, but won't run Vista's multimedia offerings. If your Windows XP system's invoice reads 2004 or later, then you should be in good shape for Home Basic and Premium. For those brave souls who plan to upgrade to Vista-ready levels, I salute you. One hint: Wipe your machine's C: drive and install Vista from scratch rather than upgrading from an existing copy of Windows XP. Just remember to back up your data. Solve : Net crime 'big fear' for Britons? |
Answer» A fifth of people fear net crime the most, the report says More Britons fear net crime than they do burglary, a survey suggests. The Get Safe Online study released by the government found 21% of respondents felt most at risk from net crime, while 16% worried most about being burgled. A BBC investigation into net-based attacks on Windows PCs found they could happen as MUCH as every 15 minutes. At least every hour, an unprotected PC set up as a honeypot logged a malicious attack that could render it unusable or make it access other machines. Similar so-called "honeypot" computers have become indispensable to computer SECURITY experts monitoring online crime in recent years. The government's study also found fears of online crime ran so deep some people were being put off using the internet altogether. But Get Safe Online CAMPAIGN boss Tony Neate said people only needed to take simple steps to avoid almost all types of net dangers. The survey was released as the Get Safe Online campaign gets a re-launch and embarks on a national tour that aims to tell people about good web browsing habits. As well as highlighting fears, the survey also indicates the net is becoming an increasingly important part of many Britons' lives. Online shopping Mr Neate, campaign managing director, said 57% of UK households had a internet connection and 69% of those were linked up via broadband. In the first six months of 2006, British shoppers spent more than £13bn online, the survey found, and 52% of Britons questioned did their banking online. But hand-in-hand with this went WORRIES about the dangers greater net use posed, said Mr Neate. He said 18% of those questioned said they would not shop online because they were concerned about becoming a VICTIM of net crime. The survey also found that many people are still not taking basic steps to protect themselves when they use a PC to go online. The survey found 17% of people had no anti-virus software and 22% had no firewall. A further 23% said they had opened an e-mail attachment that came from an unknown source. Mr Neate said the numbers of people visiting the Get Safe Online website and how long they stayed was an indicator the message was starting to get through. Since the October 2005 launch more than 750,000 people had visited the website, he said. He added that people should regard their PC like their car and take similar steps to keep it in good working order and safe from thieves. "It's about crime prevention and awareness," he said. "Take some simple precautions and people are going to be safe." Quote NET CRIME: A GLOBAL PROBLEM Source Quote As well as highlighting fears, the survey also indicates the net is becoming an increasingly important part of many Britons' lives. Quote The survey also found that many people are still not taking basic steps to protect themselves when they use a PC to go online. yep thats true.. or they only have a quarter of the protection but dont keep it updated. |

Solve : Think Vista sounds good?? |
Answer» In Honvetops absence, I posted a few worthy news links: and it implied that you had to be intelligent to own/use a computer. What's wrong with that? If the Internet was full of intelligent people, it'd be a better place! No more bunnyhoppers, no more badly WRITTEN posts! It'd be bliss! YES! LONG LIVE MS-DOS! Quote Microsoft apparently went on upgrading, making more "wizards" that do things for you. However, at the same time, it's difficult to do custom things on the computer to your benefit. It does things for you, so it's hard to find ways to change the way things are done. The Wizards are absolutely shite, especially the ones on Network connection that take you through a lot of steps, but in the end do nothing at all. Quote What's wrong with that? Nothing. I should qualify my statement: It implied that you had to be intelligent to use a computer, so if you did, then it was a symbol of status. (Status of genius or geek/nerd, depending on who you ask. I'll keep my data where i know it's safe...backed up regularly with Acronis and burned to DVD. patio. 8-)I think those kind of solutions are quite trustworthy technology-wise, you shouldn't worry about HDD's failing as the data can be RECOVERED and they probably store the data on multiple HDD's. That same doesn't apply for DVD's, though. Is it possible to recover data from a damaged/broken DVD?Probably not which is why i make duplicates. Stored at another location. Sounds like overkill but i've been down the DISASTER road once and that was enough... patio. 8-) Quote Probably not which is why i make duplicates. You use Acronis True Image, right? Did you pay for that?Yes. I was sold on it the first time i tried it. I believe they had a FREE TRIAL to buy back then and it wasn't even a week when i decided to go for it. One thing i have learned however is to use the tool provided to verify the images. I had a Windows Vista backup that refused to restore properly. No great loss however as that Vista build was wonked anyway and no software in the world would have made it behave properly.... |

Solve : Microsoft's big gamble with free Office? |
Answer» It wasn't the least bit obvious from your previous post. Your post neither explicitly stated or implied that you were TALKING about STUDENT pricing. And, since most students would not be BUYING an Enterprise edition of Office, it's just not sensible to think we should assume you were talking about academic priced software. I know that local college bookstores from several colleges do not sell an Enterprise VERSION; the Professional version is what is normally sold by them. Quote from: soybean on April 13, 2010, 01:07:02 PM
Geez... All he said is that it's not silly to pay for Office when it's ~100$. I take ~100$ to mean approximately $100. Unless you're qualified to buy at academic pricing, you'll have to pay MUCH more, which would be the case for the majority of buyers. That's my point. let me rephrase.... in response to patio he said it's not silly to pay for office when it they can get it for ~100$. |

Quote from: 2x3i5x on April 15, 2010, 10:23:19 PM What about those IE based browsers? Although they're based on IE, I think they got some plus over M$'s original browser.................... Except the browsing is done by Internet Explorer, not by the application. They don't just with Internet Explorer. All of the vulnerabilities that are found in things like ActiveX, or Flash, or any of those, in Internet Explorer will still be present in the applications that use IE. I might also point out that it's hardly difficult to create a browser like that. a few drags and drops and a line or two of code would make a functional, if spartan, browser. Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 15, 2010, 10:36:51 PM All of the vulnerabilities that are found in things like ActiveX, or Flash, or any of those, in Internet Explorer will still be present in the applications that use IE. This is why you must always update Windows even if you don't use IE. Quote from: evilfantasy on April 16, 2010, 08:06:44 AM This is why you must always update Windows even if you don't use IE. Even if you don't use IE, SOMEONE can still hack your computer USING IE so you must update. *Patiently waiting for a Linux fan to pop in with Linux FTW!!! Quote from: evilfantasy on April 16, 2010, 11:35:06 AM *Patiently waiting for a Linux fan to pop in with Linux FTW!!!And Linux doesn't have any problems with people hacking the system through a browser like this. And Linux doesn't force you to have IE installed. Did it just for you, evilfantasy where happened to MacOSX FTW?? Quote from: Cityscape on April 16, 2010, 11:43:20 AM And Linux doesn't have any problems with people hacking the system through a browser like this. And Linux doesn't force you to have IE installed. Linux/Unix does have problems with buffer overflows in C applications being easily exploited... ESPECIALLY printf() calls with a single argument. Also, I think we're getting a little off-center in our view; exploits in Internet Explorer are no more dangerous then exploits in Firefox. Internet Explorer is integrated into the OS but it doesn't give any extra privileges over hacking any other browser- the goal is to simply get a program running on the remote machine, and then they can use any number of elevation techniques 9buffer overflows, for example) to elevate to admin/SYSTEM on windows and root on a Linux system. Once they do that they can scoff etc/pwd and the NTLM hashes and attempt to crack them LOCALLY. I don't know if Linux does something similar but windows has a password cache that stores the login names and hashes of recent logons, regardless of the domain. a Lucky hacker might be able to compromise a machine that has the admin password for a domain controller in that cache. For Linux/Unix a common source of problems for quite a long time (at least for servers) was the sendmail daemon. the basic concept ath the time was simple- send more data then it can handle, (usually in the form of Nop instructions) and then insert a bit of assembly that executes bin/sh. at that point, sendmails buffer overflows, and overwrites the return ADDRESS and it jumps to the asm instructions and executes bin/sh- and the machine is rooted. Similar vulnerabilities exist for almost every program that runs as root; thankfully most of these services are hardened against these attacks but as long as they are being exposed to the rain they will weather, and more holes will be discovered.No. BC is right. Unless you use a browser that prompts for everything and you set it up to be secure, you can still get rooted on Linux; and, there are things far worse than a virus with a rootkit being up there. I've done my share of HTML hacking and have made the browser execute commands- IE- or just overload the system with data- firefox. If it is a java hack, you're screwed. All seems to be under control now. Quote from: kpac on April 16, 2010, 01:57:38 PM They will still work - that's what I'm saying. Almost all Flash-only websites have a HTML version as well. Flash is revolutionising the internet, and that's the way it should be. Computers are getting better at displaying high quality graphics and animation and are well able to keep up with the changing of internet technologies. Solve : Buggy McAfee update slams Windows XP PCs? |
Answer» http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid=8656 MCAFEE's "DAT" file version 5958 is causing widespread problems with Windows XP SP3. The affected systems will enter a reboot loop and LOOSE all network access. We have individual reports of other versions of Windows being affected as well. However, only particular configurations of these versions appear affected. The bad DAT file may infect individual workstations as well as workstations connected to a domain. The use of "ePolicyOrchestrator", which is used to update virus definitions across a network, appears to have lead to a faster spread of the bad DAT file. The ePolicyOrchestrator is used to update "DAT" files throughout enterprises. It can not be used to undo this bad signature because affected system will LOSE network connectivity. The problem is a false positive which identifies a regular Windows binary, "svchost.exe", as "W32/Wecorl.a", a virus. If you are affected, you will see a message like: The file C:WINDOWSsystem32svchost.exe contains the W32/Wecorl.a Virus. Undetermined clean error, OAS denied access and continued. Detected using Scan engine version 5400.1158 DAT version 5958.0000. McAfee released an updated DAT file, and an "EXTRA.DAT" file to fix the problem. An EXTRA.DAT file is a patch to just fix the bad signature. McAfee's support web sites currently respond slowly and are down at times, likely due to the increased load caused by this issue. Several readers reported that this procedure worked to recover: 1 - BOOT the system in "Safe Mode" 2 - copy extra.dat in c:/program files/common files/mcafee/engine 3 - reboot. If you lost "svchost.exe", then you need to copy it back to c:/Windows/system32/svchost.exe while in safe mode. This fix has to be applied locally at the workstation. However, it may be possible to do this remotely if your workstations support Intel's "vPro" technology. We should have a link to instructions shortly. Additional information from McAfee: http://community.mcafee.com/thread/24056?tstart=0 McAfee Knowledgebase Article: https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB68780 EXTRA.DAT file: http://home.mcafee.com/VirusInfo/VirusProfile.aspx?key=265240.Basically same story, different source, and a few different details. http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-technology/20100421/US.TEC.McAfee.Antivirus.Flaw/Fix posted at BleepingComputer: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic311599.htmlAn interesting demonstration of "the cure is sometimes worse then the disease" if I ever saw one.I assume, you're referring to McAfee as a disease That's one of the reasons I have automatic updates turned off in Windows and av programs. I ALWAYS do the updates, but wait a few days to make sure there are no bugs.Well, with AV program it may work to your disadvantage. I think, it's better to keep your AV up to date and keep a fresh image of your drive.Haha. We use McAffe at school. Only some computers worked (the ones turned off before the update) and we rely on our IT for everything (registers being a prime example.) Taking ages to fix, though, bearing in mind we have 1500 PCs running McAfee. |
