Solve : Computer virus accuses victims of viewing child porn?

Answer»

German federal police are warning about a computer virus that accuses victims of viewing "juvenile pornography".

It also displays an image that it claims reveals images of child *censored* abuse have been viewed on a computer.

The Windows virus locks a computer and only returns control to its owner on payment of a 100 euro (£86) fine.

It purports to be collecting cash on behalf of German copyright authorities and the country's national computer security agency.

The virus amounted to "digital extortion" and victims should not pay up, said German police.

The warning about the novel strain of ransomware was issued by Germany's Federal Criminal police office (the BUNDESKRIMINALAMT or BKA).

The ransomware version found by the BKA uses a pop-up window that says the machine has been locked down due to "unauthorised network activity". The window is crafted to look like it has been put TOGETHER by Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BKI) and its society for PROSECUTION of copyright infringement (GVU).
'Emotional blackmail'

Text in the window claims that images of child *censored* abuse as well as pirated content have been found on the machine. Also displayed is an PICTURE of a child which it claims reveals illegal images have been viewed.

Full story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-21291925I'm not sure what worries me more. The malware itself, or the fact that this approach actually works- which is to say, Are the 'victims' thinking "hmm, I don't know how that got there but I better do what it says" or is it "Oh no I've been caught!".

It's the latter that worries me.
One agrees BC. But I also feel some people would feel pressured into admitting guilt when non exists to advocate themselves. Probably many people also will SUSPECT someone else in that household which could also be an ugly result of this extortion...The stigma of being accused of liking child pornography is so great that I am sure many people would pay a smallish sum just to make it go away.

Solve : Web 're-defining' human identity says chief scientist?

Answer»

Social networks such as Facebook and on-line gaming are changing people's view of who they are and their place in the world, ACCORDING to a report for the government's chief scientist.

The report, published by PROF Sir John Beddington, says that traditional ideas of identity will be less meaningful.

One consequence COULD be communities becoming less cohesive.

This change could be harnessed to bring positive changes or if ignored could fuel social exclusion, says the study.

"This can be a positive force, exemplified by the SOLIDARITY seen in the London 2012 Olympics or a destructive force, for example the 2011 riots," says the report.

"Due to the development of smart phones, social networks and the trend towards (greater) connectivity disparate GROUPS can be more easily mobilised where their interests temporarily coincide."

"For example," it says, "a 'flash mob' can be mobilised between people who have not previously met".

The report, entitled "Future Identities," says that near continuous access to the internet, termed "hyper-connectivity", will drive profound changes to society over the next 10 years.

Solve : MAC defenseless?

Answer»

MacBook Security Gone in 60 Seconds

TWO security specialists have demonstrated how they could exploit a vulnerability in the code of a MacBook wireless device driver to gain control of the computer, causing a small uproar at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas.

At the Black Hat USA conference, two security  researchers demonstrated how easily they could hack into a Mac computer -- in this case Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL)  MacBook -- over a wireless network.

Operating from a nearby laptop, David Maynor, a senior researcher with SecureWorks, and GRADUATE STUDENT Jon Ellch took aim at the MacBook's wireless card and wireless device, compromising the computer in about 60 seconds.

Solve : Microsoft to hackers- try to break Vista?

Answer»

A little afternoon delight for the ummm  hacker folks. Interesting, wonder what the published results will show     f..y..i...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14181541/the defcon ppl(if thats who's also going to be viewing it) and the experts laughing at microsoft I saw that on the news. I am very glad that Microsoft is taking a big step towards computer security.
I just wish that they would fix Windows XP first so I wouldn't have to get Vista to get all the security features!

Mr. GATES: Welcome to the Datum center, Hackers. PLEASE MAKE yourselves comfortable, and try to get in to our system. Now, instead of ONE password, there's 45 passwords to get through!
Hackers: Wide-eyed...
Mr. Gates: Yes that's right. 45!

At my sisters HIGH school, SOMEONE did a project where they had to hack into computers for their final!
They were testing to see if they could get into peoples systems. Though, he had to be careful not to do anything illegal.

same site again.  yeah, as soon as it decided i was a 14 year old software pirate, my computer got hijacked or something and thus far we haven't been able to fix it.  because of this, its speed is like 700mhz when it should be 3.2ghz and i get nonstop popups while online and some while offline, not related to sites i'm on.  those still get blocked.....    sure.... not damaging at all........  The worst we can blame on Microsoft is a QUESTIONABLY secure operating system. What pirates and hackers do is their responsibility. A lot of people get hacked because they leave the doors wide open with file sharing, no protection, etc.lol HACKING very bad but very fun...

Solve : worms on YAHOO?????????

Answer»

attack this link
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/06...targets_yahoo/

A JavaScript worm that takes advantage of an unpatched vulnerability in Yahoo!'s webmail service has been discovered on the net.

The JS-Yamanner worm spreads when a Windows user accesses Yahoo! Mail to open an email sent by the worm. The attack works because of a vulnerability in Yahoo! Mail that enables scripts embedded within HTML emails to be run within a user’s browser INSTEAD of being blocked.

Once executed, the worm forwards itself to an infected users' contacts on Yahoo! Mail. It also harvests these address and sends them to a remote internet server. Only contacts with an email address of EITHER yahoo.com or yahoogroups.com are HIT by this behaviour.

Infected emails commonly have the subject line "New Graphic Site" and are spoofed so as to APPEAR from "[email protected]". Users who open infected emails will be redirected to a webpage at www.av3.net/index.htm.

Symantec Security Response senior manager Kevin Hogan said: "Unlike its predecessors, which would require the user to open an attachment in order to launch and propagate, JS-Yamanner makes use of a security hole in the Yahoo! web mail program in order to spread to other Yahoo! users. Yahoo! is a popular email tool, and although normally closed to such threats, the exploitation of this vulnerability PROVIDES access to a significant number of internet users.

"As there is no patch at present, users are recommended to update virus definitions and firewall signatures and to block any emails sent from [email protected]" ®

I know its faaaar to late but this is useful for things like media player 10 (AKA Sucky McSuck Player) and other beta things.

Incidentally, after rolling back to 9 a few months ago I did a system restore yesterday and its gone back to 10. This time I really can't roll back!I actually already did that, good as new. As for WinMedia10, what's your problem with it? Just curious, because I don't have problems with it.It is BLOATWARE man! it is packed with millions of features that are useless BEYOND belief! you make a wrong click: you log onto the internet!

GO and get winamp. it's the best performing media player i have seen.http://www.winamp.comI like Win Media Player, dont see why you hate it...maybe you need to be careful where you click I really don't have a problem with that, but I disabled the Internet features (THOUGH I still get streaming video... )Windows Media Player is ok for me, but I like Winamp more for some reason. Solve : Death of Windows 98/Me??

Answer»

You've probably already heard the news that Microsoft is ending support for both OSes in July:

http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=http%3a%2f%2fwww.support.microsoft.com%2f%3fscid%3dph%3ben-us%3b1139

Well, I don't blame them for not supporting WinME anymore - that OS gave me more BSODs than I can COUNT! I hated WinME with a PASSION and still do. 98, however, was a fairly stable OS, even if -- ah -- feature-istically challenged?Windows ME never should have been created to BEGIN with. I guess old Bill finally realized that it's the kiss of death to a good computing experience.

Flame Quote

Microsoft is retiring support for these products because they are outdated and can expose customers to security risks.

Ha.  Anyone smell cynical marketing crud?  MS wants to force people off Win98 and onto XP+.  That's all very well and good for us in the affluent West, but what about folks in DEVELOPING countries on low-spec hardware?  I rather think that they will be forced to turn to Linux.  Congratulations, Microsoft!  They say:
We recommend that customers who are still running Windows 98 or Windows Me UPGRADE to a newer, more secure Microsoft operating system...

And what would that be?   [smiley=laugh.gif]
I could upgrade to XP but that's just too expensive.  But maybe they just could've dropped support for ME... Oh well. I never went to M$ for support anyway.

Solve : Gmail Drive?

Answer»

Ok, this isn't really news, but it was to me! I would like to tell you about this free utility i found (completely by chance!) called Gmail Drive.

This is from a site that reviewed it:

"The software makes a new Windows disk drive. When you double-click on My Computer there will be a new icon for the Gmail drive. The first time you access the Gmail drive, you have to LOGIN with your Gmail userid and password. When you copy a file to the Gmail virtual disk drive it is emailed to your Gmail account. Delete a file from the Gmail drive and the matching email message on Gmail is removed. You can copy files to and from the Gmail Drive with the usual drag'n'drop or with copy/paste, just like any other files in Windows Explorer.

You can even right click on the Gmail drive icon, get its properties and see the total, used and free space. You list the files on the Gmail drive with Windows Explorer just like any other drive. "

I never use my gmail account, but now I have 2gb of free password protected storage!

You can download it here:

http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm

I wouldn't put anything important on it though- Google may suddenly decide to block it, its completely experimental! Is there a size limit? Can you access the files anywhere?

I just signed up with my cell phone, and this is great! I believe you can access the files anywhere provided you supply your username/password and download the GmailDrive program.

I think the size limit is the size of your mailbox which is always rising, but at the time of this post is about 2.7 Gigabytes.

2.7 Gigabytes is a decent amount of space especially since it's free!  I installed it but can't  log in.  I enter my Gmail account username and password and It shows the process logging on to Gmail...then returns the message attached below or Timed out.... :-?I think you have an older version.

I'll try to host the one I'm using one second.

EDIT 1: Hope this helped.  :-/

Here's a properties PICTURE...

Tells you free space and everything.

EDIT 1: One second picture too big... (.bmp to .jpg)

EDIT 2: Here it is...

Any luck with finding out if the files have URLs?

Any luck with finding out if the files have URLs?
I doubt it. I'm trying to look into it, but heres some more information; http://www.techcrunch.com/2005/07/31/profile-gmail-drive/

Although apparently it does have it's limitations. The following for instance.

I tested out dragging and dropping files, and it worked well (if understandably a little slow - a 1.5 mb file took about 20 seconds to fully copy over. Individual files cannot be bigger than 10 mb or have file names longer than 40 CHARACTERS (gmail limitations).

EDIT 1: When you upload a file to your Gmail Drive it actually sends an email to your account that you can see through your ordinary browser mailbox.

EDIT 2: Here's an interesting review.

Our IT guys noticed this when accidently one user logged in to a gmail account forget to log out and another one logged in. Gmail supports multiple logins/ INSTANCES and it so happened that files uploded by user2 dropped into that of user1’s account and got mailed to user2.
Serious implications for a confidential services company.

Suprise Suprise... The BETAs aren't working out as well as planned lol

Nope. The same story... Ugh. :-/ I don't have any idea.

Well, it STILL is a cool program, and a good find. Are you sure it doesn't work? My Drive displays an error everytime I connect, and says that it failed to enumerate the drive. I press ok, close the window, and then press the gmail drive icon again. Then it works.Same with me it doesn't work anymore so i just uninsulated it.

Now, why would you want to buy one of the programs they use here: http://pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,124577,00.asp  when you could just use msconfig? What a scam...

FlamePrograms such as HJT and others are MUCH more powerful and free. Unfortunately, the likes of PC WOE mislead a lot of users into unnecessarily parting with their hard earned cash.Again, follow the money, and see who's promoting it.

Some people would rather buy a program than FIGURE out how their system works. Alas, for the majority, that's what Windows is all about.I hate it when businesses take advantage of the less COMPUTER litterate people.

FlameSome people LIKE it that way. They just want to click on everything they see.

Solve : New MSAS Defender?

Answer»

Just to let you know MICROSOFT has released the latest Beta of their Microsoft anti Spyware, this time its also called Defender. Heres URL:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspxI've tested it on another computer. It seems ok, but it's hard to tell if it's on or not, becuase I don't see a taskbar icon. It seems like just as good protection though.

Flamedidint like the beta 1. It TOOK ages to complete, ate my CPU and found absloutely nothing:
Thanks for advice flameHave it on a laptop. The first scan totaled 2+ million files. Seems near impossible on a 40GB disk. I agree with Flame, yes, you can check the task list for MSASCUI, but would it have killed Microsoft to put an icon in the system tray? I'm guessing it works as advertised, but as with any Beta product, it's just a guess.

:-?Yes, the lack of a taskbar icon was/is a drawback. Other than that, is it just me, or does it seem to TAKE longer to download updates? That's another problem I have! I can't see the progress of the update!

FlameSounds like microsoft need to go back to the drawing board with this one!
On my laptop ive got Lavasoft Ad-Aware, beats MSAS anyday for me!I would choose MSAS over Adaware every day of the week. While they're at it, Microsoft might as well take everything back to the drawing board

FlameApparently Microsoft heard you Flame and took your advice. Visual Studio was released in November, MSAS is now in Beta 2, Office 12 is due later this year along with Exchange 12 and MONAD, and Vista is due by Christmas.

Be careful what you ask for.  Flame has more power then we think!!!!!!

So why would you chose MSAS over Ad-Aware??Adaware has no realtime protection, I prefer to stop things before they get in. Quote

Adaware has no realtime protection, I prefer to stop things before they get in.

Same reason I like Microsoft AntiSpy more

Yes, I am quiote powerful lol  It's all logical thinking

FlameI was not overly enamoured by the hash that Microsoft made of an already average product (GAS) with it's first venture into the world of malware (MAS).
This second incarnation (Defender) still leaves MUCH to be desired with it's propensity for false positives and innocent data destruction and the direction in which Microsoft are PUSHING this and other products is a very dark area indeed (Read Trusted Computing Initiative). For those with broken Google buttons:

ZAP!
*falls off his chair*  Mr P actually MAKES a sensible and funny post!!!Where did you hear about this webpage? Because I have not seen this mentioned in any local New's to me. it's a prediction that could happen.
Or this article could just be two scientist arguing about how big in metres the waves will be so he decides to make a post

There's too meny maybe's here, we can't have half of the population reading the website then saying "screw going to work tomorrow, I'm gunna' go buy everything in the shop i can find then just have a massive party and get completely wasted"
And the other half carrying on as normal. That just don't seem right...  :-?

But personally I don't believe we would be told at all, not at least until 2 days before.
let me explain.
Imagine (TRY to not imagine too hard, it's a bit freaky) an official announcement by Bush, "earth will be struck by a comet within the next 5 year's which will kill all LIFE on this planet"
That guy I mentioned before, "screw working", what if he was a bus driver, even more, the company manager? there's lots of things we depend on that could possibly become out of use, due to the factories, shops becoming deserted.
But not everyone might want to party, they might want to spend time with there family and loved ones, and often our family's live far apart. Phone's dead, no busses/planes running, no petrol...

I'm not saying I believe there would be complete anarchy, I THINK the majority of us are more intelligent than that.
But it's another possibility.

A little extreme I know.
And I did twist your word's a little there, you said 25 years, I said 5, which would make a difference in peoples reaction's. probably wouldn’t make a difference for me though, being the lazy guy that I am I'd probably just say "oh what the *censored*, 25 years is a long time, I'll do that thing I wanted to do some other time.." then the reminder comes up on the New's "1 Year..."

Still, i don't think we would be informed about it.
i agree it would be really silly telling the world that we are all going to die soon.

I dont know.

Suppose we foind out in 24 years.

R0SS  i agree...  i think its purist function of the internet is communication,  and information sharing and gathering, but it's been turned into a conglomo billboard...  i also read today that AOL & Yahoo are going to start charging companies 1/4 cent to 1 cent PER email they send as a form of e-postage and special treatment will be given to those emails... they say it is to combat spammers but spam is actually down 75% (can you tell?) since 2003...  but that is the reason they say they are doing this and fail to mention the (literally) hundreds of millions of dollars they will make from it...
bellsouth and AT&T (a close yahoo.com ally) are pushing senators to deregulate some FCC rules (not sure which ones) to allow them to charge services involving large bandwidth like movies or music per/download... there is a "Net Nuetrality" movement attempting to keep bandwidth neutral and prevent some data from being given preferential treatment, but AT&T is HUGE and i'm sure they've got plenty of lobbyists prepared to give the senate and house plenty of charts and graphs about how much money they are losing due to this free exchange of electronic data packets...

Solve : Nyxem-E Virus?

SO what you all think of this new virus?

I heard about it on the news tonight..It cannot infect my computer.Kama Sutra e-mail virus primed to strike today
By Martin Hickman, Consumer Affairs Correspondent
Published: 03 February 2006
Important information stored on home computers could be wiped clean by an e-mail virus called Kama Sutra that is timed to strike today.

Computer engineers say the virus has been infecting hundreds of thousands of machines across the world since being identified on 16 January. It is being circulated as a pornographic attachment to e-mails and spreads by e-mailing itself to other addresses from an infected computer. On the third day of every month it deletes files.

The virus targets computers using Microsoft Windows but, unlike many other recent viruses, deletes many popular types of file, including spreadsheets and presentations.

A WEBSITE associated with the virus estimated it has now reached more than 300,000 victims. Its impact is likely to be greatest on home computers because most businesses have current ANTI-virus protection.

The virus got its name because some of its variations refer to the Kama Sutra guide to *censored* positions but is also known as "Nyxem-E, Grew.A", "MyWife" or "BlackWorm".It appears as an e-mail with subject lines such as "Hot Movie" or "Miss Lebanon 2006".

Affected files include Oracle, Word, Adobe Acrobat, Photshop, Excel and PowerPoint. Because so many of the applications are used in offices, experts believe the virus may be AIMED at businesses.

Ken Dunham, from the US internet security firm VeriSign, said: "This attack is under way and will be activated unless people get virus removal tools.

"If you have opened an e-mail and your computer froze up, you should be very concerned."

From what I have read about this pest .......if your Anti virus is up to date you should be ok ....however .........use extreme care when opening Emails .......don't open anything with an attachment unless you are certain of its source ..........

Here's a free removal tool for this pest .......  http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/nyxem_e.shtml

The official "Please read this first" has been updated. Below is a listing of some of the changes I hope will not only improve users posts but also improve membership and the overall ease of the forum.

 • No more long URL's posted, CREATED hyperlinks for all related links.
 • Added notice about membership being required for users who may not know.
 • Changed the long number format of GX1_Man's original post to a bullet format to keep it compact and to help not intimidate the users with too much text to read.
 • Created a link to the Spyware/Virus Q&A forum post instead of just mentioning the suggestion.
 • Moved the request for users to post their system specification to the top of the list since it seems to be the biggest issue I hear of.
If you're a new member and found something hard or confusing in getting setup with the forum please post your comments and I'll see if I can add it to the read me so other users may not be confused.

If you're a FREQUENT forum user and have additional suggestions or things you see happening that would be beneficial to add to this post feel free to post your suggestions here.

Solve : Firefox DoS?

Quote

An exploit for the new Firefox 1.5 BROWSER was released today that causes a denial of service condition using a simple web PAGE as a trigger.

The HEART of the problem lies with the history.dat file that Firefox CREATES, according to a posting on Packet Storm. The exploit creates a very large entry which Firefox then saves into the history.dat file. This causes the browser to crash the next time it is opened, and each time after that until the history.dat file is deleted from the system.

This message that he sent APPEARS to be legit, but shows evidence of being FRAUD! The E-Mail says that your account will be DELETED unless you forward this message to fifteen others... So what's the security issue? Well, (1) its probably fake, and (2) the image was blocked by the MSN security scanner for virus-like reasons... Below is the complete message you may see...
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Hotmail User,

We understand that you have previously received many messages that stated the closing of accounts not being used within our servers. This message, however, is your final warning. Within this message is encoded a small program that will located and debug your account when sent to fifteen other hotmail users. If you do not send this message to fifteen Hotmail users within 24 hours of receiving this message, your account will be PERMANETLY SHUT-DOWN. When and if you send this, we hereby grant that you will no longer receive such messages at this one.

We realize that this process is becoming an annoyance, however, this is the final message you will receive from the Hotmail Announcement Staff. Thank you for your time and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Calvin W. Kreantz
MSN Accounts Coordinator

Also, this message comes out in a .gif picture file... I just took the liberty of typing it to warn everyone    I have just E-Mailed Microsoft to find out if this is a REAL message, and will be awaiting a reply for the next 24 hours at least. If you see this E-Mail (or one like it) around now, I would suggest waiting until I receive a reply from Microsoft... Because this message contains a virus... You don't want to send it to a friend or friends... I will keep you updated...
