Prophet Mohammed practised what he preached. Every day he used to give away what ever he earned the whole day. The alarm woke up and anxiously, I got out of the bed to get ready to face the new day. The uniform I wore made me feel a little more anxious. The excitement, thrill and the anxiety grew stronger as I could see the school building just a few metres ahead.

I cycled more eagerly and as entered the gate, I stopped to ask the watchman about the cycle stand. He was a short, twinkling eyed and a smiling man. He directed me towards the cycle stand. His friendly manner lowered my anxiety and I felt calmer. We exchanged a few shy greetings and with our admission slips and headed for the principal’s room together.

The principal too was very warm and cordial. We were given a few general instructions about the school and were then asked to head for the school auditorium for the assembly. In the auditorium, the atmosphere was charged with excited and energetic students greeting each other. I was a bit shy but the students were very warm and friendly. Seeing me standing a little away on my own, a few of them came to me and introduced themselves. I also told them about myself. They were in the same class as mine. So we went together to stand in line.

As the assembly began, I at once felt at home. After assembly, the new students had an hour of orientation where we were introduced to the teachers and other important features of the school. All the teachers seemed friendly and nice.

After that we went to our respective classes. My class too was very friendly and cordial. Our class teacher also was a very cordial and a warm person. We did not have much to do that day. So we just talked and whispered to each other. I made a few friends the very first day and that made me feel very happy.

In modem times the man made technological advancement has made it possible to exploit natural resources to the maximum limit. This unbridled exploitation has gravely endangered the natural equilibrium of the environment. In fact life on earth is endangered to such an extent that the future of our planet, the only habitable planet in the universe, is endangered. The existence of life on earth in future is questionable.

Environmental degradation means disturbing the natural equilibrium of nature including atmosphere hydrosphere and lithosphere. Besides the natural environment; a man made environment exists which deals with technology, work environment, aesthetics, ‘transportation, housing, utilities, entics etc.

This man made environment has adversly affected the natural environment to a very great extent. Therefore there is a drastic and urgent need to save our natural environment. What are the duties to be upheld by an ideal citizen? First and foremost, an ideal citizen is the one who loves his country and who is proud of his country. So he should promote secularism and bring people of different communities together in the true spirit of brotherhood.

The word ‘brotherhood’ points out that in society all of us should get equal opportunities. So an ideal citizen would strive to ensure that there is social justice and people get equal benefit without a huge gap between the rich and the poor. An ideal citizen should exhibit the virtue of philanthropy and social consciousness.

In addition to these lofty ideals, an ideal citizen should also keep in mind practical values like saving the environment, preserving natural resources, keeping the surroundings clean and protecting public amenities

The Three Wise men knew how to give. They gave unique gifts with special emphasis. Jim and Della have given special gifts to one another. They made the ultimate sacrifice. They gave their most prized possession.

Truly, no other couple has been compared to The Three Wise Men and their giving of themselves. The author of “The Gift of the Magi” beautifully writes how Jim and Della pay the price by giving up valuable gifts to show their love for one another.

No greater love is expressed than the love Jim and Della have for each other. Their gifts display their unselfish attitudes. Jim and Della care deeply and each one’s gifts expressing a genuine desire to please the other.

No doubt, Jim and Della are the Magi: The narrator explains that the wise men, or Magi, , brought gifts to the baby Jesus and so invented the giving of Christmas gifts. Because these men were wise, they no doubt gave wise gifts. Della and Jim, the narrator asserts, have unwisely sacrificed their most precious possessions. Yet, because they gave from the heart, they are wise: “They are the Magi.”

O’ Henry’s The Gift if The Magi is one of his most famous short stories. It is actually a story of sacrificial love of a young married couple namely Jim and Della. They are the two central characters. They love each other very much like the three Biblical wise men of the East. The Magi, both Jim and Della sacrifices their most valuable wealth for one another. So, the adroit short story writer William Sydney Porter compares them to the Magi.

Let us now see how he has justified the title– The Gift of the Magi Actually the Magi were the three Biblical wise men from the East who came to the infant Jesus Christ bearing precious gift for him. Following a star in the sky, they travelled for years to see child Christ with valuable gift for him. In this sense they are really wise. In this story, The Gift of The Magi, Jim and Della are also similarly wise in the sense that they buy valuable gift for each other as they are most favorite to each other in exchange of losing their most valuable asset. So they are not wise in the eye of society, but in the eye of ideal love. Thus, the story keeps up the title well.

Cleverly, the story is set at Christmas time when both Jim and Della desire to present each other a gift valuable and suitable, honorable and worthy. Each of them has one most valuable thing. Della has her long, luxuriant and beautiful hair it is something that she values most and Jim also admires most. On the other hand Jim has a beautiful gold watch that once belonged to his father and grandfather.

Anyway, Della sells her hair to buy a perfect chain for his watch because it has no chain. Hence, she thinks that Jim will no longer have to hide the watch in his pocket. On the other hand, Jim sells his watch to buy the beautiful and lovely hair comb that Della once admired and earnestly wished to buy to adorn her hair. Thus, each of them sacrifices their most valuable possession for each other, though foolishly.

In the opinion of O Henry, the short story writer, they are the modern Magi. Every where they are the wisest of all who give and receive gifts. And if we compare and look deep into the implication of the story, we see that the Magi were rich. They were the three kings of the East. They gave infant Jesus gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Though Jim and Della are poor they make their supreme sacrifices to buy each other a suitable gift on the Christmas day. Thus O’ Henry explains and relates to the significance of the Biblical title The Gift of the Magi in addition at the end of the story he shows the argument that though Jim and Della may have acted foolishly in the eye of society, their gift is selfless and their love is matchless in both the cases they sacrifice their supreme sacrifices.

Thus the title of the story The Gift of the Magi reinforces the writer’s larger theme about gift giving. That is, the gift itself is not so important as the love & sacrifice behind the gift. It is true that the Magi brought gift to honor infant Jesus Christ, but it is equally true that Jim and Della honor their selfless love for each other.

Situational irony occurs when there's an unexpected outcome in a story. An example is when Jim comes home from work and sees Della's short hair. The fact that he purchased hair combs for Della demonstrates that he didn't expect her to sell her hair.
