A copper coin is kept immersed in a solution of silver nitrate for some time. What will happen to the coin and the colour of solution?

Answer»

Solution :Copper is placed above the silver in the REACTIVITY series which indicates that copper is more REACTIVE than silver. When a copper coin on strip is kept immersed in a solution of silver nitrate `(AgNO_3)` silver from its solution will deposit on copper coin.
`2AgNO_3(AQ)_(Colourl ess)+Cu(s)to2Ag(s)+Cu(NO_3)2_(Blue)(aq)`
Copper slowly displaces silver from the `AgNO_3` solution and the colour of solution changes from colourless to blue due to FORMATION of copper nitrate `[Cu(NO_3)_2]`. The copper COIL will disappear and silver will precipitate out.
