Man is a slave of circumstances. His relationships with other people depend upon whether he is under the influence of good or bad circumstances. Calamities put him under a severe strain which affects his relationships.
Though Gafur, for example, loved his motherless daughter, Amina, very dearly, we find him cursing and slapping her for no fault of hers. Later he repented for his deed. He felt sorry for Amina.
In a fit of anger, he kills Mahesh, the bull, which he loves as his own son. On the one hand, he does not sell him to the butcher and on the other hand, he kills him.
At the time of leaving the village, he does not think it necessary to meet any villager. He has nobody to call his own in the village.

आदमी परिस्थितियों का दास होता है। दूसरे लोगों से उसके संबंध इस बात पर निर्भर करते हैं कि वह अच्छी परिस्थितियों के प्रभाव में है या बुरी परिस्थितियों के। आपदाएँ उसे गहरे तनाव में ला खड़ा करती हैं जिससे उसके संबंध भी प्रभावित होते हैं।
उदाहरण के लिए यद्यपि गफूर, अपनी बिन माँ की बेटी, अमीना को बहुत प्यार करता है, हम उसे बिना किसी कसूर के उसको (अमीना को) कोसते और थप्पड़ मारते हुए पाते हैं। बाद में वह अपने किये पर पश्चाताप करता है। वह अमीना के लिए दु:खी होता है।
क्रोध के आवेग में वह उस बैल, महेश को भी मार डालता है जिसे वह बेटे की भाँति प्यार करता है। एक ओर तो वह उसे कसाई को नहीं बेचता है और दूसरी ओर स्वयं ही उसे मार देता है।
गाँव छोड़कर जाते समय वह किसी गाँव वाले से मिलकर जाना आवश्यक नहीं समझता। गाँव में ऐसा कोई नहीं है जिसे वह अपना कह सके।
