Gafur was a poor weaver who lived in Kashipur. He had only four bighas of land. His house was at the end of the field, beside the road. The mud walls of his house were in ruins, the courtyard touched the public highway and the inner privacy was thrown on the mercy of the passers-by. He had to patch the roof with palm leaves and manage the rainy weather. He had a daughter and a bull. He didn’t have enough money to have food for himself and his daughter. It was impossible to feed the bull. During the drought, he didn’t have paddy for his bull. Once he decided to sell his bull but later he changed his mind. There was nothing to eat and drink in his house. Gafur borrowed money from Bansi on the security of his household goods.

गफूर एक गरीब जुलाहा था, जो कि काशीपुर में रहता था। उसके पास केवल चार बीघा भूमि थी। उसका घर सड़क के किनारे खेत के अंत में था। उसके घर की कच्ची दीवारें खण्डहर हो गई थी, आंगन सड़क तक पहुँच गया था तथा आंतरिक निजता राहगीरों की दया पर निर्भर थी। उसे छत को ताड़ के पत्तों से ढक कर बरसात से बचाव करना पड़ता था। उसके एक पुत्री व एक बैल था। उसके पास इतना पैसा भी नहीं था कि वह अपना और अपनी पुत्री का पेट भर सके। बैल का पेट भरना सम्भव नहीं था। सूखे के दौरान उसके पास अपने बैल के लिए भूसा भी नहीं था। एक बार उसने अपने बैल को बेचने का निश्चय किया फिर उसका मन बदल गया। उसके घर में खाने व पीने को कुछ भी नहीं था। गफूर बंशी से अपने घर के सामान गिरवी रखकर उधार लेता था।
