There are many incidents in the story that show that Mahesh was the cause of worry for Gafur. It is famine and Gafur has no paddy for Mahesh so he becomes very sad for Mahesh. He cannot let him loose otherwise he might start poking his nose into somebody’s paddy or eating somebody’s straw. Gafur has no rice at his home to give boiled rice-water to Mahesh to drink. He is sad that the landlord gave him paddy to last only two months. When Mahesh breaks loose from his tether and enters the grounds of the landlord, eats up flowers, upsets the corn drying in the sun and hurts the landlord’s youngest daughter, he is beaten badly by the landlord. When Gafur sees that Mahesh is sucking up the water flowing on the earth due to the tumbling of his daughter’s pot, he becomes furious and kills him.

कहानी में कई सारी घटनाएं हैं जो बताती है कि महेश गफूर के लिए परेशानी का कारण था। अकाल है और गफूर के पास महेश के लिए कोई भूसा नहीं है इसलिए वह महेश के लिए बहुत ही दु:खी होता है। वह उसे खुला भी नहीं छोड़ सकता है अन्यथा वह दूसरों के भूसे में अपना मुँह मारेगा या दूसरों का भूसा खायेगा। महेश को पीने के लिये मांड देने के लिए गफूर के घर में चावल भी नहीं है। उसे दु:ख है कि जमींदार ने उसे केवल दो महीने चलने जितना ही भूसा दिया था। जब महेश अपनी रस्सी तुड़ा लेता है और जमींदार के मैदान में घुस जाता है, फूल खा लेता है, धूप में सुखाई फसल को बिखेर देता है तथा जमींदार की सबसे छोटी लड़की को घायल कर देता है तो गफूर को जमींदार के द्वारा बुरी तरह से पीटा जाता है। जब गफूर यह देखता है कि महेश जमीन पर बहते हुए उस पानी को पी रहा है जो कि उसकी पुत्री के मटके लुढ़कने से बहा है तो वह क्रोधित होकर उसे मार देता है।
