Gafur was a poor weaver. He lived in a village with his daughter and a bull Mahesh. There was a drought in the village. So he had nothing to eat and drink. He did not get any work anywhere so he had no money at all. He was in distress. He was shaken out of his listlessness by the shriek of his daughter. He could not bear the scene. In a fit of rage, he hit his bull. The bull died on the spot. After killing the bull, he came to know that the landlord had sent for Tarkaratna to seek his advice about how Gafur would pay for the penance which the killing of a sacred animal demanded. He knew that those people would either beat him or extort money in the name of penance. So he left the village to look for work in the jute mill at Fuller.

गफूर एक गरीब जुलाहा था। वह अपनी पुत्री तथा एक बैल, महेश के साथ रहता था। गाँव में सूखा पड़ा था। इसलिए उसके पास खाने पीने के लिए कुछ भी नहीं था। उसे कहीं पर भी कोई काम नहीं मिला था इसलिए उसके पास पैसा भी नहीं था। वह अत्यधिक दु:खी था। वह अपनी पुत्री की चीख से अपनी तन्द्रा से जागा। वह उस दृश्य को सह नहीं सका। आक्रोश में आकर उसने बैल को मारा। बैल उसी समय मर गया। बैल को मारने के बाद उसे पता चला कि जमींदार ने तारकरत्न को यह पूछने के लिए बुलाया कि बैल जैसे पवित्र जानवर को मारने के बाद गफूर को पश्चाताप करने के लिए क्या चुकाना पड़ेगा। वह जान गया कि वे लोग पश्चाताप के नाम पर या तो उसे पीटेंगे या उससे रूपये ऐंठेगें। इसलिए उसने फूलबेड़े में स्थित जूट मिल में काम करने के लिए गाँव छोड़ दिया।
