1.

Define Azeotropes? What are maximum and minimum boiling azeotropes ? Explain with example.

Answer»

Azeotropes are constant boiling mixture which has same composition in liquid phase as well as in vapour phase.

The non ideal solutions which exhibit negative deviation from ideal solution at a particular composition are called as maximum boiling azeotropes.

e.g 68% aqueous solution of HNO3 or any other suitable example.

The non ideal solutions which exhibit positive deviation from ideal solution at a particular composition are called as minimum boiling azeotropes.

e.g 95% aqueous ethanol by volume or any other suitable example.
