Differentiate between overlapping and cross cutting difference |
|
Answer» Over lapping social difference If social differences overlap each other it may lead to social division and if one social difference is given preference then people would begin to think that they belong to different community. It always leads to social division and disintegration of the country. Example:- USA: The blacks are discriminated by the whites due to their poverty (racial discrimination). Cross cutting social difference If social difference cross-cut each other we would find it difficult to find which group is against the other. These groups may have similar views on some issues and different on other issues. It encourages diversity and accommodates unity. Example:- NETHERLAND: The main religion here is Christianity. They have division as Catholics and Protestants. Here class and religion cross-cut each other. Neither of them are rich or poor and do not have conflict between them. \tOvelappingCross-cuttingWhen some social difference causes and overlaps with other difference. If social differences cross-cut one another, then one social difference is compromised with the otheroverlapping differences is the mixture of one or more differences caused by one main difference\xa0It means that a group that share a common interest on the issue are likely to be on different sides on a different issue.Example- racial difference between dark complexion and fairer complexion also refered as the afro-americans\xa0in the US becomes a social division because the darker complexion tend to stay unemployed due to their colour and tend to be poor & homeless, and often face injustice & discrimination.Example -Northern Ireland & Netherlands both are predominantly Christians but divided between Catholics & Protestants. In Northern Ireland the Protestants have stayed richer than the Catholics here class & religion overlap each other, Catholics have been poor & have suffered discrimination\t\xa0 |
