Answer» The reaction proceeds by the addition of Oxygen (or) removal of hydrogen is called oxidation (or) Loss of electrons (or) the reaction proceeds with increase in the oxidation state (charge) of the central atom is called oxidation. Generally Oxidation reactions are exothermic reactions.Ex: C + O₂ → CO₂(i) In the above while burning Carbon, it under goes oxidation (addition of oxygen) producing carbon dioxide. The energy released during this reaction is used for our needs (cooking food, boiling water).(ii) In the formation of water, Hydrogen from Zero \' 0 \' oxidation state increased to +1. So, hydrogen is oxidised in the formation water. Reactions in which a substance gains oxygen and loses hydrogen is called Oxidation reaction. The addition of oxygen to a substance and removal of hydrogen from a substance is called oxidation. The process in which hydrogen are released or oxygen are absorbed are known as oxidation reaction |
